Over 95 kms from Ashdod port to the Rafah checkpoint, crossing into Gaza at the Kerem Shalom point. If Egypt let them use the Egyptian side and enter Rafah there, the convoys would be better protected, as they would have to be attacked within Egyptian territory for that last distance (about 3.25 km) I doubt HAMAS would want to do that.
Big question is: will HAMAS dare to attack the ships and men on the pier/connectors/ships, aka, foreign non-combatants?
That would bring them to a war footing with the US as well, and that is a BIG OUCH!
@@WhiteWolf65 If "BIG OUCH" were an effective deterrent HAMAS wouldn't have attacked Israel.
@@WhiteWolf65 Hamas is a death cult, but they aren't totally brainless. Their beef is mainly with Israel, and attacking US soldiers while Israel is increasingly isolated internationally would not further their goals.
No American troops on the ground eh ? Bloody liars .
@@WhiteWolf65the question is will the USS Liberty be remembered???
Fairly certain it was not Hamas that attacked the USS Liberty.
I was once the CMC for ACB1. The RRDF (Roll On/Roll Off Discharge Facility) is what you're calling an "offshore pier". The INLS is the basis of the Navy and Army's system, pier or causeway, the SLWTs (pronounced Sluts),is just one of two powered lighterage used. This is an enormously complex logistics effort, a stupidly inefficient method to get throughput ashore. When the administration said "no boots on ground" I knew that was a lie.
The effort to get all this back to the US will be every bit as daunting as getting it there.
I can't believe anyone thought this was a good idea. Seastate 3+ is the systems designed maximum operating environment. These are not in production, they were all built in the same yard that built one of the LCS systems.
I try to avoid all the acronyms as it gets confusing for those not in the know. Thanks for the comments!
Did a jlots mission off of the Ben v miss doing that stuff when I was in the army good times. Us army can’t move without transportation
This is the USA they have unlimited military power/money. They are also doing this as a training mission for a real war.
The two big wars right now are like a wet dream for USA, massively profitable, weakening the enemy daily, gaining intel for if we ever actually have to get involved. Doing all this while loosing 0 American lives is definitely the picture perfect wet dream for USA.
I use to be a LZ on anl doing smgs for my msi and the co got mad and told the sdo I was rasn and I almost got a bln for doing my mso go figure..
CMC Good you point to correct terms
Will point out this was a way for the U.S. to become involved with providing aid without "boots on the ground." It's political, thus by nature, not efficient.
The fact that we live in a country where someone, an much less some of the highest ranking public officials, claim that this is not boots on the ground is really depressing. It's so profoundly manipulative and disrespectful at best, and if its not those it's an offensive level of stupidity.
I think it's an excuse to put US troops in harms way so once they are killed those deaths can be used as justification for further US involvement. Building this in an active war zone is a terribly stupid idea.
@@something86783 To clarify, I understand this is rubbish. If the enemy is within range, so are you.

I think this is less about efficiency of getting cargo into Gaza and more about being able to control a point of access into Gaza. While Israel is still inspecting cargo, that process is already happening and once you have it cleared it is then completely up to the JLOTS operation to move it in. Israel has been stymying aid deliveries, this is the US's way of proving to the world it wants aid in Gaza and is willing to take a unilateral approach. Highly inefficient though, I agree. I also agree this highlights a need to update and upgrade these systems.
All the best, love the channel
That is my sense too, but I'm surprised the US has this issue.
I understand why the IDF doesn't trust UN aid deliveries and may fear they will smuggle in weapons but they are allowing the US to ship in these shipments so why wouldn't they just agree to let in trucks provided they are taken to the crossing by US military personnel (or is at an issue about trust of contractors).
Something seems odd.
@@petergerdes1094 The OP said, " Israel is still inspecting cargo". It certainly seemed like he was referring to THIS cargo. Whether that's true or not I don't know.
(And if I were Israeli I certainly wouldn't trust the US to not ship weapons or dual use materiel to HAMAS. The US arming both sides isn't exactly unknown to happen.)
@@gandydancer9710 The IDF may not want to trust the US but they *are* trusting the us either way since they don't get to inspect our over the shore deliveries. So why allow that but not unloading in port?
As I understand it, Israeli personnel are in Cyprus inspecting/clearing all cargo before it's loaded for the transit to JLOTS.
@@2uksteve Ok but then why not still do that and let it go through the normal port?
I was on the BOB HOPE last year off the coast of North Australia during talisman saber when the army attempted to perform a JLOTS operation it was calm weather the day we arrived. For the next month it was nothing but wind and a higher sea state...... towards the end they did a partial operation with it but it had glaring weaknesses with the high sea state. I felt sorry for the army guys down on the barges trying to get them to come together it looked so dangerous with waves coming over them. The purpose of the mission is a political gesture, but also useful to highlight lack of US naval preparedness. Efficiency is completely secondary.
Washington is pretending to care about Palestinians to offer plausible deniability to our frenemies (who don't care about them either and certainly aren't insane enough to import them).
The show of expensive activity will likely serve its purpose. Meanwhile Israel can finish its punitive constabulary mission in Rafah. The important part from a US military perspective
is to show (the public feel, they do not think) US capability is constrained by decades of neglect and that our Navy desperately needs a collective overhaul before war breaks out over Taiwan.
Beijing is watching and will see how UNprepared the US is even for a small feelgood mission. The CCP will watch and learn.
This could play into Beijings "3 front" plan, to occupy the US on 3 fronts.
Hope US top brass are not too blind to see this.
Lack of preparedness how?

