This is a DIY how-to on replacing the belt on a 2013-2018 5th gen. Nissan Altima 2.5L 4 cylinder.
Torque Specs included.

& just so you’re aware….this is a “serpentine” belt, not a timing belt. These cars do not have timing belts, they are timing chain driven.

Check your power steering pump. It's right next to the alternator, under where the reservoir is. When I turn the wheel on mine, the pump makes a weird noise. I believe its an electrically driven pump, but I know almost nothing about the system. Good luck!

Your videos are awesome brother!! I did my CVT fluid flush a few years ago courtesy of your video. Fast forward to today, started the car up a few minutes ago and I heard a bad sound from under the hood, noticed the belt was cracked and starting to shred itself. RUclips to the rescue and the 2nd or 3rd hit was your video! I haven’t started yet but I’m confident this is a job I can knock out right away thanks to your videos. So I’m not new to car repair but wanted some highlights of repairing our Altima in its broke down location. I usually video my repairs and after watching yours, I don’t think I need to. I am an OLD Mechanic (In retrospect of the post below) with a 2013 2.5 SL.
"GREAT DETAILED video!" - Belt number cross over for Gates, was one of the things I was having an issue with - As mine are worn off and online forums say they keep getting ones that are too short going after market.
If in "The off chance those numbers are wrong" - Like being for a manual power steering pump , not Electric - I'll be back!
You show 5 pulleys though... So all should be good.

I appreciate the comment! And if you have a 4-door sedan 5th gen Altima, then you have electric steering, they weren’t optioned with manual.
The reason they list manual options when you search the 2013 model year specifically…..is because of the Altima coupe. Coupes were still produced in 2013…however they are technically 4th generation’s (last year of the coupe) and they have manual steering.
How they should list options for 2013’s is coupe or sedan, it would take the confusion away. But if you have a 4-door sedan 5th Gen., then you have electric 👍

Definitely need a low profile breaker bar and a very shallow socket. My half inch breaker and shallow 17mm wasn't even close to fitting. Got a 3/8 ratchet to fit, but couldn't get enough leverage to move the tensioner. I was just dragging myself across the ground because I don't weigh enough lol. My much larger neighbor saw me struggling and was able to move the tensioner and we got it done!

Ended up losing engine power, AC, power steering at once. Once I parked I realized my belt was not turning and was hanging loose. Hoping I just need to replace the belt itself but coolant was boiling over and spraying out as well.
Its because the water pump wasnt pumping. Its also belt driven. As long as you didn’t drive it too long in that condition it should be fine. Just gonna need to top off/adjust coolant level

BeeCee Built, thank you so much for your excellent tutorials on how to service Nissan Altimas. Thanks to you I was able to successfully change my serpentine belt today, and my car is running like a top! One question, where did you buy your breaker bar? I had a heck of a time releasing the tension on the tensioner since my breaker bar wouldn’t fit into that space with a socket on. I was able to use my handheld 3/8 wrench with a burst of energy to break it loose, but it would’ve been so much easier with a breaker bar like yours. Anyways, you’re a top notch RUclipsr, thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

My only problem is it’s cold now and 221k miles and it started screaming when I go to move it. The problem I have is if I take it to the dealer they will also try and say it’s the tensioner that need’s to be replaced and I cannot argue because I simply do not know. Both the belt and the tension is $500 (ish) the dude said on the phone. It is LOUD until I get going.
I hear ya man! If you got the right tools its really not hard! Just get that belt off, spin all those pulleys like I did in the video and see if you got any other noises, and then that will steer you in the right direction if you possibly need to replace a pulley or just the belt 👍

If you’re having trouble just don’t lock in the tensioner with an allen-key and just pull it back more while routing the belt over the tensioner.
@@TheOriginalBeeCee I guess the ribs weren't all on. Once they were it fit smoothly but I pulling the tensioner did help a bit

I am finally replacing the belt on my car, i am going with GoodYear belt. I think my belt has been on my car since factory and its been making squealing sounds like the little piggie that she is. i knew that the process was going to be easy but didnt know about the just sticking a hex into the tensioner. Since my car is 10 years old, i have to do a lot of maintenance, like replace the rad, new Thermostat, new hoses and etc etc. i know the exhaust pipe right near the flex pipe has holes in it so , i am most likely going to go aftermarket exhaust on that one. i know for a fact that my CVT is on borrowed time atm. Was considering saving all of my money and just do an engine swap, wouldnt be bad at all honestly.
What up man. Unless you having issues, like with the rad, thermostat, etc. if they aren’t failing, I would leave them alone. If it ain’t broke, dont fix it. Radiator for example really isn’t a “maintenance” item, at least in my opinion anyway. If these engines are maintained, they really can go forever. The engine isn’t what you would need to worry about, it would be the CVT of course, like you mentioned. But even a Nissan CVT can get some longevity with the right maintenance.

@TheOriginalBeeCee do you recommend changing the tensioner at the same time as the belt? I'm just under 100K and was going to do both, but I can't find a video specific to the tensioner. Might just swap to a Gates belt and call it a day.
I personally believe in if it aint broke, don’t fix it most of the time. So if your tensioner is tight and not making noise, i would just leave it alone!

