I really appreciate the translation, I had no idea that this is what the song was about. She was electrifying, totally killed it. That rose bit had me laughing.
I think the role of Carmen has to bring a sense of Alure and Seduction, a hint of mischief and danger, with the exception of grace. Those traits make up the role of Carmen, and it is a bit difficult for I guess some opera singers to bring. But this performance is very sexy and I think that's what make this performance sexy.
@@eroupopper Theatrically, she is excellent. I don't know about the singing part - maybe good, but not great. So, still an enjoyable performance, provided that you are looking, not just hearing. If you want to enjoy Elina at her superlative best, please listen to her singing musica sacra. Hint: search for her magnificent rendition of Césa Frank's "Panis Angelicus"
This is not solely about singing - this is also a great theatrical performance (in case you forgot for a moment that Opera is "sung theatre"). Everything here is in the right measure - pleasure included
Like Shakespeare, it's not enough to just say the words, you have to properly PERFORM it. The Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's the Magic flute is a magnificent feat of vocal gymnastics when merely sung, but PERFORMED, this is a mother making a demand of her daughter with the musical equivalent of "I brought you into this world, and I CAN TAKE YOU OUT OF IT". [For prime example look for the RUclips video of it performed by Diana Damrau, The Royal Opera] Carmen is an utterly amoral temptress, wanton and seductive, and she needs to be performed that way. Elina Garanca NAILED IT.
@@the_Tigro Thanks for stating the obvious. There's a lot more to that though, from her technique to her lung capacity. It's not as simple as the way you say it is.
Good support and breath technique is the answer. You only need to stand and plant yourself if you're a beginner. Lots of singers with good support and breath techniques can sing laying down, it happens a lot in rock singing especially. An example would be Maynard James Keenan from Tool and his weird posture in Sober live, and when he once sang a song while wrestling a drunk audience member who invaded the stage.
I've never seen a singer perform Carmen this way. She wears her sex appeal so casually and with such ingrained confidence that it actually makes her seem almost inappropriate while not at all being so outwardly. Masterful hand.
Dear Taka Ono Very interesting your comments. So I translated it to Portuguese (Brasil): Nunca vi uma cantora executar Carmen desta forma.
And what a singer! This opera is really difficult to sing, and she performs it so effortlessly, even while sitting down. Have really big respect for her.
Am I the only one who loves the fact that she actually knows how to squeeze a piece of clothing and she does it so naturally? I know it doesn't seems to be important, but do you remember that scene from Goodwill Hunting when Matt Damon is mopping the floor and You can see that the actor doesn't really know how to mop the floor? 😆
I never saw Matt Damon mopping the floor, but I understand your point. She probably never squezes her clothes at home but she knows. Men never pay attention to washing or mopping except when they are janitors. The production of the film should have had Matt mopping the floor until he learned to do it properly.
Binu George what does "the characters are a lot more animated than this" even mean? You get more points in opera for moving about? Absolute nonsense, most people go to opera for the quality of the singing!
Smoothmicra absolutely false. Opera is just as much about acting as it is about singing. If you watch opera just for the singing you might as well just go to a concert.
Which would be a fair point if he said the acting was much better in the earlier performance, but he didn't, he said it was "more dynamic", whatever that means. Opera is, of course, a balance of acting and singing, wouldn't disagree. To counter your point though, you can listen to an opera on the radio and enjoy it immensely, however you wouldn't get the same pleasure from watching it without sound, regardless of how good the acting is! :)
Jasmine Agree 100%. Her performance is out standing and I swear her singing improves dramatically. I keep waiting for the men around her to burst into flame. She projects so much sexual energy she must raise the temperature at the Met by 10 or 20 degrees.
The moment with the flower on the soldier's belly is wonderful and extremely provocative! I didn't expect that, the director has shown some nerve there. And what about the actress... The perfect Carmen, an extraordinary performance!
I often come back to this video,it's one of my favourite interpretations of this opera ever, voice and acting are both on point.Elina Garanca perfectly embodies Carmen's free, rebellious and sultry spirit:Carmen is shamelessly herself leaving nothing to subtlety.
I've seen Carmen live a couple of times, and also watched more renditions than I can remember. However, Elina's portrayal of the lead better captures the sultry, mischievous and positively devilish flirting character of Carmen better than any soprano I have seen. It's all in those eyes which are simply mesmerising.
I agree 100. She is the total package, how many times, you saw not mezzo to jump in... she is the real one and great neutral package, not too extreme such as old portray as a horny, or dominated...leave it to our own imagination...
I agree with you. Seing her out of the scene would make one think she would play Juliet or Marguerite, but here she is showing that she can be "devilish flirting" too.
She is a dynamic, forceful talent of very high intelligence and naughty humor. A tremendous musician too. Very different from the very great Cecilia Bartoli in tone and style but are we not fortunate to walk this scorched earth with two such enormously gifted, hard-working musical singers/actors as these two ladies....keeping in mind how very easy it is to criticize and find fault even with the Angels.

