The Addams Family started as a single-frame newspaper comic satirizing the stereotypical 1950's nuclear family. The joke wasn't that they were weird. It's that they were weird, didn't notice, and were *perfectly* happy with it! While shows like 'The Honeymooners' had another plot of "Oh, there's goes my big dumb husband, being an idiot but I love him and who knows if I could do any better", The Addams's were functional, loving, and pretty much everything we associate now with a loving family. They just also happen to be into some *disturbing* shit.
What's cool is that the movie uses some shots directly from the comic, such as the pouring oil over christmas carolers at the start :) They made Gomez hotter (though Raul is still the perfect Gomez :) ) but they really kept the spirit of it :)
The show was also unique in that that was never any doubt that Gomez and Morticia had sex. On The Munsters, Herman would kiss Lily on the cheek while Gomez was all over Morticia. It was also a multicultural, multi-ethnic family which was wild for anyone not named Lucille Ball.
I would say that the joke was they were a 'normal' family despite not having normal tastes, that they're strangely relatable. Also, Morticia and Gomez are relationship goals, front and center.
More amazing is that she had a terribe time with it. The costume was so uncomfortable she burned it after filming and the light on her eyes was near blinding. She was a real trooper.
Hey, Addams Family Values should definitely watched next. It's a rare instance of the sequel being better than the original. Sorta like how these two movies are actually better than the original, classic TV series. Also, Addams Family Values is where Wednesday really gets to shine, and made her such a really beloved character. Christina Ricci (Ms. Thornhill on Wednesday) did such a great job, really paved the way for Jenna Ortega to make the character her own.
@@reikun86 funniest movie villain of the '90s. Funniest part is, with their macabre outlook, they still accepted her. It's just too bad we don't see Joan Cusack anymore really. Not in anything notable. I miss her as a comedy actress. She did have a role a few years back in an Amy Schumer movie (I know everyone hates Amy Schumer, but her movies are funny), playing the so-called "platonic" friend of Wanda Sykes' character, but had no dialogue because her character had cut out her tongue when she was in the military.
What's so powerful about the Addams Family is that the Addams are not just out of the ordinary, they specifically go against so many of the conventions surrounding family life and decency, and they're freaky weirdo monster people, but they're so open, accepting, and supportive of absolutely everyone. They're functional and loving.
Funnest fact about this movie - the original script had Gordon *not* actually be Fester, just someone that gelled well with the family, and was welcomed into it by the end. Christopher Lloyd, Fester's actor, was perfectly fine with it, but the other cast members desperately wanted it changed so badly that they picked Christina Ricci (Wednesday) to talk to the Director about it!
Pugsley doesn't get enough love (even from me) but I appreciate him more and more in these movies. He is always down for every crazy thing his family wants to do with a cute little smile on his face.
Mini rant: Christina Ricci's Wednesday Addams was the first character I saw, as a little girl, who I felt personally connected to. Up until then, I never felt as a 7 year old girl that I could relate and "see myself" as a character till I saw her. So this movie/ series means a great lot to me personally and probably too many other little girls who didn't or don't fit the classic female stereotypes that are expected of them. So glad she's finally getting the recognition she and the family deserve. You should definitely watch the second one! 🖤🖤🖤
I missed the premier so had to swing by and show mellow some love. Morticia and Gomez are couple goals. They are madly in love, are involved with their children and openly communicate with them and are honest, support them no matter what, and they always look fabulous. Part two I think they shine much more so you can see that. These films are my favorite adaptation of them. And I come from as far back as reading the newspaper comics. Also RIP Raoul Julia. He literally DEVOURED every bit of dialogue as Gomez.
Picking a favorite 90’s Addams Family movie is like trying to pick a favorite child. The first one has that great dark humor and every character gets equal screen time. The second though is so fun and campy. With a great villain!
I love the fact that the Addams family is supposed to be the opposite of the “normal” American family but in it you have a couple that is madly in love with each other, they care about their children so much and they value family over everything. Unlike “normal” American family’s
This movie is wonderful, the casting is the only Addams Family for so many people. And the truest most intense love between two people, ceaseless romance. It's so sad that Raul Julia had such an untimely death. The original Gomez Addams outlived him.
You definitely need to see the original TV show from the 60's. John Astin played the role of Gomez (the father) in "The Addams Family" tv show. His adoptive son Sean Austin (Duke) played Sam in "The Lord of the Rings".
Highly underrated movie and very 90s. Addams Family Values, the sequel, is considered even better by some. And it has Christina Ricci’s immortal line that I won’t spoil. You wouldn’t think MC Hammer would work for this, but it kind of does. Snoop Dogg is clearly the better rapper, but he doesn’t work so well for Addams Family. Maybe because I take him more seriously as an artist.
20:12 Best part is we probably don't even have to know the family that well to get invited. They're a very open and friendly family, no matter how 'odd' they find those around them.
