I think specifically how it works is that advanced courses (honors, AP, IB) are weighted more heavily than regular courses. So you can only have an unweighted gpa up to 4.0 but if you take hard courses than your weighted GPA can be higher than a 4.0, up to a 5, like you said. This is why I deleted TikTok about 2 years ago. There is horrible videos going around on that app, rather it’s trying to killing animals, weird sexual content, or just an over load of depressing videos. It’s not good for people’s mental health and it was designed to be addictive. I’m glad I’ve gotten rid of it.

I’ve never wanted to go to college, but my parents want me to so badly. But it takes so much time and so much money out of my pockets. I live in the us and the pressure to go to a big school is outrageous.I also don’t wanna spend majority of my life in school.
Totally unsolicited but State schools or community colleges are a good way to pay less, get your education + make connections and get out of there! If you really want to go to a big school you can always transfer later or if you change your mind and decide to go to grad school, more scholarships or stipends are available to grad students, one huge thing that many people overlook is that a lot of top schools offer free lectures or online videos and work the only thing you wouldn't get is the diploma, if you have no interest in college, trade school is also a great path! Oh! If you're still in hs you can also get college credits through dual enrollment and shorten the time you would go to college because you've completed the credits early, everyone is always going to have something to say but Ik a decent number of people who are happier just working or going to a 90% acceptance rate school then those that go to prestigious ones (and ik lots of students at prestigious schools), at the end of the day most of these people end up in similar jobs if they put in the effort
I didn’t wanna go either because of debt and how expensive it is so I made a deal with my parents. I would go if they would pay for it. They accepted the deal on the grounds that I attend a community college. While I understand I am very fortunate for them paying for my schooling, I wouldn’t have gone to college had it not been for them and our agreement.
So many people are going to college now that there’s a need for people educated in trades. Trade school is a great way to get a good job and not be $100k in debt!!
community college is good for all those things! two years instead of four, usually pretty small class sizes, cheaper, more flexible scheduling, and the option to transfer to a 4-year if you decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree!

I know this is an old comment but like just don't worry about this stuff, seriously, you can re-apply to schools. It's also not as big of a deal as you might be thinking to get into a "really good school". Because of selection bias I've seen way more kids online thinking about applying to Harvard than I would've ever met in real life. Realistically, those kids are like 0.2% of the US population and you can carve out a perfectly great life for yourself anywhere else. Feel free to look into all the celebrities, or anyone you idolize in general, who went to normal ass schools. Sometimes schools just decide theyve accepted enough people and you gotta go somewhere else or wait to re-apply. I have a strong dislike for the perfectionist culture that makes kids super fking stressed about this stuff Edit: The only downside to re-applying to a school is that there's probably an application fee. They're not usually very much (25$-50$?) but it's still a thing. You can get them waived in certain circumstances.
schools like ivy leagues also prioritize legacy students, meaning they usually will consider accepting you if a family member or yours is an alumni of that school! or that one scandal where a girl was accepted into harvard despite not reaching the "requirements" because her parents donated a bunch of money to them so they could accept her.
Probably an Ivy League which is still possible to get into, but they can see through BS and checklist mentality. I’ve known people who’ve done similar things and more and get rejected because they did it to look like they did more instead of choosing something they are passionate about and that will have an IMPACT. Like people have started useless nonprofits that die after they graduate high school that have no real impact but the whole time they could’ve been volunteering or some other project that they care about. Of course GPA and stats are definitely part of the pie, but they aren’t everything that’s considered. So don’t feel discouraged and do what you are sincerely interested in to be able to present.

a lot of schools in the US are on a 4 point scale. if you do AP classes (college level classes) and do well then they can bring your GPA above a 4 even though a 4.0 is the "highest" - basically a 4.6 means he did a bunch of college classes and did well in them while in high school