Fast-forward 80 years, and here we go again with a lot of men and vital equipment in a terribly overextended and vulnerable position.
Thank You. QMC Navy, Vietnam Vet and MSC deck officer Ret. They are indeed making this way too hard.
Gaza has no seaport, no airport, and Israel controls all road crossings. Israel is not allowing much aid through those crossings. What is your simple solution to feed two million starving civilians?
You are SO stupid if you think they're starving! Have you SEEN recent pictures of the Gaza plentiful markets? I have!@@myquealer
The USG operating in the most expensive and least efficient way possible? I'm shocked, I say, shocked!
Now look into diplomacy.
How long has it taken and is the port complete yet? Imagine the US trying to resupply Taiwan. With 10x the mouths to feed. By the time they get there, China would have taken over the island, finished conducting a sham election, and set up a puppet "autonomous" local government.
@@danielch6662 I think part of the point of the operation in the first place, show what can be done or not done.
Egypt and Israel won't let them use the crossing. Plus Israel has already started it's incursion into southern Gaza, so any aid transferred over land would have to drive through a warzone, across Israeli lines to deliver aid. If it even gets that far without being held up by IDF.
Yes it might cost more, but it allows Americans to say they are delivering aid, and give the responsibility of distribution to native Gazans/the few NGOs still in Gaza.
@@hayleyxyzyep, it bypasses israels blockade on aid.
I dunno, Sal. The Israeli government and military have been dragging their feet on permitting humanitarian aid to Gaza since the opening weeks of the war. Maybe the US authorities have decided that using Ashdod as a port of entry for humanitarian aid just comes with too many bureaucratic strings attached. Do we know any details of what restrictions, if any, the Israeli government and/or military have put on the US use of Ashdod?
The Israeli government has been telling their people that the Palestinians will be shipped to Europe and America. That is what this pier is for.
In addition to the potential "too many bureaucratic strings attached" factor (for offloading in Ashdod). there's *also* the matter of then trucking the aid by road to any land entry point into Gaza that Israel deigns to make available. As Israeli extremists have long demonstrated, they are all too ready to block the roads/entry points whenever and wherever they choose - with the IDF and Israeli police looking on and rarely (if ever) lifting a finger to prevent/remove them.
I think one thing that would have helped this video is simply stating that internal Israeli politics on top of the security requirements imposed by the IDF are the reason goods are not flowing overland from Israel's (or Egypt's) ports. It has become politically unacceptable to do nothing in the U.S., but it is politically unacceptable to Likud and their coalition to allow anything that possibly increases risk.
On another note, hopefully this situation emphasizes our weaknesses to the Pentagon wrt logistics in much the same way that the aid to Ukraine (and the ammunition consumption - why is artillery ammunition consumption ALWAYS A SURPRISE?) was a kick in the pants for our defense industrial base.
@RichardHuffman Artillery ammunition consumption in Ukraine is a shock to US/NATO because they are used to fighting one bare foot, third world, non-white country in a pack. The US military industrial complex is used to making expensive, complicated weapons systems that maximizes profits and shareholder value at the expense of the weapon's utility and serviceability. The Russians have a completely different approach informed by the number of times the land has been invaded.
The American MIC is great for achieving results for the owners and the politicians it bribes on a regular basis but the wake up call was the Russian victory over the US in Syria.
If military logistics was a subject taught at West Point then Project Ukraine would have never been entertained by anyone.
Yeah Sal is really killing me here. Him saying that it seems like no one in the US gov is listening to the logical advice of trucking the aid is makes him seem either really naive or strait up propaganda.
I said the same about the politics/IDF, however your response is more diplomatic. 🍀
He used to in previous videos mention such things
"...it is politically unacceptable to Likud and their coalition to allow anything that possibly increases risk [to Israel/the IDF]."
So, to which Israelis WOULD this be "acceptable"?

