x-men is one of the biggest part of marvel, up until the avengers movies came out, this team AND fantastic four were the biggest teams in the comics. The basic x-men comics throughout the decades evolved into countless comic titles, so it isn't just x-men but x-force, x-factor, wolverine, new mutants, hellions, generation x, ETC ETC, the number of comic titles focusing on mutants/x-men characters are possibly even in the hundreds. The movies get a lot of things wrong, mostly the characters, their personality, who they are, because that is the x-men. While the avengers comics mostly focused on just teamwork, superhero stuff, stopping large threats, the x-men mostly focuses on characters, acceptance, co-existence and representation. While the movies got a lot of these things wrong, because the studio mainly focused just on the variety of the powers and putting in big actors, every x-men animated series PERFECTLY adapts the comics, the character's personalities and the family that the x-men are.
Logan's natural mutant abilities are that he has hyper senses, the hand claws, and the fast healing. If I remember correctly, those are three separate mutations that just happened to all appear in his genetics. The hyper senses are why he sniffs throughout the movie, and how he knew immediately and with certainty that Storm was actually Mystique. If Storm smells like Mystique instead of Storm then he knows His indestructible adamantium coated skeleton is what was added when he was experimented on. An interesting side note, the adamantium metal is poisonous inside of him, constantly poisoning him, but at the same time his healing factor is counteracting it. So his healing factor is overworked and never keeping the rest of his body as healthy as it could, which is why he started aging at a pretty natural rate once he got the adamantium. Without his own skeleton poisoning him, he would live much, much longer, potentially forever, and his healing abilities would be even more powerful than they already are
OMG YES!!! The X-Men mean so much to me, the comics, the adaptations for media. Literally anyone who is marginalized can find inspiration and substance in their allegories. As someone who is queer, the queer allegory has always been so important to me. I'll never forget that in the comics in the 90's some of the writers wanted to do a storyline about the AIDS crisis and when they were told no they did an allegorical story about it. The X-Men are just *really* something special.
I appreciate that part in X-2 where Mystique demonstrates to Nightcrawler that she can perfectly replicate anyone’s voice. He knows she can shape shift and he cannot. They’re both naturally, physically unattractive to most of society and have been feared bc of it too. He then asks her why doesn’t she always just stay shape shifted/disguised from her true form all the time to look like a regular person so she can avoid all the pain she gets from society just for who she is and looks like. She replies, 'because we shouldn’t have to' (hide our true selves to be treated like everyone else). I always loved her response to that question, with RR’s sexy self delivering it 💙
A 24 year old movie with themes that still hold up well today. Xavier and Magneto are very different than typical heroes and villains they both want their kind to live and prosper but go about it on completely different ways. Xavier wants co-existence between mutants and humans he is the optimist the idealist. Magneto is the jaded cynic he only sees survivor through show of strength and if mutants survive he will gladly wipe out the humans for it. Their ideologies also extend to their respective teams. The X-men are Xavier’s children his family and they work as a team. Contrasts with the Brotherhood who only seek yo follow Magneto’s will even the way they fight the X-men fight together against one of Magneto’s underlings. Yeah Wolverine was the star despite the movie being an ensemble. Funny thing Hugh Jackman was not considered the main pick for the role since at the time he wasn’t physically fit but now its hard to think anyone else could be Wolverine. Back then when I first saw this movie I didn’t think much of Cyclops but now knowing what I know as a comic fan they really did Scott dirty.
“How did you do that? How did you know?” Aside from the claws and healing, Wolverine’s got high smelling senses just like a dog. He can track what someone’s hiding or where someone is.
Simple way to think about the two sides of the argument. Magneto- Malcolm X, Xiaver- Martin Luther King Jr. As the comics developed, writers began to model them after these two because they both wanted what was best for their people, but believed in different ways of achieving that goal. Xiaver is an idealist who believes in humanity's ability for good and acceptance, while Magneto is a realist who experienced the worst of humanity.
Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were originally mutants and children of Magneto, but when Marvel lost the rights to Fox they were changed for MCU synergy. That’s why in the MCU Wanda and Pietro were never called Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, and that’s why both volunteered to undergo genetic experimentation for their powers.
