They are called Skillet because the original members had a lot of varied influences that they all threw in the "skillet" that made the recipe for the band's sound. They are actually one of the most popular rock bands in the US right now. The bass player/lead vocalist, John and the keyboardist, Korey, are married. I got to meet John back in the late 90s and he's a great dude with a huge heart!

This song didn’t show that their female drummer also does vocals, so when they do it’s a pretty neat dynamic to hear the to voices bounce off each other

this was indeed ALL over rock radio when this came out. One of my local stations even used an instrumental loop of this specific song as transition music while a DJ was talking. Got beat to death, but the main riff is so good this will forever be a guilty pleasure.

You should react to "A Little Piece of Heaven" by "Avenged Sevenfold", a song from a popular metal band, the song is hugely inspired by Oingo Boingo and Mr. Bungle.

I really think that when you get a chance to listen to something different you should try to listen to the band “Red”. I think that their most recent album “Declaration” is definitely one of their hardest albums with the last song not being as punchy as the rest of the album.

I'm not the one who requested this, but your bit at the beginning about not knowing whether the person's still subscribed prompted me to say that, as the person who spammed Sylosis requests for a long time, I'm still here and hanging out! I stopped spamming them because I saw that you put a "love" on one of them, so I figure it's in your queue and I don't need to keep requesting it :)

I listened to Skillet a lot in middle/high school since I came from a very religious family and they are a christian rock band. Looking at Spotify is seems Monster is their biggest hit (I haven't followed them for years) but I would suggest their album Collide which I think was by far their best (far heavier, less "generic radio rock"). Some songs from that album would be Open Wounds, Collide, Fingernails, Energy, or Cycle Down

  • @jon27d

One of the things a little more unique about Skillet (that is not highlighted on this track) is their use of symphonics. Lots of their songs have more traditional stringed instruments woven into the rock. I saw someone else mention it here, but Awake and Alive is one that comes to mind by Skillet.
Personally, I would love to see you take a look at music by Anberlin. They're more in the alternative vein on the rock spectrum and definitely have some unique vocals and arrangements. Their songs Modern Age and Unwinding Cable Car are two of my all-time favorites.

+1 for “Imperfection” on the next Skillet video. I feel like it’s one of the more complex and unique among Skillet’s hard rock song selection. It is also from my favorite album of theirs. It’s amazing that this song turned 5x Platinum this year. Love this song. I heard a few people say they don’t know how to play drums or guitar yet they continue to perform and get more and more popular. But also the messages within their songs are great as well. Skillet is the type of band that doesn’t care what other people say about them as far as negativity goes because they’re all about positivity. They got millions of followers who love them and their music and the energy when they’re live is just mind blowing. Good stuff

Skillet has a long history - they got their start in 1996, with a sound that was mostly a heavy grunge, but with a hint of progginess on their self-titled debut. My favorite songs off that album are "Gasoline" (an original, not a cover) and "Saturn" - a gorgeous acoustic piece.
Their second album ("Hey You, I Love Your Soul") is their most "prog" - with bassist/vocalist John Cooper's wife Corey joining in on keyboards & synths - favorite songs are "Deeper" and "Suspended In You".
Several interesting but less impactful albums followed, but 2003's "Collide" marked a significant change in style/sound for the band - with two songs I consider among their best: "Open Wounds" and "Fingernails". Both are autobiograpical and painfully honest - excellent songs!
"Comatose" - from 2006 - had a particular stand-out song for me - "Whispers In the Dark" has a bit of a goth feel added to the sharp metal sound Skillet had grown into - and an excellent guitar solo using a harmonizer.

I think you would LOVE Apocalyptica. They are four classically trained cellists who created a rock/metal band. This is best illustrated with their song/video Path. They did later come out with a Path Vol 2 which is the same song but with a German singer. ALL of their songs with vocals are always with guest vocals, and I think this adds an extra layer to their awesomeness as artists.

Skillet's first album (self-titled) from 1996 shows why they can really do. 10 songs and not a single one sounds like the other. Skillet's last good album was "Comatose" from 2006. I really do hate to use the phrase but it's the only one that works: they went corporate. They've still put out some songs I enjoy, it's just no longer an entire album's worth. I don't begrudge them their success, I just wish they'd rediscover their roots and inject some variety back into their music.

Oh gosh. I grew up in a pretty strict southern Baptist household, and thus was only allowed to listen to and buy Christian music bought from a Christian bookstore at our local mall, until I was like 15 or so. I remember one day my Mom brought home two new “edgy” rock albums for me. Skillet was one of them and I have always really disliked them from the first listen. (The other band was called Tourniquet and I actually liked that one). But this type of nu-metal rock with those (imo) terrible vocals is what my friends and I eventually classified as “butt rock”; before that title was created for bands like Disturbed and 3 Days Grace. Random personal story I know, I was just hit with a lot of nostalgia upon seeing and hearing this song, despite how much I dislike them.

Never cared for Skillet. The drummer, Jen, doesn't know how to tune or hit the snare so it always sounds off.

I’ve never heard this band, only heard of the frontman and his stupid opinions on most everything.
