Phillip's wife knew but like a lot of wives who are well kept financially and socially, she turned a blind eye as long as he was discreet. Phillip only confessed as the Editor of The Sun passively blackmailed him into an exclusive interview or they were going to publish on Monday- that's the only reason someone on holiday "pops" into work to confess his sins on tv. And because he dropped the boy Matthew McGrevey, he'd groomed since he was young and got him a job as a runner on This Morning, and McGreevy was angry and threatened to expose him too. Having grown up in the theatre industry and working in television for 30+ years, it is rife! Thank you for bringing up Matthew. He was 15 years old when Phillip was first introduced to him & Matthew had said he wanted to work in television. Phillip took him "under his wing". He was a runner on the This Morning programme & Phillip started a relationship with him when Matthew was 18. Matthew was 22 or 23 & was still in a relationship with Phillip & wanted to take their relationship to the next stage but Phillip refused as he thought he would lose everything! Matthew did say he would tell the papers & Phillip took out an injunction to gag the papers. Matthew was then moved off the This Morning set onto Loose Women to become their runner all arranged by Phillip!! This was all around the time it was reported that Ruth Langsford had made an official complaint about Phillip, Rylan Clark stopped working on the This Morning show & quite a few people were coming out saying how difficult it was to work with Phillip & how he always managed to get his own way with the channel he worked for. People like Amanda Holden & Eammon Holmes amongst others. Meanwhile Matthew had to leave Phillips flat in London & he returned to his parents house after having a nervous breakdown from the threats from Phillip & being moved to a different show & kicked out of the flat they shared. He actually thought he was in a loving relationship. In the meantime Phillip "comes out" on live TV in an attempt to save his own career & cover things up!!! He puts on an image of what a nice guy he is but he groomed, threatened & bullied this boy. If a man had done that to a young girl all hell would break loose, but this was all swept under the carpet!! I used to like Phillip until I found out about what he had done to Matthew & how ill it had made Matthew. Phillip also knew what his brother had done, but didn't tell the police! Instead he just told his brother never to do it again & then distanced himself from him once he was sent to prison!! Not a nice man at all!!! Edited for a spelling mistake.

Around about 1991 I was out with a few BBC people, ended up back at Paul Smith's house. Paul Smith was Schofield's "bff" back then (and a BBC producer, and the hand up Gordon the Gopher's bum). Anyway, I made a fairly lighthearted/casual remark about "rumours" I'd heard about Schofield, and Paul Smith went virtually "incandescent"...denying it to the point of it being 100% clear that he was absolutely hiding Schofield's little secret. Paul Smith was an absolute bell-end, FWIW. Vile little man, an absolute show-off, and definitely NOT someone I ever wanted to hang out with ever again. But yes...it was crystal clear that the rumours were true after his BFFs outburst. C'mon, we all knew Philip was gay back in the 90's. I didn't even know it was a secret until I heard he was married. He probably just wanted kids and I'm sure his wife knew. People are together, get married and have kids for many reasons..... also Julian is a comic genius!
Philip is a groomer ... he likes them young very very young , his brother just went down for underage teenage sex offences and he was some kind of police officer and I would imagine Phillips wife is in shock at what she thought was a gay husband and now she knows the reality is its a lot worse than that...
Didn’t Joan Collins say live on tv that they all knew for years? Looking at this clip, either his wife is a very good actress or she had no idea. Even Schofield is shaking his head at Julian.
I saw that bit where Joan Collins said everyone knew for years already, and then she was shushed up in a hurry! I think his wife knew but liked the lifestyle so went along with it. Even now its all "out in the open" they are still together, so what does that tell you!

Philip didn't get the lead of "Joseph" after Jason Donovan gave up the role by coincidence. He was allegedly well-in with Jason Donovan and Andrew Lloyd-Webber. As is often the case one has to "sleep with the right people" to get ahead in many media and theatrical circles. My dad, brother worked in the bbc for decades, I did for a while, I hear what you are saying.!
