He was Haitian and his mother from Puerto RICO. HE HAS 2 sisters. He was born in Brooklyn . He broke into the art world which was mostly white at that time, it made him self conscious . His best friend Al was PR and they were in a band called Grey. They played CBGB and the Mud club.He was hit by a car when he was seven, his mother gave him the book Greys Anatomy, which is why he named his band Grey and also used skeletal figures in his paintings. He is part of the 27 club of artists who died at that age.

It's such a goddamn shame how meatheads like 50¢ reduce Basquiat's legacy to what he did in his bedroom, when all the firsts he was able to achieve as a Black man in an exclusionary 80s art world should be the focus of conversation. Plus, he wasn't gay, he was bisexual (he dated Madonna, for Pete's sake)---not that it even matters if he was gay or bisexual; I just mention this to say at least get your information right if you're going to bring up his sexuality at all, instead of just mindlessly regurgitating what some famous homophobic rapper excretes from his mouth sphincter.

In the East Village, on Bleecker and Bowery, was CBGB, which was home to Television, Patti Smith and many of the bands that also played at Max’s Kansas City, where Debbie worked. Little temporary art galleries were opening and closing every week in the East Village. Everyone knew each other by sight-not so much by name, but we all knew Andy. In the early-to-mid 80s we hung at the Mud Club, Danceteria, Spitz and Club Mod (the last to were illegal underground ops :) No one knew anyone would become famous. Jean and I got busted at Park & 8th, but the cops were getting so many calls, they just took our stashes and un cuffed us. The area was violent. I mean Clockwork-Orange violent. I’m in touch with a few who still survive, and some that still thrive.

Wtf does Jay z gotta do with Jean Michel , jay z wishes he was him bro . He tries to copy Jean Michel style and swears he’s just like him . what’s keeping Jean Michel basquiat name alive is his Art ! and what he left behind towards the people and his family . A lot of the people don’t understand that he used Art to express his pain and misunderstanding towards the people especially the media . people weren’t fw him when he and Andy Warhol were making a major impact in Painting back in the 80’s . and those that were supporting him and buying his paintings showed love to him . he even help others make believe in themselves based on their talent if he as a Hispanic/ black artist can do it so can they that’s what was important about him and that’s his talent .

Basquiat became famous in the 80s because he "hung out" with, and was "close friends" with Andy Warhol. That is what made him popular and his artwork famous. Now his art is interesting, but aesthetic taste vary. There are a few pieces I like, like the dead horse figure right before he died. But to those familiar with fine arts, he was very famous in the 80s as a cultural figure in NYC art worlds.

For everyone saying in the comments it looks like a child could do what he did please dont even bother commenting. You dont understand expression, how he took everything he felt truly in his soul essence found a way to create it in ways SOME people would understand and look at and go yeah i see it i get it i feel it i like it. Most true artist dont see the true value in their art that other people do true artist will never truly complete anything we see as a masterpiece but they see as unfinished not fully completed not quite there yet. True artist express their soul in a physical way so others can view it and they see the value that the artist doesn't. So for the people who dont even know art how are you gonna know it when you see it? You expressed yourself created and formed and had the ability to show others this is how i feel im just showing you in a different way maybe youll see what i see and maybe youll see what you see. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
