Fun fact for the holiday season, Santa Claus navigates all of Apokolips destructive forces to personally deliver Darkseid a piece of coal every Christmas!
They didn't bring it up in the movie, nor does it come up in any of the others, but Barda's husband who didn't appear in the story is Darkseid's adopted son who was swapped with Orion. In most versions of the story they defected from Apokolips together.
Scott Free!
Yep, Scott Free/ Mr Miracle
Would've been nice if he was in this movie and showing his romantic interactions with Barda.
i love how kara and clark relate to different immigrant/refugee experiences. clark was never able to know krypton before he left it, but kara did. theyre both mourning krypton in very different ways
Superman mirrors second generation's immigrants. They grew up in America but their hometown is in other countries. They inherited some culture but still lacks connections. Their struggles is more how to fit in America and still inherited their culture.
Supergirl is typical first generation immigrant. In reality, those people left their hometown, but found out everything is new to them. They need to rebuild their life in a new society, and feel extremely lonely because living habits, culture, and so many things are different from the place they grew up. There will always be a part of them missing the environment they grew up and might shut down themselves for insecurity.
RIP Andre Braugher as he did an amazing job as Darkseid and sounded so menacing as the character. I also LOVED him as Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine Nine which is pne of my favourite comedy shows.
Big Barda was actually a former Female Furies and, in fact, she was the leader of the Furies under Granny's dominion. Big Barda actually chose to escape Apokalips with her lover Scott Free, who is a superhero called Mister Miracle (you can actually see his costume in Big Barda's wardrobe) who is actually the son of High Father from New Genesis and as part of the peace treaty from both planets Scott was the one who was exchanged along with Orion as Orion was Darkseid's son but raised by High Father. In contrast, Scott was High Father's son but raised by Darkseid. Both Big Barda and Scott Free/Mister Miracle had brutal trauma under Darkseid's dominion and fell in love as they both escaped Apokalips and built a life together on Earth as heroes. Id highly recommend you read Tom King's phenomenal Mister Miracle graphic novel as it has to be one of the most introspective and nuanced comic stories Ive read about such an underrated character. Seriously that comic is a masterpiece.
I really love how they depicted the DC Trinity's team dynamic. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are such close friends, acting like brothers and sisters who care about each other.
BTW that final fight scene on the Kent farm between Superman, Supergirl and Darkseid has to be one of the best-animated fight scenes Ive seen in any DC animated movie or show. Frankly this whole movie has some of the best fight choreography Ive seen from a DC animated movie especially with WW and Barda's fight against the Furies
Supergirl has been written out and rebooted many times in the comics, each time different from the last, and the on-screen portrayals follow that same pattern. There really isn't any one widely accepted "correct" interpretation of Supergirl and her origin. The only constant (or near-constant) is pretty much that, unlike Superman, she was old enough when she lost everything that she remembers it. That makes her a very different immigrant story than Superman.
_"The only constant (or near-constant) is pretty much that, unlike Superman, she was old enough when she lost everything that she remembers it."_
Well, no, the Classic story was she was on Earth and could (when circumstances allowed) go to Argo City and visit her parents. I don't think she was really tragic until post-Crisis.
Especially with My Adventures With Superman.
There are different versions of Supergirl with different origins from different stories.
This is my personal favorite, the real Post-Crisis Kara.
@@cahe6161 I'm quite fond of some of the choices with this version. Especially the fact that she arrives not speaking English.
You know Batman's a badass when even Darkseid shows respect toward him.
Darkseid doesn't love granny, he's not capable of feeling love, he could've cloned Kara, and it would've been easier, but he specifically wants to break her spirit and use her against her family because that would hurt both of them the most, all the factories and slave labor and terrible machines on Apokolips don't produce anything, they're there exclusively for the sake of harm, torture, and suffering, Darkseid is not just an evil person, Darkseid IS evil, personified, he can never be truly, fully beaten, only kept at bay
Well.... Darkseid was actually capable of feeling love..... once. There was a resident on Apokolips, a wise and beautiful scientist and sorceress of Apokolips named Suli whom Darkseid took a liking too for her calm and patient nature. They married in secret and she birthed their son that is Kalibak. Darkseid even started to question his ambitions to conquer the universe all due to his beloved wife. Yet, Darkseid's mother, Heggra, was displeased of learning of Suli when she already arranged Darkseid to marry another Apkolips resident that is Tigra (mother of Orion). And so, she ordered Desaad to kill Suli by poisoning her which broke Darkseid's heart and sent him back to the path of conquering the universe... as he than ordered Desaad to poison Heggra as a sort of revenge for his Suli. Darkseid never felt love again ever since.
