Most start ups take years to become reliably profitable. Cover wasn't even started as a vtuber agency, it is something that grew out of an experiment. One small company that I came to respect was Tsunderia. They eventually admitted that they didn't have the resources to support the talents and decided to close and let everyone keep their assets so they could keep going on their own.

The main reason why ID1 > Myth > ID2 took so long for their first 3D's was simply because of Covid restrictions. And Cover still went way waaaaaay out of their way to have them become part of Holo Fes.
Cover payed upward of 50k $ to have Kiara, Ame, Gura, Ina be able to get into 3rd Party Mocap Studios to have their Fes Performances recorded. Thats per Talent btw.
When you compair it to Council, Sorry "Promise" and ID3 wich literally the upcomeing weekends their 3D's will be showcased it was rather quick compaired to ID1 - Myth - ID2.

As a Vtuber since 2020 with shitty abilities in advertisement, I can say with certainty that, in a wide range of situations, joining a company is the best thing you can do for your careeer and sometimes you just need a good manager and a little push (and that's why people still audition to "not good companies")

I think back to CDawg talking (and kind of shitting) on people who join agencies, saying they have no talent when i think about agencies. A big benefit to it, so it seems, is that sometimes you just need better resources than the ones you have, and that's where joining an agency seems to be legitimately the best option.
Naturally its a more stable gig than going solo (props to you by the way, keep it up!) and you gain more solid resources, managers to keep you afloat, and access to a social circle of individuals in varying levels of being in the same position.

A thing about Idol Corp which I don't see people talk about at all, even though it's HUGE is they are planning to launch and are having auditions for a Spanish speaking wave, IdolES. For the longest time I've found it baffling how neither of the two giants or any of the relatively more established corpos have launched an ES branch much sooner, the Spanish speaking market is a diamond mine in clear sight which for some reason has remained untouched for years. If they don't throw the ball this could easily proper them into being the third biggest traditional corpo behind the two giants, and could start a wave of agencies launching ES gens.

VOMS project has proven itself to fall nicely between micro-agency and friend group, and one of the better ones to be in. GYARI seems to be a nice dude, handles himself well as the sole staff member, and the talents that work for him are likeable and good at what they do. Their main limiting factor is that you're required to be fluent Japanese and a Japanese citizen.
He struck gold with Pikamee, though, because she was bilingual and could therefor cross the language barrier, making her appealing to overseas audiences. However, her inevitable success this forced GYARI to take his VTubing business more seriously, hence why it 'upgraded' from being something more akin to a friend group to an actual micro-agency. With her gone, though, it devolved back to the friend group it was designed to be, and unless he can find a new member with similar features as Pikamee, it will probably forever stay that way. But, given that it's pretty much a non-profit organization, that also means he will suffer little to no financial setback. And the talents keep everything they earn, so it's nice pocket money for them, too.
My opinion on VShojo has improved a lot since Henya joined and Vei, Silvervale and Nyanners left. Since then, each new member seems to be a good fit. Only downside: they exclusively stream on Twitch, which limits their audience. Still, if you're a sizable ex-VTuber, and get along well with Ironmouse (and probably other members), you have a high chance of being recruited by them.
Phase Connect and IdolEN have also exceeded my expectations. Likeable talents, and the CEO seems to be solid. I expect those two agencies to become bigger as smaller ones fall out of the market or, in case of Akio, WACTOR and Taiyaki Studios, get exposed as black companies).
Hololive is so far the strongest of the big two. Most talents are highly enjoyable (especially the twin doggos), and the company seems very competent in what they do. Hard to get into, though they _will_ reconsider your application if you refuse to give up and keep trying.
Nijisanji has a lot of good and entertaining talents, but their management needs some work. Could be better, but by far not the worst, either. Also hard to get into, especially if you just started.
I agree with your overall sentiments, though, should you want to join any of these companies, make sure to take your time to read the contract. If you have doubts, either try negotiating for a better one, or don't sign it at all. Preferably, if you have the resources, have a contract lawyer go through it with you.

