- In this video, I prep my basement stairwell for drywall. I make sure that all of the strapping is secured, add in some electrical boxes and get my wiring prepped for the electrical work that needs to be done. I also install mineral wool fire and sound insulation. I added this insulation in my third bedroom and was happy with the results so I am excited to see if it helps to reduce the sounds from the laundry room and my workshop in the basement.

1:30 you could put a trap door with a hinge on top. that way no one can slip down the stairs by accident after entering the room
I thought the same thing, but since the washer and dryer are in the basement, it might be awkward.
@@cynthiacarter532 you're right about that. this gave me another idea though. he could build a 1/3 wall in front of the space, next to the stairs. this way you can hold yourself to it if you slip and the space behind the wall can be used as storage if you install a lid. the upper 2/3 can still be shelves
I think trap door would work. Place it level with the stair top landing. Then it will give you a place to stand to access the shelves easier and when necessary pick it up and hook it open. Easy Peary. Great vids Matt. Keep it going.
Kind of a reverse attic access door leaving it the way it is looks like an accident waiting to happen.
It's so helpful to see someone renovate a house built the exact same year as mine. Mine was also built in '46. Old wiring everywhere and interesting (to say the least) choices over the decades throughout.
My dad started out as an electrician in the late 30's to early 40's and that was a real handy skill to have! He installed a dishwasher in our 1952 era house in 1964, all the wiring in a small garage remodel and nursed the old Sears clothes dryer along for at least 25 years. Fixed old tube radios, lamps, etc.

Any electrical work needs to be completed by a licensed electrician, and a compliance certificate given, and I for 1 think it’s a way better outcome
Hey! As a homeowner, in MA, it is not illegal to complete your own electrical work. You just need to pull a permit and have it inspected. 😃

Since 2013, I have become a great fan of the Torx (six-point) drive screws! I've also taken the practice of pulling the nails from the electrical boxes and replacing them with #8 Torx-head screws...eliminates the need to "beat" on the structure with the hammer to do the installation!
Ah yes, just the inspiration I need for doing some of my own DIY in this oddly badly maintained flat I moved into (but with an amazing shell and design!)

I just used mineral wool insulation for the first time. I thought fiberglass was nasty to work with. Wow, mineral wool takes the cake. I'll never use it again. Threw fibers everywhere and got in my skin for days afterwards.
It can definitely get nasty.

For those tough spots where the insulation wants to fall out you can cut thin strips of vapor barrier and staple it to the studs to hold it in
I wonder if you could revise the stairs to be a wide diagonal first step that spans the doorway at grade, then joins the existing steps with a couple spiraling-down steps that can still access the various features? Just to bring folks into the space with a bit safer platform.
Love your channel! Was wondering…could you install a removable trap door/access panel that covers the opening to your basement steps? That way you could safely access the storage area, without worrying about falling down the stairs. If you need to go into the basement, just lift the access panel. Just a thought. Would hate for you or one of your family members to take a miss-step and get hurt.
You could put a banister on that top step, it may go nowhere but it would lessen the likelihood that someone would fall down the stairs...

Have you thought about doing something similar to what you did for the hatch (cover) for the stairs? Could give you more walking space and remove the walk in hazard.
In Holland the wiring situation is totally different. For safety reasons (e.g. drilling into the wiring) every piece of wiring must be placed is a hard pvc tube. So pvc tubes must be placed in the wall first (glued together) and than the wires are pulled through. Loose wiring and stapling wiring is not allowed in walls. Thanks for the vid, till the next one!

if you ever have a situation where guests are using your basement stairs, you could install a baby/pet gate across the doorway to serve as a warning for that potential first step of death

i guess you could make some kind of short ramp to replace the 3 stairs.
Sooo, for the basement stairs… how about a hinged trap door that covers the stairs when not in use.. An above head, pull cord system to open… or something along those lines

Maybe some of that foam board might work well for the bulkhead area? They sell small 2x2 pieces at HD and Lowes for like 6 bucks.
Great job! Love your videos. What are you gonna do about that old work electrical box with the plug? They are meant to be installed after the drywall is up. Recommend you get a new work box and nail to the studs before then maybe?
why not use this opportunity to switch that old work box to a new work box and actually nail it to the stud? Also, did you run 14/3 up for the light switch? Not sure if i missed this...
Just means that you are going to have to film a video on building a retractable hatch that works as flooring.
Could you make a step onto the steps so you could make a bigger platform?
With those blue boxes you can just twist that piece where the wire goes in and you can slide two wires in each slot. Don't think it makes a difference it just closes up the gaps.

Matt do you have any opinion on grks? It looks like you used them on the studs. Ive used 3 inch coated exterior screws on my basement studs due to moisture and ive had flooding down there. Nice small project area for a change!
How about a hinged door over the stairs?
You have stair access to the basement from the outside… so you should just install a Batpole in this space.
Just a thought from a non expert, can you use Elmers school glue to glue the insulation on the back so it don't fall?

Strapping is used to have a area to where the drywall can get attached to.
you can add a hinge door on the floor that you can step on to make it less sketchy?

Just curious, if you were to mark the cables with a coloured spray, wouldn't that help remember where they are without taking too much extra time? Curious
For that exterior wall, would it makes sense to put a vapor barrier or housewrap between the insulation and the brick?

I want to replace my 80's ceiling light fixtures with the LED flat lights that you are installing, is that possible? I know you have to get the junction box to put up there as well as the light, just wondering? Thanks!

Confused why you placed that outlet box floating in the wall cavity instead of nailing it to the stud three inches away. You must have some specific layout in mind? And I love the idea that you have a garbage bag full of rockwool scraps in the garage, a man after my own heart :-)
Hey! I did that when I did the bedroom on the other side of the wall because I wasn't sure how it was going to work out so I used the box so I could put it wherever. And yeah I don't like to waste materials. 😁 Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the videos! Can you explain why the box is sitting in the middle and not connected to your stud at 19:03?
That’s an old work box. Those can be attached securely to just drywall. A new work box is the type that hammer into a stud and what you’re most likely thinking of. By using an old work box in this setting, it allows him to put that wherever he wants and what makes the most sense.
@@saljablo2767 That's what I thought. In my mind, it just didn't make sense to have an old work box with new work. I was just wondering if there was another reason he needed it in the middle of the workspace that I wasn't seeing.
I'll be interested to see how he attaches that box to the drywall, since they are meant to install from the front of the drywall, not the back. But he can't install it from the front without disconnecting the wires from it.
@@zysurge you can tilt those boxes and slide them thru a standard outlet hole in drywall.

Aren't old oil burners required to be taken out by insurance I am not sure that is why I am asking?
9:39 That staple is too tight. The staples are there only to prevent the wire from being pinched by the drywall being installed. Allowing the wire to be tucked to the wall but yet allowed to be pulled in either direction, especially if you need a few inches when later modifying the connection in the box is priceless.

Why don't you piano hinge a piece of wood that goes down over your stairwell opening and extends your floor? You can just raise it for basement access!
