Mudlarking the River Thames in London - A Very Mysterious Coin - Can you ID it?

  • Join me as I take a mudlarking trip to the River Thames in London and search for historical artefacts from the past. On this outing I am particularly fortunate and find 3 coins. I recognise one as being Victorian but the other two are mysteries until I get home and clean them off! Can you ID them before I tell you what they are?
It's amazing what you can learn from the objects you find in the Thames mud. In this instance, I learned some interesting bits of info about the Monarchs on the coins! There are also a few other artefacts which you might be able to help me to identify!
You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart to see more of my mudlarking finds.
Thank you for watching and if you would like to buy me a virtual cup of earl grey tea (with lemon) then you can donate via my KOFI account which is here:-
    ko-fi.com/nico...
If you are tempted to try mudlarking on the River Thames then you need to have a permit from the Port of London Authority and you can find out all the details you need here:-

    Thank you.

Thank you Nicola. I have seen that video before but much of it was forgotten, like the turtle rib. No way was I gonna name what that was. Such an unusual find. The Fiolet pipes stir curiosity so plan to look them up searching first through the Great Exhibition. One thing leads to another.
Just as a side comment.....if you ever come to Melbourne, we have a large house with two spare rooms. You may use them to keep your accom cost down if you have a mind to. Aussies are a very friendly bunch and love to help out where we can. Our Yarra river is not much of a search area but there are lots of creeks and streams around the old gold mining areas where relics may be unearthed. Nothing as old as in England of course.

Unbelievably, Walter Whiffin is one of my relatives. As soon as you said the name I knew he was in my family tree. He is my first cousin x5 removed. My 5th Great Grandfather who was Richard Whiffin b 21 May 1769 in Westerham Kent was Walter’s grandfather. I am an amateur genealogist and have been researching my family tree for almost 20 years so have managed to do quite a lot of research in that time. I can’t believe you found a button belonging to/made by someone in my tree. Simply amazing!

Hi Nicola! the "mystery coin" is a 6 deniers piece (nominal equivalent to the English "sixpence" but bronze), this type is called "dardanne" and was struck only under Louis XIV of France (1643-1715), I think in the few last years of his reign. In the center of the triangle there is a letter, it is the mintmark, it seems to be "K", which is Bordeaux mint. They are rare in high grade but common in worn condition. I recall a "dardanne" was one of my firts "ancient" coins when I was about 10 or 11 years old, my aunt bought it for me in a flea market here in Buenos Aires!

That particular French coin was made from melted down old naval guns. So the metal in your coin was a naval canon from a ship of Louis the thirteenth or even earlier.

Nicola I do so enjoy your videos. I left England in 1958, as a child, when my parents emigrated to Australia, but I have always missed England (or what I remember of her). I haven't been able to return, athough I would have liked to. I knew nothing about mudlarking until I chanced upon one of your videos and then subscribed. Mudlarking looks really interesting and so much fun, and I wish I could be there with you. So thank you for doing the videos the way you do so that I can pretend for a while that I am mudlarking too 🙂.

Another wonderful video, Nic 👍 Those coins were amazing. Also, St. Louis, MO, and (pretty sure) Louisville, KY, were also named for Louis XIV.
On a side note, I want to thank you for continuing to take us on your mudlarking adventures, especially during this past year. Yours was the first mudlarking channel that I found and followed years ago, and you’ve taught me so much about the hobby just by watching your vids. They’ve been a wonderful and welcomed distraction during this crazy past year for sure - I love how you point the video at the foreshore and encourage us to look for the finds. I think I can speak for many of us that your videos have allowed us to escape the immediacy of our daily reality and feel like we’re in a real adventure. You’re providing a real service, and I thank you very much.

Beautiful video! I particularly liked the lights on the water at the end. The link between coins and pipes was very nice; who knows, perhaps those coins bought pipes! In any case, I loved the symmetry of the two trios; it was, as you said, very satisfying. Seeing your videos come up on Sunday each week is a treat for me-- I always make a mug of tea and sit here across the pond and then some (I live in Arizona), drinking my Earl Grey and watching you hunt for treasures and history. May you continue to do so as long as you love it, and may Mother River continue to favor you.

    Nicola,
This was an excellent video, I loved your finds and your information, it added so much to the presentation.
I follow the Mudpies from Bristol, Father and Daughter, I commented on their new mud christened shirts and how the mud was
able to preserve so many things.
Josie wrote back and said it's really more a clay rather than mud, but claying the Thames or Thames Clay larkers really doesn't work:)
That poor Cormorant, I wondered if it would be able to ingest that Flatfish, but I wasn't surprised the enterprising gull got it!
It's a bird eats fish existence.
    Cheers,
    Rik Spector

It’s amazing how much those coins clean up with a little electrolysis! The triangle coin looks a lot like a mason symbol. Great finds! How much would a coin like these be worth?

Nic have you ever tried a rubbing of the coins to see if they reproduce a design. Take a piece of light weight paper over the coin and use a soft lead pencil or crayon or oil pastel cover coin with paper and rub with pencil and see what comes up.

Nice clip again! Sorry for your boots. But it was real funny, after beginning to watch that clip i thought "Is she still wearing her pink hunter wellies without any cracks, in them?" And then at min 18:30 there was the answer lol. But those boots must have been very lucky to last that long. Normally Hunters will crack within the first 6 months and that without much using. If you buy yourself new boots you should look to get the "Aigle Parcours" because they will last forever and have a real footbed for walking very long distances. The Hunters are like skiing boots compared to the Aigles! Just try amazon to find them often at very cheap prices!

Could your tapered wooden staff be the final atop a flag pole or ship or boat mast, it would certainly stop birds landing on it.

  • @chrisosh9574
    @chrisosh9574 3 года назад +8

I am pretty sure the pointy stick is a flag staff from the stern of a boat, the metal piece on the foot looks as though it is fluted to fit into a matching socket that would have been on the stern.

My younger brother passed away recently, and every time I see a shiny penny I think of him. I’m not sure what the connection is, I just sense his presence! His name was Nathaniel.

It's a bit dark but seems to me like 3 men were disposed of in the thames and these items were in their pockets, seems too coincidental to have the coins and pipes so close to eachother from the same era ^-^
