James Blunt's father (Colonel Charles Blunt) was dying of stage 4 kidney failure and they were not finding a donor. James (who also served in the military as a Captain) wrote this as a goodbye. The "I'm not your son, you're not my father" part was something he and his Dad would say to each other whenever they had to deploy. (think British Military / stiff upper lip mindset) BTW... James Blunt donated the proceeds from this to "Hope for Heros" a veteran's charity. Because of this song, a distant relative of theirs got tested and turned out to be as match for Charles Blunt and he is alive and well now. LOVED the reaction! 🎶🔥💖😎
It's actually Blount. James changed it to Blunt.
Thank you for the explanation as the lyrics didn't make sense to me but you've given me total clarity now. I wish I had read his story before but I will now.
@@MerryChristmas3 I have to agree with you tho... the last name Blunt and a song with 4:20 is just too funny to be a coincidence!! 🤣😁
If I remember - his Dad (who is in this video) was the only one NOT crying - James and the crew were in pieces by the end - while his Dad kept wryly saying, 'I've not gone yet' or something similar - Beautiful song - tears every time I hear it
Love your reaction. I’ve seen others. You are the most authentic reaction of them all. First seeing by our channel btw. No matter who you are, your background, you musical taste, this song will hit you.
Dad passed away last night, I didn't get the chance to be with him by his side😞😢
Sorry for your loss
Condolences,
My heart with you. I know the feeling.
Thanks for not interrupting the video. Thank you "tough guys" for sharing your emotions. And finally, thanks for listening and watching James Blunt! THANKS
Thank you, you made me aware of this song. My father died at the beginning of the war defending Kyiv, it broke my heart, but now it's my turn to chase the monsters away
RIP

My deepest condolences! Slava Ukraini!

You teared up. Natural reaction. I'm a grown man and this song tears me up.
It’s a tearjerker!
Haha when Mat said: I expected Piano I was like : I expect tears 😂
😂
My dad died in February this year and.. yeah.. this song is literally a hammer blow men..
we were very close and we weren't the type to say I love you to each other but we both knew that one was the most important person for the other..
it's always when they're gone that we say I love you.. by ego or by nature (yeah..we the men, are like that in general)
Rest in Peace Dad, I love you.
Take care guys.
So sorry about your dad buddy ❤
So for your lost... Hope you doing well
same i only once have said "i love you", i dont know if its funny or sad, but it was on accident, i usualy frequently said to my mom i love you, i got so comfortable around dad one moment that it just slipped automatically. We are not so open to emotions, to say i love you, but same as you we also know that we do, and that is the most important thing. Though, its still important to say it, you might miss the chanse to do so.
@@skidipap8750 я так и не успел ( я каждый раз плачу что так и не сказал отцу что люблю его
This is a great reaction....every moment as the song progressed we could see you both just melting under the thoughts and emotions the song was invoking..so raw and so beauiful
What a heartfelt reaction from you both. This song gets everyone, it’s so incredibly powerful.
Powerful reaction guys. Love your honesty. losing a parent is the hardest thing I"ve ever gone through.
Look up the story behind why James Blunt wrote this song. I think you will appreciate his tears more. The two of you were genuine. Thanks for being real.
I have watched A LOT of reaction videos to this song, but this is definitely the most real reaction I have seen. This song can bring tears to my eyes nearly everytime I see the video, but when I saw the tears start running down Chel's face, it was really hard to hold mine back. I actually cried more at the end of your reaction listening to your reflection on the song and hearing why this song touched you both (especially Mat), than I did while the music video was playing. Thank you both for being so open and transparent. Honesty like that is what earns you more loyal viewers. Keep up the good work. :)
This song got everyone who listened. If you didn't cry, you don't have a soul.
I am sorry you two had it so rough when you were kids. I could feel your pain. It takes guts to share, and you showed it. I hope you see better days to come.
Beautiful reaction Mat and Chels. This song always brings me to tears, James is a phenomenal vocalist. 🙏❤
The amount of songs james has made is longer than his name,A very popular song writer around the world. The tears were real in his video, that's the bond they both had for each other.
GREAT VIDEO! AUTHENTIC reactions with no interruptions (pausing of video). You guys did AWESOME!!! ❤❤❤ TY!!
Thank you for your vulnerability sharing your story. Love watching the two of you and how genuine you are 😊❤
This reaction is as real as this song. True and expressive. Thank you for opening up. Truly one of the best reaction to this song.
This is one of the most emotional songs I listened to and it hit home with me. I lost my dad when I was 5 and I remember saying goodbye to him as he passed. I remember he would always look under the bed for the monster etc. To this day 55 yrs later I remember his death affected me terribly and started my depression that I deal with to this day, I remember him being a very caring father and loving too. I miss him to this day and I am glad James Blunt's father survived, it's hard losing a parent at any age.
There's this thing that some reactors do where they pause the end ever so slightly too early and miss one of the most powerful moments (for me anyway). His dad reaches over and pats his arm so tenderly. As someone who never knew their father it's always a great finisher for me. Caps it off wonderfully.
