This video and my Scottish trip gave my dad a tear in his eye. When you grow up in South Africa in uitenhage, you don't even think of playing the Old Course. You see them play the Open there, and you read history about it. But you never for a moment have even the start of a thought that you will ever play it. Never.
Not only are there visa issue for South Africans just to get to the UK, but 300 GBP for a round for a round of golf in an expensive European country is not in the realms of possibility. Thanks to this channel and sponsors like Takomo, and the playas who support the channel, I was able to do what neither my dad nor I thought was possible. I played the Old Course at St Andrews. Luckily i also was able to reinstate my family’s nationality that were lost during the war so i could travel as a Lithuanian. Otherwise this would not have happened
This is the pinnacle - as good as playing at pebble and the town of St Andrews is a place I could live forever. The St Andrews Golf green fees differ depending on which course, by they are quite cheap in comparison to the Old Course (less than $100). I played a couple of them with my friend J5. It was an honor to be able to play at the complex. Before the round, I did look at St Andrews Old course maps, and even walked the course 4 times. But I never actually looked at hole 11 or 12. I always turned around. To my detriment.

I shouldn't have doubted you, 1.4 in autumn/winter in Scotland a real achievement considering you play in the tropics normally!
I hear you about hole 16. Played that course twice back to back days. First day I had a decent card going. OB with my first ball and then a little tennis from one side of the green to the other. 9. 🙁
Awesome sauce Matty! So I seem to make similar mistakes in bunkers. After lecturing you abt resetting the pre shot routine. Yeesh 12 on a part 3. I hang my head in shame.

So happy i got to watch you make it to the Old Course. Great round with just one mean bunker. That rando german with the 67 would be an interesting round to watch too. I loved seeing everyones tee shot on the final 2 holes.
12 killed me in the same way. Also the last 6 killed me for that matter. 15 over in seriously crazy, hang on for dear life, barely got it to the road on 18, headwind.
Couple of my cousins caddy at St Andrews, one told me that on a calm day that I would shoot no more than 67 find it hard to believe.

Played there myself on a winter ticket the last three years. Fantastic place, over the moon to beat my handicap there, even if it was a measly 90 gross score. I visited a bunker on the 12th too, hard not to! Plenty of bunkers in the rough too, which just adds insult to injury! Fantastic turf to play off, even in winter. Happy days.

The Old Course isn't that hard of a course. Certainly the winds on a given day may change that but, there are far better and more challenging tracks in the county of Fife. The Old Course is cool because it's the Old Course . . . and I'll leave it at that.
Matty, my 4.7 handicap prediction is in shambles but you’re absolutely mashing the long irons off the tee, we love to see it. Although I will say hole 12 was hilarious and all to familiar. Jahh bless you Mr. Boom Boom and Godspeed

Actually at st Andrews and much of Scotland no one gives a flying scheisse about much. Except like muirfield and Royal Aberdeen. Plus St Andrews is actually a public park or something so they really can’t tell you not to. It’s amazing

Played my only round there in July’18(with a caddie) and after doubling the first I played the final 17 holes-4 without a bogey and equalled my best ever score of 70 (7 handicap). Like you I played the New Course the previous day and although I didn’t play as well I found it more difficult.
Shout out to my caddie for both days Colin, a great guy and the most committed and conscientious caddie I’ve had in 25 rounds in Scotland. If the average caddie gets a minimum of £70-90 per round then he was worth double. I gave him £120 from memory. Even my playing partners conceded how good he was. And we also bumped into Monty on the way around who was preparing for the Senior Open.

True story to verify that. Once, when I used to live in Russia, I was setting up a nice welcome home surprise for my girlfriend, who was returning from a trip to her home town. I had the candles set out, a small scavenger hunt set up, champagne in the fridge. Last minute decision, I decided to go out for some flowers, and on the way home, I got myself a Pepsi from the corner shop. As I was walking back to my building, this old man walking past me looked oat me and said не та бутылка к букету (that's not the bottle for the bouquet). I told him the right bottle was already in the fridge but I felt that I had already affirmed American stereotypes.😅

Mind you.. living here in South Africa and earning below minimum wage (like 70% of the population). So I have to choose, buy one of your Mac daddy wiener slapping shirts and play no golf for the month.. or buy a golf shirt from Mr.Price and play 3 or 4 rounds of golf for the month.😂😂
Old course off the black tees. The slope must be heavy there so handicap index must increase. Never fancied a 1 iron, i play a 2 iron but with old school loft (19°) fits my gaps though. You played well in the main, although that bunker so close to the wall with a pw you was asking for trouble and you got it. Enjoyed your vlog thanks for posting
I just got takomo 101 , and I feel easier to hit than my old Mizuno jpx921 forged. but i can not hit 4 iron and 5 iron like you.
Well played! Couple of poor decisions cost you. Always take driver dead straight on 12 if you're a big hitter or hit it left or right into the rough. And, as you said, stick to your game plan and play the shots you know.

I got that tip from a St. Andrews caddy. Apart from one hole (which might be the 13th ) it is always Left off the tee on the Old Course. Maybe it is the 14th. (to avoid Hell Bunker) either way it is on the back 9.

Loved it. Played the old course as a 16 year old assistant professional. Bogies 1,17 and 18 the rest just battered me! One day gonna go back, can be sure will be watching this video again and again. Went in one fairway bunker that I didn’t know was there till I fell in it 😂😂😂😂

There is a replica Course in Dallas called the Tribute that has St. Andrews 1, 11, 17, 18 as part of the 18 holes. She eagled from 177 yards on the replica 17. Crazy stuff playa.
Matt, are you playing the 301s? I was debating the combo set or just go more forgiving all through the bag. Thoughts?