And yes, it is Funny and Sweet. Might be able to find it Free on RUclips.
It's incredible that she managed to eat an orange during singing this. Oranges make you drool like crazy, I opened one during the break of our opera choir and got yelled at and the windows had to all be open because of the citrus scent.
I am not really sure if she actually ate it or it was already pre-cut and she pretended to eat it. Or even if it is a real orange. We see it from the back.
I was singing this tune (as best as i could) to myself the other day, and today YT (collaborating with my everlistening phone) had suggested me this video. I’m so thankful for today’s technology
Think about this. All those people milling around the stage are amazing singers. Massively more talented that any pop singer that has ever lived. Each and every one of them.
Joe Smith, i wonder if they always play/sing their parts in background pieces. I mean,a whole career mainly as a background performer with no first role acts at all.

CptSeagullEight - a lighter voice will not be able to get through the card scene in this opera. Think Julia Migenes-Johnson. She was a fantastic Carmen in the 1980s movie, but she herself said that she couldn't sing this role on stage. (edited to add) Besides - Carmen isn't an ingenue or young lady. She is a vulgar gypsy who works in a cigar or cigarette factory and occasionally helps smugglers by seducing body guards. Lighter voices are better suited for ingenues like Zerlina.
CptSeagull Eight Antonacci has an interesting voice. She actually started as a mezzo soprano and then switched to soprano roles apparently, so she clearly has strong low notes, IMHO. Now, Sarah Brightman would be a joke, she'd not even be heard in soubrette roles which is why I named Migenes-Johnson who has a light soprano voice and mostly performed in musicals, but who nevertheless was able to sing Lulu at the Met to much acclaim. Migenes-Johnson was a nice Carmen in the movie, not sure if you've seen it.
CptSeagull Eight - I was curious about Antonacci, so I read about her. I am not a singer even though I had voice lessons for personal enjoyment when I was already out of college and working. I had a light soprano, but it is way too light for opera. At any rate, I could never sing in public, totally losing it in front of people, maybe only in front of friends in my living room. I don't know much about metal though. Brightman voice is very small, nice timbre but so thin, and yes, she cannot do lower notes.
It's an opera, operatic plots aren't exactly realistic, not to mention that the stage director moved the action from the original setting in 19th century Spain to the Spain during the Civil War. (edited to add) If you want to have a laugh about some operatic plots, you can watch Bugs Bunny parody on opera "That's opera doc".

