What a nice swap, even leaves plenty of room in the engine bay to work. You could've shoehorned a 453 in there but I'm glad you didn't, also can't imagine the added weight would've done any favours for the handling. This is the right Detroit for this truck, no question. Thanks for the video.
Fuckin oath what a conversion , needs turbo and jacobs brake added , exhaust up corner of cab as its definitely a truck by sound it needs to look it , top shit mate love it
100KM/H is not too bad. My parents had a 1977 Landcruiser FJ40 with a six cylinder gas engine and a four speed transmission and Dad briefly had it up to 110 KM to get past some idiot, but it was very unhappy doing it. These vehicles were never meant for speed, but for going through the bush where low end torque was more important.
the gears are helical. the noise comes from the straight blower rotors. 2 stroke detroits are not super charged. they are naturally asperated. if you need boost, you add a turbo.
Very nice! A bit less space than how it fit in my truck (in the profile picture a 59 Chev Apache), but great setup. They are great engines, but like you say, not exactly quiet. I put a second transmission behind to get speeds up for the same reason. probably my most viewed video because they are so cool!
I'd sooner attack the rear end ratio than go with twin transmissions. My 85 F150 came factory with a wide ratio 4-speed and 2.49 rear gears; 75mph is only about 1700RPM and the gearing in it would probably be better suited to a 4-53 Detroit than it is to the 300cid gas I6 it actually has! Good as the 300 is, a 4-53 or 6v53 would out-torque it too, so the thing'd probably accelerate a bit faster too lol. The upper limit of what these old trucks can tow was never their engine anyway. It was the brakes, the steering. I have pulled >7000 pounds with my 85 in the past; clutch was not liking life very much but otherwise it did it. Only rated 5500. With a detroit 2-stroke in the nose I'd be able to pull whatever I wanted to without issue. Still be limited by suspension, tires, brakes. Maybe that's what I'll do with my 95. Detroit 2-stroke swap it. That one has the same 300 I6, but instead of a wide ratio 4spd and 2.49 diff gears, it's got the ZF 5-speed and 3.08s out back.
@@TestECull sounds to me like your 85 has the perfect gear ratios a guy could ask for. This inline 6 300s were a fantastic engine really, though I prefer diesel- old ones anyway.. especially Detroits. The perfect engine swap would probably be something like a Mitsubishi engine I've got in a generator. 6D31-T. 302 cubic inch 117hp @ 1800 rpm with turbo. Quiet and very good on fuel. For me, the sweet spot is enough power and least fuel burned. As for your beginning saying rear end ratios over 2nd transmission. Yes. Except for money & options. I did my Detroit swap in 1991 before internet & had no money, but had donor truck parts.
@@lovesloudcars Mmhmm. Well that 300 is known as a diesel-with-spark-plugs to many anyway. Has about the same powerband as one of these 53-series 2-strokes, just not the earthshattering raw torque. But ye I think a 2.49 or 2.73 rear end with one of these baby Jimmies and a 4-speed or 5-speed manual would make for a vehicle that's quite comfortable on the interstate. 1700rpm is a pretty comfy spot for one of these Detroit 2-strokes to sit at for cruise when put in a pickup, yanno?
Was already in there when we got it. The 353 isnt very long being only 3 cylinder so it seems to fit in easily length wise. The exhaust was a bit of a pain as we had to re-do that, as last owner had a home made manifold which had poor flow.
@@calhumps that's a cool conversion 👌 Not sure I'd do it but I'm glad you did haha. You pretty much need heading protection in a 40 series of you travel over 80km/h anyway. Nice work 👍
FYI... it is just a positive displacement blower, it creates NO boost. Not a supercharger, it's a blower. Now can you put one on a 4 stroke engine with some modifications to make a it a supercharger? Yes but in native usages it just moves air, doesn't compress it at all. Want a power adder, add a turbo.
Its great that there are still a few crazy people left in this world, l love it.
That a cool ride! The oil leaking out of the Detroit will help prevent rust to the underside!

