I read this story for a creative writing class and, beyond being well made, an odd thing is how some people seemed surprised by the allegory, especially in an urban environment where we are actually confronted by homelessness and inequality. Maybe I was just around privileged people, but in any case the end of this story is very powerful. That at any moment we can choose to walk away and, though certainly we’ll face difficulty, forge a path towards a better society/place/whatever. Whether that be somewhere that focuses on rights utilitarianism or Kantian ethics, the point stands that we can still choose that path.
