My special splurge is a beautiful cup+saucer set. Just a single cup and saucer that's beautifully designed and crafted. I use it in my twice weekly ritual. So twice a week around 11:00 mid-morning I put on one of my favourite classical music collections, I make a coffee in one of my beautiful cup+saucer sets, I then sit in my terrace, surrounded by my beautiful flower pots, and I sit for a half hour, admiring all the plants and beauty surrounding me, and I sip my beautifully tasting coffee and write in my beautiful gratitude journal with my beautiful fountain pen, while listening to my favourite classical music. I believe these two hours of gratitude and beauty are the most important two hours of my week because they establish my mind-set of abundance and appreciation and gratitude for the rest of the week. I have about seven beautiful single cup+saucer sets that I use only for this purpose. Life is beautiful! 👍💚🎵🎵
We have a shoe store in town that actually measures your feet and puts the shoe on your foot-just like the old days :) I'm planning on getting more of my shoes there because I can see what I'm getting and the shoes will actually fit my feet.
Husband and i retired two years ago. We live in a small home, rarely go out to dinner, dont buy expensive clothes. Our big splurge is going on trips, staying in nice accommodations and enjoying good food and wine.
I retired three years ago. Road trips to national parks and other fabulous destinations are my splurge. I stay in exquisite suites in luxury-rustic lakefront lodges with exceptional cuisine. I'm averaging four such trips a year.
I love buying fresh flowers, books, and pretty nightgowns. These things give me a lot of joy. I also love buying my grandchildren little unexpected gifts. Thanks for sharing this video, I really like it.
Same here, always buying paperbacks, although I still have enough, not yet read. Also nice pyjamas. I used to have a guilty conscience. Not any more! I've worked hard all my life, so will continue to spoil myself. 😊
@@rosiheyer5501same here but I have a group of friends who buy magazines we all like, so read, and pass on after putting our initial on the front, that way we know who hasn't read it yet. We're all enjoying the content, but saving on the cost. It works for us.
Hi Raina, I got Invisalign in my early 50's, I'm now in my mid 60's and while it was a big expenditure, it was the BEST decision. After Invisalign was completed my dentist suggested whitening my teeth and I agreed. I felt like a movie star and couldn't stop looking at my teeth! For years it was always kids first, then the house, dog, ect. So fun at this age to spend some money on ourselves.
Glad to hear that worked out for you. So far my results are coming along really well. I will definitely have to have a whitening program after I finish because they put those little knobs on your teeth and once they take them off, you have to get a bit of whitening done.
I had mine straightened too in my early 50's but I had old-school train tracks! I was teaching at the time, and the kids thought it was so cool that Miss had them too! IT was my first (and so far, only...) really big spend on me. Didn't need the whitening though. I don't think I'll have any further cosmetic intervention - a confident smile looks great in any face, regardless of wrinkles! You're right - such fun...travel is my luxury now.
I really enjoyed this! My splurge is once-a-week daycare for my dog. He’s a mini dachshund and the light of my life, but he’s ALOT! Once a week I don’t have 13 pounds of this guy following me everywhere and sticking his cold wet nose near my lunch! The best part is that I know he loves it there. He has play time twice a day with other dogs and that is his favorite thing ever! When I pick him up we are both so happy to see each other! Hugs, kisses, and cuddles. Win/Win
It’s a good idea to do that, especially if it’s a place you could board him in case of an emergency - even if not, he is now accustomed to being away from you & knowing you’ll be back
I also book my dog into daycare once a week. He is very energetic and is also my shadow!! He gets to interact/play with other dogs and I get time to do things for myself. Im happy to splurge for both of us.😊❤
. i think it's ok to spend bedause there might not be much time left to enjoy . and we will find out pretty quickly when there is no money left . but that's ok too .
I agree 100% about the IPad. I absolutely love my IPad and use it everyday. I love it so much more than my phone. I had to get a phone because even to pay my bills online, they have to send a code to my cell phone to verify my identity. I find that so ironic because I am trying to give them money, and they make it so difficult sometimes. Keep up the interesting videos.😊❤
Hi Raina. I have followed a number of RUclipsrs over the past couple of years, yet never post a comment. After watching your video today I want to say that you are refreshingly "real", humourous but also share your sensible, intelligent side with us. I really like your approach to life and always look forward to the next video.