@@CB-eo6xo if i remember right i think people tend to frame that as like, before he truly became darkseid, but i could be wrong
@@maggiegermann1724 This was around during the early days right after Uxas became Darkseid. The death of Suli has truly molded Darkseid into the evil monster that he is now.
5:05 Because she looks like a supervillain.
A person with powers blowing up cars and just standing in the middle of the road waiting to be hit by a car? Sounds like a villain.
People wouldn’t assume that’s it’s someone not from Earth that doesn’t know what a road is.
Any time cops see someone using powers and blowing things up randomly, it’s almost always a criminal on a rampage.
As for Batman: innocent or not, she is putting people in danger accidentally. He’s gotta deal with it.
37:07 Killing wouldn’t solve anything. He’s a god that’s using an inferior version of himself to interact with the universe.
So you would be killing a puppet.
The way Superman has a cousin known as Supergirl. Batman has a lesbian cousin known as Kate Kane aka Batwoman.
Well, she was recently made a cousin. And in my opinion this is an unnecessary retcon.
@ cw didnt work with her that well at all but James Gunn and Peter safran can in their dcu
@@mallus1313How "recent" is recent, because I'm pretty sure Kate has been Bruce's cousin for at least 20 whole years😅
seeing how much Kara spent on shopping and the property damage of both Bruce's computer and The Kent farm, I think Clark will be applying for a loan.
With his luck‚ the loan will be from a bank that Bruce owns.
@@bubbles784 I can only imagine the interest rate that will be added for Bruce's computer.
Realistically Superman could just ask Star Labs for an "advance payment" for some future task or have a standing deal with some power company where he sets the toughest turbine made spinning like the Wheel of Fortune five times a week ("Metropolis gets some clean energy, I get some money in case of superhero emergencies.")
@@akbarlakhani6624Bruce would probably make the interest rate 100% just screw with him lol
Diana wrapping that lash around her leg and stomping it down was the most original move I've ever seen in an animated fight sequence.
Batman's introduction to Kara was literally her lasering people how is he supposed to react to that? Is he supposed to slap her on the ass and be like "Hi, welcome to Gotham City, here's the nearby McDonald's and mall". No of course he isn't going to trust her right away why the hell would he? Also she torched his computer I don't blame him for not liking her. I'm Team Batman all the way.
No Darkseid doesn't love granny, shes a loyal underling, thats all he see's her as. To my knowledge Darkseid only ever loved Orions birth mother. Even that is debatable, Darkseid doesn't really love anyone. He's the living embodiment of tyranny and opression. He only desires to subjugate all life to his whims, he seeks the Antlife equation because it is a formula that proves free will is meaningless and would give him the power to enslave all who see it.
I mean, now i'm wondering how Darkseid would show love, I can't imagine what his idea of a Valentine's Card would be like.
@Kaltagstar96 I'd imagine not treating you like a disposable lackey is the clearest sign.
It was Kalabak mom not Orion
Darkseid is not a person, he is an entity, his only desire is to dominate all life, he is immortal so it's not like they can kill him. It's all that they can do to send him packing, that's why it's always like that because they can't kill him, they probably would if they could.
Now you need to see the other Super Girl orgin movie.... Superman Unbound
...Yes, yes, yes, I was about to suggest that movie too! 😅
Why does everyone thinks Superman is poor? He can squeeze coal and turn it into diamonds.
Doomsday clones were a failed experiment. That’s why they were so weak.
_"He can squeeze coal and turn it into diamonds."_
That's the Silver Age version, I think realistically the coal would just seep through his fingers.
@ if he can contain a blast from Zoom bomb in Flashpoint, it shouldn’t be a problem
He can but that doesn’t mean that he does. Even aside from the practical issues of Clark having to explain where he keeps getting diamonds from various versions of Superman would view that as an abuse of his powers.
