- After over a year of contemplation Ben has bravely decidedly to broach the subject of cults, specifically ones that are hitting a little too close to home. After watching a former acquaintance fall victim to a weird religious cult, Ben decided to do some digging into the rising trend of influencers joining cults. My dad was in a cult, and its so weird how even after they leave the effects are still somewhat there…at least in my case. Cults are scary.

You should look into the “little pebble Nowra cult” in Australia. I live about 5 minutes away from the cult, and have camped a few hundred metres away from it twice unknowingly. It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach knowing that this man was only sentenced 10 years for what he did and now he’s out again doing who knows what. P.S. Love you Ben, best podcast ever.

It was literally bizarre seeing Alyx go inactive and then she came back to tell she has joined a cult legit like , in the podcasts before hand she had gone on a trip before completely joining the cult and she was telling about how they didn't shower for weeks and she LIKED the smell of her sweat like I was so confused

Came back to this to add my drama (FOR COMMENT READERS, Not for vid cause it’s too long rip), cause I need advice pretty urgently.. so long story short I’m friends with this girl since our families are neighbors ( Only a 2 minute drive off pretty much ) and we used to be close. But when I invited her over for a sleepover a little reluctantly since she really wanted it and I just lied and went along. I ended up ditching her last second, practically the night before, and she cried. I did an asshole move by getting my mom to tell her mother and apologize and stuff but afterwards I felt bad and called. But I suck at apologies so it was half assed. I tried tho. That was like months back, we were okay for a while, but then I went into holidays and her school opened again. I’m on holiday and I’m not talking to any of my friends really, and just doing my own things since my last school year was ROUGH. I needed time, but I don’t think she knows that.
Since she’s an insta girly, she’s almost always on social media’s. She and her friends always texting and gossiping and shit. While I live in my own head, doing weird aesthetic crap on Pinterest and just listening to music and doing my hobbies alone. I don’t get to read her texts. She’d send them like days prior and I’d just read them the night we end up meeting or something. I hate notifications. And I think it’s upset her.. our families had dinner and hiked this week and she really didn’t talk to me. Which HURT! I felt bad, but for what? I apologize each time I miss the texts but I don’t think she understands I really don’t like social media. It’s just so horrible to me. I haven’t told her that yet and I dread having to confront her.

My grandma ran away from home because she was in a cult it was when she was little and when she got older she left. I think the cult was about Jesus and Christianity.

I just left what I would describe as a cult, it was an assisted living home for people with autism, well they kicked me out because I didn’t like how they didn’t respect my boundaries, after another person there did something illegal to me. The staff there think they are saviours, if they don’t involve police when the adults with autism do something illegal.
I was stalked, another girl was raped and they didn’t involve the police, but threatened us with calling the police on us for speaking out about how horrible this place was.

Dude, this sounds like what the Church of Scientology used to do back in the day. They also recruited a bunch of celebrities to use their names when they recruit new members. So of course nothing *major* bad or alarming will happen to these influencers because they have a platform. Really bad s*it will happen to ordinary people who will come to these cults because of their favorite influencers. This can actually turn really ugly
Omg yes! Im glad someone said this. They use celebrities, or in this instance "influencers" to get people to join. It's sick and evil how they manipulate people and it all boils down to control and most of all money. They scam people out of sooooooo much money and it's sad
Hey Ben! My Drama was last year. So my first year in middle school, I became friends with this girl. We will call her Amy. When I started hanging out with Amy she seemed nice but at the end of the year she started hanging out with this girl we will call her Elliot. I thought that Elliot was a bad influence on her because she would always threaten to fight other kids. So I told Amy that shes a bad influence and she got so mad! After that whenever I try to talk to Amy she insults me and says, “This is why I like Elliot better than you.” On the last day of school, her and Elliot kept slapping me and pulling my hair for no reason. And I went home crying. And now Amy is begging me to be her friend again and I dont know what to do. If your reading this I just want to say your videos are amazing! Also can you do the rock eyebrow face in your video😂

I was in a similar-ish situation, do not take amy back. She took your friendship for granted for someone who wasnt a good influence on her, and she will eventually realize, hopefully ur situation gets better tho :(

Do not take her back! She is obviously regretting it and if you take her back, she will think she can do this again and still make it out the same way! She has to understand that she hurt you, physically, and verbally.
Those 7m people came to my church in Spokane Washington as guest speakers. They were handing out little books about the breakdown of what they do and I got a free one. I spoke to the family that came to represent. I promise it was intriguing I was seriously interested (did not know it was a cult at the time)

My drama: My friend made me really depressed and then went to a mental hospital for depression a couple months later. They just got back and have been taking to me since then. I don’t know how to tell them that I don’t want to associate with them anymore after my experience because I know that they were in a bad place mentally and we have been friends for 12 years.

I knew I recognized the person in the thumbnail. I remember watching ayydubs, but I stopped watching them. I don’t know why tho. I think it’s cause their personality was off, their whole mood had changed as well. It had changed before they had left, for 5 months. And even her own mom and the ripest didn’t think she has it, and to get attention she started ticking her head and claiming she’s done it her whole life and suddenly like 2 months ago she stopped, she claims she had depression but even her mom told me she didn’t.
I want to stop being friends with her but if I do will loose a lot more friends, what do I do?
thanks for giving me advice! i do know that she was just doing it because she said she wanted us to care about her (which we would've done either way.) but yeah she was basically just doing it for attention. she had a hard time making friends in the past and she wanted to have a way to make some but i talked to her and she said she was sorry and that i shouldn't forgive her yet. i feel like we can still be friends but it'll take some time for me to actually be able to trust her again. that's how it ended up for anyone wondering!!

Ayahuasca is a brew first made and still utilized for cultural and religious practice in the Amazon River Basin. It’s made from a specific leaf and vine which when combined inhibits the brain’s ability to process DMT. This inhibition causes the high that leads to visions/hallucinations, etc. I fucking despise when people take ayahuasca without doing their research and going through the proper channels (there are plenty of fake shamans that take advantage of people’s stupidity) - that’s how you die dudeeee. I took a plants health and spirituality course that taught me all this good stuff and am currently pursuing an Anthropology degree and a botany minor for the combination of ethnobotany :)

I think its not that they’re more susceptible, but cult leaders will target them more, specifically because of their job…influencers are meant to influence people, so they would be the ideal candidate for a cult leader

Just remember that you’re not the problem, she is. I personally think you should stop being friends with her (or just try to not spend as much time with her if possible) and find nicer people who appreciate u :)

so at the beginning of the grade i was in last year, i was transferring schools and only had one friend at my new school (we'll call her V). at the beginning of the year everything was great and we were hanging out every day after school (she was on my bus too). so she started to bounce around random friend groups and every time i would feel left out and no one really liked me. eventually there was this one group that she joined and i started to make friends in that group. right after christmas i was let know by my now best friend that V was talking trash and calling me clingy and annoying to everyone in the group. all of the people in the group were on my side and i started sitting with them at lunch instead of V. V got mad and told everyone that i stole all her friends and i honestly felt bad because she had no one to turn to. after a few months she found a few friends which was good. unfortunately me and V had this one friend in common, G. G was a really good friend to me but i also felt a little weird considering G was very close with V. one day G texts me and says that V wants to be friends again. i soon got a text from V that was an apology. what should i do?
