- People say Great Value is just as good as the original, so I did a blind taste test to see how the Walmart knock-offs stack up against the queen of the snack aisle, Little Debbie.

When my great-granddaughter was 3, she was pretending to be a dispatcher when I offered her an off-brand honeybun. She took one bite, and without breaking character, she picked up her "microphone" and announced, "Rescue Emergency, I have a bad honey bun here!" 🤣

For those mentioning the boxes: They’re only on the table to show exactly what I’m eating and to place what I thought was the cake brand with the corresponding box. The cakes were plated in another room and placed in front of me in a random order. Only the producer Josh knew which cake was which.

The video was still well worth watching. I mean, you are a comedic genius and we know that a fellow Alabamian will always be able to tell the difference between Lil Debbie's and ANY OTHER imposters.

I read your comment just as he said the "tastes like DG smells" part. And I once (only once) bought a box of Reese's Pieces that tasted like the dollar general.

@@MilwaukeeWoman yep, in the last year the price like doubled. I do buy walmart nutty buddy knock offs cause they really aren't that far off for the price differential tho this past month the walmart brand price went from $1.50 to $1.89.
Growing up a "Little Debbie" as I'm only 4'11", I had my first LD in 1984 when I was 16. Love them a lot. Over the years they have gotten smaller and smaller, but I will never eat a knock off brand of these cakey goodness.
I typically don't eat Little Debbies that much anymore. The recipe has definitely changed since my childhood. Cheaping out to meet a price point. I would happily pay 20 cents more if I could get the old recipes.
I hadn't eaten stuff like that in a good long while, saw some that I used to love as a kid, bought them.. They taste way waxier and cheaper than I remember. Dunno if my tastebuds have changed, or the recipe changed. Probably a bit of both. The peanutbutter bars used to be my fav thing in the world as a kid, now they are just okay-ish. haha. Dont even get me started on zebra cakes. I remember those being SO good as a kid. Now it tastes like mushy corn syrup bread with a wax coating
@@thewarlocke5303 I can affirm it's not just a taste bud change. The recipe now is way worse than it ever was. I've even noticed a difference since the regulations were relaxed in 2021 because of covid.
Especially Nutty Bars... excuse me, they're called Nutty Buddys now.
@@XianHu Who are you correcting? 'Nutty Bars' is still a common name, and everyone knows what you're talking about. a lot of off brands use it too.
@@gaiasguardian205 Myself; Little Debbie brand used to use the name Nutty Bars, but changed it to Nutty Buddys somewhere around 2016. Something that was a little confusing to me because when I was growing up, Nutty Buddys were ice cream cone treats, similar to Nestles Drumsticks.
For those of us who don't buy snack cakes very often, we may sometimes wonder if it's worth it to pay the extra for Little Debbie brand - or if the store brand are just as good. Thank you for helping us to choose wisely!

There's a handful of foods that you just get the namebrand of, without question, because the alternatives genuinely just don't stack up. Oreos is my favorite example, because I haven't found an off-brand oreo that even comes close to the original.
The real lesson is that snack cakes are trashy, and no one should ever buy them.

I know Matt doesn't like Cosmic Brownies, but they are my favorite and Aldi Cosmic brownies are disgusting.

My family shopped at ALDIs the other week and we got “Cosmic Brownies” I tried one and it was disgusting, I don’t think they’ve been touched ever since.

I honestly don't know how it's possible for one man to have so many amazing off-the-cuff one-liners in every episode. You told me that everyone loves Little Debbie so much that even the cardboard can't let go of the Swiss Roll. You have to understand that's the funniest thing anyone's ever said about Swiss Rolls or Little Debbie, but it's just like a thing you think and say. Unreal.
Was really interested in the honey bun results because I recently got the Great Value honey buns on impulse and they were decent. Also, I've never seen a Little Debbie come off the cardboard cleanly no matter how hard I've tried to do it.
I've experienced it, but only after freezing. If you don't freeze it, you're licking cardboard. And that's a guarantee.

