Peace Lily Re-Potting & Propagation Part 1

- Part 1 of 2 videos of my Peace Lily Propagation and re-potting. Peace lilies are one of the best houseplants because peace lilies can tolerate low light and infrequent watering. Peace Lilies are one of the best houseplants that are easy to maintain and easy to propagate. Peace lilies are rated by NASA Scientists to be among the best indoor air purifying plants.
I will show you how to re-pot, propagate, and divide peace lilies into planters to display how elegant these plants can be.
I love this video
Good morning, Redorchids,
I hope you are having a good morning. Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. I appreciate your kind words. Peace Lilies have become one of my favorite plants.

Very nice.
Thank you, my friend. It looks like they will soon require repotting again. I didn't think I would love this plant as much as I do, but they are so easy to care, that I feel happy
Very nice peace lilies. I like your soil mixture and thanks for the tip about using regular soil on top because the perlite floats and will encourage bugs, love that one! Thanks👍🏽
Thank you😊 It seems like common sense, but I actually had to experience it before I figured it out.
That was new to me but it made great sense to me so I am doing it that way now. I learn something from Gerald's vid every time.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. My huge plant was completely full of roots. Even the sides, up to the surface. There was really no soil to see. I cut an inch off the sides and bottom so it would fit back in the original pot that is 14 in. Poor thing. It looks the same 3 yrs later, a little taller but has not spread. I am glad you showed two different pots that you grew the same way so we could see the difference in how they chose to grow, up or spreading.
Good morning, my friend
I love these plants. They grow well under many different circumstances. I think my large Peace Lily is root bound because it dries out very fast and it's been almost a year. Plants seem to grow fast in Hawaii. I am still trying to find time to repot these plants.
I hope you have a great week, and I wish you happiness and good health always,
Gerald:)
Thank you for teaching us about the peace Lily! I laughed when you said you don’t baby them anymore. LOL. I have never even heard of orchid bark before, so that was interesting!
52naturalhairstyles : 😊 I tend to be a bit too empathetic towards plants 🙃 😂.
Orchid bark is the wood chips/wood bark that is used to grow orchids as a growth medium. It's common in my area because a lot of people grow orchids in Hawaii. I suppose on the mainland/more temperate climates, wood mulch would do the same function 🤓
Thank you for your support 😊 I hope to chat with you again 😊
Thanks for the down to earth information we learnt a lot .
Beautiful and decorative plants👍
Cool video!
Obrigado
Thank you for the video. Very good information. I life in Scotland, UK so if I left the peace lily out side it would be dead overnight even just now at the start of June. I’ve been to Hawaii on my honeymoon 18 years ago a very nice place my favourite holiday ever but I didn’t want to go home. Love from Scotland x
Hello, Vanessa :)
Aloha from Hawaii! My grandkids are part Irish... I watched a RUclips video of someone from Scotland or Ireland said that Americans don't know there's a difference between Irish and Scottish, but I know. Scotland is the highlands above Britain. You have an amazing history and culture. My best friend grandparents are from Scotland - J. McBee.... do you know him? 🙂 Joking🤣😆😄
Is Hans Mortensen a Scottish name? My other friend traced his lineage back through colonial ships that came to Hawaii in the 1800s. I vaguely remember him telling me about his kilt was made from a different design compared to other Scottish families that settled north of the island. I was in college at the time and my attention was fickle, but I know there's a parade where they march in kilts and play bagpipes.
I hope you are doing well. Wishing you happiness and good health always. It's very nice to meet you...
Take care, my friend
Gerald:)
I just received 4 peace lillies from a neighbor and this has helped so much. She gave them to me because the leaves were yellowing and browning, but I think I can bring it back. Hopefully they'll look as good as yours with time. Great video!
Hello Sheila,
Aloha from Hawaii.
I love this plant. A very good friend gave me a bunch of Chinese Evergreens, but they kept getting mealy bugs, so I bought my first peace lily... with the information that NASA Scientist rate it among the best air purifiers, and I love these plants.
They do best in bright indirect light, and they like to be dry between watering.
You're gong to love these plants.

