I have owned over 100 cars and the 1M is still my favorite, especially when you factor in price, but buy now before prices skyrocket. I have done a lot of long term reviews on mine and it still runs great !
I love the 1M, my friend has one and when the M2 was launched the BMW dealer offered 10k cash and a free M2 for the trade in.......he knocked it back and kept the 1M.
@MrJWW I also own a 1M since more than 4 years - excellent review about the feelings of driving this car, but let me get a few things right: 0:29 the car was produced until mid 2012, so a bit more than a year 1:22 the wheels are coming from the e92 competition pack and were not exclusive for the 1M 1:40 first BMW/M car to have air curtains 4:22 Alcantara is not a standard trim on M cars. However you can get the M Performance steering wheel which has alcantara (I have it also, it's great!) I think it is also worth mentioning that this "Frankenstein" M car has also borrowed the n54 as it has been fitted to the Z4 sdrive35i. Development time was also only 1 year due to the upcoming new 1er generation. Otherwise great review!
the utlimate pocket rocket to cruise around in style and comfort. Those flared wheel arches and aggressive haunches don't do it justice. Saw my first one in Boston years back..
I have always admired these great little cars and recently bought one of only 200 here in Australia. I fully agree with your comments that the numbers don’t really describe the driving experience, it’s just an awesome car to drive and I have a smile on my face the whole time.
Hi MR JWW, fantastic video man :D I would like to ask, when you will upload the review about "AutoScout24 Confiscated Cars Sale" channel, you talked about earlier? Had a Z4M also...did a testdrive with a used 1M back in the days. Great car, but coming from a Z4M; I was not 100% convinced about the looks (interior and exterior) and the way it drove... Some time later I did a test drive with a M2 and ordered one the same day (as my daily car) and kept the Z4M. M2 is certainly not a future classic like the 1M, but hey who cares...we live now :) Sad that in 20 years time they will not build cars like this anymore :(
The whole 1 series could become classic, my opinion. I bought a 128i manual with the m sport package and it was the hardest car to find I’ve ever owned. It still has the organic characteristics of the older BMW’s.
I went from a '13 135i manual w/ M3 control arms to a '18 M2 manual and also have driven a 1M once. I must say, everything he described about the suspension, steering feel and steering wheel itself is spot on.I like my M2, but I LOVED my E82 135 and driving in E82 1M. I miss the thick wheel and how much heavier the steering felt. Something much more rewarding about it.
I have driven the following 4 cars for test purpose (1M vs M2 DCT vs manual M2 vs M4 DCT)... Back in the days I could have bought a used 1M (with 10K euro to spare) or a brand new M2. For a fun-daily-track combination the "manual" M2 was the best choice in my book. The 1M is indeed more special and a bit more raw with more steering feel...but not the greatest car to use everyday and the brakes are indeed crap when going for it. Also the 1M looks were not 100% my taste (personal opinion). The M4 is just not my kind of car...
ronald michelli I did the same, but also had a quaife LSD and Birds suspension. M2 meh for me and I now sorely miss my 135i. Given a choice again I wouldn't bother with the M2. Not particularly reliable either. I would have a fettled 135i or a 1M all day long.

@Michael Jackson - I have a Mini Cooper S with a MiniMadness kit, and a brake & handling package and every time I think about selling it I go for a drive and come home with such a huge smile on my face, I change my mind. IMO, good acceleration up to about 160 KPH, strong brakes and go-kart handling are all you really can use unless you're chasing lap times... Noisy enough to be entertaining and a manual transmission. 😁

Definately would love to get to own one someday, It’s just you, the car, a manual transmission and (hopefully) a great curvy road hahaha. Loved the phrase where you said M cars make you smile and i have to completely agree with that, we own a Phoenix Yellow 2002 E46 M3 and god bless those Sunday morning route-discovering through small roads cruising mountains, and also can’t forget those 7000rpms accelerations from that screamy S54 straight six! Friend of mine had one in orange few years back I love them he ended up doing a deal on it with a c63 at the time.. Kicking himself now with the prices!
I always wanted one. In 2011 when it came out here in the states they were charging 15-20k over sticker. Sadly that made it out of my price point. Ended up getting a 2011 Audi S4. But I would have loved the 1 series m coupe. Today it’s still gorgeous and aged very well.
I don't even have a house yet. I own a car that is worth less than $10 grand, and I'm looking at cars that are worth $50, $60 grand. Watch out though, I'm gonna make it happen. I don't want a Corvette, I don't want a Mustang, I'm going for BMW M, straight away. Thanks for the wonderful video.
Isnt it funny how we keep coming back to the small, manual, front engined, rear wheel drive car, under 1500kgish with about 200bhp per tonne. It's a solid sweet spot for driving fun. E46 m3, 1m, 135i, m2 competition they're all the ones that people want.
Hey James, I'm absolutely loving the modern classics series! Keep it up! As for suggestions for future episodes, how about the Audi Quattro, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 or a classic Porsche 911?
I also love the direction with the "new classics" reviews, i hope you can do some day an Volvo v70R last generation as an example, keep up this excellent channel, and by far one of the best automotive channels.
Like how he doesn't consider X6 M as the first proper turbocharged M car. Anyway I agree on what he's saying. The first thing I always do on mine is to press the m button and turn the mdm on. It has quite charactful turbo lag and throttle response which I don't think other N54's have. First there's not much happening but soon your rears are breaking loose. It feels like it has a lot more power than they are saying. The standard lightened flywheel and absolutely perfect pedal positioning make heel & toe a joy. The steering feel is pretty good but the steering wheel is a bit too fat. The seats are just standard sport seats from an E92 335i. Unfortunately have to sell mine in a couple of weeks.

