  • Almost all of my competitive Bolt Action play has come from fielding my Romanian army, and when the Case Blue campaign supplement was announced with new units and national characteristics for my chosen force, I was excited to see what would be offered to this oft-overlooked minor nation.
So, lets discuss Romania, Case Blue, and answer one of mankind’s biggest questions - is it competitive?

I will say Romania got the short end of the stick with their new options in Case Blue. I was, quite honestly, perfectly happy to run a Romanian Army with 2 Medium Howitzers, R-2 tank Destroyer, and for Axis support I'd usually toss in either a 2nd sniper team or second medium mortar team. I don't see it changing anytime soon.

The short answer? Nope. I run a standard 2x Combat Pioneers/med howitzers, R-2 tank destroyer and Kugelblitz. The new units apart from the flamer are pants - the FAQ did more by giving trucks MMGs and access to a field car. The latter is now gives the flamer the drive-by BBQ set up.
There was some discussion last week with the author of CB/Stalingrad with a potential re-wording of the improvised AT rule to clarify 'less than +3 pen' which means +2 pen or less. As some seem to read it as including heavy autocannons. The best bit of the discourse was to recommend that the R-1 gets to be included as a GRP unit.

I think minor nations are intentionally kind of crappy to stay minor... except for Finland. Someone at Warlord has a massive chubby for the Finns.

      France isn’t really underpowered

Yeah its an interesting balance between keeping minor nations from being ultra powerful but also making them exciting to play haha

I thought you did fine on the read btw. I love your Romanians! I play Romanians in flames of war. They have the ability to get better on a 5 or 6. They look so good! The AT team I think is just an order dice, it is annoying that they didn't get a faust. I find the lack of HMG very odd as they had Hotchkiss's. This is where bolt action can bug me sometimes. I find the rules to be lack luster for a faction that already is tough to use.
I did something similar when I stumbled upon some Dien Bien Phu French Indochina 28mm miniatures. I went all out and assembled a substantial force of French troops (which I count as US Marines, as there are no Foreign Legion rules, and by that time the French had acquired tons of American equipment). I just need to acquire some trucks, but I'm having trouble finding GMCs and 1/2 ton trucks. When building my army, I aim to adhere closely to a thematic approach, even if it's a bit hit or miss. For example, I include a heavy artillery piece because they were significant in the battle, and I also include the Forward Air Observer for its ability to call in two strikes.

yes, the Romanian's are missing a bunch of options they historically had, and Bolt Action is quite fast and loose with it's historical accuracy anyways (the latest FAQ just gave Italy a prototype tank that never saw combat haha).
What miniatures are you using for your French? The empress ones look ace!

Sorry thought I hit reply. They are the empress French Indochina minis and some US minis converted.

What you have to remember is that the majority of the Romanian steel was going toward boats…

Tank hunters are more a deterrent though, right?

    • @scalehistoryslc819
      @scalehistoryslc819  6 месяцев назад

totally - but if the tank hunters have to spend 2-3 turns getting into position, they become much less effective

Probably because the Japanese anti-tank squads DO forward deploy... understandably confusing. But 9" surprise charge could come in handy

Competitive play is cool and all.... but its a mind set we just cant get behind. our group moved from BA to K'47 because of the absence of win at all costs, min max players.
they see the game and the rules, and thats what they play, the toy soldiers do not matter, any token could do. i wish the younger crowd hadn't discovered historicals,
its changed the nature or the games, and the spirit and content of the gamers. now we cant even have beer while playing because the manchildren have ruined it for everyone else.
i wish the kids would stay off our lawn, so to say. Alaska doesnt need them, and we dont want them. make playing with toy soldiers fun again

That sounds frustrating. Our community has a great balance between playing historically and competitively - many players try to do both simultaneously. I believe its up to community leaders to encourage that though. If some kids have ruined a game for your community, there may need to be some ownership that needs to be taken by whoever is heading things up

kids have disposable income, us old grognards just take up tables. ever since covid the old chicken wing joint has had empty tables. they let us play in the back, we buy beer and wings, its a win win, older crowd. so in the end it works out. just hate how the hobby has changed, too much anxiety and competitiveness ... whippersnappers. whats worse is how triggered they get at a swastika flag.. we like having commie and nazi armies to kill... cant always be good guy GIs vs Good Guy GIs... give us old guys ruskies, nazis, or japs to kill, and a beer, and were good, even if we lose, as long as we can play toy soldiers pew pew pew... lol @@scalehistoryslc819