Out of the big 3, Holo still seems like the golden standard to me. Yagoo is best girl, they have competent managers, amazing tech, and they pay fixed monthly wages. They also have learned from some of their part mistakes and dramas, and most of the drama nowadays seems to come from outside. It's hard to get into, but not impossible. Bijou, Nerissa, Fauna or Ina were all established content creators, but by no means big. If you are willing to put up with some classic idol stuff, Holo is top. Niji just seems very hit or miss. They release more waves, so you have better chances to join, but there is a huge discrepancy between what can happen. Some talents pop off and will get all the benefits while the rest gets the short end of the stick, and (EN) management is absolutely atrocious. Still not 100% sure what I should make out of VShojo. They are the right place for people like Kson, Mousy, Fruit or Henya who just wanna vibe and have their freedom, but they don't offer much in talent support and brand building in return and unless you are an already established and big name, it's impossible to get into. Might as well join Holo or Niji first.
From the smaller companies, Phase Connect, Idol, Vreverie and Vdere all seem promising with their own ups and downs, but mostly positives. Might be worth a look.

The problem with the "run" factor is that talents are already in before they realize the place is an absoulte shit show. We didn't learn about Akioair until they tried to use a minor as a vtuber and we didn't realize about WACTOR until after several generations and half their talents are either on hiatus or pretty much quitting and they hard doxxed one of their talents. We didn't know about how much of a shitshow NijiEN's management was until Saiyu decided to drop her story. You can even say that Hololive was an absolute shitshow early on if we take note of the fact that Mei was being sexually harassed by either her own manager or staff or that hololive was hiring minors (One of them terminated for compensation dating)
The difference between a good and bad agency is how they handle bad situations, how they view and handle their talents, and how they evolve when either the talent or management makes a mistake.

Honestly every microcorp needs to have IP rights in the model and persona go to talents after some time period, like 18 months, at least for their early waves. Startups often fail, if you acknowledge that the talents are taking a risk signing up with an unproven company by giving them something to gain even if you fail shows that you are being realistic.

    • @Kaimine08

Problem is that the company are the ones who pay for the model and it belongs to the company. Even if they're basically going to delete it when a person graduates, if they gave the previous person the model that model could potentially be used against the Corpo if the person decides to do that. And what risks are the talents taking if the corpo tanks? They lose their model and potentially their content? That's a far less risk than the corpo takes in which they could be facing bankruptcy.

It could be something that was contingent too, basically if the company doesn't grow and market enough that's their fault. In the end it will be better for any microcorp to do this, you will get better, stronger early waves and if you succeed then your talents should be making enough money they don't want to leave.

A Vtubing company doesn't fail because their talents failed. A vtuber company fails for a myriad of reasons but generally they're not making enough money to survive. Some could say its the talents not pulling in enough revenue but it could be management squandering money or a recession or whatever. There are many reasons why a vtuber agency fails. There are 10s of thousands of vtubers. I could name maybe 50 or 60. That's not even 1%. I certainly don't have time to watch 50 or 60 vtubers so that gets condensed to maybe 5-6 vtubers streams a week. That means there are 1000s of other vtubers that aren't getting noticed by me and the same can be said for millions of people who watch vtubers. It's not that they all suck, it's just that there's so many hours of the day to actually watch vtubers.

The only real good advice here is to do your research and familiarize yourself with the agency you are interested in. There are no hard and fast rules about the standards and expectations each category has and it will change with the growing vtuber landscape as it did over the last 5 years. Even among the big corpos the agency's methods and standards differ wildly. And as pointed out, the big corpos weren't even big back in 2018/19 but had the cons of a big corpo and not much else. I mean, Hololive and Cover Corp is not a nice place to work in back then. Each company's success has their own blend of factors and unseen elements from work culture to forward thinking and innovation, health and mental support outside of vtubing and so on.

