I think sex scenes, like most things, are situational. If the show is about 30 year olds playing teenagers and the show has no plot, (Riverdale) it’s not needed. If sex or intimacy is a part of the characters development or growth I think it is meaningful to add it.
Arcane had a sex scene in it, but I think it was actually justified to show the two characters' relationship. I think it's also worth mentioning that the scene itself was heavily censored, inaudible, and intertwined with an unrelated scene. This is coming from an aspec person if it adds anything lol

if DONE WELL, sex scenes can be crucial to certain shows/movies. i think sex is a part of intimacy that can truly bond and connect people in a relationship (obviously it’s not the only part of a relationship that matters, but it is such an intimate and personal thing that builds trust and a sense of vulnerability so it can honestly be beautiful when a show/movie portrays it as something to that effect) and no i’m not talking about random unnecessary hookups that add absolutely zero depth to the character or plot to the story.
As an addition to this topic, if you were unaware (which is understandable) there are people who are genuinely disgusted by sex or just don't want ro have it, but still want romantic relationships. I'm Asexual myself, and I don't speak for everyone, but I skip sex scenes because they just make me uncomfortable. I don't think they should be removed entirely, they just make me slightly uncomfortable as someone who does not feel the desire for a relationship involving sex. Also, I don't intend to sound mean (if I do), I just wanted to let you know since I know there are other people who feel similar to me 👍‼️
Also I know you’re not saying this, but to add on, not all asexuals feel this way. Some asexual people have sex, some don’t. Some like the idea, just not the real deal. There are all kinds of people in the spectrum, and once again I know you didn’t imply any of this wasn’t true, but just bringing up another point!

I'm also a transgender male, and I was put into that same sort of situation by my extremely abusive household. They forced me into therapy, told my siblings against my will, and treated me worse then our dogs. When I spoke out about this behavior, they were extremely rude and it's honestly ridiculous how they acted.

I mostly have a problem with they do it when the characters are supposedly in high school, I’m not saying teenagers don’t do it but it just comes to a point where they seem to sexualize teenagers and generalize them and there has been so many with age gaps that it’s just uncomfortable and gross
I feel like shows such as Bridgeton do sex scenes very well because instead of just having it randomly, they have (most) of them to show intimacy and how the connection between people could get strong or be really rocky. But when shows and movies just add it to add it, and don’t to it well, then it doesn’t need to be there

i think we should really talk about how sex scenes can battle stereotypes around sex. definitely agree and think it can often give more depth to character and be really amazing if done well. it can be relatable and raw, sometimes it is essential to the plot and character development. though if they just throw one in there just because they feel like it, it is unnecessary and actually takes away from the show/movie. depends on lots of things. unrelated but i love the recent videos they've been much more interesting than tiktok drama.
I’m a very sex-positive person, I believe sex should be celebrated and talked about more to remove the stigma behind it, same goes for nudity: show human bodies, celebrate the different types, curves and features that make us who we are. Like Ben said, it’s interesting that people can watch ultra violent gory movies but not a natural consenting sex scene. If it’s R-rated and it makes sense to the story, I’ve got no problem with it. Where I draw the line is with shows like Euphoria, where the producers have created a show featuring teen characters in very hardcore scenes… like just make the show about college-age characters instead! Also I feel producers should do more to promote safe-sex in film/tv.
i like gore and horror movies because they allow me to channel my anxiety and anger into a fake scenario, i also admire the dedication put into it. however, i can't stand sex scenes because of my trauma. the only time i ever actually like anything sexual is if i'm on ao3. i think it all comes down to personal life experiences.
I’m asexual, but I usually think sex scenes are as valid as the context surrounding them - if they add to the plot and further two character’s relationship, then fair enough, but if it’s just randomly inserted for the sake of there being a sex scene, especially between characters that are supposed to be minors, then I personally think it’s unnecessary :/ I usually skip them so it’s nice when every other scene isn’t a sex one, coz sex isn’t the be all end all of a relationship (is that the saying?) To me, I believe that s3x scenes in movies shouldn't be taken THAT seriously. Since it's natural, I think it's fine, but where I personally don't like it is when it's in shows with teens in the age range of 15-17. But of course those kind of scenes are nothing anybody should be overreacting to, me personally if one of those comes up I just skip it. Including scenes like that in shows that are heavily based on minors is just downright peculiar, and disgusting. Of course those scenes in said shows don't usually take away from the entire greatness of the show, they're mainly unnecessary in shows with all the protagonists being minors.

i think i'm very much on the same page as you about having sex scenes in shows or movies. i think that it really depends on how necessary it is to the plot of the show, and of course is appropriate for the characters ages. as a screenplay writer and an all around movie nerd i have definitely seen some scenes that were just unneeded. and on the topic of ratings, i definitely think that if a show is rated R just because of a sex scene, they should probably change the rating, but i doubt that any of the companies will do so...i always thought that there isnt really a need to protect your kids from certain "adult" things, if we are being honest, they are going to learn someday, and if parents dont tell their kids, they will find out on there own one way or another. but all together i loved hearing what you had to say. have a great day

