      Zalman Blaier. Yes! These days there seem to be quite a number of excellent chamber music pianists, pianists who know when to take the lead and when not to. Frank Dupree strikes me as a prime example. Piano Trios, Piano Quartets & Piano Quintets NEED pianists like him, like Itamar Golan, like Dejan Lazic (the guy who looks like the former Barça footballer Xavi Hernández). Also Connie Shih and Francis Grier.

    The Scherzo is amazing, full of intensity and great constrasts between the piano and the rest of the instruments, ff and pp, long ans short notes, soft and sweet passages and powerfull strokes. I enjoyed it very much specially because I just heard it for the first time in my life.

    Una interpretación absolutamente descomunal, soberbia, espectacular. Todo en esta interpretación está en el lugar correcto. Los tempi son perfectos, la atención al cuidado en el fraseo y los contrapuntos son alucinantes. Pero sobre todo, y en esto se diferencia de todas las otras versiones en RUclips, el carácter y la lectura global son descomunales. No sólo son todas las notas que Brahms escribió, es también ese espíritu de madurez interpretativa que pocas veces encuentra uno en un grupo de intérpretes. El grado de comprensión de la obra por parte de los intérpretes es simplemente ejemplar, desde el primer acorde uno sabe que está ante un grupo de intérpretes notabilísimos y que todo lo que sigue va a ser monumental majestuoso, como en efecto resulta ser. Un auténtico ejemplo de inteligencia y madurez interpretativa. ¡Bravo!

    I listened to this brilliant performance by Mr. Dupree and the quartet earlier in the day and, reflecting on it subsequently, realized that it was his playing and he himself that was most memorable; as if the piece was called "Piano Sonata in F Minor with Quartet Accompaniment". Obviously, this young man is enormously gifted, tossing off the most technically difficult passages with ease and sparkle others would envy. But, that's not the point of this: performers are servants and, in the end, it is the music and the voice of the composer that is to be served, not the other way around. As a contrast, I recently watched the Istomin, Stern, Rose Trio perform the B Major Trio: the tears started flowing from the opening notes of Mr. Rose's cello. Never did one have the feeling that this was anything but a perfect musical collaboration; never, not for a moment did one of these towering figures outshine the others! Perhaps I'm being unfair: comparing a brilliant new wine to a fine, aged Burgundy. I would hope in the coming years, as Mr. Dupree grows musically and is humbled, as we all are, by the experiences of a long life, that he can enrich the world with the fruits of his marvelous talent and dedication to his art.

    Sublime! I have moved from Beethoven to Brahms as in my modest view the latter has greater psychological depth- if emotions have layers, Brahms's lies at the deepest. Beethoven's music is structural perfection, Brahms's is the ultimate sub-conscious. Music-lover from Melb, amateur violinist

    • @philgrant8927
      @philgrant8927 2 года назад +1

      Emotional/psychological depth… Maybe. But for spiritual depth nothing matches the Beethoven late quartets in chamber music. Schubert's quintet, which influenced Brahms, comes a very very close. Interestingly, in his last months Beethoven was working on both a 10 Symphony and a string quintet with two cellos in C major. Schubert visited Beethoven on his deathbed. They also had a mutual friend in the amateur violinist Karl Holz. Schubert's string quintet two years later was also with two cellos and in C major. Schubert wrote for him. If you listen to all these works - the Beethoven late quartets - and the Schubert quintet - fall asleep to them, allow them into the profoundest recesses of your mind, well, you may see I'm right.
      I think a far greater work of Brahms is the Trio number one in B-flat which he revised many years after this. Interestingly, the original version was composed when Brahms was only 20… And was one year after the Schubert was first published! I'm sure the Schubert quintet influenced that work, but it needed the great revision Brahms gave it many years later.

    Unbelievable performance. It sounds like a recording and I never heard such a harmoniously quintet before. All musicians understanded the piece and played every profoundly aspect! They had a sense of perfectionism and I believe, this is (in term of Brahms intention) the "rightest" version that was ever played. They convinced with (right placed and authentic) emotions and music sheet loyalty!

    Gerd FrankeBrahms schreibt im Finalsatz als Tempoverhältnis des Poco sostenuto zum Allegro non troppo "Halbe gleich Viertel" vor. Im Allegro soll also die Viertel so schnell gespielt werden wie im Vorspann die Halbe. Das Ensemble hier verdoppelt das Tempo jedoch. Tatsächlich müsste, wenn man den von Brahms gewünschten Ausdruck realisieren will, das Poco sostenuto deutlich beschleunigt werden, während man das Allegro etwas zurücknehmen kann. 76 Schläge pro Minute - zunächst für die Halbe, dann für die Viertel - erscheinen sinnvoll. Dann verliert das Poco sostenuto auch diesen romantisierenden Tristan-Ton.

    this one is superb, close to the clara haskil one, the acoustic effects are much better, but lack the spontaneous precision and tenderness of that one, a perfect combination of romanticism and classicism, this one emphasizes the dark side of Brahms soul not enough,perhaps it is because they are young, have never love someone before, sacrifice for them, become desparate, and still hold themselves, continuing the musts of life,like Brahms, like Haskil, like all the immortals, tested by Fate, and endure and overcome, so still as an expression not only of music but life as well, the Clara Haskil one is still my number 1, and perhaps the Glenn Gould one remains in the second place firmly. He really understands Brahms and Wagner, not Bach. His Bach is pure sophistications, his Brahms is from his soul.

      Es gibt natürlich nicht DAS richtige Stück. Dass mir das Klavierquintett op. 34 von Brahms nicht so zusagt, hat verschiedene Gründe, ist natürlich nur meine persönliche Meinung. Der dritte Satz (also das Scherzo) gefällt mir übrigens sehr gut, wohingegen ich den zweiten Satz eher vermeide. Ich finde tiefe Streicher meistens schöner als die Hohen. Daher kann ich stücke mit basslastigerer Besetzung, wie beispielsweise das Forellenquintett von Schubert, oft mehr genießen.
