He actually wrote this for a young female soldier that he served with in Kosovo who died in combat beside him and that is why at about 4:29 the lyric is "and someones little girl was taken from the world tonight".

James Blunt (actual spelling Blount), had been an officer in the British Army. His father had been a Colonel flying helicopters in the Army Air Corps and his family has a long tradition and history of military service going back centuries. He deployed to Kosovo in the late 90s and later became a member of the Queen's Guard. While in Kosovo his unit was ordered by an American General to capture an airfield which had been taken by Russian troops, however the British General refused the order. He served a total of six years in the British Army attaining the rank of Captain. He wrote songs in his spare time. His is an interesting story.

I spoke to James about this song and he said it’s having a British soldier killed accidentally by friendly fire which is one of the casualties sometimes in any war (hence the Stars and Stripes) and happens more than you think (not just with Brits and Americans of course) and because it doesn’t get talked about enough he wrote a song about it

Everybody on my dad's side, except for one of my brothers, died of cancer. My dad was the first at 51 to brain cancer. His 4 brother, 2 sisters, numerous cousins, 2 of my sisters & another brother has about 2 weeks to live. It's a horrible disease. I love the true emotions that you two "headbangers" allow to flow freely & genuinely!!!