I was kind of robbed of saying goodbye to my dad. I was stationed in Virginia when he went to the hospital. My car was not running because I was doing a valve job on it. Two of my brothers came to get me. By the time we got to Baltimore my dad had passed away 15 minutes before.
James Blunt is a beautiful singer . Hope to hear more . thank you for this honest
review 👍
watch the end bit again. His dad pats his arm at the end. That was done in one take, no filters nothing. Everyone behind the camera was crying but his dad.
As James has shown it’s ok to cry. Go give your dad a big hug ❤
I absolutely love the role reversal in this song.
I love when metal reactors are willing to branch out into other genres!
I’m 33, I haven’t seen my father in 8 years, barely knew him growing up. Him and my mom weren’t married and I’ve had a lot of animosity towards him. This song though, at least helped me feel at peace knowing that even though I’ll never be close to him, I forgive him.
😢 your not human if this song doesn't affect you, guys you made me cry again 😢 ❤
Forgot say what a lovely reaction you guys. Millions of people around the world feel exactly the same as you both. 🙋♂❤
Well done guys that was a great honest reaction and amazing on not hitting the pause button 👏👏
Bless you both. So sorry for your pain. Sometimes we have to go through the pain to get to the healing. Great reaction thank you for sharing your time and your thoughts. Peace ✌ New sub from Ohio
This was the first reaction that I saw of you too. I’m really glad it was because it shows how human you are, and bleed just like the rest of us. I definitely subscribed and will check out your other reaction.
Thank you both from an old Dad in Montana….Your Welcome anytime….Thank You again…!
Thank you for being so vulnerable and strong you guys are amazing friends and so strong
This was beautiful. Not just the song. You 2 made it special. Thank you
Out of all the reaction channels, you guys are my favorite. Just the genuine, real reactions from both of you just makes people feel like theyre not alone. I mean thats why we watch reactions in the first place right? To see if other people feel the way that we do about songs, videos, movies. You guys are the best people, and the most relatable. You chase our monsters away
At the time, his dad was dying. It was his tribute to his dad. Family can be so hard. We all walk with invisible scars and that’s what makes us amazing.
Thank you for a heartwarming reaction! 🥰
Beautiful heartfelt, wholesome reaction.
James is great at drawing you in (Raw)
Much love and respect from The UK
Beautiful hearts you both have! Thank you for such an honest reaction.
Other sad songs of James written about his time in the military are 'Carry you Home' and 'No Bravery' which are excellent 👌
A more uplifting song 'The greatest'
His best and most heartfelt albums are his 1st Back to Bedlam and more recent Once Upon A Mind.
Bravery hits especially hard, it's just a genius piece of music .
@@jackwhitbread4583 100% agree
love the stories you shared at the end
I've never seen you so seriously before. Send you hugs.
Beautiful song...make me crying
You made me cry more for telling your side 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
First time seeing you guys. Good reaction :)
Thank you for one of the most honest reactions & openness to this song. 👏🏻👏🏻👍👍🇬🇧
He loved that grand baby ...Dallas he loved them all and I miss him so much he was my best friend in the entire world...
The pain and emotion I feel from the both of you is palpable even thru a computer screen. This song resonates powerfully to all who hear it. I lost my dad to suicide when I was 19. My brother followed his path 11 years later. Every day for me is a titanic struggle while I suffer from what ailed my family. I feel you, man. You're not alone ever in this world. I hope things get better for you. There are people to talk to out there, caring people. Even in a comments section for a video!! Great reaction and review, the both of you, it's immensely encouraging to watch and be part of these heartfelt reaction videos, and remind myself that this world isn't just filled with garbage, but real humans. I will certainly be keeping an eye out for more of your reactions. I'm a guy in my 50's now. Although at a low point, these videos actually help, believe it or not. Thank you!
Love the reaction, I had the same one... great you let it play through.... all round great work from James and we all felt it. Dads
My mother and father left me at 8 months old for my grandmother to raise me. I only started having a relationship with my father w few years ago. Lifes too short to hold grudges. You dont wanna look back when they are gone wnd regret anything.
incredible song! still got my dad but for some reasons I can't tell him what I wish I could.
ahhh, I love this reaction, thanks you two. I love how you guys don't shy away from your vulnerability(not that you have to, but you did it anyway, so, very appreciated), the silence from your choking up speaks volume. it's just human being human, that's why we collectively connect on a emotional level, and it is really reassuring and humanizing, that's why I love watching reactions.
Hello from Australia, this song gets me everytime 😢.
Thanks for the true and honest reaction. Both of you are amazing people and thankyou for telling your stories, that took courage and respect to you both. It's my first time to your channel, but I'm now here to stay 😊.
I'm not sure if you take suggestions from the comments, if you do, I suggest an Aussie legend, John Farnham.
Anything from his concert with the Melbourne symphony orchestra is overly amazing.
I would start with,
- ACDC cover, it's a long way to the top.
- playing to win
- your the voice.
- Beatles cover, help.
you have to go and see him perform. We were lucky enough to be on the front row last year. You can feel the emotion, you can feel the relationships with the different people he has met - from his time in the military to his Dad. Extraordinary. .