@ I imagine at least some bank would be willing to open a bank account for Superman or if it doesn’t work he might just do transactions in cash. I do not believe he has no use for money while super heroing.
@@georgesmith6218 Eh again ignoring the moral concerns Superman may have there’s still a laundry list of practical ones.
Even if there was a bank willing to take on the extreme risk of managing Superman’s account he can’t exactly transfer that money to Clark without things being suspicious.
There’s really nothing that Superman would have to spend money on. Clark obviously does but he has a job.
"How do you get rid of him?"
That's the neat thing.... You don't. You can't get rid of Darkseid because he's never really there. There is only one Darkseid and every seemingly different one we see in every universe is just a small aspect of the true Darkseid
That's some modern retcon bs.
I can't wait for meg to see Bruce interact with Damien
First off, Darkseid wasn't talking about Batman directly when he said, "you kill your own kind to win battles. An admirable quality". He was talking about humans in general. Also, YES you definitely should watch Smallville. It's pretty much the best superhero tv show ever made.
Summer Glau is a fun and perfect Supergirl, I love the animation style, definitely one of the underrated Animated flicks
I didn't know that was her. Cool.
@ Yeah, it’s always dope to see her appear in things, she’s a lot of fun
I recommend the CW series Superman & Lois. Now that the series has come to an end, I very much recommend it to be the best time to see it now. It's not connected to the Arrowverse as it's in their own separate universe, so you don't have to see those shows to understand what is happening. It's like the DC version of This is Us but with the kent family.
It is very telling of how incompetant gotham PD is when they arrest guys like the joker who commit mass genocide but immediately open fire on a confused unarmed teenager.
I am reminded of the Justice League Animated series where Brainiac and Darkseid team up, and Clark is willing to sacrifice himself to take Darkseid out, but is stopped by Batman. Clark glares at him and reminds him, "You know, you're not always right." - Superman: TAS and Justice League Animated had the great Michael Ironside as Darkseid.
This is my favorite Darkseid. Rip Andre Braugher.
By time you reacted to this, was waiting for this moment. Kara Zor-El/Supergirl is an important character in DC, she's one of my faves in that note as well, this is defo one of DC's best Animated movies, introduces Supergirl/Kara Zor-El to new viewers as well who don't really read comics.
Reacted to your last video as well, the Little Lost Girl episode from STAS, seems you're already a fan of Kara as a whole, lmao, albeit that version of Kara is Kara In-Ze, this version in the movie is Kara Zor-El, the original we all know today
The funny part of the "On a reporter's salary" is - Bruce is the one signing Clark's paycheques. He owns the Daily Planet.
Krypto was a G in this movie. Bro saw Kara and was Immedeatley like "Nah, this fortress ain't big enough for the both of us. Away - Blondie!"
Is that still cannon in the comics, Bruce owning the Daily planet? It was true when I stopped reading comics a thousand years ago.
@@circa81it was canon around the time this movie was made so, I’d wager it’s canon here.
37:46 A lot of the movie is drastically changed from the comic arc in the Superman/Batman series. For instance during the arc it's constantly brought up that Kara is stronger than Clark by both Batman and Wonder Woman which was one of the factors that interested Darkseid however during their fight on Apokolips Clark reveals to Kara she isn't stronger than him she just doesn't know how to control her power.
Clark also technically kills Darkseid in this arc. When Darkseid attacks Kara and him on Earth Clark is convinced Darkseid killed Kara and becomes so enraged he beats Darkseid to near death. However knowing he can't permanently kill Darkseid in that fashion he drags him to the end of existence where the source wall(the grave of dead gods more or less) is located and throws him into it. It becomes a big thing in a later arc that they require Darkseid's assistance so Superman I believe with the help of other new gods has to go free Darkseid.
The Wonder Woman/Barda vs. Furies fight is one of the best DC’s ever done.
18:21 the skills/powers of Superman have an unknown limit since it comes from our yellow star so although he shows a lot of them, there's plenty we don't know yet
Darkseid has no love in even one cell of his body.
Hey now, Suli made him mellow so that can't literally be true.