Wolverine has enhanced senses as well as superhearing, he basically has a canine level sense of smell. That's why he was able to figure out that it was Mystique disguised as Storm and not actually Storm. Also, Cyclops' line about yellow spandex was a nod to the iconic costume Wolverine wears in the comics.
These movies really take a bias with Wolverine, and while they’re enjoyable, once you see other X-Men medias besides these Fox movies, you’ll see the other X-Men members used to their fullest potential. Glad you’re starting this journey though, easily my favorite super hero team.
Fun fact- X-Men were created during the period of segregation in America. Magneto and Professor Xavier’s conflicting views of resolving mutant prejudice was inspired heavily by the conflicting ideals of Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X.
excited we all are for meg to be reacting to the x-men movies, let's try not to spoil what is to happen in the future films f we can help it. much better when meg is surprised a lot of us will agree yes ^_^
Mutations are mostly random, but their are some cases where there is a certain mutations that can runs through a bloodline that can be similar in nature or evolve through generations, or I some cases a power can be directly passed down. Like in the comics, Cyclops has 2 younger brothers that also have energy based abilities. Cyclops has concussive optic blasts, Havok can emit energy waves of plasma from his body, and Vulcan, the youngest brother can manipulate, control and absorb vast amounts of energy.
I'm glad you enjoyed this movie! It's a great introduction to newcomers and sets up the general premise of the X-Men. It's not perfect, but it works! I also highly recommend two animated shows for you if you're interested. One is "X-Men: The Animated Series" from the 90s. The recent X-Men '97 is actually a continuation from it! And the second is "X-Men: Evolution" which I think you would like! Basically Charles, Storm, and Logan are the only adults. Everyone else are teenagers and it shows them having to juggle being X-Men while also dealing with teenage issues and trying to fit in with normal kids. It was my first introduction to the X-Men and it's really good!
Jennifer Lawrence actively refused to wear the make up for her transformation which is funny because it's the exact opposite of how her character is supposed to be proud to be a mutant. It's even funnier because Rebecca Stamos, who played her in the original movies, loved the make up and was always willing to show it off whenever possible so by default she's a better Mystique than Jennifer.
Great reaction Meg. Glad you enjoyed it. Hugh Jackman did amazing in the role of Logan. Wolverine is older than Charles. He fought in several wars in history...he is solider. As a fellow veteran myself. I can understand Logan's views pretty well. Logan saw the horrors of war and after he was implanted with adamantine metal...the government viewed him as a weapon of war. He always felt this burden as soldiers often do, but even though he feels like all he is viewed like is a weapon. Charles helps him see that he is man to and deserves to be happy and needs to remember his past. Logan has a moral compass and is a man of principle and does his best to protect people as he was as solider. This is what makes Logan a hero and X-Men even though he is more of loner. Because realistically who can understand everything Logan really has gone through as he lived many lifetimes. If you get the chance Meg you can watch them all but honestly if you want more on Logan...Watch the movie Logan. It is amazing movie.
Sir Ian McKellen as Magnito is just perfect imo. As they have Patrick Stewart as Prof X just shows that they used too know what actor too play what roles.
So glad you are watching the X-men series!!! Just bear in mind, the sets of movies are quite fast and loose with the timeline. Things we not make perfect sense.
In Marvel, Mutants are derived from genetic mutations, Mutates are humans that are altered by other factors. Also, you mentioned that Scarlet Witch is a mutant, but that is something that is different from the comics to the MCU. At this point in the MCU the explanation for Scarlet Witch's powers is that she was altered by the Mind Stone. Its possible they could reveal in a future movies that she is also a mutant, but we'll have to wait and see.
"Why is she here?" There is a lot in the comics that has been cut out of the movies (time and space considerations). Rogue left home and was with Caliban in the sewers of New York for years. Then Caliban said "There's somebody up in Canada that can endure your presence." Now this could have been a lot of people (Romulus, Wild Child, Sabertooth, Tundra ect.) but it just so happened it was Logan she ran into.
So this movie franchise does its own thing with rouge specifically. If you watch or read more material just be aware because when I did rouge REALLY confused me
Sabretooth is played by former pro wrestler Tyler Mane. He also played Michael Myers in the Rob Zombie remakes of Halloween. Also, Magneto refers to mutants as 'Homo Superior'. He sees mutants as an evolved species, and superior to humans.