Hololive shows tenacity in supporting their members and not giving up on them. When I see talents in other agencies having really low views, I get upset and ask why aren't they helping them? They are just abandoned. Hololive's many events keeps all of them in the limelight and pushes new outfits on them no matter their popularity. I mean... I put it into two types. The eastern Jimosho. Where you work that agency much like how a jpop idol or kpop star is. You sign your life away and you're micromanaged in how you behave and what creative direction you are in and need to ask permission if you so much as wanna fart (plus they take at least 50%). But you get a whole bunch of prestige from the brand alone. A whole lot of marketing push (if you actually hit it off and worth the cost of promoting). And a whole bunch of business connections (still out of your personal pocket tho). And... none of what you make is yours. But if you're a nobody. Its a great place to start (hint-hololive and nijisanji rarely actually hire nobodies). But despite all these annoyances, you can earn big despite the 50 take and is far more stable and reliable.
And you got the western type Talent agency. Which is primarily in a similar way to an actors agent. Their job is to give you sponsorship deals primarily but also gigs in events like comic con. They help out in merch deals too. They take a 30% cut or less. And so don't really have much to do with the actual creative work or marketing. Therein lies the crux of the whole thing. You need to already be established and worth promoting to sponsors. This is perfectly fine as an ex-jimosho as objectively the deal is much better. You earn more and you should already have the resources you need to operate independently. Or otherwise independent from the start.
Both have pros and cons. But I clearly have my bias.

Really love Vspo!. it's not perfect and made mistakes before but at least the company is now taking action against slander(albeit only locally). They recently had a unicorn who slandered their talents to settle by writing an oath not to slander vspo members again and pay financially for damages. The talents does great content since it's a good balance of actual gameplay and entertainment. It might be hard to apply there though cause I heard the screening is strict and applicants has to have a certain level of skills in competitive games since the agency was established to be a blend of vtubing and esports so I wonder if they'll hold the same standard for their upcoming EN branch

    • @ankparptheinsane
      @ankparptheinsane Год назад +3

It's a western agency always been. Let me elaborate.
VShojo is western talent agency but vtuber exclusive.
Mythic Talent is western talent agency but streamer exclusive (flesh streamer + Vtuber).
UTA (united talent) is western talent agency they have Vtuber, Streamer, actor, comedian, athlete.
This always been western models. Talent freedom is always there. The one who owns the IP is talent. The agency more like "agent" of the talent, not agency that "owns" the talent. So, when nousagi says that VShojo is "corpos" i kinda disagree with that notion. Unlike holo and niji, the talent pays their own models while holo and niji "makes" the models. The merch cut is very generous the agency not even taking half of the income, their cut is more of a "fee" than cut. And they didnt even take superchat and membership cuts.
The idol agency is just exclusive to jp corpos, and sometimes their business models copied to the west like idol corp, phase connect, etc. But for some weird reason people lump VShojo as comparable to hololive and nijisanji and always criticize them why not do the same business models like hold audition, censor their talent, giving punishment etc. VShojo won't do that because they dont own the talents, and they won't do audition either because they are not school. Probably because vshojo is famous people kinda lump them similar as jp corpos.

It has always been my dream to stand on stage and let my emotions resound so that others can feel them with me. I'm a little desperate in my dream to give people happiness and make them feel at least a little bit understood by trying to put all of myself into it, but I know that I'm like thousands of other people who have the same dream as me, and only 5 people out of thousands of others who have the same ambition get into the agency. I also know that no agency will allow me to express my emotions and myself and give me freedom through restrictions, but I feel that I want to live up to it even though I am like any other person with this kind of dreams. Nevertheless, I am happy that there are people who have achieved my dreams and make others happy.

Hololive: Golden standard despite the higher restrictions. Difficult to join but they appreciate tenacity. Top tier management. Great support. Must be able to sing or willing to learn.
Nijisanji: Less restrictive. Haphazard managements. Gone downhill throughout this year but maybe it’ll get better. MAYBE. Easier to join. At least compared to Hololive. Might need to invest in singing as well. Support can be
    inconsistent.
Vshoujo: The least restrictive if at all. Stream on twitch. Get popular. Talk to all the talents. Get them to like you. Get their CEO to like you. Then maybe you’ll be invited. Zero management. Focus more on advertising. Running better with newer additions for now.
Phase connect: Beware of pink rabbit and smol grandma.
Idol corp: Open for Spanish as well. Only make female avatar, but male are welcomed if they’re going for female avatar.
