"superstar" was originally recorded in 1971 for their 3rd studio album [Carpenters] Karen Carpenter - vocals, drums, Richard Carpenter - arranger, piano, harpsichord, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond organ, vocals, orchestration, Hal Blaine - drums, Jim Horn - reeds. Earl Dumler - oboe on "For All We Know", Bob Messenger - bass, reeds, Tommy Morgan - harmonica. This version was recorded in 2018 at Abby Road Studios with the original master with original musicians and vocals but with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra added. Again Richard did the producing, arranging and directed the Philharmonic. He recorded 18 of Carpenters hits that way and released "Carpenters with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" in Dec. of 2018. It contained "Yesterday Once More" "Hurting Each Other" "Touch Me When We're Dancing" For All We Know" "I Need to Be in Love" "I Believe You "I Just Fall in Love Again" "Merry Christmas, Darling" "Baby It's You" "(They Long to Be) Close to You" "Superstar" "Rainy Days and Mondays" "This Masquerade" "Ticket to Ride" "Goodbye to Love" "Top of the World" "We've Only Just Begun". I first saw them in 1965 as the Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio. It was Richard on piano Karen (she was 15 and did not sing yet) on drums and originally Wesley Jacobs standup bass and tuba latter Bill Sissoyev took over on bass. They won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands in 1966 and co won the TV shoe Your All American Show in 1968. It had a winner every week and then after 7 or 8 weeks an overall winner. You can hear their song "Iced Tea" from the contest if you search for 1966 battle of the bands. There are a lot of very good to great drummers, but only one with her voice.
Contralto my friend. She is a contralto, rare in the female vocal world. Tori is close, but missing some nuances that make Karen so so special. But God bless Tori for keeping Karen's music alive. So thank you, Tori, so much! Peace and blessings to you. Chuck, a fan who misses Karen every day, in NC
Even though Karen could play drums, she was always the lead vocalist of the group. Her brother was the genius behind the arrangements and sang back up. Be sure to check out We've Only Just Begun and Close to You.
Dan - Damn, you’re a cool cat. Love your reactions to Carpenters songs. I’d suggest next checking out “I Need to Be in Love” for another amaaaazing live performance. And “Solitaire” for what many consider her finest vocal.
Watching these Carpenters reactions reminds me how much I love listening to them. Karen’s voice is so gorgeous and pure. I could listen to her sing for hours on end. Thanks for posting! ✌🏻🔥🔥👍🏻
Thanks for reacting to the Carpenters again! There are so many good Carpenter songs to react to but probably the one most important is to listen and react to is "Now", which was her last recorded song before she passed. Finally, lyrics that capture her finding the love she always longed for. Heart wrenching and heart warming at the same time.
I hope he gets around to listening/reacting to 'Now' too. You're right that it's both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Whilst all of Karen's vocals were perfection there's just something more with 'Now' that I can never quite explain. Just makes me wonder what should would have went on to do vocally as she matured with age, and sadly we never got to know. I could talk all day about that song because it's my favourite song of all time, and I like a lot of music.
Her voice is so pure. I used to post Carpenters songs on my Facebook page, 1. Because like you I LOVE HER & their singing as a group . But I had a buddy who would chide me for posting soft sappy Love songs.. Not only did he lack the vision of music but obviously lacked the hearing too.
Kaysee here ... another GREAT reaction to another GREAT Carpenters song. Karen's voice still gives me chills 41 years after we lost her. And yes, to answer your question, it is normal to get chills so soon after one of their songs start. By the way, it's Richard Carpenter, not Robert. Keep those Carpenter reactions coming... I love them!! Just subscribed to your channel 🙂
Ahaha I'm glad I have people to correct me on my slip ups, thanks for filling me in on the wrong name! Appreciate the sub Kaysee, hope to see you tune in some more 😁
Karens voice was dark, rich and hauntingly beautiful. Richards arrangements were unreal. Both so talented. Karen was a Contralto. Leon Russell wrote Superstar: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Russell
Try out "This Masquerade!" Features a fabulous jazz piano solo by Richard and Karen's fabulous voice. Yes, chills are totally normal....even before the singing starts. Genius arrangements and orchestration by Richard.
I saw the Carpenters in 1972 and was blown away. Karen was a legendary Drummer/Singer. I think she was in the same class as Don Henley (The Eagles), Levon Helm (The Band) and Phi Collins. She sang and drummed effortlessly. To see her sing and drum, check out her doing that on a cover of the Beatles' song Help (she opened the show I saw singing and drumming through this song) or singing and drumming through Mr.Guder or Dancing in the Streets. (These are all on RUclips)She broke the Glass Ceiling. She was famous for recording songs in one take. Superstar was recorded in one take, with her reading the lyrics off an envelope written by her brother. What are her best songs ? In my opinion ? 1)Trying to Get the Feeling Again -recorded i 1975--and the lost. Found by Richard --he released it in 1994 -11 years after Karen died.2)Solitaire,3) A Place to Hideaway, 4)Don't Cry for Me Argentina,5)Yesterday Once More,6)Rainy Days and Mondays,7)Mr Guder,8)Duet with Ella Fitzgerald,9)Duet with John Denver,10)Duet with Perry Como--all of these are on RUclips.
Thank you for your reaction to this CARPENTERS song. I hope you would also react to their song, "Where Do I Go From Here?" - Peace.🍩☕ This was also in 1971 as was her other song. If you want to see her play drums, you could see on Ed Sullivan "We've Only Just Begun" - she was playing drums there - 1970.
Superstar was the followup single to Rainy Days and Mondays. Both songs reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Richard and Karen do sing the background vocals. Both songs are from 1971.
Check out the 1989 biopic about Karen''s life produced by brother Richard "The Karen Carpenter Story" and also the brand new top-rated streaming documentary from this year "Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection".
The original title of this song was "Groupie" and they aren't the first to record it (but the ones to make it famous). Check out Sonic Youth's haunting alternative music tribute cover of this song.
A couple of recommendations....."A Song For You" "Close to You" and her favorite song...."I Need to Be In Love" ----my favorite is "Goodbye to Love". Great channel!
To answer your question, Karan‘s vocal range is considered contralto. And also good note on the fact that you noticed the production being much more full and lush. That’s all Richard’s arranging. That’s why they were such a good team, Karan’s voice and Richard’s arranging.
Her brother was brilliant with his arrangements. If only her family had let her alone to do what she wanted in her professional life and her personal life.
Hi Dan. For another great voice, listen to Ava Cassidy. She also had a short life, cut short by cancer and really wasn't discovered until after her death. Her rendition of "Somewhere over the rainbow" is amazing.
There is an amazing British singer called Rumer, and she sounds very much like Karen, and does some songs that Karen had sung. There is also another British singer named Harriet, and her early ballads sound very much like Karen. The thing is, No one sounds exactly like Karen, and The singers I've referred to don't make their living as Karen Carpenter cover artists. They do original material too. The Carpenters were mostly cover artists, though people usually only know their versions of most songs because they are so unforgettable.
@@DanCanReact but the thing is, their covers always became much more well-known than the originals, and most people think of their versions as the originals