He was capable of love once but never had since the death of his beloved Suli.
Hey Meg! I love your batman and superman reactions!
I👏 have👏 been👏 waiting👏
For any reaction channel to view this one. This is probably one of my favorites of the animated films.
The ither ine you should see us superman: unbound. Its really good as well.
So Argo is another city of Krypton where Kara was born and raised. While Clark/Kal was originally born in Kandor City the Capital of Krypton.
Kal was raised in Kryptonopolis. It became the capital city after Kandor was taken by Brainiac before Krypton exploded.
@ That’s right. Completely forgot that it was the second capital after kandor was abducted and where Kal was said born. Thanks for the reminder lol.
Great Reaction Lady👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🔥🔥😁 This is my favorite DC Animated Movie!
Batman racist against Kryptonians.
And reminder like with this, Superman the Animated Series and Especially with My Adventures With Superman,
There are different versions of Supergirl with different origins from different stories.
SUPERMAN/SHAZAM : the return of black adam
Yes please!
😊Hey Meg... I think i know what i and everyone else is thinking since you're now familiar with Supergirl and Brainiac, so... SUPERMAN UNBOUND!😊
By the way, this movie is straight adaptations from Jeph Loeb's “Supergirl from Krypton” comics. It was the first time Supergirl/Kara Zor-El reintroduced after Crisis on Infinite Earths. So basically this storyline is modern Supergirl's definitive origin. It defined modern Supergirl's characteristic.
If Superman mirrors second generation's immigrants, that always feel outsiders among others, Supergirl is kind of like first generation immigrants. Left her home, couldn't associate with society, didn't know her position and identity. She is "Super"girl but faces same problems of many immigrants, many people can relate her struggles, and that's called a great characteristic design.
For more Superman, watch SUPERMAN AND LOIS! Superman and Lois are married with 2 boys and it's incredible
A good stand alone movie but I feel it makes for a sequel to ‘public enemies’ since both movies were based off the same comic.
In many ways this version of Kara is a blend of both good qualities of Superman and Batman she’s has that struggle as an outsider trying to find her place but she’s got repressed anger and grit from loss like Batman.
Barda was once a member of Darkseid’s army and being the former leader of the Furies you know she’s a very strong warrior. Afterwards her husband Mister Miracle convinced her to changer her ways and they became the prime example of a married superhero couple.
Darkseid again is a deceitful manipulative tyrant. But despite that he does respect strength, intelligence and ruthlessness something Batman showed and earned his approval.
We have seen Barda in the animated series, she was among the army of new gods that showed up to confront Darkseid at Orion's behest in 'Apocalypse now', a shame she never appears much in the DCAU outside of several cameos and only has a major role in three episodes.
It is not stated here but she and Granny have a blood feud going on. Barda's mother Breeda, and Granny were sisters of a sort, right until Granny betrayed her to Darkseid which led to her death.
Lashina: The one with the spiked whip.
Mad Hariet: The one with the green hair, claws, and teeth.
Stompa: The muscular one.
Gillotina: The blonde with the blades.
The first three of the Furies here were seen before from your last Superman animated series episode.
And as said before, Darkseid doesn't love Granny Goodness. She's just a very loyal minion in his inner circle of Apokolips.
in the comics, when Kara finally becomes Supergirl and talks to people, the people she talks to are plenty of other superheroes such as Nightwing, Martian Manhunter, Power Girl and etc, instead of the Amazons. So I thought it was a shame, but there were probably many good reasons(mostly legal) why they had to change that scene.
For your issue around 14:10, I think you should remember that there is a very real possibility in the DC Universe of a supervillain randomly attacking in broad daylight, and if Kara happened to have been there during an attack she very well could've killed the supervillain _and_ every civilian in the vicinity.
Bruce and Diana's ambush isn't really unfair given how it's a relatively common scenario, especially if Kara lives in major cities like Metropolis or (god forbid) Gotham. Was it rude to spring it on Clark, especially knowing how desperate he was to keep Kara safe? Yes. But it proved that Kara needs more control if she's to live a normal life on Earth.