I’m not ben, but I empathize with your situation. ur mom might come around but I don’t know her, parents and adults in general can have a lot of preconceived notions about mental illness and will say your making “excuses”, “it’s not real”, “you aren’t troubled”, “everyone is a little adhd sometimes!”, but that line of thinking is flawed. Idk where you live but in America if you are diagnosed then you can have what’s called a 504 plan with accommodations to help you in school. Things like extended time on tests and stuff. And by law they have to acknowledge it and abide by its rules or the teacher can get fired. Maybe if you have a nice supportive teacher or counselor at school you can talk to them about ur possible adhd? In school if you’re having trouble paying attention, I’ve heard that fidgeting with a quiet fidget toy discreetly might help. I’m not an expert though so I recommend watching RUclips channels like How to ADHD, Jessica is really nice and she knows what she’s talking about. But in general my rule of thumb when getting advice for certain things is to look at a large “sample sizs” of advice to see the general consensus and then go from there, but that’s just a me thing because it helps me feel like I’m not just going with one biased source ESPECIALLY online where misinformation is everywhere 💀💀 and if ur struggling to get homework done on time, so am I lol ur not alone, but maybe linking it to something your interested in can help. Like a show or movie or game. There’s this podcast on Spotify called “Happily neurodivergent” that has an episode about it. It’s called “intergrating special interests” which was made with autistic individuals in mind I believe but it could still help. Another channel I like for self help is Elizabeth Filips. Her advice is less rigid and feels a lot more doable compared to others on yt with a heavy #riseandgrind mindset. I think that covers it? But yeah, all the best dude I’m rooting for u. A lot of it is because university is a luxury a lot of Americans will never be able to afford. The really good schools will do scholarships that are strictly income based, which often times means that getting into one of those schools is a kids best shot at getting an education, often times too when these kids who otherwise would not have the money to go to college are going through grade school, they and their families spend over a decade making massive sacrifices in hopes of it working out, the odds of which are low if you’re lower income

Some schools just add the additional points from things like AP, dual enrollment, honors classes. You still have an unweighted but colleges also allow you to submit the weighted. This was the only way for my school to actually get a valedictorian because too many kids got 4.0s

To explain the GPA thing, you can take classes that raise your GPA higher than 4.0 weighted. AP and college prep classes are a good example. But unweighted, your GPA cannot go past 4.0 I had a 3.7 unweighted and chose to go to community college to avoid the pressure of selection by prestige and dropped out anyways 😂 dodged a bullet there.
In the us (i think it's the same in the whole country) our gpa goes up to 4, however if you take honors, ap, or you're in ib (ik most schools don't have this program it's International Baccalaureate) you can get pass 4.0 and go up to 5, since this is a thing my school have like 30+ every year graduating with a 5.0 which is the absolute max you can get

Ben I’ve got drama, so I have a best friend of like 8 years, now our sisters are also best friends, but recently they had an argument, they made up eventually but they don’t talk anymore. I know this is an old comment but like just don't worry about this stuff, seriously, you can re-apply to schools. It's also not as big of a deal as you might be thinking to get into a "really good school". Because of selection bias I've seen way more kids online thinking about applying to Harvard than I would've ever met in real life. Realistically, those kids are like 0.2% of the US population and you can carve out a perfectly great life for yourself anywhere else. Feel free to look into all the celebrities, or anyone you idolize in general, who went to normal ass schools. Sometimes schools just decide theyve accepted enough people and you gotta go somewhere else or wait to re-apply. I have a strong dislike for the perfectionist culture that makes kids super fking stressed about this stuff
Edit: The only downside to re-applying to a school is that there's probably an application fee. They're not usually very much (25$-50$?) but it's still a thing. You can get them waived in certain circumstances.

If it was Ivy League or another top school, they also have an interview, so he may have sounded good on paper but not in the interview
schools like ivy leagues also prioritize legacy students, meaning they usually will consider accepting you if a family member or yours is an alumni of that school! or that one scandal where a girl was accepted into harvard despite not reaching the "requirements" because her parents donated a bunch of money to them so they could accept her.
Probably an Ivy League which is still possible to get into, but they can see through BS and checklist mentality. I’ve known people who’ve done similar things and more and get rejected because they did it to look like they did more instead of choosing something they are passionate about and that will have an IMPACT. Like people have started useless nonprofits that die after they graduate high school that have no real impact but the whole time they could’ve been volunteering or some other project that they care about. Of course GPA and stats are definitely part of the pie, but they aren’t everything that’s considered. So don’t feel discouraged and do what you are sincerely interested in to be able to present.
4.6 is basically just insanely good at school because it’s like extra credit and stuff

a lot of schools in the US are on a 4 point scale. if you do AP classes (college level classes) and do well then they can bring your GPA above a 4 even though a 4.0 is the "highest" - basically a 4.6 means he did a bunch of college classes and did well in them while in high school

