  • Climb aboard as we venture to Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park California, home to the Ghost Town and Calico Railroad! Built in 1952, the 5/8-mile long tourist line boasts a small but impressive roster of some historical railroad equipment, including engine #340. Built in 1881 by Baldwin, this locomotive was originally delivered to the Denver and Rio Grande as #400 and named "Green River". When the D&RG was reorganized as the Denver and Rio Grande Western in the 1920's, the loco was modernized and given its present number. During its 70 year career, #340 worked all over the narrow gauge line in Colorado and New Mexico, and even hauled the last train out of Pagosa Springs. #340 finished its working days out of Montrose as a switcher. Walter Knott saved the engine from scrap in 1951, and had it loaded on a flatcar for the trip to California. It first ran on the GT&C in 1952 and continues to haul thousands of guests around the park each year.
Also spotted are coaches #325 and #326 - These historic cars once served the Rio Grande's San Juan passenger train. The combination car "Chama" was once a parlor car and also used on the San Juan. The two open air cars #5576 and #9519 were once a stock car and a gondola car, respectively. Ironically the two cars have been modified over time to represent the opposite of what each other used to be, with #5576 now a gondola and #9519 a stock car! The caboose #0402 once ran on the fabled Rio Grande Southern railroad.
We catch the train in action both on board and track-side, witnessing scenes such as the engine taking water, and blowing down. The GT&C is a fantastic operation, and the crew are friendly and informative, as well as humorous!
Whether you're a railroad buff, theme park fan or just interested in riding, we highly recommend a visit. But be on your guard; you never know when a train robbery might occur!
Also just before I posted this video, my channel officially reached 100 subscribers! This is a big milestone and a goal achieved, and I must acknowledge the folks who have helped me get to this point. THANK YOU!

We lived in Westminister and used to go to Knotts every weekend it was free to enter. That was back in the early 60s. 10 cent hotdogs.

I noticed this has the 1881 on the locomotive. Is this still considered an operable 1800’s engine, or maybe not since it’s been patched with other parts? Reason I ask is only other one I can find in the west is in Carson city Nevada at their museum and they only take it out on rare occasions. Maybe you know some other 1800’s engines? Thanks

@NostalgiaFix81 Engine 340 would definitely classify as a genuine, operating 1880s steam locomotive, despite the fact that yes many parts have been replaced since then. So is Knott's other 2-8-0, RGS 41.
The museum at Carson City has two 1875 engines ("Glenbrook" and "Inyo"), both of which retain many more original components than 340 does. Also, both have been accurately restored to that time period, whereas 340 represents the 1940-50 era.
The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Museum has two steam engines from the 1800s. The first is "Tahoe", a sister to the "Glenbrook" and the oldest running narrow gauge train in the country. The second is a little Porter 0-4-0 built in 1889 and privately owned. Both these locos can be seen throughout my channel. There's also the "Eureka" too. I've probably missed a few but these are the most notable. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting!

I have a photo of me and my dad and grandpa standing in front of the Green River #40. Not 400 or 340?

@Tinstared Back when Knott's acquired their two steam locos, they decided to renumber #340 to 40 for whatever reason (perhaps to make it consecutive with #41).
Another bit of trivia: "Green River" was the name given to the engine by the D&RG back in 1881 when it was #400. She still bears this nickname on her cab.

Yes, I heard about that. I'm sure the folks at Knott's are very happy to have 41 back. Thanks for commenting!

No mention of the "other" steam locomotive there?

@2quintly Rio Grande Southern 41 is at the Durango and Silverton for a rebuild right now, marking the first time the loco has returned to Colorado since the RGS was abandoned. The crew at Knott's hope to have 41 back and in service as main motive power this fall.