That’s one big healthy peace lily , that what I do I mixed perlite and compost soil and succulent soil for more drainage too. It’s seems all my plants liking the mix ideas.
WhAt Is aLl AbOut : Good morning, my grind 😊 I'm happy you liked the video. 😃 Thank you for your friendship 😊.
I'm re-doing my videos because I was told the audio was too soft. By experience, I am getting better at video and audio editing 🤓
I noticed my plants like perlite better as well. Sometimes I wish they would just make the soil that way😑, but they would charge more money😠, so I guess it's better that we make it ourselves 😊
Yes, I agree , in my experienced plants like it mix . I have a friend gave me plant and I watered it once a week and I noticed the plant is dying when I check the dirt we’re too wet at the bottom but the top is too dry even though there’s a draining hole .,so what I did is repotted the plant with the mix I made and the plants is more happy and healthy .
@@JustMyra 🙂 Some times some plants need more time to understand, but we're always learning 🤓 Problem salving is part of the fun when I'm successful in solving the problem 😊 Take carea and have a safe and happy New Years.

Same here. So glad I found this channel.
Awesome video!! Thank You! I have a Peace Lily from my brothers funeral who died 28 years ago! My mother kept it all those years, but she just passed away a month ago, so now this beautiful plant is in my care. I know that she didn't really do a trying but water it the past few years, so it's in need of new soil and a bigger pot. It's doing 'OK', but not great. Your video has given me the confidence to go ahead and dive in! Again, thank you! 🤗
Hello, Royal
I envy you. I wish I had more to hold onto. I frequently think of my family who has passed on. You have a very important plant.
These plants are hardy. Keep them out of direct light, especially if they are recovering from repoting or drought.
Make sure you let is dry between waterings - over-watering is the biggest killer of houseplants.
It'll take a few days to a few weeks for it to settle into it's new pot. Hold off in fertilizing until the plant has settled, and use half the dose and wait a few weeks... don't want to stress such an important plant.
thank yo for visiting and for taking the time to comment.

I like the title of your vlog...Plants are really a therapy.....Peace lily is one of my favorites
Many thanks for sharing this, especially regarding soil, really helpful. I had no idea about final layer of simple compost! I just wondered whether or not the decorative stones might not also attract unwanted insects, as moisture is trapped between soil and stones? It looks lovely. Just had a ficus plant and found I had to remove stones. I have to re pot a lily so this was really helpful.
You have my sympathy ...In the UK we are all fed up with expensive utility bills, council tax etc. The trouble is that services never really improve, and none of us can retire either :) ... .I'll leave it there! Thanks again!
Good morning, Christine,
It is somewhat "serendipitous" (a word I never use) that halfway around the world, people are concerned with the very things that I worry.
I never had any major problems with fungus gnats, as long as I let the soil dry between watering. I did have problems with 'root rot,' so I had to adjust my potting routines. I guess, everything is a learning process, and even though most techniques are transferable, adjustments sometimes are necessary.
I wish you a happy Memorial Day,
Gerald
Another good video👍 Thanks for sharing.
😊 Thank you, Marites 😁 I appreciate you visiting 😊I wish you and your family a safe and happy New Years 💥💥💥
I thought your instructions and video very interesting. I recently obtained a spath plant after the owner died. Leafs were wilted, brown and curled up. I am trying to save the poor thing, but didn't know much about the care of it. Gave it a good watering, trimmed the dead leafs, added some soil and so far I haven't killed it. After this video I feel like it might survive me. Wish me luck.
Hello Ruth,
I think you're the fourth person who has told me that they have inherited a Peace Lily. I think this is a wonderful memorial.
I think you did the right thing: trim the dead leaves, replenish the soil, keep out of direct light, water only when dry. If you live in an arid area, sit out of water atop pebbles with water.
I've nursed a couple of peace lilies back to health. One took a couple of months, but it looks great. Of course non is as sentimental as yours.
Take care, Ruth :) thank yo for visiting and taking the time to comment. It means alot.

