    The Army Camp trailer just went to the next level with a draw bar extension and spare tire mount on the front! By extending the draw bar not only do we get more room to mount stuff it also adds weight on the tow ball aswell as much better handling and backing capability's! Let me know what you think in the comments below, Cheers for watching legends!

    Just a hint for welding same diameter tube is tack a piece of angle iron to either end of your clamp and it can only pull in straight saves mucking around with different angle finders and spirit levels. Alternatively tack the angle to each tube and slide them together

    Looks mint!! only thing I can possibly see is someway of stopping sideways movement of the spare - it's only sitting on a point (the drawbar) and could wobble side to side cracking the welds? you've gusseted the mount at the bottom for front to back movement, but nothing for side to side.

    Those ex-army trailers are damn heavy too so adding a decent sized water tank can make things worse. An idea - use 80 -100MM water pipe and make a tank that sits on the bed of the trailer. My calcs show that 80MM pipe arranged in 8 X 1metre segments will give you 40 litres. 100MM pipe in 8 X 1 metre will give ytou 62 litres and they fit anywhere using 90 degree elbows to put the tanks where you want.

      Okay thanks mate I’ll add a few more braces maybe too? What’s your thoughts on some more steel welded on top and bottom?

    • @SHOCKcustoms
      @SHOCKcustoms 2 года назад

      @@RoamLyfe have a quick squiz on how chassis extensions are done on chopped and stretched cruisers, pootrols etc. Dmw have a great channel showing the plug weld setup - the length of your sleeve determines how many plugs u can get in. Slot cuts in the draw tube (bar) can be plug welded in an elongated style. A considerably long inner sleeve is key - remember you are relying on pulling all that weight and flex offroad and on road so circumference welds and minor plugs might need an upgrade. Have a review of matts offroad recovery channel and how they plug weld and elongated void weld to build their chassis and do their 4bee mods. Are u fitting trailer brakes bro? Awesome efforts thus far man 👍 dropping in a triangulated vertical gusset will stop any draw bar flex. Ie long back to back triangles welded in 1.5 inch runs, gap, 1.5 inch weld etc etc. Dont fully weld it. Leave gaps to prevent cracking

    Looking mint, been following the build since the beginning 👌🏻 I would definitely be making those gussets larger, at least at the 90 deg section - far too small as is. If you do go larger, make sure you chamfer the sharp corners to reduce the stress. Also the horizontal box section would’ve been better sitting on top of the vertical box section, not in front. I’d recommend adding some flat bar perpendicular to the drawbar connecting the new box section. Do this where the tyre mount is and you then have a flat, larger and stronger surface to join to plus you’re strengthening the draw bar. Think of the constant vibrations running through the trailer, esp off-road, a very heavy tyre upright with little to no side strength plus a fairly small mount - I don’t think it would hold up for many trips, just some friendly thoughts 👍🏻 I design cranes for a living so have some fair experience with over engineering haha

  • @benmcatee2751
    @benmcatee2751 2 года назад +1

    Looks sick, but few thoughts, that's a fairly worn 33, is there a gap to fit a brand new tyre? And some side bracing may be necessary for the spare wheel holder. As others said, having it laid down would've probs been the better choice but it's your build so who cares 🤙

    • @RoamLyfe
      @RoamLyfe  2 года назад

      I did leave about a 10mm gap and figured can always air down to fit a tyre onto it!

    My trailer has 15" spare with just an LT rated tyre - half the weight of yours but the steel mount is 50x50x 3mm, shorter and supported in the A frame in both forward/back and side to side. I reckon you've undercooked the spare wheel carrier (IMHO). At least brace it side to side to the A frame sections and give its upright a rib. Maybe if it fits, lay the spare flat? if you don't have the A Frame lenght, maybe raise the jerry holder and fit it under that? Just some thoughts.

    I commented somewhere else about maybe laying the spare flat, does it stick above your ute tray creating extra drag?

    But wouldn't the long bar without the 30° angles be good, in that you can jacknife the trailer at the campsite, to access everything in the trailer & rear of car?

    • @RoamLyfe
      @RoamLyfe  2 года назад

      Apparently these trailers are notorious for towing issues due to draw bar lengths!

      @@RoamLyfe as a truckie, with over 30 years experience, l can say the longer the drawbar, the more stable at high speed. Load distribution also does play a part.

    Why not lay the tyre down in the drawbar instead of having standing?
    Looks cool but personally i thing laying down might looked better.. my 2 cents.

    Trailer actually makes me consider making one for myself when before seeing you did it I never even considered it. Only thing I’d say is the 33 leaning back a little bit would look better and even maybe a bit safer? Harder to fall off if the bolts failed?

    • @RoamLyfe
      @RoamLyfe  2 года назад

      Yeah I kinda agree mate I think angled back will be the go!!

    I know nothing about welding. But do you think the spare wheel mount is strong enough? It's only welded on the bottom, then has a Hugh wheel hanging off it. ?

    • @RoamLyfe
      @RoamLyfe  2 года назад

      I don’t think it’ll be an issue personally but I’m not 100 percent! If I think about a tac weld alone it’s strong enough to take a large hit from my big hammer, the force behind that would be alot more than the wheel bouncing!!

  • @chrisduckworth2022