It’s my turn to chase the monsters away. Eugh beautiful lyrics
People bag James Blunt as a commercial gimp... the guy is literally a military hero like his old man that would kick your ass on the field of combat. A true legend and the nicest guy in the music industry. X
My dad died when I was 4; that was seventy years ago and I still miss him and this song is a gut punch to everyone who hears it. Whether they're gone or not; whether you had time to forgive, forget, say goodbye or not; we all know this time comes for our relationships. I'm thinking about how to say goodbye to my grandchildren because it's not today but it's not never. "My turn" - the song acknowledges how at the end the role of child and parent reverses. It's our turn to become our parents' caretakers.
Music is supposed to make you feel and this song achieves that end.
What a beautiful reaction 🤗🫶
Big hug for you, Mat!
❤️
hi guys this song monsters started of as a poem from james sister to her dad and james turned it into a song all the proceeds went to the charity
Thank you for being genuine and expressing your emotions as are the whole point of reactions are meant to be. Your raw authenticity (rather than fake "here's how I'm supposed to act BS") was very welcome and appreciated. This is one tough song but meaningful.
The kidney donor who saved Charles Blounts life was also called Charles Blount.
What a lovely reaction, loved it. It made me cry too.
Most go into this song thinking its Halloweenesk . It shows in the reactions each one has. Bless your heart. Hope all is better.
Omg guys just found your channel...you guys are amazing..your reaction hit me hard ❤ ..
This song is new to me because of the AI audition. But those lyrics alone get me. Mother and mother or son and son. Wow. It hits me everytime. One of my favorites
No Bravery is another great song by James Blunt, about his time in the army.
Greatreaction guys. Loved it.
Background. James Blunt's father Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father"....the studio also wanted to do retakes because he was legit crying and he told them to stick it
No matters what kind of music u listen.. This is one of the most powerful songs ..
who is Kevin Smith? I like him to, but not as much as this guy XD - OK seriously, thank you for being so open. Its refreshing! Such an emotional song. 1:39 Janis Joplin jumps in! that crack in voice really was fantastic.
Excellent reaction guys 🫶
Your reactions were beautiful! I am a new fan. This song hits men particularly hard, I think.I last saw my dad 44 years ago when I was 16...and just a handful of times before that. His choice...still hurts.
Great reaction, you two are great, thank you
Thank you too!
Both Blunt and his father served in the military and when James's was sent to Kosovo it has been reported that when his father said goodbye, his dad said, "you are not my son and I am not your father, we are just two grown men saying goodbye ".
I don’t know how he is today, but his dad fortunatly survived his serious illness. But it is helpful to remember that one day we lose our parents and try to keep in contact - if possible.
Love to you both!❤
James Blunt.... that guy,
he brings us to our thoughts! Phew. Whether we wanted to or not! Beautiful singer 🥰 thank you for sharing! :)
the power of the patreons, this fellow had to watch something he was not keen I think,... boy oh boy James came down like a ton of bricks and smacked him hard on the face,.. he teared up didn't he,...
I'll make it short and sweet... first timer... Loved it... Mat... call your dad...make the future you want and deserve... its never to late man... be blessed!
Great reaction from you both ❤
My son is afraid to visit me as my health is starting to decline. What I really want, before I go, is a hug from my son & grandson. I just had to accept it & go on. This song hits a lot of people's hearts.
James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. This is his real Dad in the video
It ended up being a distant cousin who matched with him and it was bc of this video & song ❤
It’s ok to cry. Great reaction.
Lovely and thoughtful reaction.
It really hurts my heart ❤ beautiful, heartbreaking song
I really like your true emotional reaction!
First time watching you. Great reaction.
I very nearly lost my dad to a car accident 25 years ago I was only 11 years old at the time, he, my mother and I were all changed by that moment, I am lucky that he is 70 years old and still in my life, this song hits me so hard.
The emotions you guys showed while watching this were amazing. He has another very emotional song recently that I think would hit you hard. The Girl That Never Was. You guys should react to the official music video for that 😢
We’ve got another emotional James Blunt reaction on the way in the next few days!
James sister wrote the poem, James made it into this powerful, emotional song ❤
Their family name is Blount. But, the name of the long lost Cousin was Charles Blount, the same as his father. After this video was finished all the crew were in tears & sobbing. Charles said what is this all about, I'm still here. Hahaha
Pure reaction ❤
I lold with the reference of last name and song length lol
Strange how I enjoy seeing people become emotional. Lovely reaction,
I loved your emotional reactions....so I subscribed. Familial alienation is necessary sometimes to work on our own mental health, and then we can be strong enough to withstand being around people who don't have our best interests at heart. Bless you both, and I think it's 4:20 somewhere...LOL!
Beautiful reaction
Thank you
Ok, to be honest I have never heard of this song though. And the first time I found out was when Cakra Khan covered it. He sings it is also dedicated to his deceased father.
Thanks to James Blunt for making such a great song.
Thanks for the reaction, and for reading my comments.
You are not the first to be lost for words, this song hits home.