React to "When It's Gone, It's Just Gone" by the Carpenters. The song is on RUclips. It's one of my favorites! The producers and record exercs made her solo without the drums. They saiid she was ment to sing as a front person. "This Masquerade" is also a wonderful song written by Leon Russel.
@@DanCanReact Hope you get to react to it, you will be impressed with not only her drumming but her vocals are amazing even when she's drumming. Enjoy!
Dan, here are two more mega hit songs by the Carpenters that you should react to: "Close to You" and "For All We Know". Also, there is a lesser known song written by the great Henry Mancini, "Sometimes" that is a gem.
If you are interested in exceptional singers, I would also suggest checking out Lara Fabian. She did a concert From Lara With Love which was extraordinary. Her live vocals in that concert really surpasses the studio recordings. If you do check it out I would probably suggest starting with Adagio which she sings in English, Je Suis Malade sung in French and Caruso which is sung in Italian. There so many good songs in that concert but I would definitely start with those three. Yes she speaks 5 languages I think and sings in 7 or 9. You won't regret it.
@@DanCanReact you mean for the background vocals? When they were performing live, obviously they were performed by Richard and other background singers but on most songs, their background vocals were done by Richard and Karen and layered into the type of sound that you heard. It's possible that on some studio tracks there may have been other background singers but they were known for layering their own vocals for the most part
@@DanCanReact Nearly all background vocals on recordings through the mid-'70s were just Karen and Richard, with a very few exceptions. The audio for this video is actually from the 1971 studio recording, as this is not a live performance. It was taped the same day as the video for "Rainy Days and Mondays," while the duo was appearing in Las Vegas in April 1971. The "Rainy Days" video also uses the audio of the studio recording, and Karen is not drumming on that recording. It's Hal Blaine on the recording.
Backing vocals was always Richard and Karen multi layered….only time it wasnt… was on songs finished by Richard after karen passed where he used choirs…..Live shows band members added vocals or appearances were lip synced to studio or re recorded .
I like that you said "she initially played the drums in Carpenters", because it's quite rare that people use the group name correctly - most people call them "The Carpenters" which I suppose is easier to go with than just "Carpenters" 😂 I've never been able to get into Tori singing Carpenters songs, I don't get the emotion in her voice like Karen, just kinda feels like she looks into the camera to say "Look how much I sound like Karen" rather than singing from the heart, but maybe that's just me being fussy 😂 I think the nearest I've heard to Karen vocally is a singer called Harriet, well worth checking out. I'd also maybe recommend a song called 'Slow' by Rumer, that definitely has shades of Carpenters to it.
I had to re-record some footage during these reactions because I called them "The Carpenters" on several occasions, which isn't their name. It's ironic cause I got Richard's name wrong and didn't even notice 😂 But I guess it's all preference for Tori's voice, I really like her singing personally. Thanks for the recommendation btw!
@@DanCanReact Hey y'all, wait a second. Just because "the" is not part of their name it doesn't mean you can't use it correctly. Just like you say "the Smiths" or "the Johnsons" or "the Joneses". While some bands did have "the" as part of their name (The Beatles, The Band, The Who, The Beach Boys) it doesn't mean SAYING it is wrong. It just means it is not in their logo or album covers or an official part of their commercial stage name. Same with "the Go-Go's" or "the B-52's". In fact whenever an act is referred to in plural (ending in "s" usually), it is grammatically correct to SAY it that way. Just don't use it as an official part of the name in writing, and don't capitalize it as "The Carpenters". Saying it though? Totally fine.
@@DanCanReactcorrect. This song was written in 1969 by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett. Originally performed by Delaney & Bonnie. Original title was Groupie (Superstar). Richard saw Bette Midler perform Groupie on The Tonight Show. He later modified one line to tone it down for Amare. “Sleep with you” became “Be with you” and “Superstar” was born. Dan, although Tori Holub can superficially imitate the sound of Karen's voice, Karen's art is not just sound. It is warmth, clarity, and emotional depth that can't be mimicked. It is technical brilliance that is an innate gift not something studied and appropriated by someone trying to be Karen Carpenter. Tori Holub is no Karen Carpenter as much as she wants to be.
Dan, Tori Holub has managed to reproduce the SOUND of Karen's voice. But again, there is more to Karen Carpenter's voice than sound. There is an emotional resonance and universality that reaches deep into our souls. That is the reason that Karen is loved and respected by many generations all over the world. She is an acknowledged legend. Karen possessed an instinctive technical brilliance which was not studied and appropriated from someone else. It came from within. To further my point, you can make a high tech digital copy of the Mona Lisa and put it alongside the original. At a glance, they look similar. But they are not the same. One is the priceless original. The other is a skillful copy.

