- Join me as I go mudlarking along the River Thames in London - and see what pieces of London's history have been washed out by the tide.
If you want to try mudlarking you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. Details to be found here:-

I so respect the fact you return things that are meant to be returned to the river for whoever it was meant for.
I’ve no idea how this ended up in my recommendations and I've less idea why I started watching it, but boy I'm glad I did.
So much fascinating stuff, real stuff that real people used. Some of the pottery was staggeringly interesting, and how does a bullet break into pieces but all the pieces remained in the same place. However it happened it was a big piece of lead to hit anyone with.
An absolutely fascinating video, made all the more fascinating by an expert who seems to have a true empathy with those who went before.
You know when a passing interest turns into a passion when you start googling "Mudlark ,Nicola White , Thames Mud,Ceramic shards"and you see it as another branch of Archeology and History and your heart sings when UTube suggests Nicola might be of interest .....and it is .Thank you Nicola you're a delight
Ah that's so nice Ralph! Thank you
I enjoy these videos, we mudlarks in the USA love 💘 your videos and Happy New Years 😀
How cool that a spoon from my home town ended up in London! I currently live only one block away from where the Genesee Hospital School of Nursing had been located. I am also on track to becoming a nurse myself! I watch your videos to relax for a few minutes in between by crazy work and school schedule. Thank you for posting such fascinating finds!
Ha ha!
I was just thinking - Nicola could make a random Thames necklace, adding found beads after each mud larking adventure, and then you said the same thing 😂❤
Each bead or couple of beads you add would be decided by the river, designed by river.
You could get some plain beads and use them to space out each addition. That way you could see how many beads you had found on each mud lark.
Ooooooo, I’m so envious, I have so many ideas for assembling finds. I just love watching your discoveries and hearing about any history you uncover in your research etc.
❤
I LOVE it, thanks for sharing your videos. So appreciated.
🙂🐿❤️🌈
Bottle digger tip- soak bottle with dish soap, pour a small amt. of dry rice inside half full of water/ plug bottle, and shake until clean inside. Rice won't hurt the bottle, and cleans a treat.
Your fascination with that spider really shows your amazing curiosity for even the smallest things.
I love your videos, really relaxing and refreshing.
Nice thought about returning the "tag" to the Thames from "Terry" Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Beautiful, Nicola. That bottle is exquisite, as is the pipe bowl. As for the pottery with ‘tr’ on it, I think you’ve found the coat of arms of the Triffids, judging by the foliage! Merry Christmas, and may your new year be filled with intact clay pipes of rare design.
Much more pleasant being with you Nicola!
Merry Christmas to you and yours! The crow is a sacred animal to Cherokee and Native American Indians. Wise, mischievous and jovial, a true wise bird . You have a great protector there in friend crow. Love the tall blue glass bottle too. Very pretty. And the spider is keeping your windows clean of flying insects. Love his cross design on his back.
Merry Christmas Nicola. Thank you for lovely contribution to my life. I love your vids and look forward to each new one. I live in Australia and am envious how you can find such old relics with such ease. Hope you have a great New Year. P.S. I could listen to your gentle voice for hours.
Happy Christmas Nicola. Thank you for the gift of your videos.
Merry Christmas Nicola thanks for the lovely walks and for including the Christmas spider!
Alanna Penner the Christmas spider is certainly a wonderful surprise! Very good luck I hear.
If you look closely at the pottery fragment it says TRA. Maybe that will help with identifying it. I watched this with my kitten and he kept hitting the screen and pausing the video when the flying seagulls were on. We both loved the video and wish you a Merry and Furry Christmas! ☃🐈💝
Merry Christmass Nicola, you and your video have helped to raise my mood today Thank you so much.
Merry Christmas to you too Scott. Love from London xx
Your videos are so soothing. I wish we could touch the items we find and see a brief history on them. Merry Christmas and may you find an intact onion jar next year! ( or the Holy Grail, your choice. 😊 )
Merry Christmas to my favourite river Womble!
USA HERE: Nicola, again a very nice video which excites me and also calms me at the same time. Merry Christmas and may your New Year be a peaceful and beautiful year. 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
Nicola, Thank you for all you do and all the hard work you put into it,From going out in the London weather to the editorial and amazing finds, all fantastic. I wish you an your loved one and everyone that follows you a Happy and Very Merry Christmas.
Your videos have such a peaceful feeling, so enjoyable. Love the basket weave bowl. How nice throwing the tag back in the Thames. Merry Christmas Nicola.