Yeah like who's gonna prevent the whole country from being stolen by settler colonials from Europe?...oh wait!
Regardless, sending any aid at all to Gaza is stupid,
They don't care, they just want to say they did something.
Who would steal it? Humanitarian aid tends to be bulky, so it would be difficult to smuggle out. The only people who could really do that would be the IDF invasion force. Any profit would be pocket change to the IDF. Maybe the IDF steals the aid as part of their plan to kill Palestine with mass starvation. Because that is why the aid delivery is a cluster - the State of Israel won't let Palestinians import food, water, fuel, et cetera...
Hi Sal, congratulations on 50 million. I think I found your channel originally when the Suez was blocked but only watched for a bit. Then I visited the lock system in Illinois along the Mississippi and saw a notification about potential issue in the Great Lakes due to strikes up in Canada. Being from the Chicago area I tried the Tribune because I figured there would be an economic impact - there was barely any reporting. I found your channel again and got true information. When the Baltimore bridge collapsed I knew where to go and I finally subscribed - I’ve been fascinated ever since and following along as you post. Shipping and trade really does make the world go around and has historical and current world impacts most people don’t consider. Please keep up the good work.
Nitpicking aside: Ashdod is pronounced so that “dod” rhymes with the word “ode”- long O sound. I also grew up on Long Island so I know it doesn’t come naturally to us to say it that way.
I also found this channel when the ship got stuck in the Suez. I didn't subscribe then, but the videos were so memorably good, I watched a few more. Then when I saw the channel coming up about the Baltimore bridge, I knew this was the place to go. So good, I had to subscribe, even though I wasn't very interested in shipping. I'm much more interested now, after watching a whole bunch more videos! Sometimes it's good to learn about things I'll never get to do in real life.
Years ago B.C. (Before Children), my husband and I took a boat tour on the Intercostal to the port of Miami, Florida. I remember people oohing and aahing over the celebrity homes of people like Oprah and Gloria Estefan as we passed by. What I found amazing was the actual working port with the giant magnetic cranes seamlessly lifting containers off ships and on to rail cars. It was fascinating and not part of my day to day experience but incredible to see how goods get transferred and end up on our grocery shelves (assuming that a lot of what was coming up was produce from Central and South America). Watching this channel I’m learning much more than I ever thought I’d be interested in about naval and other military sea operations., which is a good thing. Sal is making a lot of complex information make sense including how shipping and world politics come together and has impacts in ways not necessarily immediately obvious. Every video I’m gaining new insights.

Certainly, it’s a massive logistical effort to get aid in to Gaza, which doesn’t seem to get in easily by other routes. The irony is that the US aid to Israel is partially what made this necessary! As others comment below: it’s politics.

I know Sal only looks at the sea side of this, but there are many questions that cast doubt if this will work:
1. Israel issued evacuation notices in Rafah with the “safe area” being the coastal side of Khan Younis. If this pier anchors there, will a 1000 contract mercenaries be enough to prevent 1-2milluon starving Gazans from storming & boarding ships?
1b. How coincidental is the timing of this Pier to Israel’s Rafah invasion? Does this further expose the US for complicity in the IDF actions?
2. Who will do the last-mile distribution of the aid from the pier to the individuals & households in Gaza? Is there still enough fuel in Gaza for this?
3. What will be the rules of engagement for ships & mercenaries if they come under fire (from Hamas &/ the IDF)?? And if the starving population or last-mile distributors comes under fire from the IDF?
Great questions, I'm sure we will only get the answers after it goes terribly wrong. This is what happens when feelings take charge over reality in politics
Just remember this is the administration that pulled out of Afghanistan without a plan.
So don't expect much.
1. Depends on the ROE. If they can shoot real bullets, yes.
1b. This has been in train for a long time before Israel struck Rafah, so there is no "coincidental timing".
2. Sal suggests "Gaza" will provide security, so if this imaginary "Gaza" can provide imaginary security I guess it can provide imaginary distribution as well. As to fuel, why would the supplies be delivered to Gaza without including fuel?
3. LOL! See answer #1.
I agree, Sal is looking from the "sea side" only (no offence Sal ❤), the whole picture is much more complex for sure. Maybe it's just a test case for this scenario, maybe it's just to trying to show the weakness to get more money from the government, maybe there are some political/bureaucratic issues to be avoided, maybe ...

What is the exercise value of this operation? You say that it’s not a very effective way to bring aid to Gaza, but what about the value for the navy and army to exercise a capability that you don’t often use operationally?
I thought they were doing it this way because other than air drops, it's the only way to get aid actually to Gaza, rather than it being stopped at the entries to Gaza while the people in Gaza literally starve to death?

Here we are 80 years later, and this pier operation is almost pre WW1 and, as you remark, is still a very inefficient means of getting the aid to where it is needed.

If Gaza had an actual deep water facility the USA would use that. But Gaza doesn't. So the USA is using this method which offloads directly into Gaza.

Sal appreciate your comments and you are right on. This is not the way to do it. Unfortunately, there are no more LSTs left in the American fleet. The LSTs with a key to D-Day in WWII and we contributed heavily in the Vietnam conflict as well.
This verges on the daftest idea I have ever seen concerning a logistics solution. This was created by a committee of politicians and military personnel who did not have the most basic understanding of commercial shipping activities. It is essential to consider efficient cargo flow, the minimisation of transport movements, optimal connectivity, and, most importantly, in this instance, recognise the vulnerabilities associated with loosely secured facilities offshore that would be inoperable in anything but the mildest weather and sea conditions. Sal is spot on, saying the most practical solution would be to let the Gaza cargo flow unhindered through the port of Ashdod, just 20 or 30 kilometres up the coast.
The sad part is that I don't think they want any aid getting into gaza while still saving some face.
The pronoun game isn't an effective way to convey your ideas.