Hello, Linette
Aloha from Hawaii! I hope you are having a good day. Thank yo for subscribing. I really appreciate the support and it's very encouraging. For the longest time I only had a handful of subscribers, but in the past few months, I have met a lot of very nice people on RUclips. Life has been a challenge lately, and I haven't been able to upload any video, but I will soon. I fear I've gotten rusty in the past two months.
The weather in Hawaii has been very hot and humid. I think Orlando is about the same level above the equator. I've visited the Philippines and my gosh! I only now understand what "tropical heat" really is. Hawaii isn't as bad because of the trade winds, but the Philippines... when they opened the plane door, a wave of heat rolled into the plane... I thought the plane had caught fire. When I took a shower, I only used cold water, and it was fine, but as soon as I turned off the water, it felt like I had just walked into someone else's steamy bath.
I know, I know... I talk too much :)
Thank you again for visiting and taking the time to comment... it is very encouraging :)

I’ve repotted many houseplants but this is going to be my first Peace Lily. I’m very grateful that I landed on this one in my search because it feels like I’ve found a kindred spirit in your naturalistic approach to the art of house plants! So thank you very much for taking the time to engage in your worldview and yes, Our world is indeed getting hotter as global warming continues to be unchecked by our government in particular right now. Many blessings! 🌈💕
Good morning Sunny,
You have indeed found a kindred spirit. I have been worried about global warming since I was a teenager. I've been an avid recycler until lately. I have been propagating houseplants and encouraging houseplant for years in promotion of healthier breathing indoor air.
By myself, little can be done, but I believe there must be more of us.
Take care, my friend

For me its easier to separate when the soil is more on the dry side.
I had this same issue with mine, it grew up not out, so separated it and it was one big root ball but I now have two pots with peace lilies and they are doing great. Even have a few peices in my fish tank.
Good morning, Alexis,
I'm on a mission to change my life to be easier. I usually try to go through extra steps - which means extra effort/time/fuss, but I am on a mission to make my life more simpler.
I just got through separating my peace lilies into two plants, and I did it the dry way - as you mentioned, and the plants are doing fine. I had them outside under the bright shade/indirect light, and I only brought them into the house today.
Thank you for visiting, and thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope yo have a wonderful weekend,

@@PlantsaremyTherapy That's awesome! I'm glad you gave it a try and even more happier that your plants are doing great!
Aloha. New to your posting but we do not recommend newspaper in the bottom of our house plants. The acid from the paper is bad enough but the inks (especially any color production ink or dyes for photographs) offer and present additional problems I our experience. A dark drainage cloth or similar is our recommendation. Gravel and crushed or broken shells are also excellent. And since you live in Hawaii, coconut husk or fiber is even better in opinion. Keep up the planting and all the best. Aloha
Good morning, Triton,
Aloha from Hawaii. Those are very good points. I will keep them in mind. I'm actually changing my potting method.

@@PlantsaremyTherapy What are you changing your potting method to? Is there a new video with this method? Thank you.
Omg so beautiful! I live in Michigan where it’s still freezing cold in March! I could never grow plants this beautiful
Hello, Helene. I hope you stay warm. It's beginning to heat up in the tropics. I was always thinking that if I lived in a temperate climate, I'd grow peach trees because I love peaches, but peaches that are shipped to Hawaii are dry and tasteless. I had peaches in California, and the juice was running down my arm, but reality is different. I always wanted a mango tree in Hawaii, but my association won't allow large canopy trees in my neighborhood.
I appreciate your kind and encouraging words. Thank you for visiting. I hope you have a safe and warmed spring :)

Hello: You have a wonderful voice and a natural talent for videos. I am interested in epiphytic plants (other than orchids). Do you have any, and if so, would you consider making a video? My passion is hoyas. Look forward to your next video.
I had a few air plants. Many friends at work collect them. A friend of mine had hundreds of them, and someone broke into her yard and stole them all, so I gave her all of mine... it was becoming a chore and my life was entering a "hectic phase'. I will try to see if I have any pictures of them. I saw a few outside on my tree that still remains, but they're nothing like they once were.