Wow, really appreciate you filling me in! Thanks 😁
Thanks for filling me in, and I whole heartedly appreciate you tuning in Chuck!
Even though Karen could play drums, she was always the lead vocalist of the group. Her brother was the genius behind the arrangements and sang back up. Be sure to check out We've Only Just Begun and Close to You.
So much to react to!!
Dan - Damn, you’re a cool cat. Love your reactions to Carpenters songs. I’d suggest next checking out “I Need to Be in Love” for another amaaaazing live performance. And “Solitaire” for what many consider her finest vocal.
Ha! Appreciate that Jack. I see you're subscribed, my thanks. And will add that to the list of other songs to react to 😅
Watching these Carpenters reactions reminds me how much I love listening to them. Karen’s voice is so gorgeous and pure. I could listen to her sing for hours on end. Thanks for posting!

Wow, that's extremely heartbreaking. I'll be sure to react to eventually!
@@andrewlowery6030 AMEN!
Anyone who doesn't like Karen/Richard and their music must be deaf 😂

Yep! Looking forward to posting more of my reactions to their amazing music.
Try out "This Masquerade!" Features a fabulous jazz piano solo by Richard and Karen's fabulous voice. Yes, chills are totally normal....even before the singing starts. Genius arrangements and orchestration by Richard.
Appreciate the recommendation Carol!!