Nicola that red bead you found could be from fishing tackle, they use a lot of multi faceted red needs in the industry.
I really liked it when you changed to Pink Wellies, I have watched other mudlarker videos and way off in the background I could see an indistinct figure, with pink boots on. Your look is famous. Love your show beautiful Mudlarker, keep bringing up the history!!
The basket weave pipe is my favourite that you have shown me since my addiction began. So perfect too. Well done!
I love your videos and the history lessons and your love for finding treasure. Thank you for sharing what you do.You are some kind of special.
Thank you xx
Having looked on ancestry there was a Terry passed away march 1996
Could be a pet.
The cartridge is a .577 for the Snider Enfield rifle, the first successful metalic cartridge used by the British, it came after the P53 Enfield muzzle loader and was replaced by the 577/450 Martini Henry. Your cartridge would date to the 1870's or there about.
WRXS She has a .577 Snider round she found, this one looks like the .450 for the Martini. Her Snider round is almost strait walled, this one has a more pronounced neck. They both used the same case...the .450 was necked down.
Two votes for the .450 Martini Henry. Interesting find.
@@colarisaka Dustin thank you for the comment, as a collector and a reloader for the Snider and the Martini Henry I can assure you this is a .577 Snider cartridge, when new or resized the Snider case has a taper at the case mouth, also the projectile in Nicola"s hand is much larger than a .45 cal Martin Henry projectile.
Does the primer look functional or has water rendered its powder's impotent? @@kawonnowak
WRXS It may be, but I know the Snider case was necked down for the .450 Martini bullet.... scale is difficult to comprehend when seeing anything in a video. I think it's a .450 Martini round, I could be wrong... You think its a .577 Snider round, you could be wrong! It doesn't matter.... But! I want to send Nicola a copy of the "Illustrated Ammunition" book, I'm watching a copy on eBay... maybe you could send her a 1000ths/MM pocket micrometer .... that'll keep us bullet nuts from ending up in pistol duels at 30 paces! :D Merry Christmas friend. (its a .577-.450!) :)
As always a lovely video 😀 Thanks so much for sharing. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and be well, stay safe and have a nice relaxing break.
Looking forward to your next video. Dave👍
Merry Christmas Nicola !
So lovely and relaxing! Thank you Nicola. 💜👏
That was lovely Nicola. Merry Christmas!
Hi Nicola, 2 years ago you did this video and now Christmas 2020 has just been and gone. How ironical l am seeing your video now when Christmas has just gone. I ADORED that little fine aqua bottle. It would make a lovely little bud vase for a single rose. I adore roses too. Lovely video you made, thank you so much, l do appreciate all your behind the scenes and research work that you put into them. Happy New Year Nicola sweetie. Janice from Australia. Xxxx 😎
Merry Christmas And Happy New Year!!!.when you found the bullet there's a coin under the cable and a fancy white heart there too!!, thanks for story's!!!
great video ,every find tells a story, have a great Christmas Nicola.
Merry Christmas Nicola and all your followers.
I agree with Genesee Hospital. I worked their and we had a display of historic items in lobby. Sadly the hospital has been closed for a long time now. I live in Rochester New York and was fascinated with the connection this is my 5th video watched have been total Geeki ! Thank You. Hope you continue putting out content . went to your art studio link no items .
We love your videos. Watching them is like an escape. Thanks, and a Merry Christmas to you.
Always enjoy your videos. I look forward to the next. Thanks for sharing your experiences. ATB for the coming year. Thanks Nicola.
Keep feeding your crow and he may bring you some treasure. They can be quit friendly and protective once they have adopted you. Hove a wonderful and safe holiday season.
true this.. no more searchin.. a murder of crow will lark all ya need! show one where you live and it's like a Amazon drone to your door.
My jackdaws have so far, brought me;
- a lot of little twigs, one at the time, always placed in the spot where the piece of bread was
- a lot of feathers, same story, always one
- a screw with two bolts on it
- Half of a wallnut-shell
- A plastic nerfgun-arrow
- And yesterday (23-5-2020) a piece of folded aluminiumfoil
:)
Very enjoyable Nicola and all the best for the coming year may you have lots more beautiful and interesting finds in 2019

Captivating fun finds ♥️ History ♥️ Riversides ♥️ & all for throwing it back, that one piece,♥️ from ♥️land Illinois.Merry Merry
What a beautiful little bottle. Love it!!! I think that round is a 45/70. We shoot them quite often here across the pond.
enjoyed this adventure, nice finds, still trying to catch up on your older video's, take care Nic
The case and bullet you found looks just like a ".577 Snyder" round. Very common military and sporting round for the mid 19th century. Wonderful find.
