I accidentally stumbled on this and even though it is from 4 years ago I thought I'd comment. My dad who is 82 used to be a 'name brand only' type guy. Del Monte canned vegetables and so on when I was a kid. Of course, back then 'generic' was pretty shoddy but now generic and store brands are as good or better than the big names. Just the other day we were discussing this because I had gotten some frozen fish sticks - a name brand that was mostly just coating, hardly any fish. I mean you don't expect much from fish sticks in the first place but for the name brand and price, they were very disappointing. I was hoping to find fish sticks like the ones i remember from childhood that were much bigger than they are now. On a whim the next time I shopped I picked up the Great Value fish sticks just to see if they were better or worse. They were SO much better, they were much more like the ones I remember from childhood, still not quite as big but they had less coating and were softer overall not so hard/crunchy. Anyway, I shop with my dad regularly and I mentioned it to him and he said "The Walmart stuff, almost all of it is really good." I laughed and said, You used to hate if mom got generic when I was a kid he said either it's gotten better or I'm not as picky now. I think it has gotten better. It is surprising sometimes when you realize the generic/store brands are better for less money.
Walmart's beef ravioli canned labeling looks like it was cooked in dumpster... then the dumpster dumped it's cooked beef ravioli into the metal cans... They say never judge a book by it's cover... and it's obvious that the walmart's ravioli looks so much more delicious than the boyardee.
we dont eat it much at all now days either, but for a quick meal, if the hubby has to run to his kung fu work out, i add onion powder, garlic powder, sugar and some italian seasons and after nuking it, i add some dry italian cheese on top and he loves it that way.
I recently found half a dozen extra large cans of the GV ravioli that 'expired' in 2019. Now I'm contemplating give em a try. May God have mercy on me...
So both were made by ConAgra, the company that owns the Chef Boyardee trademark and recipes. I am with you in your assessment of each, as they are not the same recipe. I believe they use the 90's era recipe for the private label cans (in this case, Great Value) and their thinner, sweeter updated recipe for the name brand. It should be noted that NEITHER tasted like the Throwback recipe that came out about 5 years ago for that limited year run. I also believe the Great Value version has been discontinued by Walmart, which is a real shame, especially considering the differences.
I'll have try the Great Value. The Chef Boyardee overstuffed is even worse than the regular ravioli. I dont like how thin the pasta is. The ravioli easily breaks open when I stir it around in the bowl.
Try this some time. 2 cans of your favorite pasta and one can of Hormel corned beef hash. Trust me it really works. Makes for a real meaty tasty treat.
For a while, I thought there was a lot of inconsistency in the production of Chef Boyardee ravioli. One can that I got was almost inedible and Bland. A later can I got tasted much better. What I found was the storage temperature had an effect on the quality. Cans that I had left in my car overnight when the temperatures dropped to around 40 degrees, would come out watery and tasteless. And the pasta would have a really bad texture. The next time I got a watery can. I cooked it for at least 10 minutes and got it nice and hot. This seem to relax the starches and cause the sauce to thicken up and the pasta tasted much better.
Yeah the key is to cook it via stovetop and let it simmer so the sauce thickens. If you microwave you get that runny sauce, but the trade off is it takes 2 min in microwave and less clean up lol
Not a competition. Chef Boyardee wins every time. Loved it as a kid. Love it now. Very convenient. Pop the top n dig in. The delicious sauce is just right. The ravioli and/or mini ravioli is delightful w the hamburger meat inside. I devour a can and enjoy every delicious bite. Thank u founder Hector Boyardee. U have a wonderful product I enjoy and will continue to enjoy for a long time. This is true comfort food. ❤😋
This is so good when you season it with garlic, pepper ,salt ,add beef bouillon powder for a more savior meat taste ..add Parmesan or mozzarella..it's so good lol omg

I used to eat it but then I saw the RUclips videos talking about bugs in canned ravioli. Great video though 👍🏼 u almost make me want to eat again lol. I have some non italia ravioli that comes from aldi u should try it’s not bad
In the UK , we dont have chef boyardee products, Heinz make most of our canned food products and they're not bad if you just want something simple, but again in my opinion, store brand is better! Some will disagree but the store own brand is better on a lot of things👍
