Karen was a stellar drummer and that is really what she considered herself to be best at. She didn't think that she could sing well and she had to be convinced to become a singing artist. YES! The music from this era was so complete. Every line, every lyric, every arrangement was so polished and perfected. The soundscapes they create are so rich. And they did this on analog equipment and tape with no autotune. Wish I could be a kid during this era again.
You'd love "This Masquerade!" Karen's fabulous voice, Richard's wonderful jazz piano solo, and a terrific flute solo by band member Bob Messenger. It will floor you! SO GOOD, as are all Carpenters songs.
I have many great Carpenters memories starting when I was about ten years old. My dad had just bought his first Cadillac and the upgraded sound system was an 8-track. 😂 W]e had a Johnnny Cash Live From San Quentin tape and whicever Carpenters album this song was on originally. Karen had such a clear, ethereal, haunting voice. They called her One-Take Karen, she nailed it first time, every time. She said she was a drummer first, she was expert at it. She way preferred being behind the drums to being in front of the band. Her brother played the keyboard/piano and arranged and produced their music.
That poetry you’re loving is the amazing songwriting skills of the late, great Burt Bacharach. Karen’s voice and Richard’s harmonies are unmatched to this day.

One of the great Burt Bacharach songs, both lyrics and composition. The Carpenters do a fantastic job bringing the song to life. They loved to do Bacharach songs.