44:01 I don’t think Magneto knew the extent of his healing factor in that he couldn’t die. Wolverine was extremely hesitant as well so I bet even he didn’t know that he could come back to life (post memory wipe at least).
The producers asked Joss Whedon, the creator of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, the task of adding to the script. They kept only two of his lines... and they're the best lines in the movie: Storm "Do you know what happens to a toad that's struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else." and Wolverine/Cyclops "You're a dick/Okay".
The movie is a good way to introduce the concept of X-Men. That said it only introduces the BASIC concept of it. All the movies take liberties with the source material. If you actually want to watch a comic accurate take then the 1990s animated series is still the best one.
For me I found X-Men through the comics in the 80s, they were my first real comic book love. I think generally their villains are better than the average Avenger villain because so often they have a reason for doing what they are doing and it is almost never about money. (that does not mean their are not bad ones because comics but there are so many more interesting ones. Magneto hates humanity driven by the holocaust, and so he is a compelling person because his whole concept is to protect Mutants against Humanity "by any means necessary" He is not some rich guy just wanting to gain more money or power. The fact that he is the flip side of Charles in opinion makes him stand out even more. I also like the story of the X-Men, a group based on fighting against discrimination and hatred by saving those that despise them which they have to do in order to be heroes. They have always been very interesting. X-Men series is a complicated one with ups and downs but some of them are my favourite super hero movies.
Some of Logan's mutant abilities include a heightened sense of smell, so if he doesn't detect your distinct scent, he'll know it's not really you, and in that case ... SNIKT! If you watch some scenes again, you can clearly see him sniff the air, probably looking to sense if somethings off. That's why he stabbed Mystique: he knew she was mimicking Storm.
I’m so mad I missed this on Patreon, glad I got it now. Recommend checking out X-Men either on Marvel Unlimited or in Epic Collections if you want to read more. And if you missed the analogy, think of it this way - think of the mutant cause as civil rights in the 1960s. Magneto’s point of view is analogous to Malcom X, Charles’s is analogous to Martin Luther King Jr. Just depends on your perspective who is right - aggressive resistance or passive resistance.
The biggest thing to me is the film makers really understood what the X-men were about especially for the first two films even if in other ways the deviated from the comics.
You might like The Nevers. It's like the X-Men, but set in Victorian England. It's only ten episodes and everything is pretty much wrapped up by the end.
Interestingly, Rogue's struggled for a very long time with her powers but, and i might be misremembering, i believe at one point it was confirmed that her powers activating and sending that boy into a coma during their kiss traumatized her and her subconscious put her powers into "always on" mode to prevent it from happening again. Once that became clear, Xavier (?) Helped her process and deal with the trauma which allowed her to not only turn her powers off but begin learning control, such as only borrowing a mutant's powers without draining life force etc.
at the start of filming, Hugh Jackman wasn't quite jacked enough for any shirtless scenes, so the cage match was filmed last, and the part where the Professor was whispering in to Logans mind was filmed at certain angles so you wouldn't notice a lack of muscle.
Howdy- I had a feeling you’d love this. These fox xmen films are a great primer and they keep true to each character’s power sets and *some* of their individual lore. (Cyclops is actually a great character in the comics! And Jean and storm aren’t background characters! ) But the reboot to the 90’s animated series is called xmen 97 - it came out this year, and is absolutely Incredible and I’m POSITIVE you’ll love it-and it’s so so faithful to the big bold storylines from the xmen comics that these movies kinda fumbled thru without nearly as much fun. Excited that you’re enjoying this world
I hope that if you go through more of the X-Men media, you eventually give chance to X-Men the animated series, but especially the new X-Men 97 animated show. Its a masterpiece.

8:25 Fun fact: This is George Buza who plays Beast in X-Men The Animated Series & X-Men '97!
If Storm smells like Mystique instead of Storm then he knows
His indestructible adamantium coated skeleton is what was added when he was experimented on.
I always loved her response to that question, with RR’s sexy self delivering it 💙
If you think Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique was hot wait till you see Rebecca Romijn.
YYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!! Welcome to one of the greatest comic book properties of all times.
Back then when I first saw this movie I didn’t think much of Cyclops but now knowing what I know as a comic fan they really did Scott dirty.
if you liked this you will LOVE X-Men '97 (it's a sequel of X-Men The Animated Series)
Happy Spring👍
Logan was able to figure out Storm was Mystique because he has very heightened senses and had her scent.
Many of your questions will be answered in X2 ^^
I was wondering if you'd ever get into X-Men, glad to see a start for another journey
Your reaction to Wolverine "proving" himself to Cyclops mirrored mine... I was like "Yup, that'll work."
excited we all are for meg to be reacting to the x-men movies, let's try not to spoil what is to happen in the future films f we can help it. much better when meg is surprised a lot of us will agree yes ^_^
Holy s**t, I’m so excited for you to watch this series!
Yaayyy!! Love all your reactions!
41:15 me too 41:19 yes, she did kill toad.
"Who's the director??" We don't need to get into that 😬
Mutations are mostly random, but their are some cases where there is a certain mutations that can runs through a bloodline that can be similar in nature or evolve through generations, or I some cases a power can be directly passed down.
Oh, I didn't know you lived in Brazil for a while, that's cool! Hope you enjoyed your stay!
I looooooooved Brazil!!!
I do believe this was my first comic book film I ever watched. And it feels appropriate, since X-Men are without a doubt the best of Marvel.
He knew it was Mystique because he also has very heightened senses. He could smell it wasn’t her.
Oh hell yeah! I am so here for your X-Men journey!
wolverine and Sabertooth have animal abilities like their strong sense of smell. that's how Wolverine knew Mystique was around, he was sniffing
I’ve read somewhere that Xavier/Magneto dynamic was based on MLK/Malcom X
Sir Ian McKellen as Magnito is just perfect imo. As they have Patrick Stewart as Prof X just shows that they used too know what actor too play what roles.
So glad you are watching the X-men series!!! Just bear in mind, the sets of movies are quite fast and loose with the timeline. Things we not make perfect sense.
The traumatic surgery on Logan only coated his skeleton with Adamantium, which means that he had bone claws before his Adamantium claws.
The fact that the J-Law/Mystique "Bloo-bies" connection never happened makes me very sad lmao
Wolverine has a heightened sense of smell. That's how he knew "Stoem" was actually Mystique.
So this movie franchise does its own thing with rouge specifically. If you watch or read more material just be aware because when I did rouge REALLY confused me
rouge remembers everything she touches, takes on some of their memories
Sabretooth is played by former pro wrestler Tyler Mane. He also played Michael Myers in the Rob Zombie remakes of Halloween.
Also, Magneto refers to mutants as 'Homo Superior'. He sees mutants as an evolved species, and superior to humans.
Saw this in the theatre :) It was surreal to see the comics I had grown up reading and then seeing them on the big screen :)
LETS GOOO!! 💪😎💪
In the comics "Homo sapiens" refers to regular humans, while mutants are sometimes referred to (usually by people like Magneto) as "Homo superior".
Mutant (Homo Superior)
--- X-Men
--- Brotherhood of Mutants
--- Morlocks (Not really shown in the movies)
The movie is a good way to introduce the concept of X-Men. That said it only introduces the BASIC concept of it. All the movies take liberties with the source material. If you actually want to watch a comic accurate take then the 1990s animated series is still the best one.
I can safely say you have a monopoly on reactions where the reactor says "Yeah I'd smash Professor X".
Disappointed in humanity ngl.
I doubt it will ever be addressed in the movie series, but Magneto is traditionally the biological father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.
I went 😬😬 when u said that Logan is like a father to Rogue like nooo she has a crush on him 😂
The biggest thing to me is the film makers really understood what the X-men were about especially for the first two films even if in other ways the deviated from the comics.
Wolverine Weapon X is the top pick for Wolverine's origin story in the comics :)
Another X-cellent reaction, Meg...sorry, couldn't resist...!!!
(Here's hoping for some more pre-MCU Marvel reactions like the 2003 Hulk movie, the two mid-2000s Fantastic Four movies, and especially the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, yes...?).