Love these cars and I sorely miss my N55 135i E82 coupe that had the Birds suspension and quaife LSD fitted. Given a choice again I'd keep it over my F87 BMW. The E82 135i was a rare beast too. Now an M2 comparison.
@MrJWW the brakes on the standard 135i were better than these. I honestly do not know what they were thinking in retrospect to the brakes however the rest of it is truly phenomenal!!
One of my family members has one of these in Valencia orange. Its a uk car registered from 2012 (12 plate) and does have the infotainment screen and idrive system. Strange to see this one not have it.
The only thing I dislike about the 1M is the front bumper and headlights. I wish they had a sleeker look, similar to the modern 2-series. These look a bit bug-eyed and squashed. I find 1-series in general even today to be squashed looking.
YEEEEEEES James!!! Boom!! Belting vid mate!! I drive a remapped 225bhp 120d coupe. Cracking lil car. The 1M is one of my all time faves. Love it!! Awesome content again. Looking forward to the next? Have you looked at the original Honda NSX yet? 95 type R version. Hehe.
BMW of this era and previous clutch feel is delicious. The current generation Beamers have and a feature that adds gas to prevent one from stalling, but it feels so artificial and disconnected.
I have owned over 100 cars and the 1M is still my favorite, especially when you factor in price, but buy now before prices skyrocket. I have done a lot of long term reviews on mine and it still runs great !

1:22 the wheels are coming from the e92 competition pack and were not exclusive for the 1M

4:22 Alcantara is not a standard trim on M cars. However you can get the M Performance steering wheel which has alcantara (I have it also, it's great!)
I think it is also worth mentioning that this "Frankenstein" M car has also borrowed the n54 as it has been fitted to the Z4 sdrive35i. Development time was also only 1 year due to the upcoming new 1er generation.
Otherwise great review!

Yes that is true. They cost the same as an M4 in my country. I believe a lot v12 Mercedes Benz will start appreciating too
The Car will age better like fine wine without the infotainment system looking extremely dated in 10 years.
Perfect spec - Sapphire black with no ugly nav!
The predecessor to the m240i! These little cars are so much fun to drive on the backroads
The 1M is fully M underneath. The M240i is in old money a "sport". M240i is quicker though.

the noise of that microphone shaking is making my subwoffers go BANANAS... plz do try to fix this in the next videos J.
I don't like BMWs, but this car is an exception. One of the greatest car ever made.
Every time I see one, which isn’t often ( a blue one ) I think “ mmmm should I “ great review as usual
I had a 1M I loved it but I modified it and 6 months after sold it for a E30 M3
Hello MR JWW, nice video man :D When you will upload that review of "AutoScout24 Confiscated Cars Sale" channel, you talked about before? I am very interested to buy from them, as they are offering cars confiscated from owners by the governments at the best price really. Ferarri, Lambo, Rolls, for 25.000$, come on man, that's the best opportunity, like ever :D I am waiting on that material man :D Best wishes to you man :D :D
@@borisjakovljevic7348 I also know for them man, from a friend who bought the newest bmw m4 from the last month, for only 8.000$. That is what I would call a bargain! How do you heard for them my friend ? :))

Thank you for reviewing cars like this one!
What a legend of a car!
Amazing review! It was a real pleasure to watch it. Question is, why isn't Mr JWW already a member of Top Gear together with Chris Harris?!
E92 M3! Can't beat the sound of a highly strung V8!
Nah, proper M cars = straight 6
Crewe Hall has some fantastic rooms.
YEEEEEEES James!!! Boom!! Belting vid mate!! I drive a remapped 225bhp 120d coupe. Cracking lil car. The 1M is one of my all time faves. Love it!! Awesome content again. Looking forward to the next? Have you looked at the original Honda NSX yet? 95 type R version. Hehe.
This was the best generation of BMW
BMW of this era and previous clutch feel is delicious. The current generation Beamers have and a feature that adds gas to prevent one from stalling, but it feels so artificial and disconnected.