Everyone who is watching here it is quite amused by her flirtatious and straightforward demeanor, and I live for it. This whole scene shows such strange humanity or unity to it ahah.
While the singing of Elina Garanca is impeccable, she seems to be enjoying letting her hair down so naturally as a young woman and not as a singer. one feels that the setting represents a natural tendency for humans to seek such natural basic conditions. This role is one which any woman would like to play, projecting femininity and a little natural naughtiness and flirting of any young healthy woman, climaxed by the expression, " And if I love you, watch out!" It is wonderful and a privilege to have Elina Garancia projecting herself in all the subtle roles of a beautiful woman. Well done Madam.
It is very encouraging to know of an American who enjoys opera. If you feel that you have a good voice and you enjoy singing, that in itself may mature you into a great singer, Good luck with your singing .
Opera is far better appreciated in America than in Europe, where it's been nearly destroyed by Regietheater, which is why the best singers prefer to work stateside.
Portoinfinitivo 😅😅😅 Higher appretiation for opera in America, seriously? I went to see Fidelio at the Met, high class ensemble, very conventionel staging (I found it quite dull, actually), and it hadn't been on the Met's schedule for years.... thus there were literaly thousands of empty seats. I'd estimate maximum 60% of the tickets were sold. I've never seen anything like that in Munich, Vienna, Salzburg, Paris, Zurich, London, Berlin or anywhere else in Europe.
Portoinfinitivo And you'll hardly find a singer of distinction that strictly works in the US and refuses to work in europe. They work in the US because of the money, and they work in Europe because of the higher prestige, the higher level of professionalism and for sake of art.

@@lovemetu I imagine the costuming and direction is directly pointing to the fact that the character is of the Romani people, and the director wanted to set Carmen apart very starkly from Don Jose. Funny how a single incredible performance will leave you disappointed with any other rendition
I was about to comment that. I just can't watch any other performance of Carmen except Garančas
Callas's rendition may be better!
@@Brian-dq2jc Only about a thousand times 😌
@@eroupopper Theatrically, she is excellent. I don't know about the singing part - maybe good, but not great. So, still an enjoyable performance, provided that you are looking, not just hearing.

It's beautiful.
took the thoughts right out of my mind
Like Shakespeare, it's not enough to just say the words, you have to properly PERFORM it.
The Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's the Magic flute is a magnificent feat of vocal gymnastics when merely sung, but PERFORMED, this is a mother making a demand of her daughter with the musical equivalent of "I brought you into this world, and I CAN TAKE YOU OUT OF IT".
[For prime example look for the RUclips video of it performed by Diana Damrau, The Royal Opera]
Carmen is an utterly amoral temptress, wanton and seductive, and she needs to be performed that way.
Elina Garanca NAILED IT.
2:08 How the hell did she make that look so easy??? She's literally laying back, barely moving her face, yet she projects that high note so loudly.
Because she has a strong voice
the man or woman behind the scene is the real genius, this need weeks of training
@@the_Tigro Thanks for stating the obvious. There's a lot more to that though, from her technique to her lung capacity. It's not as simple as the way you say it is.
yeah, and she's skinning that orange so casually too-
Good support and breath technique is the answer.
Elina Garanca’s acting and singing are breathtaking. I really believe that her performance will never be equalled.
I've never seen a singer perform Carmen this way. She wears her sex appeal so casually and with such ingrained confidence that it actually makes her seem almost inappropriate while not at all being so outwardly. Masterful hand.
Dear Taka Ono
Very interesting your comments. So I translated it to Portuguese (Brasil):

Thanks for the laugh! 🤣 going to watch Goodwill Hunting now😅

I love how "alive" the setting looks, with all the actors engaged in the scene. And Elina was probably made for this role. Superb performance.
+Guilherme Eddino Watch the 1978 version with Placido Domingo as Don Jose. Best version IMO. (The characters are a lot more animated than this. )

Never actually seen a theatrical performance of this piece before, only a straight musical performance. Never realised how openly _sensual_ it can be!
Well, I don't know much but according to my Mom, they started doing this fairly recently. Probably to attract "younger" viewers.
More than usual I mean.
I saw it years ago and it was sensual then too!! Gorgeous...
Really ? But the theatrical performances of this piece are quite common however.
They are singing about how free is love and how its desires couldn't be dominated. How can't it be sensual to wach freedom at it best?
The moment with the flower on the soldier's belly is wonderful and extremely provocative! I didn't expect that, the director has shown some nerve there. And what about the actress... The perfect Carmen, an extraordinary performance!
That soldier is one lucky guy.🌹🤗💘