In love with the basket case 💚
Yeah, me too...the pipes not bad either
@@sofa-lofa4241 I know, if only someone would make a subtle joke about it! 😆😉😈✌
I enjoyed your video and really love the pretty blue bottle.
What a treasure hunters dream to be able to have that river!
All the joys of the season, Nicola. A very Merry, Muddy Christmas to you and yours. Put a wee splash of peppermint schnapps in your hot chocolate and enjoy the day. ;-))
Like your posts. Thanks for sharing this hobby. Very similar to picking up arrow points and pot shards from plowed fields here in Tennessee.
Ok I'm am totally addicted to this channel and want to do this when I visit London again! Greetings from the states!
Have a blessed Christmas full of joy and love with loved ones! Thanks for sharing.
Lovely ,and Merry Christmas Nicola.
Merry Christmas Nicola. Blessings from above to you. Love your videos and the ancient history you guys have. Actually a little envious. My folks came from Holland after the war. Lots of historical items found in Holland too ....thanks
Merry Christmas Nicola! Thank you for sharing your adventures.
Happy holidays. May the larks be with you in the coming year.
Fantastic-I loved the beads and the coins James
Thanks for feeding the birds, You are about to make a great find, it’s in the stars............
Here in Denmark, we don't have any mudlarking spots. Our harbors are straight up and down jettys, no 'beach-like' qualities about them
...and our beaches have no mudlarking qualities, either. So I live to mudlark, through your videos!
Have a wonderful 2019, and thank you for taking us, along on your journey 🎉⚓🕸🐾❤
Nicola, a nice recap on your findings. The spider is without doubt a female Diadem Spider and the cross on her back is the give-away. She will get bigger and bigger and then one day she will disappear to a more sheltered place lay her eggs. Fascinating creatures, enjoy her company.
Merry Christmas from Cornwall and good hunting for the new year.
Roy
Merry Christmas Nicola and a Happy New Year !
I was born in Rochester. My aunt graduated from that school which has now been torn down after they spent millions upgrading the place they shut the hospital down which was a stupid thing to do.I lived in the little hamlet like of Charlotte. It is situated on the southern shore of Lake Ontario . The cartridge you found looks like a .44-.40 cartridge used in handguns and lever action rifles.
Happy Christmas Nicola, thank you for sharing a years worth of discoveries, really looking forward to 2019s surprises.
Hi Nicola, thanks yet again for another great video. I think that little signet ring could be 9ct gold (375) or Sterling Silver (925) although England may be a bit different. It would be marked to one side on the inside of the ring. They were not deep impressions so it may be filled up with mud and the like. Appears to be fairly recent in style, good luck!
Great finds as always. The basket weave pipe bowl is lovely. x
Thank you Nicola. Here’s wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas as well!
The basket weaved pipe was amazing you found today! Wow!! Soooo unique! I have never seen you find a pipe like this yet! ( : It has a decent amount of stem left too! ( : That is funny you found the pottery with TR! You foundy.old pot! Yayyyyyyy! ( : Lol! ( : Those arey initials! ( :
That weaved pipe is beautiful
Thank you so much for the lovely videos, Nicola! Always enjoy watching your discoveries. Would love to see a time lapse showing one of your clay pipes fading from the black to that ivory color once out of the Thames - it’s hard for me to picture that drastic change happening all on its own! Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year!
Nicola, A couple of your finds made me think of the Christmas song, "Christmas Is Coming", with the lyrics: (Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat Please put a penny in the old man's hat If you haven't got a penny, a ha'penny will do If you haven't got a ha'penny, then God bless you!)
Between the penny & ha'penny you found, you're all set! :)
Nice video & finds...Merry Christmas everyone
Merry Christmas Nicola White I might be a new subscriber to this channel but I am always interested in what people find (even if that does make me jealous)
just make sure the fame dosent get to you and you always follow your passion.
I know a famous treasure hunter channel that I feel like is doing it more for fame than their passion.
