    as a gm tech, some points that may or may not be too late. the carrier races are supposed to be loose as they're adjusted by screw collars under the part they're sitting on to set carrier bearing preload and backlash. the right side stub axle doesn't knock/pop out of the extension housing like the shorter left side, its retained by a ring and comes off the chunk with the extension housing, and that round piece with the two ears, that is now concave due to having the axle stub and ring pulled though it
    this journey inside the diff was certainly started by someone changing the pinion seal, and they uggadugga'd the flange back on and fuckered the preload on the pinion bearings, the other mild carnage found around the shift fork was likely brought to you by 500k miles and others knocking the right side stub axle out to replace the seal, instead of unbolting the housing and servicing it on the bench, the thrust bearing drops down and gets beaten into submission on axle installation by whatever mongo that was "fixing" it
    if the servo for the fork on the front diff is not being powered it won't lock in the right side axle, the transfercase can shift but the diff dumps anything sent to it through the spider gears and just freewheels

    • @Ol2Stroker
      @Ol2Stroker  5 месяцев назад +1

      I did see the carrier preload adjustment points however one side race was significantly tighter than the other. I didn't see how that race wouldnt spin in the housing with as loose as it was. That sounds like a typical gm design though.

    • @wdixon27
      @wdixon27 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@Ol2Strokeri've rebuilt a ton of them at the dealer and they don't spin like you would expect a loose race to, the typical failure mode is the locking ring you drive into the adjuster to hold it from moving, strips out and you lose preload which trashes the gears, or a ring gear bolt falls out and gets shoved though the housing,
      or water contaminated fluid kills the pinion bearings as they're the fastest moving things in the housing

    I’ve had a mint 95 GMT 400 for bout 12 years now. I too just had to have it because it spent its life in Arizona and didn’t have a spec of rust on it. Well, I know some folks think that the GMT400 was the best years of Chevy trucks ever built. All I can say is that if they were the best I’m glad that I didn’t buy the worst. The front diff in mine was so shot when I got it that I came out way cheaper finding a whole assembly in a salvage yard than trying to repair it. They are weaker than popcorn farts. It would be much quicker for me to tell you what I haven’t had to fix than it would be to list what I have had to fix. I still think that the GMT400 are great looking trucks. I guess that’s why I still have mine.👍

    It's gonna be JUNE, in like 2 weeks...HFS...I don't miss upstate NY weather. I can't remember very many times it snowed that late in the year growing up, even back before "global warming", even way up in Oswego, Watertown or in Ontario on the other side of the St. Lawrence river where my grandparents were from. You've definitely got some stones to stay up there. I am not sure how I feel about that truck...in some ways it's a peach and in other ways I'd be losing sleep...at least it's not expected to be a daily or anything, just a curiosity with a really cool engine. I'd probably feel stoked if it was a manual transmission, a 4L60E is one of the few transmissions that would sketch me out.

    Referencing your previous video, you gotta remember that the trans want's to see 5500 RPM at WOT upshift. The pump is also developing max (relieved) pressure at that point. 2100 RPM is a light throttle upshift. (Well, my 671 is set at 2100 RPM, anyway) It's blacktop dyno to get the right setting! Also, lock-up torque converters can have overrunning clutches in them, so there is no engine braking. At least, that's what they taught us back in 1989!
    As to your running doggy, my uncle relayed the story to me of a 671 (truck) he bought with no power. For whatever reason, the person who "rebuilt the head" removed the orifice from the fuel return and installed a regular brass fitting, thereby reducing the rail pressure to next to nothing.

    Solid axle swap that beast lol that fuel gauge is hilarious it doesn’t know if it wants to be full or empty and it’s prob the electronic coupler in the front axle acting up. The transfer case is mechanical so it more then likely going into 4wd hi and low but the front electronic coupler I bet is the prob. It’ll be 2wd in 4low with that coupler messed up.

    The 4wd engagement motor sucks. It’s a wax motor like a thermostat, so it has to heat up to shift into 4wd. You can unscrew it, throw in a chunk of steel 7/8” long (I think, research that number), then screw it back in. Unplug the power to it, and you will have the front end engaged all the time. I’m seeing no ill effects longevity wise, and you can shift into 4wd at any speed. And that needle bearing no longer has to do any work, so it won’t wear out again.