Thanks so much for watching, I appreciate you! And you're right, she should have lived for much longer...
@@DanCanReact more than welcome 🙏🤗
Some of the best you've listed I plan to react to eventually! Be sure to subscribe for that 😁
@@DanCanReact - cool
This song is why I had a career in music. Been all over the world. Keyboard and vocals
Have you published any of your music? I'd love to hear it if so!
They used a multitrack tape to sing backup for themselves as well as the other members of the band.
I love that! So cool
Richard is one of the greatest song writers and more importantly ARRANGERS in popular music history!!!
He is great!! And thanks for being a subscriber Dave.
All of her song stick with you all day
Thank you for your reaction to this CARPENTERS song.
Wow, so this was the perfect follow up reaction. Thanks for watching Ray 😁
Check out the 1989 biopic about Karen''s life produced by brother Richard "The Karen Carpenter Story" and also the brand new top-rated streaming documentary from this year "Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection".
If you want to hear something that is tailored perfectly for her, listen to their hit "Goodbye To Love". It is often paired with Rainy Days & Mondays.
my fave Carpenters song! ♥

Thanks, great comment! 🙏
So sad how she died. She was mourned for a long time. ❤❤😭
Yeah, may she rest in peace 🙏
Hey that sounds great! When ever you have the time thanks 🙏
Hey anytime 😊
I might do the one you suggested after the current upload scheduled for today 😁 If not in the next two, stay tuned...
To answer your question, Karan‘s vocal range is considered contralto. And also good note on the fact that you noticed the production being much more full and lush. That’s all Richard’s arranging. That’s why they were such a good team, Karan’s voice and Richard’s arranging.
Yeah, such a great set in this one! The previous one didn't stand out to me much, but this one was AWESOME 🔥
Try Carpenters Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft
Will take note of it!
That's a really fun song with a very creative arrangement by Richard. Also loved guitarist Tony Peluso's spot as a rock DJ.
Somewhere over the rainbow is such a great song!! Gotta check that out eventually.
If you really want to hear vocal acrobatics I would suggest you listen to her song Solitaire. It will give you goosebumps on you goosebumps.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Have to react to there signature song Top Of The World.😊
Could definitely be a future reaction!
Karen ❤❤
Such a wonderful talent ❤❤
There is an amazing British singer called Rumer, and she sounds very much like Karen, and does some songs that Karen had sung. There is also another British singer named Harriet, and her early ballads sound very much like Karen. The thing is, No one sounds exactly like Karen, and The singers I've referred to don't make their living as Karen Carpenter cover artists. They do original material too. The Carpenters were mostly cover artists, though people usually only know their versions of most songs because they are so unforgettable.
Wow, didn't know that a lot of their songs are covers. That's so interesting.
@@DanCanReact but the thing is, their covers always became much more well-known than the originals, and most people think of their versions as the originals
If you want to watch her sing and play the drums then you should check out the Australia Live video here on RUclips. It is in black and white but the quality of the audio is really good. Wow!! what talent. I am mesmerized every time I watch it. Probably watched parts of this 100 times by now.
Black and white is fine, thanks for the suggestion and for watching!

Will do, got a lot to react to in the future!

Thanks! I'm probably going to do more Carpenters next week 😁
If you check out "i need to be in love"and watch her facial expressions especially towards the end
I've seen people in tears including me😢😢❤❤
Will be sure to check that out in the future, I may be in tears as well!
Appreciate it! I speak French so I'd definitely appreciate hearing Je Suis Malade if it's good!
Karen did Not want to be "lead" singer! He brother and their manager pushed her out from behind the drums!
I don't blame them doing that when she has an angelic voice like that!!
Please react to: We've Only Just Begun & Close to You ❤
The background vocals are always done by Karen and Richard and layered onto the main vocal.
Apparently there are some songs where they did have some external help from other people for the bg vocals! Could be wrong though.
On the first note, you know it's Karen. Because it couldn't be anyone else.
She does have a very unique voice yes!
Backing vocals was always Richard and Karen multi layered….only time it wasnt… was on songs finished by Richard after karen passed where he used choirs…..Live shows band members added vocals or appearances were lip synced to studio or re recorded .
I like that you said "she initially played the drums in Carpenters", because it's quite rare that people use the group name correctly - most people call them "The Carpenters" which I suppose is easier to go with than just "Carpenters" 😂
I've never been able to get into Tori singing Carpenters songs, I don't get the emotion in her voice like Karen, just kinda feels like she looks into the camera to say "Look how much I sound like Karen" rather than singing from the heart, but maybe that's just me being fussy 😂 I think the nearest I've heard to Karen vocally is a singer called Harriet, well worth checking out.
Loved it yet again. Give Pentatonix a shot. I promise they won't disappoint... plus... Pentaholics will love you!!!
Thanks for watching! And I'll keep note of that thanks!!
@@DanCanReactI can tell by your reaction to Karen Pentatonix will give you full body chills
Controuto is the lower range title for this type of voice.
Awesome, you learn something new everyday!
Really her preference was playing the drums but she was pressured to be the lead singer for obvious reasons.
Yeah, what an amazing voice!
She still drummed but they forced her out front due to her voice. She still considered herself "a drummer who could sing".
It would be a shame for her not to sing with a voice like that!
Superstar and Rainy days are on the same album.
Interesting! It felt like it was made farther down the line, but I was wrong.
@@DanCanReact There was a time when Karen did some songs on drums and others w/o - it also depended on the nature of the show.
Originally sung by Bonnie Bramlett
Interesting, so this is what people mean when they say a lot of the Carpenters songs are covers. Thanks for sharing that!
Karen sang it in one take as a practice track. The booth said “we got it, we’re good” or something to that effect. One Take Karen became a legend. Karen’s last recorded song, “Now” was a One Take Karen song. Now is bone chilling when you know, that was it. Done.