9:58 - All throughout the 90s, people that saw this movie would say 'Bravo Pugsley!' every time something was dropped and made alot of noise. THIS was a meme before memes were a thing.
pt 2 is better imo....i think you'll love it...Also, the part where Gomez calls the Sally Jessy Raphael Show is also one of my favorite parts...he's so funny!
Mt parents were friends with the original Charles Addams when I was growing up. He was an extremely nice man who was everything you would hope he would be. For example, he gave pet tarantula to one of my brothers for Christmas one year. Anyway, though he died before this film came out I have no doubt he would have been very pleased. The makers of the film 'got it'.
Raul Julia is an incredible Puerto Rican actor who sadly passed too soon, although his role as M.Bison in the Street Fighter film wasn't his best. As for Angelica Houston she played Morticia so perfectly. No diss to the original actress who was also a hot fox.
Number two is great also. I am tossed which I like better. I never realized the main girl in the 2nd one was a girl scout in the first! Lol that makes number two even better! On a completely different genre I bet you would like the movie Big Fish. Another great one that is confusing is Life of Pie! A bit more serious of a story. The way they tell it is new and uncommon.
Here's the reason why The Addams Family are so incredibly wealthy. Gomez is not only a descendant of Castellan royalty. But he is also a successful business man who is well invested in Wall Street. He has ties to various businesses all around the world including a tombstone factory, salt and uranium mines and exotic animal farms
I love how attracted you were to Morticia. Anjelica was a goddess in this role, she killed it in every way. Raul Julia as Gomez was flawless as well. We will never get another pair like them again judging by their counterparts in Wednesday.
This was so fun! The Addams Family films were my childhood. Wednesday was definitely my favorite. As a 90s kid (80s baby), I wanted to be Christina Ricci. Highly recommend reacting to the sequel. Values (2nd) is my favorite. Wednesday's monolog during the camp play is brilliant. I had it memorized.
"We gladly feast upon those who would subdue us" If I recall correctly, this is meant to be a metaphor for what the Addams family as a whole (and through their entire existence) are supposed to be like. It is also Morticia making a thinly veiled threat as a result.
Adams Family Values is my favorite for Wednesday's growth, Joan Cusack as Debbie, and more of Morticia and Gomez antics. It's both a summer and a Thanksgiving movie. 😁
When Morticia was reading fairy tales to the little kids and telling how terrible it was from the witch's perspective that was actually something from the original series. When the school board decided that the Addams children needed to attend school, and Wednesday came home in tears because of the terribly scary tales they told about killing harmless and innocent witches and dragons... So, Morticia wrote a new book of fairy tales where the witches and dragons killed the naughty children and mean knights.
The guy, Raul Julia, who plays Gomez is also the guy who plays Bison in Street Fighter. He was an absolute genius imo. He even made Street Fighter a fun watch. The energy he brings is just on another level and almost completely unique in showbiz. May he rest in peace.
If you look at the Addams' relationships, you can see how amazingly wonderful their relationships are. Loving, compassionate, loyal, they support eachother, the parents teach the kids... I mean... if you ignore the murderizing, and boiling in oil, lol.
I love watching people reacting to the Addams Family. the look of confusion every 3 seconds! Just when they have these people figured out, something happens and they're confused even more.🤣🤣
When Gomez jumped through the window, you said he came in like Zorro. Raul Julia was one of the actors up for Anthony Hopkins's part as Zorro, in The Mask of Zorro.
I seriously wish someone (anymore) but especially you Mel, would watch Curse of the Golden Flower. It's one of my top 5 all-time favorite films! It's so insanely good. The story, the acting, the characters, the set and costume designs, the multiple crazy twists... Everything about it is perfect. Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat are phenomenal in that movie.
Love how you edited yourself into scenes! Morticia and Gomez are so wonderful together. The lighting they do on her eyes references the 'mysterious femme fatale' character from early movies.
The Addams family are semi supernatural. And I think you may have gotten an even bigger kick out of the "Wednesday" Netflix series if you had seen the movies first IMO.
The lighting on the eyes is something they did in older films, especially black and white films on vampires. Made them look ethereal. Morticia's look is inspired by that sort of thing, and Elvira Mistress of the Dark. So they do the lighting thing on her. And it slays.
That is ironic that you should mention Zorro - and i immediately thought that it is a shame that they never got Raul Julia to actually play Zorro, cuz now, i can see him as doing it PERFECTLY
Yes please watch Addams family values!! It's so fn funny! The new additions to the movie are excellent and yes Christina just shines as the main focus of the movie.. amazing and I agree it's better than the first but so said to know Raul was very sick during the filming but he still did an outstanding job as Gomez
I definitely love Addams Family Values better than the first, though I truly love both movies. Morticia is my favorite character, but not by much as I love all the Addams' with all my heart. she is just a vision and I love how she is so understated in everything she does, yet in control always. excited for you to watch Addams Family Values; you'll enjoy it because there is a lot more Wednesday material and a lot more humor. ❤
This one, and Addams Family Values are the best in my book. Raul Julia played Gomez with such deranged glee. And I loved the rest of the cast. My husband and I agree, we want a love like Gomez and Morticia.
