    The rocket assist takeoff of the Houthi Drone is called either a "RATO" Rocket Assisted Take Off, or a "JATO" Jet Assisted Take Off, take your pick. The purpose of this "assist" is to give the drone a little bit of altitude but more importantly to get it up to its maximum speed as soon as possible and that is why you hear its propeller whining so loudly because the little onboard engine is revved up to max throttle for takeoff.

    Handy Size Bulk Carrier Master here, currently commanding a ship similar to the "Cyclades". The name of the vessel is better pronanced as "Ki - kla - des". That space behind the bridge is usually the battery room for GMDSS batteries, the bridge toilet, or the aft bulkhead for the staircase leading to the bridge. So there is a chance that the officer of the watch might survive this....

      This is not Sal replying. Ship to Ship transfer of oil cargo is common in most places where the sea does not get rough. So it is done offshore of many Countries. Very common and sometimes a shady practice in shipping. Sometimes it is done legally and sometimes done illegally. It is usually done off port limits and around Malta is one of the common areas.

    It really looks like that drone was targeting the radars on the top of the ship. Various jamming and spoofing techniques were developed from the earliest days of radar. When the USN ships left the area, another navy channel was going on about how the Navy can make a drone or anti-ship missile go somewhere without a ship in it, so that it can't find anything when it turns on its final homing mechanisms. You'd think that the drones could just be flown manually from land, but the link is easily disrupted and the transmitter is easily triangulated (spoofing drone command signals to make it look like the transmitter is somewhere else generally doesn't work because of signal integrity and timing issues), so these drones are likely automated like the mystery attack that occurred a few years before this fight.
    They have been consistently hitting the wrong targets since day 1. It is very likely that they are being directed to the area of other countries' ships, instead of to a safe area where they'd fail to acquire a target. The technology to disrupt these drones is WWII tech, the tech to protect all of the ships is all over the place, but 'someone' is attacking these ships with redirected hootie drones for their own purposes. Therefore, while the Hooties are taking the blame for these attacks... Which they very likely initiated (with tech that they would not naturally have without a state sponsor). Their source of weapons is the appropriate target.
    Whomever is redirecting them onto ships that weren't part of the conflict to bring other countries into the fray is committing an inexcusable act. It's very transparently a deliberate attack on various nations' shipping by whomever is controlling these drones from the intended targets to others, when it's so much easier and less expensive to just crash the drone into the water. At least the Hooties called fair warning on their campaign. This other group doesn't have the honor, nor decency of even a terrorist. Liberty V2.0

    So why not have a drop off and pick up point for Phalanx / CWIS which can be plugged in to the ships power supply apart from that they seem fairly self contained. I am sure any ships engineer can weld in mounts and supply enough power to run them and that way at least through rental prices money can be obtained from various flagged vessels to cover ammunition if used crew to maintain said items and it would be cheaper than paying for ships to be running a floating protection racket. Just my 2 cents worth, but not as bright as Sal's shirts 😄

      They make a land based system that is mounted on a military style tractor trailer. Used during the Afghanistan withdrawal, it's part of the C-RAM system and is called the Centurion LPWS (land phalanx weapons system). Not much larger (length and width) than a commercial container used for shipping and trucking, it may be possible to lift the entire trailer onto a ship using a dockside heavy lift crane. No idea how many were made but sounds like the design and technology already exists.

    • @concinnus
      @concinnus 20 дней назад +1

      @@dependablepaul Backporting the trailer-borne version of CIWS may seem easier, but it might still be impossible (trailer weighs like 50k lbs iirc), and would be ineffective regardless. You couldn't drop it on top of the superstructure, so it would have blind spots that the Houthi would exploit. The correct solution would be to automate a smaller gun like a GPMG but those are still in prototype or limited production tmk.

    the Yemeni Armed Forces and Ansar Allah can equip attack drones with a number of 9m133 Kornet EM missiles with a range between 8 km for the HEAT warhead, and with a penetrating capabilities of 1300 mm of equivalent armor, meaning 1.3 m of alloy composite armor and 10 km for the thermobaric warhead, and utilizing them to attack commercial ships with a mixture of these munitions from a safe distance.
    here they can also engage combat vessels and even try to score hits against it from safe distances, or at least force them to use the more expensive air defense ABM missiles to try to shoot down those Kornet missiles...
    With a weight of 33 kg for the missile, some attack drones can carry from 500 kg to 750 kg, meaning from 15 to 20 9M133 Kornet missiles with a precise laser guidance system that enables it to hit its targets with extreme accuracy, so that they can hit the same point of impact with this amount of missiles repeatedly, which may cause serious or catastrophic damage to the ship or even cause it to sink...
    there is a needs for experimentation and testing of weapons systems and combat equipments, in addition to testing the tactical and operational employments of those weapon systems especially in infiltrating the vicinity of targets and then engaging them from safe distance's.
    For example, the Russians or the Iranians did not try to install the 9M133e/em Kornet on their large fleet of attack helicopters such as the cobra although the bgm71tow fired by the cobra attack helicopters is considered inferior to the 9m133e/em kornet, although the bgm is wire guided while the 9m133 kornet is laser guided which make it in current configuration more susceptible to bad weather, neither the lighter Iranian bell 214, or the Russians on the Mi-35. Or Mi-28 or Kamov-52 or on their medium and heavy weight attack drone...
