In this off camera flash tutorial video I take you behind the scenes on a portrait shoot I did on the beach with my friend Lisa. All the photographs in this video were taken on my Sony A9 camera with Sony 35mm 1.8 lens, using off camera flash.
I used the Godox Ad200 speed light on this shoot, along with the MagMod MagSphere, which I find is a fantastic modifier for portrait photographs.

Beautiful work. I have been capturing beach family portraits and beach weddings for over 10 years. For most of those shoots, I used a 25" beauty dish. When it is breezy, it is tough to keep in place. The soft light you get out of the MadMod is soft enough. Plus, the beauty dish is way too large to leave in the shot, and try to remove with Photoshop. Thank you for this very educational video.

Great job Neil, as always, beautiful dramatic colorful shots. There is one thing I would change in you favorite shot: The sun comes from Lisa's left side and the flash from Lisa's right which makes a little disharmony for me. I think that lighting from the same side as the sun could work a hair better. But I know on shoots like this a lot is on photographer's mind and this is a minor thing. Anyway, well done! Love your work, keep it up!

Neil, I feel that this could also be done at your sync speed and shooting at a higher aperture. Nothing in background but clouds. You would’ve gotten a beautiful sun burst.
Hi Greg, for me it is a personal preference but I really don't like that sun burst effect, I don't like the look of it and iit would really distract from the bride. Plus, I would have to shoot at something like f16 which would give far too much detail in the foreground and background and show up ever little dust spot. For portraits I will always choose to shoot wide open if I can
First of, amazing work Neil! You are a great teacher. I think its a creative choice at the end. They are both valid opinions and it depends on your preferences. I have done both, wide open with nd filter and more closed down aperture without, in the later one you have to be even more aware of the framing and details in the background ground.

Great images! Love your bts videos. Is there any reason why you chose HSS over closing your aperture to get your ambient ? I guess they give the same result. DoF not really an issue with these? Great images regardless, keep up the great work 👌
Thank you very much Stephen! That's a good question - I much prefer shooting at HSS because it allows me to shoot at wider apertures, which I always prefer for portraits - especially when shooting through things. If I were to use keep my shutter around 1/200 I would have to be something like f16 for the equivalent and I wouldn't like that much depth of field - plus you'd see lots of dust spots I am sure 😂 the other option would have been an ND filter. Great question!

Love your content and your work! Just have a question. I just bought the ad200 and the Godox ML-CD15 Diffusion Dome. Do you think I will get good results? I do have softboxes but I'm scared it is going to be a lot of wind. I dont have an assistant. When you use F 1.8, is the picture totally sharp? I have tried before and it will get kinda blurry. What tips can you tell me knowing that I'm going to have my first weeding? What metering mode and zone do work for you? Regards😊

How come your Gel didn’t give off an orange look? What made the picture was your editing?
I can't remember exactly what I did in this video as it was a while ago now but if you use CTO (Orange) and CTB (Blue) together with manual white balance it allows you to retain natural skin tones whilst changing the colour temperature of the rest of the image. If you use a warm gel but shoot with a cool manual white balance the background becomes much cooler whilst the skin tones will be natural for example
Just amazing shots! I'd be curious how you set your white balance for these shots. Do you set at 5000 the color of the flash and adjust in everything in Lightroom, or use the trick of adjusting it higher in camera to enhance the sunset? I didn't notice the use of any gels to offset the warmer color so the model is the right color. Can you give some guidance here?

What is the reason for u to choose godox v860ii? Is getting a V860ii better or godox V1? Some pro use v1 with ad200

Hi Ray, thank you very much! I always expose for whatever is the brightest part of the photograph - or as close to that as I can get - so in this case that was the bright sky
Hi, Love the lighting. I am only starting with 1 light set up I have a ad200pro, I also have a Canon 580ex. which I cant use with the god trigger. so I am only going to be using
a God flash with a mag mod set. I was hoping to get the same effect that you got with one flash. but maybe I will have to wait some time for another flash. can you still get a reasonable shot with the sunset using one flash? as I haven't tried as yet, am waiting for for my mag mod kit to come.

Thank you very much Paul! Yes, it can be - unfortunately the hotshoes on Godox speedlights are not as sturdy or well designed as from other manufacturers

I was just wondering, why shooting at so high speed shutter in this case? Do your really need the shutter that fast? Asking not to critisize but because, I dont have high speed sinc and too many flashes to be able to replicate... so may be if I lower the shutter speed, would be still able to freeze the action and not needing hss and second flash?
Would appreciate any advice 🙏😇
Hi Aleksander, thank you so much! That's a great question :-) The reason is used HSS in this instance is because if I didn't I would have to shoot around f11 or f14. For more this is not a good aperture for portraits because far too much of the photograph is sharp. The best solution would have been to use a ND filter on my camera as that may have allowed me to not require HSS and still be able to shoot at a wide aperture but unfortunately I didn't have one with me on this shoot

I use the clone stamp tool in Photoshop, although you could use generative fill now as well
Will a Godox 860 iii be powerfull enough?
It will struggle in brighter light I'm afraid - unless you have it very close to the subject. As the ambient light drops though it will be fine 😊
Incredible photos! Thanks for filming this. One question: what did you use to quickly attach your ad200 to the light stand? In one scene it looked like you used the MagMod MagShoe - but that has a hot shoe attachment and the AD200 has no shoe attachment.
The AD200 can be screwed onto a light stand.
when you buy a magshoe they give you the little hexagonal cold shoe bolt which you can screw into the AD200

You should have used a ND filter so you could have avoid having to have HSS to get more from the flash.
You are right but I didn't have one in my bag - these were not the shots I had planned to take. But yes, ND filters are great!

Hi Dago - I edited these particular images in Photoshop and cloned out the posts using content aware fill. I will be making a full tutorial video for my Patreon in the next few days in which I will show you exactly how I edited this set

Yes, on some images I felt as though one speedlight wasn't enough - when the sun came through it was very bright

You’re worried about dust spots and here you are cloning out the tripod stands?! Come on Neil, be honest with us, you know perfectly well you don’t have to use high speed sync, and you would have gotten the same exact results.
Hi Rich, shooting at f12 or thereabouts will make the foreground and background look very different than if shooting at 1.8, it would make the foreground very much in focus which I always avoid with portraits. What I should have done was use an ND filter really but I wouldn't shoot at a narrow aperture in this situation regardless. Cloning out the light stands is unavoidable
