    Brilliant review and inside knowledges. I've owned many sunday driver cars (Peugeot 205 gti, renault 200 cup, c63, e39 m5 and now a 1M. Whilst the e39 M5 is the only 1 i truly regret selling.... and the 1M high riding/seating position takes some adjuating too, it is a phenomenal car; at this price point. Not gonna sell this gem of a car. Thanks again for your content.

      Amazing video and comparison. I realize this is an old video but wanted to see if you had any thoughts on the new 2023 M2 versus these two cars. My only concern with the 1M and the M2 Comp is that most of them are now out of warranty. Thanks!

  • @freedbeefpontoons

    This is a fun comparison. The other day I was sitting in my M2 Competition when a 1M pulled up and parked a half a block up from me. I couldn't help myself, once I got out of my car I had to make a detour in order to snap a quick photo with my phone. As much as I love my M2 Comp, I really doubt anyone is going to bother to go out of their way to take a photo of one. It's just never going to be THAT special of an automobile. Cool? sure. Different and a little rare? Sure. But it won't ever have that OG unicorn aura about it.
    Now for my use case, as my only street legal vehicle, I couldn't justify a 1M over something with a warranty. And even then the allure of all that horsepower and torque would've maybe steered me towards the M2 anyway. But the 1M remains undoubtedly the cooler vehicle and i'm sure it'll hold its value better. Still, its nice that BMW continues to build small, good looking, reasonably practical performance cars available with a manual transmission in 2020. I somehow doubt that will be the case for much longer.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  4 года назад +3

      I tend to agree with you. While we dont know what the future will hold... I think if we want BMW or any car company for that matter to continue to make great cars, we need to make sure we buy them new in greater numbers.... otherwise, we will all be driving appliances with no personality in the future.

    It's great to see a comparison direct from an owner, so thank you for taking the time to do this and to share with us.
    I own a 1M from new, and an M2 (DSG) from 2016. I finally sold the M2 just because I feel that the DSG does take away a layer of involvement and fun vs the 1M. I find both the power delivery and the suspension of the 1M more linear than the M2. The passive suspension is just simply very predictable despite a performance biased set up. Like you said, once it is loaded up, the steering and the seat of your pants tell you exactly what the front and the rear are doing. I find the M2 suspension to be overly busy both during low and high speed, and that's not the case on the 1M.
    The DSG 'box on the M2 also seems to shift at too high of an RPM even in normal driving. I find myself short-shifting every now and then to avoid the boomy sound from the engine. There's certainly enough torque, so I'm not sure why the default shift points are so high up the rev range. That becomes tiring and annoying very quickly. (Disclaimer: We bought the DSG variant mainly because my wife was the main driver of the M2.)
    Having owned the 1M for a decade now, I have two complaints. One is related to the fact that it struggles to put the power down a little too often. Even in a straight line, when the road is a little bumpy, the traction control light comes on way too often. The second complain is related to the quality of the parts on the car. Mine is parked indoor most of its life, yet I've had the rear BMW badge came off, roof lining came off, and the wheel cap badge came off. Other than that, the 1M will remain in my permanent collection.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  3 года назад +1

      Glad to hear you have a nice collection and that you have an appreciation for these cars. I actually had 2 1Ms at one time and never had an issue but as for build materials and quality, though I didnt have any issues, we have to remind ourselves these cars were entry level M cars. so they were build accordingly. You are also right, the traction light can be annoying,. just turn it off all together and get used to how the car behaves with no TC. you will become a more competent driver because of it.
      Thanks for watching

    I agree. I have a few cars ...but my 1M feels special. Mine is a totally bare bones no option car which I love. Especially when you look at the premium you pay today for an M4 CS or GTS with stripped down interior. The 1M had that back in 2011 and didn't make a song and dance about it. Simple get in and drive car...

    I can totally relate to the hydraulic steering vs electric thing. My "fun" car is a Z4M coupe and it has fantastic hydraulic steering. Jumping back into it after driving my Golf R, which has a very good rack for an electric one, emphasizes just how much better the hydraulic setup is. It's a crying shame that modern M cars no longer include it.