I hope you get around to watching My Adventures with Superman. I love its version of Supergirl as well.
oof didnt know they introduced Supergirl. I'm behind :/
"Shoots laser eyes at people"
"Why don't people help her"
Hi Meg hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
God smallville as show is like apple pie! It such a good show and so wholesome and sweet! Like the family dynamics between the Kent family is really the idealic family. You can see how Clark Kent was raised to be Superman by these incredible parents who loved an orphaned baby.
I'm really glad you posted this, because you're the first person I've seen react to this movie. I love it so much!
Whenever you take time to watch Smallville, be patient with it. It is a very slow burn show, but seeing Clark at his youth is worth it.
I would recommend watching Smallville it's a fun and corny show. But I would highly recommend Justice League Unlimited from 2004 there are great stories throughout the series and the series final has one of the best Darkseid fights that you will love to watch over and over
Thanks for the great reaction Meg! If you’re looking for fun Supergirl stories I’d recommend the animated film “Superman Unbound” the Supergirl tv series and “My Adventures With Superman” season 2. Some good Supergirl comics include the Last Daughter of Krypton arc, the Crucible arc and the mini series Cosmic Adventures in the 8th Grade.
@ the Doom Patrol wasn’t a CW show. Supergirl had it’s ups & downs but it was still pretty fun, especially in the early seasons.
Superman unbound is a bad movie.
@@realkosherpork9223 to each their own. I enjoyed it.
You gotta watch Smallville. It’s great. Started all the CW shows. The OG.
This batman design its on of the scariest design of him hand down.
She really needs to watch superman and Lois
The animation in this is damn smooth. Wonder Woman vs the Furies is especially good.
Summer Glau who played River Tam in Firefly and Cameron in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles voices Kara/Supergirl
13:52. That's exactly why I have a lot of problems with many iterations of Wonder Woman. Even in good versions, she acts like so high and mighty. In DCAU, she is also ridiculous mean to Hawkgirl. I know she is in good side but I always got the impression that I can't even reason with her. She will punch your face if you say no. And she won't explain to you just straightforward telling you that you are wrong.
If we compare with Batman, who is famous for not being friendly, he might be jerk and say some hurtful things to Kara, but he always has a rational reason behind it. In many iterations we know he is not the type of person to be friendly but we totally understand his point.
But Wonder Woman is like "I don't need to explain to you, I'm right, you are wrong. Get out of my way or I punch you."
Yeah, I don't know why this story decided to write wonder woman and the amazons like that...
Nice vids love you queen ✨♥️💎😍😍😍💜💜💜💜💜
I highly recommend watching the James Bond films, I think you will enjoy them
I think Meg would rant about the way Bond treats women
@@FireLordIroh Makes me want to watch it more
No darksied doesnt love granny goodnees 😂, she's one of his loyal generals, she mostly trains the furies and those brainwashed by dasaad another of darksieds generals.
Check out Superman Unbound too. Probably the last movie that introduces Supergirl in animation.
I love barda so fucking much aaaaaaa
14:05 The ambush was the point, if there was an emergency Kara would panic the same way and could've done irreparable damage so she needs to learn control
They *were* still being assholes about it, though
11:00 Will you watch "My Adventures with Super Man" and "Superman and Lois" one day?
Also, Injustice 2 features more of Supergirl for example.
Don’t watch Smallville, watch Superman & Lois. The writing and action there are both phenomenal
I second this.
Or the Lois and Clark series from the 90s.
I would recommend she watch both.
Both are good Smallville is amazing Tom Welling is the best Superman (I know he says he's not Superman but he did all the Superman things and Clark is Superman)
But Superman And Lois is incredible too, and extremely underrated, I haven't finished the final season yet but the few episodes I've gotten to are really good
If you'd like to read some Barda I'd highly recommend the current Birds of Prey run by Kelly Thompson. The first arc "Megadeath" has been printed as a volume.
Edit: another great one I just read is Barda by Ngozi Ukazu, which gives you her origin.
You'd think "Omegadeath" would make more sense... and be less derivative.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8psConsidering it centres around stopping a character called Megaera, not really.
@@CassFan99 Still derivative.
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8psDamn, imagine being so bent out of shape over an arc in a comic series having a derivative title LOL.

Also Batman was straight up trolling to Kara when he said "Speak English", Batman understand and can speak Kryptonese.
