Strengthen them, Oh Lord, and keep them from the strangers' ways. May God bless you and grant you long lives. May the Lord fulfill our Sabbath prayer for you. May God make you good mothers and wives. at 2:49. I did not think about this much when I was a kid but between Tzital and Motal I think Motal was the smartest one of the two. he knew the rule of the game (if you get my drift) he knew he had to prove to Tevia that he can financially support his daughter which is why he wanted to wait until he got his new sewing machine to ask Tevia for his daughter's hand. Tzital also had a point. I can see both sides of the argument. Tzital was afraid that if her father agreed on a husband for her before Motal asked her father for her hand it would be too late.

My maternal grandfather was a poor tailor. Sadly, he cheated on my grandmother, who was terminal with leukaemia. My mother and my aunt shunned him from the family as a result. Him and the rest of my grandparents suffered greatly through the Holocaust in concentration camps and rarely knew any happiness.
Fortunately for the next generations, we've all benefited from the sacrifices they made to give us a chance for a good life away from Europe.

Though not Jewish, I cannot help but pay homage to the beautiful prayer scene. It shows the sacred tradition of the Sabbath, its timeless call to gather around the table, light candles, pray, sing, and share a meal in a spirit of fellowship and worship. It shows the centrality of family to the Sabbath, just as the Sabbath sits at the centre of the Ten Commandments, with glory to God foremost and encompassing of all. As part of the prayers, the husband blesses his wife, the parents bless their children, and the family, together, bless the God of the Universe. It is so pure and lovely, as conveyed here, a sanctified, ancient observance given by God to His chosen people and preserved through time as no other.

My favorite scene in the movie. Starting with the typical jabbering of a husband and wife, showing the humanity of Tevye and his wife, Golde. And, the timidity of a suitor of the oldest daughter in asking for her hand in marriage. Then, as the family quickly collects at the table, a lone oboe sets the tone of the gathering. The song, sung exclusively by the parents, is a beautiful expression of the mother and father for the children's good fortune, a meaningful and solemn blessing of the Sabbath tradition. As a father of daughters, one of whom is already married, my heart cannot contain my emotion when Tevye's sings, "May He send you husbands who will care for you." God, I pray that You will grant my daughters those kinds of husbands, there are so very few of these kind and nurturing men in our current day and time. And, finally, the climax slowing building in volume, showing the entire village celebrating together. This is more than mere sentimentality, it is cinematic depth of feeling matched by few.

I recently looked up the cast of this movie, because I was wondering what happened to most of them. I was saddened to learn that the actress who played Golde (Norma Crane) died just 2 years later (in 1973) of breast cancer. She was only 44. And the actor who played Mottel (Leonard Frey) died in 1988 of complications of AIDS. He was 49. Too young. May they rest in peace.