No joke. She makes me want to be a better man to accept a love like that.
And the smile.
*sopranos shouldn’t even do carmen. but YES do i agree
I agree with you. Seing her out of the scene would make one think she would play Juliet or Marguerite, but here she is showing that she can be "devilish flirting" too.
Carmen is the quasi conter revolution by lasting enty ...there is an great potency by the surround crowds of interrogation to the scene.
Great performance and very naturally acted to perfection.
i agree
She is a dynamic, forceful talent of very high intelligence and naughty humor. A tremendous musician too. Very different from the very great Cecilia Bartoli in tone and style but are we not fortunate to walk this scorched earth with two such enormously gifted, hard-working musical singers/actors as these two ladies....keeping in mind how very easy it is to criticize and find fault even with the Angels.

No, on the contrary she did not.
This is what people really did back then. Standing around, smoking, while watching a single woman sing and wash clothes.

Portoinfinitivo 😅😅😅
Higher appretiation for opera in America, seriously? I went to see Fidelio at the Met, high class ensemble, very conventionel staging (I found it quite dull, actually), and it hadn't been on the Met's schedule for years.... thus there were literaly thousands of empty seats. I'd estimate maximum 60% of the tickets were sold. I've never seen anything like that in Munich, Vienna, Salzburg, Paris, Zurich, London, Berlin or anywhere else in Europe.

And you'll hardly find a singer of distinction that strictly works in the US and refuses to work in europe. They work in the US because of the money, and they work in Europe because of the higher prestige, the higher level of professionalism and for sake of art.

Tudo perfeito: voz, encenação. Não canso de ver este vídeo. Ópera é pra quem tem bom gosto.
A obra foi simplesmente fenomenal..
While watching this video, the only thing I wanted was for it to never end, that voice, that music, that scene, that woman, everything is perfect.

L'amour (x4)

I just want to point out how strong everyone's facial acting is. Like I've never seen or heard the full opera but just based on the facial acting alone I can gather that she is involved somehow with the two officers. The cheeky smile on the one facing away from her smoking, the angry scowl on the bald dude as she taunts him and to say nothing of the smiles and looks that Elina gives them both...that so much can be conveyed in a look alone is mindblowing
Gracias Elina.
Voilà!!!!!
She so beautiful, elegant, and talented, your voice is strong and melodic, your eyes are daring.
She's also humble from what I saw during the intermissions in this production.
You know when someone is so good they actually ruin it for everyone else? Man I feel sorry for whomever gets compared to her.
Her talent is amazing! And the stage looks incredible!
It's Elina :) a Latvian singer)
Amigo, há um grande equívoco nesse vídeo.
Quem está cantando é a Brasileira Carmen Monarcha. Pesquise quem é Alina e quem é Carmen e depois me diga
No more perfect performance of this scene, in every aspect, starting and ending with Elina Garanca. Fantastico!
my first time to listen to opera and not gonna be my last for sure there is something mesmerizing that I don't understand a word but the feeling, the passion, her voice and ofcourse her eyes did make all the translation I needed
This is simply the best performance of Carmen ever!!!
If you've not seen it: www.metopera.org/user-information/nightly-met-opera-streams/ -- see December 4th (but make sure you go there from "nightly opera stream" link on the main page and not from this schedule.
This is great opera. Great opera happens when the performers move, act, and interpret the piece for the audience. They don't just stand there and sing. It's the same with Shakespeare. Well done Shakespeare is really entertaining because you get what's happening even if you don't get all the words.
With a full, warm voice and a special magnetism, she is one of the strongest "Carmens"!✨️⚘️
I think Elinca Garanca is one of the best opera singers.
Her voice is sweet and dynamic.
Of course she is so beautiful.
She is.