No, they've been teaching her English for a week, he's Henry Higgins. "It's the rain in Spain, not thee wreyn in Speyn."
@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps Oh yes, I was telling it as a jest. It would still be something to see Batman teach Kara English Lessons.

@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps Sorry I mean he was trolling was a jest or joke. I kinda wanted to add flair to the word, kind of like using words people use less.
This is super random and probably not something you've seriously considered watching... but I'd be really interested in your reaction and overall discussion on a show called: "Bojack Horseman." It has a lot of complicated discussions on mental health and heavy topics like, eating disorders, parental neglect, and the cycle of abuse. It's depressing, but good. The first season is a little rough, but it starts finding it's unique style in season two and so on...Once again, it's just a recommendation... but please don't feel pressured at all to watch it if you don't feel like it. Anyways, love the channel, and I'm looking forward to whatever comes next.❤
yes! I hope we get to see some Smallville reactions in the future!
One thing I’ll say is that there hasn’t been a good JLA movie about the ‘Identity Crisis’ stories, which explains the real reason Batman becomes the trustless cynic he’s portrayed as here. He didn’t use to be so logic over reason, and it’s because of the League; granted, the comic that explains it has some really triggering stuff, but with a SEVERE rewrite it’d make way more sense and be way better.
Sure, but Batman was right, Kara's story had big holes, her arcs right after this kept coming back to it, like did her father send her to kill baby Kal-El or not, it was a whole kerfuffle.
If you're looking for more Superman, especially Clark as a Father you should watch Superman & Lois. The show feels like a natural extension of Superman TAS, Lois & Clark are married and they're raising twin boys. Bitsie and Tyler as Lois & Clark are easily the best to ever do it. At least before Smallville. Smallville is 217 episodes whereas S&L is only 53 episodes.
This came just in time, oh yeah
5:06 I mean, it is Gotham City, so I guess their first thought was, "Great, another villain." Gotham police are known to be much more extreme, too. Which sucks when you get mistaken for a villain.
5:56 Gotham without Blimps feels wrong though 😭
Considering clone thing, honestly, i feel this moment was kinda, comic book nerds fanservice. Because Doomsday is a Superman villain mostly known from one comic book story, so this moment with those clones was basicaly the writer going "Dear reader, imagine, army of Doomsdays! Now isn't that crazy? And Batman gonna fight them with an ax because this is an awasome drawing". And i guess it kinda shows the deeper we go into comic book universe the more fantastic things become a bit less fantastic? The clonining isn't really important, of course Apokolips have this technology
I don't think i actually ever watched this movie, but i read the comic book a couple of times, it reintroduced Supergirl to DC universe after years of absence. And yeah, i think the biggest problem with this story is how TENSE everybody seems to be, i can kinda excuse Batman being paranoid because he is often like that but Wonder Woman ambushing Clark and Kara instead just asking if she could train her is crazy to me. Honestly similarly, i was always suprised how angry Krypto is in this movie, he is always such a good boy.
And i think you would really enjoy My Adventures with Superman, its a newer show that is a bit different take on the characters but its very enjoyable and cute (and with characters like Lois and Jimmy more on the forefront)
R.i.p. Micheal Turner, one of the coolest and amazing artist who made the book this was based off.
you should check out Superman Unbound as well
I'd almost say it's worth waiting until after you've seen the first 2 seasons of Justice League animated series to then watch JL crisis on 2 Earths. In my opinion alot of the older DC animated movies kinda took for granted you already knew or been watching other projects.
Because he's Batman.
I mean, to be completely fair to Batman and the GCPD when a random person shows up in Gotham and starts injuring people and/or damaging buildings it isn’t unreasonable to assume they don’t have good intentions
Granny is just a minion.
It will be a while before you get to it, but the episode of Justice League Unlimited featuring Barda I predict will be a heavy favorite for you.
You should watch Batman ninja 🥷 the Japanese dub
How convenient that you release your reaction to this movie just off the heels of “Little Girl Lost”. Both this movie and that two-parter share so many similarities. Love this reaction!
They’re a natural pairing for sure.
You should watch young justice at some point. You’ll be introduced to the younger Sidekicks.
