This movie hit me like a bus in mean girls. I had a very tight plan of what I wanted to do in life. I was in my last year of college when that all fell apart. I accidentally overdosed on prescription medication and I had to dropout of college and instead of moving out I had to stay with my parents so they could care for me. I thought my life was ruined and worthless but now 5 years later I have my own apartment, a college degree, I have a really fun summer job in a zoo and I’m studying to become a social studies teacher! Life is pretty great!

To answer your question at the end, YES I have definitely felt the way this movie depicted the lost souls. This very movie actually got me out of that rut I'd let myself stay in for months. I dropped out of college and all I ever did was stay glued to my phone. Can't speak for everyone of course but I'm willing to bet almost all of us can relate. Screen addiction is too real man. Social media, gaming apps, pornography, movie streaming, etc. It all just pulls you back in again and again and again without a second thought. I watched this movie during one of my endless tv binges and cried so hard. I turned the tv off, got up and cleaned the whole house while playing music. Got a job within the week and enrolled back in classes. Now I have my degree, a lead position at a job I've been in for 6 straight months, and a place of my own. I decided when I finally got the keys to my place that I don't want a television or a microwave. I want to be as tuned in to my surroundings as possible and actually spend mindful time with myself, my food, my belongings, my hobbies and my home. Typing this comment on my day off from the only electronic in the household, my cell phone.
Thank you always for the continued content. Endless love and support to you from SATX 🙏🏼❤

Chills of joy reading your comment. This movie hit me as well-and it’s pretty fun to watch other people have the same thing happen to them. The pandemic made it too easy to fall into the screen trance, and though I’m a very positive and observant person, this movie helped remind me once again that there is an entire world outside of the screen, and it’s calling all of our names to be a part of it.

The best thing about this movie for me is that you can become a lost soul being obsessed with (finding) joy. At the end Joe says :"and I will live every second of it" and not "and I will enjoy every second of it". All you have to do is live... nothing less, nothing more. Everything you do has it's purpose. You learn from mistakes and the ordinary as well as the beautiful and special. But that mustn't be the focus of your life. ❤❤❤

I’m so glad I got to watch this for the first time along side you. I watched this on Patreon and I think it’s probably my favourite Pixar movie now. This film got me so emotional and it stayed with me because it really made me think deeply about the message and life. I could definitely relate to that fear of dying prematurely and feeling like your life was meaningless and so the message that the purpose of life is simply to live really hit deep. I feel like I always knew that to be the truth deep down but with the way the world works it’s so easy to feel the pressure to find your purpose or to be more or do more. Remembering to just be is so freeing and I’m certainly going to apply that to my life from now on.
I also really loved how realistically they presented the lost souls aspect. The voices of 22’s inner critics was such a great depiction of what anxiety feels like in our minds. “The zone” was also pretty accurate too. As someone who loves the piano, it was really cool to see how the film visually portrayed what being “in the zone” feels like. It really does feel like you’re floating and it is as the film says, a spiritual experience. And to your question about if there is Jazz in Heaven…I personally think there would be. I like to think that all the joy and beauty we have in this world is just small preview of Heaven. PS: If I had a chance to go back and correct things like Joe, yes I would want to take that chance. I’ve spent a large portion of my life trying to achieve in order to run from that feeling of “being lost” and so if I had a second chance to live it with the same mindset 22 did instead (no pressure, just pure joy), I’d definitely take that chance. As much as I’d imagine Heaven being a wonderful place, I do think the human experience is a unique one and I love that this film reminded me to be present in the moment and appreciate the experience of being alive :)

Music has always been one of the most important things in my life. Specifically piano. This movie came out at a time when I had just gotten out of the hospital for a suicide attempt. This movie made me absolutely bawl my eyes out multiple times and helped me see the good in the little bits of life to hold onto. Thank you for your reaction! I enjoy your insight to these movies!

Oh YES! Pixar junkie since I was very little (30 now) - with my favorites being pretty set-in-stone - and this instantly climbed to my Top 3 on Christmas Day of 2020! It was the perfect way to cap off that year, and I cannot wait to hear your amazingly insightful commentary and after-thoughts! Thank you for choosing this! I just know I'm gonna cry all over again!

To be honest, a few years back the thought of not having a purpose scared the heck out of me. But these days, this idea is rather comforting and relaxing to me! Because that means I don't have to rush through life, I don't have to achieve "great" things just to impress anyone (especially not myself), it is enough to just breathe and get through every day, find something beautiful and precious in every day if I can and persue my dreams in a more relaxed pace.
It wasn't this movie that taught me these things but watching it just made my opinion stronger. I've been so depressed for the longest time, for several reasons but not knowing why I am even on this earth and what to do with my life was what dragged me down the hardest.

When I first watched this at the time over at my Niece's, it wasn't what I thought it was going to be either. Good movie though. One of the guys who wrote the music is on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. John Baptiste is his band leader. They even modeled his real hands for the lead character. ☺

I am currently a lost soul. That’s how it feels, anyway. Kind of feel like I screwed everything up and it’s too late to fix. But the worst part, I have no motivation or desire to even try. Very existential feeling. No real clue about how to even attempt to dig myself out of it.
But, I’m extremely good at acting like none of that exists. Until something like this movie reminds me.

This is exactly the movie the modern teenager/young-adult needs. (I explain it a bit further down in my comment.)
The interesting thing is when you think of normal movies, for example disney movies, the mc has a goal, a destiny, a purpose they need to furfill. We've been fed these narratives for so long, some of us have internalized it. Students are following their dreams more often (I'm generalizing a bit, but I'm trying to get the following point across:), but following your dreams cn be hard and you might fail and never get to do the thing you wanted to do.
In these modern times, plenty of students are pressured into 'knowing what they need to do with their life'. Kids here are between the age of 16 to 18 when they have to choose what they are going to study. And I genuinly think that a lot of us are hyper focused on where we are taking our lives. (Not that there is anything wrong with that). This hyper fixation can cause life to pass you by. We forget that simply being alive, that living is enough. We get so much pressure on us. I have a kind parent who gave me time to figure it out. I took a gap year, not many get that luxury, if you are willing to call it that.
I've seen a lot of reactions on this movie and I always see it in the comments, that this movie helped people take a weight off their shoulders. It did for me. I cried a lot. I love this movies message.

The comment about 22 being a teenage soul... I guess she's kind of an allegory for disgruntled youth that fall out of the school system.

Soul got the best animated picture at the Oscars. In my opinion Wolfwalkers was far more worthy of the title. I highly suggest you recommend it (and the rest of the unconnected trilogy, The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea - it's not for nothing the studio responsible is called the Studio Ghibli of Europe!)

The nuerolink technology that elon musk is working on currently will one day let us save and store memories and be able to look back at them, I'm not educated on the topic but it could be something like when he sees his whole life story and who he is.

Glad you kept the emphasis on the fact that it was a thing that didn't work for you, I personally believe it to be an incredible gem though flawed in some ways ahah
most people love it for its celebration of life and humanity and it's unique approach to these big dreams narrative that has the honesty to say that sometimes you get what you wanted and it's not enough, not what you envisioned it to be etc, and that's okay, it hit especially hard since it came out mid pandemic as everyone was re-evaluating their life choices since they finally had the time to stop and think about life, hope that helps at least understanding why people connected with it so much :)
