I believe that if you check the bottom shell, the female will be smooth/flat while the male bottom shell will have an indentation.
It's to help him balance as he mounts on the female. Keeps him from sliding off.

They don't use their long front claws for digging nest, they use them in courtship.

For future reference you can tell female snd male turtles apart by there claws if they have long claws its a male short claws its a female