Which I feel like it a bit disrespectul to the comunity of relic seeker like mudlarking and metal detector.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS NICOLA 🎄
Thanks for all your great interesting videos through 2018 - here’s to more in 2019 😃
SandMan J
Merry Christmas Nicola from the heart of the Sonoran Desert in the American southwest. Jack
Love the blue bottle and the basket weave pipe. Merry Christmas to you Nicola!
Nice to see you out just before Christmas. I am hoping to make it to Britain sometime maybe we can meet. I metal detecting as well.
Joyeux Noël chère Nichola and merci beaucoup pour vos aventures si passionnantes 👍🏻😍🎄
Have a lovely Xmas Nicola, thanks for entertaining me all year, all the best for 2019
The sparkly fingernails are quite festive. Maybe Santa will put you in my stocking this year! I've been very good too.
Hi Nicola. In my opinion your little blue bottle was from around 1860 ish.....The portion above the rim was hand applied. There is a seam mark, but its below the rim. If I had to guess I'd say it was a hand blown bottle into a mold, then the top portion was blown and flared out, separately, which is why the upper portion of the bottle looks a little wonky....
Hi Nicola. Great video again. Love the basket weave pipe. Your nail varnish very festive. Look forward to the next video. A happy Christmas to you and a very good 2019.
Great video again Nicola, cartridge looks like a .577 Snider 1880 ish. Happy Christmas!!
Thank you! Happy Christmas
I agree it sure looks like it.
Just chiming in to agree that it is most likely a .577 Snider cartridge.
@@nicolawhitemudlark, hi nicola if i get a permit can i come mudlarking with you?
James x
A Snider case would be a .577" straight-sided (well, very slightly tapered) cylinder. Your case, Nic, has a neck-down (like a bottle). Please see my later answer about the Martini-Henry cartridge.
beautiful bottle....amazing how it survived the Thames
Nicola i go mudlarking in the Boston harbor so cool wen i find a old bottle, or plate fragment, i found a awesome Coca Cola bottle yesterday, but u are lucky on the pipes so cool thanks for the vid o ya your lucky and pretty thats a good combo take care pipe lady.
awesome finds again nic a merry christmas to you and your family bring on 2019
the basket weave pipe is one of the most lovely I have seen you pull. with the rope like design on the stem it feels like a fisherman / shellfish man would have liked this. I think you are correct about the spoon coming with a service woman during the war. I sometimes wonder if the rings you find are the result of casting away after a relationship break-up
At 4:33 you have a Martini Henry, 577/450 round. The Henry was used throughout the Britih Empire from 1871-1889. Estimated number of rifles produced is half to one million. Popular in the antique-collectors' field. Some of th later Martini rifles were converted to the new .303 round.
The Stubbs pipe - there may well be absolutely no connection, but up here in Warrington there is an engineering firm called Peter Stubbs, which makes engineers rasps and files, and some wire products. - - - All the Best for Christmas and New Year.
I've seen scent bottles like that before, they go inside the neck of dolls, teddy bears etc that sit on dressing tables. ☺
That yellow heart object reminds me of the special buttons my mom would sew on to knit sweaters she made for me.
Thanks for another interesting video.Have a great Christmas and a happy and successful mudlarking New Year.
Happy Christmas Nicola, thanks for your fascinating videos!
Merry Christmas Nicola🎄
Pipes are so interesting. This one is so beautiful. Thanks for comparing the two different "weaves."
That bottle...🙂
Have a Merry Christmas!
Another great video Nicola. We find the Rodgers eating utensils everywhere here. The piece of porcelain blue with figures and Chinese writings. My grandmother had the whole set. The art on them tell a old Chinese Romeo and Juliet story. The two main characters turn into doves at the end. They fly with peace and love forever.
Love the art work you done with your finds.
Merry Christmas
May the spirit of peace and love be with you.
From Tameside to Thames-side!
Tameside General Hospital is in Ashton-under-Lyne. Serves the area of Tameside in Greater Manchester, and the town of Glossop and other smaller towns and villages in the north western part of the High Peak district of Derbyshire.
Originally the Aston District Infirmary, founded by Samuel Oldham in 1861. Oldham’s stated intention in founding Ashton District Infirmary was to create an institution "for the relief and cure of sick and indigent persons resident, employed, or having been employed within 3½ miles of Ashton Town Hall." It became the Ashton-under-Lyne General Hospital on the formation of the National Health Service in 1948 and it became Tameside General Hospital in 1976.
Merry Christmas from across the pond
Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year to you Nicola and your family xx
Hi Nicola, yes definitely Micraster sea urchin from the Cretaceous period.