I’m not ben, but I empathize with your situation. ur mom might come around but I don’t know her, parents and adults in general can have a lot of preconceived notions about mental illness and will say your making “excuses”, “it’s not real”, “you aren’t troubled”, “everyone is a little adhd sometimes!”, but that line of thinking is flawed. Idk where you live but in America if you are diagnosed then you can have what’s called a 504 plan with accommodations to help you in school. Things like extended time on tests and stuff. And by law they have to acknowledge it and abide by its rules or the teacher can get fired. Maybe if you have a nice supportive teacher or counselor at school you can talk to them about ur possible adhd? In school if you’re having trouble paying attention, I’ve heard that fidgeting with a quiet fidget toy discreetly might help. I’m not an expert though so I recommend watching RUclips channels like How to ADHD, Jessica is really nice and she knows what she’s talking about. But in general my rule of thumb when getting advice for certain things is to look at a large “sample sizs” of advice to see the general consensus and then go from there, but that’s just a me thing because it helps me feel like I’m not just going with one biased source ESPECIALLY online where misinformation is everywhere 💀💀 and if ur struggling to get homework done on time, so am I lol ur not alone, but maybe linking it to something your interested in can help. Like a show or movie or game. There’s this podcast on Spotify called “Happily neurodivergent” that has an episode about it. It’s called “intergrating special interests” which was made with autistic individuals in mind I believe but it could still help. Another channel I like for self help is Elizabeth Filips. Her advice is less rigid and feels a lot more doable compared to others on yt with a heavy #riseandgrind mindset. I think that covers it? But yeah, all the best dude I’m rooting for u. Slightly late, but drama: My father had recently passed as of May, and I told my friends the next day (M&F) and they both took it upon themselves to make it how they thought would "help me with coping". A lot of it is because university is a luxury a lot of Americans will never be able to afford. The really good schools will do scholarships that are strictly income based, which often times means that getting into one of those schools is a kids best shot at getting an education, often times too when these kids who otherwise would not have the money to go to college are going through grade school, they and their families spend over a decade making massive sacrifices in hopes of it working out, the odds of which are low if you’re lower income

Some schools just add the additional points from things like AP, dual enrollment, honors classes. You still have an unweighted but colleges also allow you to submit the weighted. This was the only way for my school to actually get a valedictorian because too many kids got 4.0s

To explain the GPA thing, you can take classes that raise your GPA higher than 4.0 weighted. AP and college prep classes are a good example. But unweighted, your GPA cannot go past 4.0
I had a 3.7 unweighted and chose to go to community college to avoid the pressure of selection by prestige and dropped out anyways 😂 dodged a bullet there.
In the us (i think it's the same in the whole country) our gpa goes up to 4, however if you take honors, ap, or you're in ib (ik most schools don't have this program it's International Baccalaureate) you can get pass 4.0 and go up to 5, since this is a thing my school have like 30+ every year graduating with a 5.0 which is the absolute max you can get

Ben I’ve got drama, so I have a best friend of like 8 years, now our sisters are also best friends, but recently they had an argument, they made up eventually but they don’t talk anymore. So, as you would guess it’s a bit awkward, especially since they show up to my badminton club every week. The last time I saw her (about 3 1/2 months ago) it was her birthday and she didn’t thank me for my gift or say bye or greet me ,etc. In the past she would always do this ( her mum thanked me tho ) So we go to the same school but she’s in another year group so I didn’t see her for a year because I moved up schools, eventually she caught up but she doesn’t ever talk to me in school, now I understand she might want to fit in and wants ti fond friends in her year, but there is NO need to ignore me completely, I hoped that it would disappear in half a year, it’s been about half a year now and she still dents talk to me , plus she always seems to get her friends messages but not mine (to be fair I don’t use WhatsApp and other apps like that) but still.