I believe depending on the plot. If this character has struggled with touch and have slowly been able to overcome that to be able to have sex it could be a beautiful and significant moment but there are other situations where you can tell a director or writer just decides to write out their sick fantasies to have them be lived out. There are also just cases where idk I don’t mind seeing a sex scene. It also depends on the genre and the rating. A lot to factor in. It’s really a little more complicated when you think about it 😅
As an Arab person, thankfully ive never had to deal with the awkwardness of s3x scenes playing in TV shows or movies while im with my family, since theyre not normalized here 💀
5:12 -5:22 this is one of the reasons I struggle with in trying to find movies and shows I enjoy. I love something with a complicated plot and action but then sometimes shows/movies will just add random sex scenes. For example Ginny & Georgia, I watched this show souly for the plot, all the sex was completely unnecessary and didn’t really build anything to the story. they do NOT need s scenes. watching it on tv lessens the mood of reality. if we're married we're probably doing enough of it at home. I would rather have a decent conversation with someone in public, and keep s scenes private and only for spouses. this gives us a break from intimacy in a marriage and gives the chance for friendships and other relationships to flourish. we often connect with people by referencing tv shows, so by not including that sort of thing in the tv shows can convey to the viewer or the person we want to connect with that we want a genuine relationship with them, and we mean then no harm.

I personally absolutely hate when they’re in shoes or movies but I also think that if the characters have a deep bond and it contributes to their character arch (my author is showing) then yes they are probably a good idea to have. Like in The Fault in Our Stars, was it a big plot contributor and was it ever really brought up again? No. But did it make the main death sadder because the couple had a more serious relationship? Yes and that brought more emotions for the audience so yeah.
If it shows a character dynamic and development, it's okay. But if it's like that one Iron Man movie where it's just a random hookup who's never mentioned again, it's not needed.
So about the poll, I don't really care if there's sex in movies/series, but I genuinely think it's beautiful when it's done right. Also, if you see this, I really love your podcast!

I have never enjoyed watching them, I think they are unnecessary, and I fast forward through them, or give up on the drama or movie. For the past two years, I have been watching Chinese and Korean dramas and the most beautiful portrayal of love between two people that I have ever seen was in a production called The Untamed. There was never even a kissing scene, yet the love that those two boys (their characters aged in the drama between 17- 33) displayed for one another was expertly shown just with subtle body language and lingering looks. It was beautiful to behold. These eastern dramas never contain sex scenes, yet they get the message of love across in a way that gratuitous sex scenes just don't. I've heard that there are eastern dramas, such as those from Thailand, that have raunchy scenes, but I haven't watched any. I want to be entertained with heartwarming storylines of slowly-cooked love that develops over the course of the series, and leaves you wondering if they will EVER kiss 💋. And when they finally do....⚡🔥❤😍😘 Sex scenes were NEVER that electrifying!

A good example of a sex scene being important to the plot I would say is dirty dancing. it's very intimate and it shows the vulnerability with each other and how close they've gotten, i think it was a very important scene and definitely deserves more recognition. as a film student i can confirm it is very situational and while some sex scenes really do add to the plot there are still some that are unnecessary, however a point no one mentions lmao is that it sells, that’s why it’s added a lot bc y’all watch it.. sex sells so?? but yea i agree it’s a grey area i think it isn’t bad when added to a film it can help the plot but yeah, also the weird films like 50 shades of grey i mean y’all watched it ?? back to the point it sells
i think we should really talk about how sex scenes can battle stereotypes around sex. definitely agree and think it can often give more depth to character and be really amazing if done well. it can be relatable and raw, sometimes it is essential to the plot and character development. though if they just throw one in there just because they feel like it, it is unnecessary and actually takes away from the show/movie. depends on lots of things. unrelated but i love the recent videos they've been much more interesting than tiktok drama.

I’m a very sex-positive person, I believe sex should be celebrated and talked about more to remove the stigma behind it, same goes for nudity: show human bodies, celebrate the different types, curves and features that make us who we are.
Like Ben said, it’s interesting that people can watch ultra violent gory movies but not a natural consenting sex scene. If it’s R-rated and it makes sense to the story, I’ve got no problem with it.
Where I draw the line is with shows like Euphoria, where the producers have created a show featuring teen characters in very hardcore scenes… like just make the show about college-age characters instead!
Also I feel producers should do more to promote safe-sex in film/tv.