Hard to say, but its pretty tight. Just try and see if you can fit your ratchet in there…if it isn’t a big bulky round style one it might just fit. Won’t know until you try.

I have same car as yours, same belt I bought but the belt can't fit inside, same thing I do,I put key on that hole to hold the tension but belt still doesn't work
Instead of locking the tensioner with key, pull it back farther manually with breaker bar, and hold it and it will give you more play room/leverage.
What type of belt this this your replacing? I have a 2013 Nissan Altima it has 179,000 should I get this changed even it I don’t hear anything noise?
This is a serpentine belt. The main and only belt. If you’re at 179k I’d imagine its probably been done once or twice. Should be done every 60k or so. If it looks dried, can’t see anything markings/writing on it and/or it has cracking, then its time to be replaced!

I would grab the Gates belt part I provided in the video, or you could cross reference that Gates belt part number. @11:19
Hey BeeCee, great video! At 8:10 you can see the starting position of the Allen wrench hole. Could something be wrong with my tensioner? On my car the hole where you put the Allen wrench is higher than where your starting point is.
My dad is a strong guy and we have enough leverage, but when we relieve tension it seems to go to where your starting point is! (We stick the Allen wrench when it’s lined up like in 8:10)

Whats up man. Sounds like you dont have tension, thats the only way it would fall off. Hate to ask, but if you held the tensioner with an allen key, did you remember to remove it?
@@TheOriginalBeeCeeyes it’s been removed. Well it doesn’t actually fall all the way off, it just slides off the water pump a little and isn’t sitting right. The belt tends to hang off a bit about 1/4 of it. I bought this car used and I’ve had to replace the belt before cause it had a tear in it. I assume it was from hanging off of the water pump. Replaced the belt. Put a new alternator and it started to hang off a bit again after a few days. Do you think it could be my tension Pulley? Thanks for the reply. If you have IG I can send you a pic of what it looks like. I love this car it’s in good condition just has a lot of miles on it
Yeaaa man definitely sounds like the tensioner then. Thats really all it could be if everything is on point and the belt is the correct size!

Do you mind what belt did you use? The one with electric steering or without electric steering?
I answered this in our comment thread on my other video, but I figured I’d paste my response here as well:
if you have a sedan then it should have electric steering. In 2013 Nissan also offered the coupe, which is technically a 4th gen. with power steering pump. So thats why when searching for a belt for a 2013 it reflects electric or not. But really they should be just asking coupe or sedan. But since you have a sedan, you have electric.

@@PhillipHall01 the alternator was indeed the sound. the alternator mechanical failed, but not electrically. So it mechanically failed as in the bearing went bad creating this sound, however it was still electrically fine, as it still was charging at 14v+. So, an alternator can still function and charge, however it can sound like complete crap as this one did.

I actually have a Harbor Freight and Duralast 18 inch breaker bar, I believe I used the Duralast which is a little less husky & a bit thinner.

man my nissan altima right now the belt started squeaking so loud and the car battery died ,but before the car dies it wont rise rpm or drive ,no reverse nothing ,ok my wife give me a jump and the car started nornal and it drive to my home ,now the belt is loose ,not broken ,loose and dont know why car didnt accelerates or if ita the belt ,the tension pulley or the alternator ? .
Sounds like you got a lot going on. You need to get in there and do some diagnosing. Check the battery for voltage. With car cold & off, a good battery should be 12.5v or better. When the car is first started up & running, it should be reading around 14v’s. I would start there and get voltage readings to steer you in right direction & for confirmation. Sounds like either the alternator is bad, and/or the belt is bad and not charging the alternator. Belt should never be loose. I would check voltages not running & running, then replace belt and recheck voltages to see where you’re at.

Thats a very subjective question. Im sure it can vary from $100 all the way to $500+ at certain dealers.

Hello! I also have a 2014 Altima. The first time i had my belt replaced was back in 2021. Then October 3rd, 2022 the belt snapped again. I had the belt replaced the same day and no noises. A month later November 5th, 2022 it started squeaking again just like this video. At first I thought it could be the idler pulley that needed to be replaced since I never had it done, but after seeing this video, i think it may be the alternator pulley. Where can I find the alternator pulley ?
If you had just a sound, it could be potentially be the alternator. But the fact that the belt has snapped, would lead me to believe it would potentially be the tensioner. Something is causing too much tension, causing it to snap.
What needs to be done is basically what I outlined in the video….the belt needs to be removed, and each pulley should be spun manually by hand to see if you’re getting any sound out of it, and/or if its hard to spin. It needs a good visual inspection to determine the problem or at the very least narrow it down, you just don’t wanna throw parts at it hoping they’ll fix the issue.
And if for some reason if it happened to be the alternator, you would replace the whole alternator not just the pulley.

Yes, this is the serpentine belt. Thats what broke on your car as these cars are timing chain driven and do not have timing belts. So replace the belt and you’ll be on your way!