Fantastic swap! It sounds great. No better sounding diesel than a Detroit. Thank you for sharing
A very cool old truck, thanks for posting
What a thing of rare beauty, love Detroits.
Detroits finest engine in Toyotas finest 4x4! AWESOME!!
Japan could use some GM power 😅
Coolest HJ ever, I would love to annoy my neighbours with that👍

That actually sounds good. I like the sound of all of them but 871-892 my favs. 653 if I were to swap in my truck for sure.
The RPM's are high in this one !!! I feel the Force is strong...... She's the Dux Guts 😎😎😁😁
Was wanting to do this with my 96 Dodge Dakota. Lots of torque.
yeah but you need to change the gearing. That is why their unit only does 60mph
Work of Art guys you did good..
Sounds like my old Deere 440 ICD and looks like my old Land Cruiser, what a great combo !!!!!

It's all in the gearing. They'll rev to 2500 rpm so the right gears it'll do better than 110 mph.
@@jerrykinnin7941 Ours was stock and only saw a road trip once a year. 70 MPH was pushing it.
Just love old Detroit motors
That's a beauty man
All it needs now is a 10 speed roadranger and a jake brake! Anyway the original Toyota donk was heavily based on GM’s Stovebolt six so it’s still GM
Yes to the 10 speed and jake brake!
Sick truck!!❤🤙🏻that thing is beautiful!
she's a beast, great job
love the blower whine, straight cut gears :)

@@georgedemas7718 All Detroit Roots Blowers have slightly helical rotors.
Fit's like a glove! Nice!
Bloody brilliant 😎👍
Only a crazy Kiwi would build a thing like that.
God, the only thing that would make this Land Cruiser any better would be a turbo, what a great truck
how did you mate it to the gearbox
By far the best sounding 3 pot in the world!! Only thing that comes close imo is the Commer "knocker" TS3
Now you just need to add a Jake Brake🤣
Exhaust brake?? Would have one just for the sound
That's amazing

Great looking machine. A lotto win and she’d be mine :-). Good luck with the sale on TM. Cheers.
Thanks mate. Shes off to a new home now.
@@calhumps what was she worth?
Oh hell yes. 🤘🤘
Probably outperform that little 4 Cummins. Cool!
Very cool!
Just like a Harley Davidson. Converting fuel into noise without the unwanted side effects of power and speed!
What kind of horsepower and torque does that thing make? Sounds awesome.
Heaps of torque. Never went on a dyno
Any information on the adapter plate?
No sorry. Not in our ownership anymore
Sick cool
I like the 353 GM powered Toyota. How does it get along the road? Do you still have it?
Nah sold it a few years ago. Very noisey on road and was full noise at 100kmph
@@calhumpsI'd like to see some pictures of it? Do you have any pictures of the Toyota with the 353 in it?

Ok thanks I was looking at doing something like that
Hell yeah
So good!
What’s it like on fuel?
Haha sounds different 😆
How do you find the noise and vibration levels in the cab? Sounds revvy, how does it behave? Plenty of torque off idle?
Vibrations not too bad. Noise, well yes. Probably best to wear ear protection for long trips...
And decent amount of torque but from memory dont think the engine revs that high.

Great truck , was this filmed at Albion park airport??
Nah nelson airport
Los Detroit diesel antiguos son los mejores, son más duros y confiables y de gran torque
Did you put the original gear box in or is it different
Original gear box, but it is a later 40 series 4 speed, not the 3 speed the 1973 model came out with.
How much, name your price 😎👍👍😁😁
Hobart?
Does it have a jake brake?
Nah
Listen to the blower sing!!!
Put a totally enclosed air cleaner on it with muffler on intake. Then sound insulation under the hood. Big difference.
Motor diesel 2 tempos é muito melhor que o de 4 tempos. E o som é maravilhoso. Ainda teria um.
seems to work ok 353 might be a bit vocal but it starts it runs it goes whats it like towing ?? an overdrive trans would make it better maybe
Towing was fine i believe, yes it needed over drive, 100km/h was max speed
Perfect 10
l frickin love it... so cool l want to do the same thing..

Out last a Cummins. Detroits are tough.
Need a GM NV4500 in it.
What it should have had from the factory.
Needs a gearing change for me. A lot of noise for not much zing. Beautiful motor though 👍

sounds like an old 2 stroke 3 cyl saab or wartburg 353
Qantuz HP? ?

Yes
It's not a supercharger, it's a scavenging blower.

Another butchered Land Cruiser. Loud, poor fuel economy and spins the wheels. Everything a Cruiser isn't supposed to be.
