Are you kidding? Absolutely everybody in the London gay community knew about "Pippy" Schofield since he first appeared on Children's BBC in 1985. Scurrilous (and no doubt slanderous) jokes about "how Andi Peters got his job" were commonplace.
We howled with laughter at his oh-so-recent "coming out". Department of the Bleeding Obvious. But also of the bleeding heart, complete with the brushed away tear and tributes to his "honesty" (ha, ha!) and "bravery".

Afterwards, there was no Joan and there was no mention of her being gone or even that she had been ON the show.. Freddy Mercury didn't hold a door open for him once and so he gave him aids on purpose. If you listen carefully to Elton John's performance at Diana's funeral, the piano was out of tune. Zoom in on said piano and you can see Schofield hiding underneath it with an adjustable wrench. It's widely believed Elton refused to give him a reacharound the night before in a Tesco carpark. Phillip looks terrified when Julian started on him. Interesting the director kept a camera on him the whole time with only one other camera doing quick grabs of others. The boom mics were all in place over the audience so we could here them but not over the stage, hence the need for a handheld mic. Julian knew, absolutely. Phillip's wife knew but like a lot of wives who are well kept financially and socially, she turned a blind eye as long as he was discreet. Phillip only confessed as the Editor of The Sun passively blackmailed him into an exclusive interview or they were going to publish on Monday- that's the only reason someone on holiday "pops" into work to confess his sins on tv. And because he dropped the boy Matthew McGrevey, he'd groomed since he was young and got him a job as a runner on This Morning, and McGreevy was angry and threatened to expose him too. Having grown up in the theatre industry and working in television for 30+ years, it is rife! I was hit on by many "straight" men over the years.both Ranson and Street-Porter have said they knew about Savile but as women in tv at the time, they had to keep their mouths shut. Shame on them. Thank you for bringing up Matthew. He was 15 years old when Phillip was first introduced to him & Matthew had said he wanted to work in television. Phillip took him "under his wing". He was a runner on the This Morning programme & Phillip started a relationship with him when Matthew was 18. Matthew was 22 or 23 & was still in a relationship with Phillip & wanted to take their relationship to the next stage but Phillip refused as he thought he would lose everything! Matthew did say he would tell the papers & Phillip took out an injunction to gag the papers. Matthew was then moved off the This Morning set onto Loose Women to become their runner all arranged by Phillip!! This was all around the time it was reported that Ruth Langsford had made an official complaint about Phillip, Rylan Clark stopped working on the This Morning show & quite a few people were coming out saying how difficult it was to work with Phillip & how he always managed to get his own way with the channel he worked for. People like Amanda Holden & Eammon Holmes amongst others. Meanwhile Matthew had to leave Phillips flat in London & he returned to his parents house after having a nervous breakdown from the threats from Phillip & being moved to a different show & kicked out of the flat they shared. He actually thought he was in a loving relationship. In the meantime Phillip "comes out" on live TV in an attempt to save his own career & cover things up!!! He puts on an image of what a nice guy he is but he groomed, threatened & bullied this boy. If a man had done that to a young girl all hell would break loose, but this was all swept under the carpet!! I used to like Phillip until I found out about what he had done to Matthew & how ill it had made Matthew. Phillip also knew what his brother had done, but didn't tell the police! Instead he just told his brother never to do it again & then distanced himself from him once he was sent to prison!! Not a nice man at all!!!
      Edited for a spelling mistake.

Anyway, I made a fairly lighthearted/casual remark about "rumours" I'd heard about Schofield, and Paul Smith went virtually "incandescent"...denying it to the point of it being 100% clear that he was absolutely hiding Schofield's little secret. Paul Smith was an absolute bell-end, FWIW. Vile little man, an absolute show-off, and definitely NOT someone I ever wanted to hang out with ever again. But yes...it was crystal clear that the rumours were true after his BFFs outburst. Prat! 🤣 So, yeah, I'm quite certain that most gay people in the industry were not exactly shocked when Schofe finally came out.

I don't follow celebrity culture that much so wasn't aware of what he was up to in the broom cupboard so when he came out as gay I was shocked but not surprised if that makes sense but I did know immediately he only came out for a reason and it was to stop a much bigger story coming out.
Nobody comes out at that age if they've not acted on it and he was seen as the squeaky clean family man so it was obvious there was a bigger story at play that he didn't want coming out.
