I’ve taken rides on this thing for almost 30 years, and it’s wonderful to see it’s in better shape than when I was a kid (even tho I do miss the driver narration). Long live the Calico Mine Train!
There´s this weird fascination with these old Animatronics i have. The movement is so nonhuman, but also haunting at the same time. Can´t really describing it better, but i love it.
Funny thing is those animatronics are the newer ones for the park. They replaced all the original static figures in the mid 2010s on this and the log ride
I gotta say, I'm really impressed. The number and size of the water feature, the size of the rooms you pass and the theming is perfect. A lot of though went into this ride. I gotta check it out
As one who explores and documents abandoned mines in the American Southwest, I can definitely confirm that everything depicted in this ride is very authentic. I rode this a few years ago and was really impressed with the level of detail and how accurate things were. That large room the others have mentioned in their comments is what the miners would have referred to as a “stope.“ A stope is the large chamber that remains underground after the miners remove a large body of ore.
These old school dark rides are like a window into the past. Whenever you ride them, you can seriously _feel_ the energy they have. I truly hope this ride never changes. To change it would be to destroy history at this point. Preserve this ride exactly as it was from the day it first opened.
Used to dislike this ride as a kid, but now as a young adult, I appreciate all the work and art inside this ride. Definitely a good ride to take it in when you’re feeling tired. Or honestly a great ride in general.
I was a driver on the Calico Mine Train Ride from 1997 to 1999. Nothin' beats the narration from the actual train driver. Get rid of the robot narration. Long live the Pot Room!
Could you provide some info on operating the train? It seems to me to be mostly braking, as the layout is on a continual downgrade, correct? I'm also curious about the upstop rails they've put in place... was derailment a common occurrence prior to their installation?
Nope we operated speed and braking. There is a lift mechanism on the track about half way through the ride to bring the train up to the upper level. Train is completely controlled by the operator, except for when it engages with the lift.
@@Lil_cauty Being 16 years old then and having a job and not sitting in my mom’s basement playing video games like you… yep, I proud that I was working.
This was the first ride I went on when our school did this pre-last day of school trip. I actually liked it, I can smell the water and feel the heat from this video. edit: the stalagmites/stalagtites (or however it's pronounced) part felt sorta eerie yet surreal with the music it used.
Bud Hurlbut knew what he was doing when he made this. The recent refurb looks great, I'm lucky to have ridden it once since then. In the decades prior to that there were sections of fiberglass mountain falling away and you could see into the next room. It's funny to think Walt Disney liked it so much he borrowed Walter Knott's ride for his own park ( Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland ) and yet it still never held a candle to this one. I'm glad this ride is still around.
This was a really nice ride and I was impressed with how much they included. I was expecting more of a two minute "kiddie" ride, but this was really enjoyable. Thank you so much for sharing it.
The right that you’re going on I’ve been on there when I was five and that was my favorite ride. It was my favorite. I never got scared, but sometimes I cried, but it was my favorite ride still.
my dad used to always love this one, glad its still open, cant wait to go again sometime, glad its still open unlike mystery lodge :( that was my favorite, i love this one too, i miss it
I used to go on this ride all the time, during the week nobody would be on so I would have most of the train to myself. During the dark parts I used to climb from cart to cart and confuse the workers when I would be in a completely different cart by the end of the ride lol and to hurry up at the end if no one was looking I would jump off as it ends so I can go run to the front of the line to ride again.
Well, not exactly the same ride I took for the first time in 1966, and many times in my childhood thereafter...but the spirit is the same. Please Knotts, don't ever get rid of this icon. (I do miss the original ethereal music played during the multi-lighted caverns sequence)
It's not a thrill Ride but it's fun to sit on the cool off on that you know and you write off enough you get to know the miner's names like the one that's pushing the cart in the alcove his name is Fred. 😉
I was scared of this ride when i was a little kid lol... The park was ruined when they added coasters.. I miss the steeplechase ride.. Now it's like just another theme park..
WOW, had a rip off version of it in the UK called the 'Gold Mine' at Blackpool. Not a patch on this. Unfortunetely never going ride it, You Yanks dont do things by halves, gotta give you that ;-)

If you notice it's actually one LARGE ROOM you go around.
@@RabbitsInBlack I did and it looks amazing. Definitely putting it on my bucket list
This ride actually opened in November 1960. And the only changes made since then was the animatronic miners and better lighting in a couple spots
This is better themed than Spider Man Blasty whatever it's called

As a kid I loved this ride and I'm glad it's still there. It seems like they have improved the scenery instead of just letting the ride deteriorate.
I'm amazed by the size of some of the rooms and the excellent lighting of each scene.

This is a great attraction, one that is lacking from the modern Disney Parks. It is very relaxing and fun for everyone.
Grew up with Knotts so many great memories....just seeing the sights and hearing the sounds brings back all those memories from the park. Thanks!!

This is my favorite ride at Knott's

The best of all the video POV's I have ever seen. Great camera work!
This shows that Cedar Fair parks have some pretty good themed rides.
This was built way before Cedar Fair’s ownership in the park. It was designed by Bud Hurlbut and funded by Walter Knott himself in 1960.

That’s more impressive than I expected!
My all time favorite ride at Knotts. I ride it atleast 2 or 3 times before I go. Can't wait to ride it again this summer 🤗

so cool
This attraction looks so awesome! I bet it cost a fortune to build. I hope I get to ride it one day
It opened in 1960, and cost just over $1 million.
@@TheHaloRed Yes, I read that, too. To my understanding this is quite a lot of money for the sixties
The video quality is amazing! What camera are you using? It has such incredible quality in low light!

Calico Mine was a great value
When I was a kid that last blast scene used to all move. And they had fake rocks falling on you. It used to scare the heck out of me.
I like that this ride
I think this opened very soon after the Mine Train Through Nature's wonderland, so it's kinda like knowing what it's like to ride that.
I wish I had the money to go there. It looks like so much fun, especially during Halloween.
this is the earliest i’ve ever been :O
Knotts is the best cedar fair park❤
I've only ever rode this attraction during Knotts Halloween Haunt.

The first ride I went on
Does it have any drops or scary for children?
How did they put the lift hill into this ride HOW...?
They did it by doing the Lorax clap
👏👱♂️
What’s with the loud metal noise in the pond room?
I wonder how they keep inside from getting moldy from all the water and steam during the ride?!?!?
The water is chlorinated.
Cedar Fair’s only THEME park.
I miss having the monsters in it during scary farm
Way longer than most rides today.
