Not terrifying, but definitely does a good job of setting horror. The demented imagery, bloody corpses, thoughtful enemy placement and level design, and awesome Bobby Prince soundtrack all work together to make a rather creepy and atmospheric experience. Quake was very much like that as well.

the bast part about the game is that its entirely 2D, id software used rendering tricks to make it look 3D. the game is so compact that basically any electronic device with a digital display, a cpu, and few buttons can run it.
I am near to your age, I found this game myself ever since my dad talked about WOLF3D/Wolfenstein. Knew about Heretic already but couldn't play it. And I started playing this recently, am loving it.
Man this brings back memories. I was born in 1995, but my dad was a computer programmer and was into games like doom, quake and etc and I remember always watching him play and thought these games were awesome. There are a lot of shooters these days, and the genre seems to be well populated. But for all of the kids being born in the 2000s if you think that cod is good, or even Halo or battlefield, you all owe one to doom and Id software. Pretty much all shooter roots can be traced to the original wolfenstein and doom. It's still an instant classic that will always be an important component to the video game industry.
I may have not been born back in 1995 but instead born in 2004. I still play a whole lot of old 90s games such as Doom, Half life 1, and Mario 64. But most kids my age play Call of duty Black ops 2 etc. I like these old games and play a lot of it. Old but still gold.
The classics are definitely where it's at! Most games now are focused so much on multiplayer and paying for DLC, rather than amazing single player experiences.
Back then we never had anything called youtube or the internet. Its so cool to actually see this game again. Its also amazing how a shotgun could hit and kill something so far away lol.

oh god... the MEMORIES!! when i was a kid playing this, i used to imagine that your character was an insane man running around shooting people in the streets, like he would see the world as this Martian Hellscape, but it's really just his neighborhood
I always love watching this Longplay once in a while since the guy playing always takes his time and feels a lot more methodical than most other players on YT, where going the fastest is always a priority. Here, he actually akes the time to show where the secrets are, not just quickly go through them for the 100%.
I was 9 when I played this. 9.. I had played Super Mario and Duck Hunt before, and a few other NES games, but this blew my mind, warped it, and scared the shit out of it - and I am eternally grateful.

Agreed! S/he was just suave & his/her play was too clean. & such precision somehow takes away a bit from the DOOM 90s experience of 90s kids. While watching this, I recognize the secret rooms & all, & I realize that I know them because of all the blood & deaths I endured in the name of exploration. Haha.
I think you make a good point there. Seeing someone do a speed run feels strange if you've never seen the game before. This is how I play the game, relying on good strategy and resource management rather than pixel-perfect monster dodging and map exploitation. It certainly makes the game seem scarier, at the very least.
Damn, this brings back memories! There was a Shareware store in a mall not far from where I lived back in the day (1994.) I got the first episode of Doom on floppy from them, and fell in love right then and there. It was a hell of a game (pun intended) for its time.
it amazes me how many ports of this there are, and after 17 years, the game is still going strong. I loved the PSX version, and thankfully I found a PSX TC. It actually scared me as a kid, the soundtrack is very creepy.

@Ronnro278 Yeah - that's what impresses me about these longplays that Cubex55 puts here. The players complete the whole game and find every possible secret while doing so.
This was great. I remember thinking this game was so cool. Which it was back then. I had just switched from nintendo nes playing this on our familys first pc back in 95 or something.
Nice job alot better than what I can do,more of a fighting game and RPG person myself. My sisters and I played the doom franchise when we were kids so this brought back nostalgic feels.

Doom is one of the best video game series ever.
I was born in 2004 but my dad showed me this game and I was instantly into it. I would have never liked cod if doom wasn't born
This game brings back memorys
I was born in 2002, and I remember my dad showing this game to me at the age of six. So many memories
I was born in 1996 and I remember watching my dad play all this game. I used to be so scared of the monsters and weird sounds
