People have life time relationships ... e.g. Oprah and stedman etc. I feel marriage comes with a set of societal expectations and definitions of what a husband or wife should be and what their roles are etc etc. If the relationship prior to marriage didn't have that dynamic, it will be a problem. To summarise, those that want to be together and stay commited to each other would do it regardless of marriage. The commitment level is no different to me for either situation.

I think it is definitely different for those who view marriage from a religious perspective (as opposed to those who view it primarily from a governmental perspective). From a religious perspective, a marriage deepens the relationship as we officially unify/commit before God, become more spiritually intertwined and build a family etc.

I love that everybody had their own sort of view when it came to the whole marriage thing. I think too many people believe that marriage is the norm but this just proves that everyone has their different views on the topic and it's okay to have a different view. I think it’s the nuance of it all. Look at the intent, the tone, the body language, etc. For example “calm down” or “relax” can mean, “you are such a drama queen” or “don’t worry-you’ll get through this” depending on the factors above.

When society doesn't want you to date different race or religion, or date same when it comes to gender, and your soulmate is of that group, then people should be put on mute and you do you. It's too bad that Jeannie and then husbands goals to create an unbreakable marriage, fell through. I hate when people always say marriage is something that you can't walk away from. But in all reality you can walk away their husbands who just up and leave their wives for no reason. There are wives who just leave their kids with her husband and just walk away and don't return four years later. Their wives who have had acid poured on them and burn victims and burn survivors who have been married and when their husbands see them after their accident then they leave them. Marriage is not something special that means that somebody else will never leave you. Actions prove that you will stay with somebody or actions can prove that you will not be there for that person. People need to stop hyping up marriage as though accidents don't happen.

This coming September makes 16 yrs I have been with my partner. I’ve told him that marriage is not for me per say. Nothing against those who choose to marry.... it’s just not for me. I have 4 kids with him and we are as strong today as we were 1 yr ago. They have his last name and marriage does not make or break my definition of a solid relationship and family. I disagree with Loni when she says you have to be married to decide to have kids. Maybe I may look at this differently being Canadian, but being married has nothing to do with insurance, financial security or having a solid family unit.

I am and have been extremely happy with this person. I dated what people thought was good for me and I became extremely depresse.

I think it’s the nuance of it all. Look at the intent, the tone, the body language, etc. For example “calm down” or “relax” can mean, “you are such a drama queen” or “don’t worry-you’ll get through this” depending on the factors above.

I feel so sad when people say that marriage is a just about a contract.
It is so much more than that.
Let's be real. When you date and your in a long-term relationship, you could say that you make a verbal contract that your committed to each other.
Loni then talks about people calling marriage a "ball and chain".
This is heartbreaking that people have these perceptions.
This all explains, some, of the reasons, why there are so many divorces. People are entering marriage blindly, in my opinion.

Adrienne, I am with you. Marriage is a commitment that we make to each other and a union before God. I am not getting married so someone can financially support me (Loni), nor am I getting married so I can feel stuck to someone and forced to work it out (Jeannie).

She’s said before that marriage is about commitment etc. But her hearing jeezy say everything about letting everything be hard to walk away etc, I think made her know that.. no matter what happens, there’s not going to be no walking away from our partnership and our marriage. So I think that’s what made her more open to remarrying. I guess she’s assured that there’s no walking away. That’s all..

When society doesn't want you to date different race or religion, or date same when it comes to gender, and your soulmate is of that group, then people should be put on mute and you do you. But there are also times when people see for us more then we see for ourselves. Sometimes we sell ourselves short and others notice before we do, so I say listen to what people have to say, consider it if it makes sense, and leave if it doesn't. There are also mistakes that you just have to make in order to learn, and that's ok.

It's too bad that Jeannie and then husbands goals to create an unbreakable marriage, fell through. He seemed to talk a lot about making it so hard to tear apart and then left the marriage within a year or two I believe. Jeannie once wished he wouldn't be too "regular degular" with a goodnight kiss on an early first date and in NO time he became just that when he left the marriage so soon IMO! She reluctantly took a chance on a 2nd marriage, a baby and a brand new life and ended up with someone IMO- "regular degular." It's a real shame when someone makes u excited about life and encourages u to try living, embracing it in a way you were unsure of. You do, and in short order u realize u probably should have left well enough alone and stayed where you were. I'm sorry I always hoped Jay wouldn't hurt Jeannie, but always felt ( and hoped it wouldn't) he would. Don't know any of the facts, just disappointed in him as a man vehemently pushing for that unbreakable bond in marriage according to Jeannie. Best to her and her daughter.

I hate when people always say marriage is something that you can't walk away from. But in all reality you can walk away their husbands who just up and leave their wives for no reason. There are wives who just leave their kids with her husband and just walk away and don't return four years later. Their wives who have had acid poured on them and burn victims and burn survivors who have been married and when their husbands see them after their accident then they leave them. Marriage is not something special that means that somebody else will never leave you. Actions prove that you will stay with somebody or actions can prove that you will not be there for that person. People need to stop hyping up marriage as though accidents don't happen.

This coming September makes 16 yrs I have been with my partner. I’ve told him that marriage is not for me per say. Nothing against those who choose to marry.... it’s just not for me. I have 4 kids with him and we are as strong today as we were 1 yr ago. They have his last name and marriage does not make or break my definition of a solid relationship and family. I disagree with Loni when she says you have to be married to decide to have kids. Maybe I may look at this differently being Canadian, but being married has nothing to do with insurance, financial security or having a solid family unit.