Spent 15 years in a food factory. We did name brand and store brand products. Difference could be quality of packaging, thickness of sauce, amount of toppings/ingredients....it just depended on what the company wanted. What we made you couldn't tell much of a difference in flavor but it was there. Other products, ya....definite difference. I miss Little Debbie snacks. My body doesn't like them anymore, grrrr. Nutty Buddies 4-eva!

i have a dairy allergy & haven't been able to eat little debbie in almost a decade, i could STILL tell each of them apart just visually. little debbie just makes that quality & distinct of a product.
Don't worry, there is no dairy in Little Debbie. There are no actual real ingredients at all, for that matter.
Is there any dairy in those things ?

A DG tri-county rep was our neighbor and told us there are a few Clover Valley cookies made by same place as Girl Scout cookies.

@@ritasmith9553 We have 10 DG in our county hahaha and some carry different things than others. I know at my closest DG they have their version of the peanut butter ones covered in chocolate (Tagalongs?) and the coconut ones with the chocolate drizzle (idk the Girl Scout name, can’t remember)
But I could go across town and find different ones.

Clover Valley Chunky Chocolate chips are like half the price of Chips Ahoy, and they blow chips ahoy out of the water. On the other hand, I bought a can of Clover Valley coffee, and the first time I made it I kept smelling diesel fuel and thought Id gotten some on my clothes in my workshop. Then I tasted the coffee. Only time in my life I poured out fresh coffee and threw the entire can into the trash. Clover Valley seems to be either outstandingly excellent or sucks the labels off of baseball bats.
@@corbinhbucknerjr558 The Clover Valley creamer isn’t good either. Good to know about the coffee. I won’t try it. We use Founding Fathers coffee that we get at a farm store in town. We get 80 pods for $20. Wish they carried the ground coffee bc I can drink a whole pot.

Totally agree with Matt on the Swiss Rolls. Never had one that didn't make me go after the chocolate on the cardboard.
I LOVED the comment that tastes like Dollar General smells! I can not tolerate that horrible chemical smell inside of Dollar General AND Family Dollar. Literally makes me sick even wearing a mask. I go VERY seldom, only when I need something that I can't get anywhere else. And yes, some of those cheap snacks do taste like chemicals to me.
It's not the chemicals in cheap snacks, it's the odors of the store penetrating the food. I once bought a box of name brand Reeses pieces from a dollar general, and it smelled like the store. And DG doesn't smell unlike any other store smells.
What? You can smell it through wearing a mask? That would mean masks are ineffective and the news told me they were ! What am I to believe?

My wife and I were in our 30's (when we lived- briefly- in the NYC area) when we had our first encounter with Little Debbie. She's from Hawai'i, and I'm from Orygun (how it's said, not how it's spelled). But watching your stunning documentary, we both realized that we had the same experience, but with Hostess. And yeah, we both could pass any comparison test with the generic stuff. Of course nowadays we've moved to lower Alabama, and know how to engage in serious arguments regarding Conecuh, and Mardi Gras (heading to Dauphin Island for their parade tomorrow)… but I suppose our pre-diabetic allegiance will always be with the Hostess treats of the early 1960's (yeah, we're old farts). Even so, we get it. We hear you. And we KNOW.
Don’t know how old you are, but I’m from Oregon and in my late 40’s and have had Little Debbie’s my whole life. Mainly because Little Debbie’s are vegetarian and Hostess is not.

Not much of a challenge for an expert such as yourself. There's a reason Great Value hasn't tried to replicate the Fudge Round - It's one of a kind and is the king of the Little Debbies.

Hi, this was a great video. Little Debbie snacks are amazing. I admit that I eat the Great Value homages sometimes but Little Debbie rules.

Even as someone who only got Little Debbie snacks as a treat from school or at a friends house/lunch trade - as SOON as the swiss rolls came out I was like "no residue, not LD". I don't know why it's such a visceral memory for me, just maybe one of those dumb kid mind games you have with some snacks. Scraping the cardboard for that last bit is just an iconic moment lol
Girl Scout Cookies vs Store Bought?! Aldi's peanut butter fudge cookies are as good as, if not better than GS Tagalongs for a fraction of the cost!

I love some little Debbie but I will say the GV honey bun is much better. Debbie just has a strange taste. That's just me and I grew up on little Debbie when a box has 12 and cost less then $1

…so I finally got to visit a Dollar General the other day cause I was staying in a small town - was so excited to see one and visit. Prices were shocking though, nothing was a dollar and things I got were about 30% more than big city stores.