So the Addams Family was a newspaper comic originally. There it explained how they came into their money, according to the author. Are you ready for this? The reason the Addams have so much money is: "they made a killing in the stock market". Yeah. They're rich because it's of a macabre pun.
Nice reaction. These movies were such a great follow up from the comic and tv series. Wednesday is my favorite character by far, but this entire cast was great.
I like the 1st movie the most. I always love mortica and Wednesday growing up, I always wanted a relationship like gomez and mortica their chemistry is fire.
I've always liked the Addams Family. The new Netflix series Wednesday, is the best I've seen so far. I don't know all the new actors names. But they were great!
Awesome reaction dude. The jokes in this movie land, hard. Also RIP M. Bison. RJ was one of my favorite actors. Definitely do street fighter if you haven’t already dude, thanks.
While I'm very fond of this version, the sequel is my heart's true love. As incentive to watch it, you'll get a lot more Wednesday, not to mention Joan Cusack. I hope you'll try it out!
The Addams family fortune started as wealth collected (stolen) by one of their pirate ancestors, but buy and large the majority of their fortune comes from Gomez. Gomez Addams is one of the top ten wealthiest fictional characters of all time, comparable to Bruce Wayne and Scrooge McDuck. He’s a genius investor and buys stocks in things that have no business turning a profit, yet he turns them to gold. He once bought a swamp that no one wanted and discovered an untapped oil reservoir. He owns a crocodile farm he named Crocodiles Unlimited. He may seem silly and flamboyant, but when it comes to finance he’s incredibly sharp.
3:55 from what i've heard, the reason the Addams are so rich is because Gomez has purchased stock from so many resources he doesn't even know how many companies he owns. he's practically never lifted a finger for actual work, as he lets all these other companies do their thing, and he reaps some rewards due to being a stockholder
6:12 ya know what.... I don’t care if the Original Adam’s family creator hates all other attempts except his own show, this movie is so damn good and so is the sequel!!!!!
The Addams Family and The Munsters very two very similar shows that aired on TV around the same time, I like both of them. I remember both of them being shown in B/W
The first movie is good for setting up the family dynamic and letting us get to know the characters. Addams Family Values though is the clear cut better movie though. Wednesday absolutely steals the show in the second movie.
31:10 “three legs???” Considering the weirdness and wackiness of the family and all he extended family seen at the party…the implication is more towards a TAIL… Still, one reactor immediately jumped to the conclusion of “how do they know it will be a boy” 😂😂😂
In hindsight, I think the original TV series had Morticia and Gomez about as close to doing it on the screen as you could get back when it was made. I've seen one or two writeups mention that they seemed to be the only sitcom family that would be able to have children, what with their interest in the prerequisite ...
I honestly love both movies, but I do favor the second one more! You will definitely see where the Netflix Wednesday series got their inspiration from when you watch Addams family two! Christina Ricci is EVERYTHING! Great reaction!
Part two is definitely worth watching!
Its one of the few sequels that surpass the original.
Absolutely
YES! The sequel manages to keep everything you love about the first movie, and dial it up to 11! :)
Yes!

Well wouldn’t it be 1930s since the comics first debuted in 1938
The show was also unique in that that was never any doubt that Gomez and Morticia had sex. On The Munsters, Herman would kiss Lily on the cheek while Gomez was all over Morticia. It was also a multicultural, multi-ethnic family which was wild for anyone not named Lucille Ball.

Addams Family is hysterical! I also really enjoy the second movie
Great laugh-along reaction!
The first movie is good for setting up the family dynamic and letting us get to know the characters. Addams Family Values though is the clear cut better movie though. Wednesday absolutely steals the show in the second movie.
There IS a TV show of the Addams family, but it's from the 60s. It's actually pretty good!
I watched the whole 60s show last year.
Yeeesss. Now you HAVE to watch Addams Family Values. My favorite 😁
31:10 “three legs???”
Considering the weirdness and wackiness of the family and all he extended family seen at the party…the implication is more towards a TAIL…
Still, one reactor immediately jumped to the conclusion of “how do they know it will be a boy”
😂😂😂
In hindsight, I think the original TV series had Morticia and Gomez about as close to doing it on the screen as you could get back when it was made. I've seen one or two writeups mention that they seemed to be the only sitcom family that would be able to have children, what with their interest in the prerequisite ...
I honestly love both movies, but I do favor the second one more! You will definitely see where the Netflix Wednesday series got their inspiration from when you watch Addams family two! Christina Ricci is EVERYTHING! Great reaction!
Interesting bit of trivia....the man in the toy train Gomez is laughing at through the train window was the director of the film!