I’m asexual, but I usually think sex scenes are as valid as the context surrounding them - if they add to the plot and further two character’s relationship, then fair enough, but if it’s just randomly inserted for the sake of there being a sex scene, especially between characters that are supposed to be minors, then I personally think it’s unnecessary :/ I usually skip them so it’s nice when every other scene isn’t a sex one, coz sex isn’t the be all end all of a relationship (is that the saying?) Just my opinion haha

To me, I believe that s3x scenes in movies shouldn't be taken THAT seriously. Since it's natural, I think it's fine, but where I personally don't like it is when it's in shows with teens in the age range of 15-17. But of course those kind of scenes are nothing anybody should be overreacting to, me personally if one of those comes up I just skip it. Including scenes like that in shows that are heavily based on minors is just downright peculiar, and disgusting. Of course those scenes in said shows don't usually take away from the entire greatness of the show, they're mainly unnecessary in shows with all the protagonists being minors.

i think i'm very much on the same page as you about having sex scenes in shows or movies. i think that it really depends on how necessary it is to the plot of the show, and of course is appropriate for the characters ages. as a screenplay writer and an all around movie nerd i have definitely seen some scenes that were just unneeded. and on the topic of ratings, i definitely think that if a show is rated R just because of a sex scene, they should probably change the rating, but i doubt that any of the companies will do so...i always thought that there isnt really a need to protect your kids from certain "adult" things, if we are being honest, they are going to learn someday, and if parents dont tell their kids, they will find out on there own one way or another. but all together i loved hearing what you had to say. have a great day

I believe depending on the plot. If this character has struggled with touch and have slowly been able to overcome that to be able to have sex it could be a beautiful and significant moment but there are other situations where you can tell a director or writer just decides to write out their sick fantasies to have them be lived out. There are also just cases where idk I don’t mind seeing a sex scene. It also depends on the genre and the rating. A lot to factor in. It’s really a little more complicated when you think about it 😅
As an Arab person, thankfully ive never had to deal with the awkwardness of s3x scenes playing in TV shows or movies while im with my family, since theyre not normalized here 💀

5:12 -5:22 this is one of the reasons I struggle with in trying to find movies and shows I enjoy. I love something with a complicated plot and action but then sometimes shows/movies will just add random sex scenes. For example Ginny & Georgia, I watched this show souly for the plot, all the sex was completely unnecessary and didn’t really build anything to the story. This is why I actually switched to mostly anime like bsd. Finding a show that has a completely plot and action without any sex is like finding gold in my world. 1:08 THIS IS SO REAL. they do NOT need s scenes. watching it on tv lessens the mood of reality. if we're married we're probably doing enough of it at home. I would rather have a decent conversation with someone in public, and keep s scenes private and only for spouses. this gives us a break from intimacy in a marriage and gives the chance for friendships and other relationships to flourish. we often connect with people by referencing tv shows, so by not including that sort of thing in the tv shows can convey to the viewer or the person we want to connect with that we want a genuine relationship with them, and we mean then no harm.

I personally absolutely hate when they’re in shoes or movies but I also think that if the characters have a deep bond and it contributes to their character arch (my author is showing) then yes they are probably a good idea to have. Like in The Fault in Our Stars, was it a big plot contributor and was it ever really brought up again? No. But did it make the main death sadder because the couple had a more serious relationship? Yes and that brought more emotions for the audience so yeah.
If it shows a character dynamic and development, it's okay. But if it's like that one Iron Man movie where it's just a random hookup who's never mentioned again, it's not needed.
So about the poll, I don't really care if there's sex in movies/series, but I genuinely think it's beautiful when it's done right. Also, if you see this, I really love your podcast!

With regards to the topic of this video, sex scenes are just sooooo😴. I have never enjoyed watching them, I think they are unnecessary, and I fast forward through them, or give up on the drama or movie. I think it's overdone, and it seems that modern entertainment has completely divorced love and sex; no-one ever speaks of making love anymore, just "we had sex" like it was sharing a pizza 🍕. I don't particularly want to see other people's naked bodies; I lose respect for actors who agree to strip off. It's rather narcissistic of actors who think that everyone wants to see what they've got under their clothes.
For the past two years, I have been watching Chinese and Korean dramas and the most beautiful portrayal of love between two people that I have ever seen was in a production called The Untamed. There was never even a kissing scene, yet the love that those two boys (their characters aged in the drama between 17- 33) displayed for one another was expertly shown just with subtle body language and lingering looks. It was beautiful to behold. These eastern dramas never contain sex scenes, yet they get the message of love across in a way that gratuitous sex scenes just don't. I've heard that there are eastern dramas, such as those from Thailand, that have raunchy scenes, but I haven't watched any. I want to be entertained with heartwarming storylines of slowly-cooked love that develops over the course of the series, and leaves you wondering if they will EVER kiss 💋. And when they finally do....⚡🔥❤😍😘 Sex scenes were NEVER that electrifying!

A good example of a sex scene being important to the plot I would say is dirty dancing. it's very intimate and it shows the vulnerability with each other and how close they've gotten, i think it was a very important scene and definitely deserves more recognition. (This is an example for anyone who doesn't get how sex scenes can be important).