One more thing. The first fully original Carpenters song was “Goodbye To Love” in 1972. So from 1969 all singles were covers. Until …

@@DanCanReact One that few have done but it is one of the BEST story songs (which were huge in the 1970's) is the original 1973 Vicki Lawrence #1 hit "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia". Yes Big Joe, this was corrected in the pin comment mere hours after I posted the video!
Karen had always been the lead singer, while playing the drums or not. The Carpenters are two people, Karen and her brother on the piano, sorry, I've forgotten his name.

She didn't like being out front.
I feel her drums we're her safe place.
I wonder if she had been allowed to stay behind her drums would things turn out differently?

Love your reaction to The Carpenters, not Robert, his name is Richard Carpenter. There will never be another Richard Carpenter but beautiful Karen Carpenter has a deep Angellic voice, I believe its called Contralto, most women don't have a contralto voice, thats top tier in any generation. What are those kool white headphones you are wearing??? I bet Miss Carpenter spirit would also be flattered if you said she was beautiful. Karen always had a self image problem.

Hi Dan, I think you already saw my drumming song video recommendation. So, I like that you got a Tori sneak peak. I usually hold back on Tori until a reactor’s Carpenters journey is well established. It helps with appreciating her capabilities. I was the first and for a long time, starting last October, the only Tori requester. I was 57 reactions in when I saw one that wasn’t mine. There are a few but my friend Ron #58 is second only to me. We have well over 200 reactions in hand now. Thankfully there are a few more requesters. She has a lot of great people surrounding her and met Richard in April at the 55th Anniversary where she was an invited singer, one of 8 acts. That all said I’m going to recommend a non-Carpenters cover, just the same. She and Dan Wesley recently released their cover of the song; Suddenly. It was originally from the 1980 movie Xanadu. Originally sung by the movie’s star Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richard. I hope you know Olivia? I don’t want to spoil that journey? Linked below.
You’re going to have a lot of fun on these journeys, Carpenters has a lot and Tori has well, only just begun. 😃

Yeah woops! That's a bad mistake on my part, but appreciate you pointing it out. And wow, that's really cool that she got to meet RICHARD at the 55th anniversary. That must be such an honor. Thanks for the recommendation.
@@DanCanReactyes! Can you imagine meeting a hero! She’s engineering her own videos, the ones she is guesting in is done by then main producer. Her own short and one long videos are a definite cut above. I met her and made a whole bunch of new friends at the 55th. I live in L.A. so Downey is freeway close. 25 miles which in LA traffic could be a two week drive 😂. Oh and believe me I’ve seen worse mistakes on Richard’s name. Let alone Tori’s surname. I think you had it. Her dad spells it “Ha Lubb” it’s soft vowels is what I like to say. Enjoy your Carpenters and now Tori, journey.
Joe
Dan, although Tori Holub can superficially imitate the sound of Karen's voice, Karen's art is not just sound. It is warmth, clarity, and emotional depth that can't be mimicked. It is technical brilliance that is an innate gift not something studied and appropriated by someone trying to be Karen Carpenter. Tori Holub is no Karen Carpenter as much as she wants to be.
Fair enough, but it does sound similar to me, with my limited listening of her!