Aloha from Hawaii!
I hope you are well. This “quarantine” is taking it’s toll on me. Honolulu just imposed an 11pm to 5am curfew. It makes me curious to go exploring to see who's out and about, which is a bad idea because Honolulu has a lot of police officers who love overtime.
It's been a tough several months preceding Covid19, so my peace lilies have suffered, but they're still alive.
Hope things are going well in your area. Frequent hand washing and social distancing seems to be the craze nowadays! I'm still in the novel phase of it all. Try to remain positive :)
Wishing you strength and good health,
Friends,
Gerald😊
Can’t wait to try your soil recipe! I’ve got gnat issues and now I know why. Great video!
Good morning, my friend. Aloha from Hawaii. I hope you are having a good morning.
I know some people say it's too fussy, but I like it. If you are a beginner, I would suggest just using one part perlite to two parts potting soil. I am no longer putting a layer of gravel to the bottom of my pots.
Gnats: let the soil dry our completely to kill the gnat larvae, but if your plant cannot tolerate dry soil, put a layer of sand on top, and let is dry as long as the plant can tolerate. This should take care of the gnat problem.
Thank you for visiting. I hope you have a great day
Gerald:)
Gerald :)
Plants are my Therapy thanks for the advice! The only thing that worries me about putting an inch or 2 of sand, is that it’ll attract my cats even more! Hahaha would a layer of lava rock or pebbles work? I thought rocks would retain moisture and keep the gnat problem going tho
ExJW Survivor : I assume your gnat problem is not in a pot, mouth a flower bed. Make sure it is gnats. If they are gnats, and you have a flower bed or large pot to "treat," maybe a layer of sand on the bottom and pebbles on top? Or cheaper, as layer of sand and then covered with garden fabric. The gnats larvae should be dead within a couple of days, and you can remove the fabric.
Good luck, cats are smart and gnats, what they lack in intelligence, they make up in numbers.
Plants are my Therapy the gnats fly out of the soil in my pots when I stick my fingers in to check the moisture level. Some of my pots are larger (like for my fiddle leafs or for my palms), and those are the ones my cats like to dig up 😾 I had lava rock on the top before but they kept fishing them out and playing with them. I think I’d rather have that problem than the gnats tho haha
Gardening/Planting is my passion especially when i get bored and stress because its the place where i find peace. That's why i love your channel, i wish we were neighbors. If one day i win lottery right away i will buy a farm hahahahaha oh dreaming here 🥲gardening/planting helps me relax and unwind while connecting the nature that sorrounds you.

Aloha from Hawaii!
I agree. Just looking at plants make life seem a little more peaceful. I like gardening. It keeps me productive... and ME TOO! I dreamed of winning a lottery and buying a huge farm to grow fruit trees and lots of plants, and have chickens and goats ( and afford a farmhand for the chickens and goats)! I hope, and I know I'm older, so I know the chances are very slim, but I hope I can one day retire on a big farm.

i like your ideas for using soil, gravel, cinder, and I will ask at home depot about what else I can use. Thank you.
Hi Norma,
I am in the process of trying to make my life simpler. Most of the time I overthink things. I think I'm going to amend my soil recipe to be potting mix/Perlite-v-vermiculite/sand and see how that goes. This should keep costs down and maintain adequate drainage and aeration throughout the soil... however, these lilies are thriving! They are ready to be trimmed. I'll keep you updated.
Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. It is very encouraging for me. I really appreciate it.
Friends,
Gerald:)
Maybe you have have different experience, but if my peace lilly isn't drenched everyday, it starts browning. I'm moving mine into a full water container - no soil. Many people have success doing this. I've never heard of them being over watered or to wait for it to dry before watering like you said...but the plant could act different where you live.
Hello, Arielle, Aloha from Hawaii.
These plants can grow in water or in soil, but if they are in soil, they need to dry out so the roots have a chance to breathe and aerobic bacteria would have a chance to thrive. Anaerobic bacteria is what makes this foul spoiled egg smell that isn't very good for most plants. I've killed a few plants this way. I thought of growing plants only in water, but I live in the tropics, so mosquitoes are a real problem/health risk. I am getting annoyed with Hawaii's unusual hot summer. It seems like the sun has gotten hotter. Many of my garden plants are burning. I divided a Peace Lily and usually I don't have any problems, but they are beginning to brown - and I like the lush green leaves more than the flowers.
When I lived in California City, north of Mojave Junction and right below Death Valley ("The High Desert"), I had to water my mother's pothos daily because the air was so dry, the plant would be wilting by late afternoon if I forgot...
Anyways,
Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to comment. I think I'm going to water my plants more frequently until the weather changes.
Wishing you happiness and good health always,
Gerald:)
I miss your videos
Hope you’re doing good & the grandkids are good as well
Hello Iddy Biddy
It's been a struggle. Things are calming now that most of them are exiting their teen years. I'm having so much trouble with the younger ones. It's been a challenge!
Thank you for thinking of me. I really appreciate it
Much love and aloha
Gerald:)
@@PlantsaremyTherapy we are having major issues with my oldest (he has autism) because he’s turning 22 in December he might need to be placed in a home. We have been trying to care for him but it’s been getting tougher. We can’t throw him over our shoulders anymore lol