    Awesome Production. I remember back in 2012 I went on BMW website and built me a White 1M for about $50,000.00. I then went to the BMW dealer here in Honolulu to order a 1M and the sales person laughed out: No you can't get those cars anywhere, they are all gone. Feeling humiliated, I left the dealership and called up BMW Head Office in USA and butched about how disappointed I was that I can't get a 1M and they still have it on their website. They said only about 700+ came to the USA. How could that happen? But that was it. So after searching for a 1M to no avail, I had to settle for a 135i in 2012; which I bought brand new and still have today with only 47000 miles. I am still looking for a 1M at an affordable price. Your 1M is just awesome and I see that you are a real BIMMER. The M2 is out of the question for me. I don't like how they look. Just my opinion. But who knows, I might come around.

    Great video, you got yourself a new subscriber. I'm very familiar with the M2 so here are my inputs on some of the things you mentioned:
    Looks compared to OG - I hated it at first, after some time (and seeing what they did to M3/M4) I actually like the aggressive grille and bumper.
    Revmatch - 3 ways to disable - DSC off, aftermarket tune like MHD or BM3, or just code out the shift pedal sensor (that has downsides like having to push the start button twice, no hill hold, etc ...). I actually like the rev match, on the track its great.
    Sound - the OG sounds 10 times better, equal length mid pipes are the answer for S55

      Yeah those are more or less the main ways I read about if you want to remove auto blipping but like I said, I dig it now.

    Swap out the seats and you will love it even more. The only issue with my 1M was how high you sit - the Recaro's made me realize how much more connected you are when your sitting "in it". Now the JB4 tune and other stuff doesn't hurt but the seats...MUST be done.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  4 года назад

      All bmws have high seats. I would love to swap in some CS Sportsters and maybe I will someday. I just don’t want to deal with airbag lights etc. and yes you can get the modules to fix that but just expensive and a bit annoying. But I know it would be worth it when you drive it.

    The OG M2 LCI looks damn near identicle to the m2 comp. I went with the m2 lci as i absolutely love the n55b (reworked). The sound is incredible. I did add the m2comp seats, s55 aluminum and carbon braces and returned the sterring to m2. I also did upgraded pure 750 turbo, vrsf catless downpipe, turner motor sports carbon intake, stage 2 hpfp, lpfp, upgraded charge pipe, new sparks gapped and tune and man this car is an absolute rocket. 545whp on 93 and 660whp flex fuel e50 blend. Its the perfect m2 in my opinion. Oh and also have the m2 comp mirrors and gts hood. Its very OEM plus. If i ever did an s55 engine i would do it in an m4 with a top mount single turbo otherwise as good as the s55 is the cransk hub needs to be addressed and it just doesnt sound great even with EL midpipes and the one good akrapovic exhaust costs damn near as much as the mods on my car lol. But lets just appreciate thag bmw is still giving us petrol and manual cars for now. Btw 1M is a legend. Love the video keep up the great content.

      I actually have 2 car seats in the M2 for both kids. The M2 is tight but doable as a daily. In the 1M I have another kids seat since that car is more of an 'occasion' car for me. @@amintakruri6929 well without testing it’s just my opinion. However I can say with confidence that the M2 does every corner the 1M does but just at higher speeds. Sometimes significantly higher speeds. Therefore I feel comfortable saying the M2 handles “better.” But it doesn’t mean it’s more fun. The 1M has a more organic feeling. Exactly how you think a car should feel and behave, it does. The M2 feels like it’s a machine you have to learn to drive fast. I’m the end with enough money and r&d you can make either car a kitten on Velcro.

Yes, I thought you preferred the 1M more but you were being so diplomatic I didn't know for sure. Thanks for the clarification! Oh, and the production quality of this video is top notch! Wow, the photography, the music, the font style and animation... really impressive. I'm subscribed! 👍🏻

    I'm a BMW serial owner and love the brand.
    If I could afford to buy a 1M, erm no I couldn't drive something that ugly, with such a cheap nasty interior, without a proper M engine.
    You can get an M2C for less, and that is a much better car in every way in my opinion, looks amazing, proper interior, proper M engine.
    The only reason the 1M commands such high values is because it's rare, that's all.

      Bought an OG M2, almost as fast as an M2C but sounds much better (and I think looks better).

    Oh man if that's even close or better than my tuned up 2011 135I i will die, do you know the difference between these two cars? Also that e46 has nothing on that 1M, that one M needs to come back stronger and newer, they need a 2023 version of that car that will blow the doors off the M2, its gotta, they gotta make it, if they dont BMW is just going gay. Also question, i just saw you have a N54 twin turbo on that car, do you know you can make that car so much faster than the M2 with just a small tune and a couple of engine plastic parts switched to aluminum so they wont crack and lose pressure under all that extra power, have you tuned this car? But that M2 is my next favorite car of all time.
