    I love being able to see the structure; it lets you appreciate the engineering work that went into it. And the fact that a relatively simple, slow coaster can still scare the heck out of people is a testament to what a brilliant idea a coaster in the dark is

    • @ACE61502
      @ACE61502 2 месяца назад +6

      Having ridden it with the lights on and off.... it's scarier with the lights ON. So many spots where the structure is just above head level. LOL

    • @Planetvorton
      @Planetvorton Месяц назад +2

      I mean, the fear I feel from Space Mountain is from the structure falling apart and/or beheading. It’s also just painful in general.

    • @ryan-uk6jf
      @ryan-uk6jf 19 дней назад +1

      @Planetvorton I think you have more of a chance to die from a car crash then have the entire super structure of a indoor roller coaster collapsing

  • @troublesomebirdsong
    @troublesomebirdsong Год назад +279

    I love how Dark Rides are often essentially just very simple rollercoasters but with the lights off. The atmosphere, sounds and lighting literally sell the entire thing, to the extent that, when I see a mediocre outdoor rollercoaster, I generally think 'You should've just built it inside and turned the lights off and it would've been 10 times better'.

    as a disney employee, 1:23 is where the lowest structure is to the ride vehicle, it's lower than the red strobe tunnel at the end, and what makes it scary is that people can touch the red strobe tunnel so that means they can easily touch the lowest structure.

We were stuck there for about 10-15 minutes and when the lights came on it was amazing. We got to see so many carts on the Alpha side go past and we just kept waving at them. It was hilarious. We also loved waving at the People Mover whenever they’d pass. I’d like to think we created a core memory for so many people that day. 😂

    In my opinion, Space Mountain is meant to be experienced with all of its effects, in near-total darkness. The main thing Space Mountain banks on is the unknown. Unless you’ve memorized every part of the track, you’ll never know what’s coming up ahead and that is what gives Space Mountain some, if not most of its intensity.

      Space mountain isn’t really a fast ride, if I’m not mistaken the cars ride and test track are almost 2 times faster! (I think SM top speed is 27.5mph whilst the cars ride is 40mph & test track can reach 64.7mph!) What makes SM scary is how dark it is, causing unpredictability, how loud it is, how sharp the turns are, how bumpy of a ride it is & the seats! The one at DL is much smoother than this one and the DL car makes you feel MUCH safer!

    All I could think about on this ride was losing my head since I had heard from my friends about riding with the lights on and how close everything actually. That plus the dark and having to hold onto all of my stuff with a death grip really set the mood for the rest of that evening lol.

    I was on this (at Disneyland, not -world) when we suddenly stopped in a block section pretty high up. Then the lights came on and they announced that we were going to have to exit due to some issue. Sitting there looking at pretty much the whole track made me really appreciate theming and how it can add a lot to an otherwise mediocre ride.

      @@mrgl338 Yeah. You ride in the dark with little fiber optic lights hanging down to look like stars. It's very trippy to not be able to see the track, because you really do get the sensation that you're just flying around. I figured Disneyworld would be the same.

    I actually rode Space Mountain with the lights on a few years ago. My science teacher hosted a (very expensive) trip to Florida to see Tampa, Disney World, WonderWorks Museum, etc. We got to ride Space Mountain with the lights on, then off. The best thing, we were there before the theme park had opened so there was no line. It was, needless to say, awesome

      @@dme1016 , that's what separates Disney from other theme parks and roller coasters. Disney puts in the extra effects to hide the mechanisms behind the ride and make everything appear like something else. Their rides aren't the most extreme roller coasters out there, but the use of story telling makes an otherwise mediocre warehouse roller coaster into something fantastic.

    Here's a few tidbits of info about Space Mountain...Fyi, I'm a retired, in 2016, Engineer with Lockheed Martin here in Orlando but I just finished a two year stint (I resigned in February) in Security at WDW and I worked in Custodial at Magic Kingdom back in '74 - '75 my Sr. year in H.S. The current speed of Space Mountain is 28 MPH (Fyi, 7 Dwarfs Mine Train is 32 MPH), but back in '74/'75 when the ride hadn't yet opened the cast members were allowed free test rides during their lunch breaks...at that time the Engineers had the speed at 50 MPH...I heard at the time the engineers also did test runs at 55 and 60 mph. When the ride opened in '75 it was set at 42 mph and it was completely blacked out inside so the girders could not be seen at all. After a couple "incidents" the speed was lowered several times (down to 35 mph, then 32 mph and finally to today's 28 mph) and the lights were turned up several times so the girders can easily be seen (so as to hopefully keep people from trying to stand up). Needless to say a blacked out SM at 50 MPH was a hair raising ride that you felt lucky to have survived...the G forces I remember were pretty damn forceful.