Hello,
Sometimes my thoughts wonder while gardening
Wishing you happiness and good health always,
Gerald😊
Thanks Uncle! I learned a lot! My peace lily is my house plant in Kaneohe. I nearly lost it bc I wasn't watering enough before tossing it out I miraculously revived it but since then, I have not had a new bloom in over a year. Is that normal?
Hello, Joy :)
I'm glad you were able to revive your peace lily. They're very good plants... seems to be very forgiving. They are also one of the best air purifiers... according to NASA Scientists.
I like the lush leaves, but a lot of people like the blooms as well. I don't look at the blooms of this plant as something to look forward to, but I am happy when they bloom:
The blooms tell me that the plant is getting enough light, but it also can mean that it's pot-bound, and will soon require repotting, but these plants can do very well pot bound.
Once the plant settles/fully recovers and gets enough indirect light, it will bloom.
I'm against GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms), but if they can genetically modify these blooms to have color... pink or yellow etc... or maybe glow in the dark!
Thank yo for visiting and wishing you good health and happiness always
Gerald:)
Thanks for this, it was excellent
Watch betsy begonia's video on the perched water table. It shows why gravel doesn't help the drainage. Well draing soil helps drainage :)
That was so helpful, thanks!! 🙌🏼
I hear you about the water fees. Sewer tax capital tax and sewer and capital tax on top of your water fees here in Alden N.Y.! All Political! Mayors pockets are being lines! Thank you for info very informative!
I can't handle anymore politics for a while. It's been exhausting. From the pandemic to the election. I need a break.
This past year has been challenging and I hope you are well.
Wishing you happiness and good health always,
Gerald:)

I was new to this... actually, I'm still new to RUclips. I had to "verify" my account - which I did.
I'm listening to your music right now :)
It made perfect to not top dress with the soil mixed with perlite. I also find after many waterings the little white particles that look like styrofoam is covering the top of the soil. I like that idea of putting orchid mix into the soil as well. Thanks for the straightforward explanations for why you do what you do. Can you tell me if you use cocoa peet or not? what is the use in it?
tks! Now subscribing😏
Hello, Westminster
Aloha from Hawaii! I hope you had a good morning.
Thank you for your kind words. I use perlite because I have a lot of clay in my area, but from now on, I'm being more careful because you're absolutely correct in the layer of perlite after watering. It's very annoying! From now on, the perlite would be used only on the bottom soil and compost throughout. I'm currently all about composting.
Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment. It means a great deal to me.
Wishing you happiness and good health always,
Gerald😊
@@PlantsaremyTherapy great idea. I must try that as well.
I lost 2 of my children this past July.
I choose to place peace lillies on either side of their resting place during the celebration of their life.
I took one and my daughter took the other home. Its so sad that neither one is doing well. The leaves are turning pale, then completely yellow. These plants were very tall, deep green, and healthy . I have even bought a humidifier and recently repotted it as a last resort. I can tell you it was root bound. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance
One more thing. The roots on these plants were not white in color like your are. They were more off white/ yellow/ dark