Thank you so much for your support. I feel pretty humbled and really appreciate the support of return viewers. I hope my videos continue to resonate with you. Happy holidays!
I only buy the best quality toilet paper and paper towel. That is my lifelong splurge. Growing up we used newspaper for the loo and soft toilet paper is a gift.
Omg, I so laughed at this one! Best comment yet. I totally get the toilet paper thing…. Having lived in a communist country as a kid and the constant shortages of toilet paper there, I think I have some kind of a thing around toilet paper. The whole Covid fiasco, with the shortage of toilet paper, just added to it. I always have like these huge extra packages in my basement so I never run out. 😂😂🤣
Me too! Lifelong splurge. As the Tibetan saying goes: "If you buy something expensive, you cry for a day; if you buy something cheap, you cry every day." Cheap toilet paper makes me cry every day!
Oh my goodness, I am so with you on the nice sheets! I will do almost anything to ensure a good night sleep… lol the downfall of menopause… sleepless nights!
Resonate with almost all. I’m the same. I don’t buy for the sake of buying something. I’ve always liked and enjoyed quality pieces from clothes, shoes, skincare, household products. I don’t wear makeup. I’ve bought and tried wearing it, but I’m lazy. When done right, makeup truly does enhance and I wish I had the patience and skill.
Me too. I love my sheets. We moved a few years ago and my granddaughter helped make the bed and she was rubbing the sheet’s against her face and oohing and ahi g just like I do when I get into bed
Great discussion! Because I grew up financially poor, I learned at a very early age to buy the best you could afford without going into debt and take care of/maintain that item. Additionally, I always think of the 'price' of an item in relation to the actual time/amount of usage. I will buy or splurge on certain 'luxury' items, such as hobby-related items, however, even those purchases must meet a 'value/cost/satisfaction' standard. As far as food...I purchase the majority of my food items from a local farm. My philosophy is that the food you consume is the best defense against sickness/disease and is a positive investment in your health. And as we all know, sickness is very costly.
Thank you for sharing! I also sometimes calculate the time/amount of use in relation to the price… especially for clothing. Some of my more expensive items that are really good quality, I’ve actually worn more and for a longer period of time than some other items.
Hi Raina, we received government assistance for dentistry and I feel like the dentist hated seeing us coming. The care was so horrible I thought I’d become a dentist and treat people with compassion. Well, I didn’t become a dentist but I was a dental specialist for the Army National Guard for 23 years. There were many soldiers who needed a gentle hand to help them get through our station because of traumatic experiences they received at the dentist as kids. I also went on many medical missions outside of the U.S. I feel my childhood goal/dream was accomplished 100 fold. Thank you again for awesome content 🙏🏾😊
luv this so much!!! poor people and people with gov plans have to wait months sometimes for appointments and then finding a dentist who will accept things like medical … Even with good insurance which i have … dental work is outrageous !!!
luv this so much!!! poor people and people with gov plans have to wait months sometimes for appointments and then finding a dentist who will accept things like medical … Even with good insurance which i have … dental work is outrageous !!!
New to your channel….subscribed! I’m 72 and going thru my 2nd fight with endometrial cancer in less than a year. Your video gave me inspiration that if I beat this again, I’m spending the $$$$ to have my crooked front tooth replaced with an implant. Something I’ve always wanted but couldn’t justify ….. the hell with the $$$$
Oh my goodness! Sending you absolutely the very best healing vibes, good karma, and anything else that will help at least virtually in your healing journey. Definitely hoping for the best outcome for you.
iPad, bedding, dark chocolate and scarves are my splurges. It is so good to know that we have helped in some tiny way to get your ticket to Melbourne. Our grandchildren are so special and after living hundreds of miles away, I have now finally moved and they are only ten minutes away. This Christmas will be really special.
It’s great to have grandchildren nearby. I have two that live here in Calgary, which is so awesome and then of course I have the ones that live far away, which is less awesome. At least it gives me an excuse to travel somewhere warm during the winter.
Hi Raina, could t agree more with your splurges. Organic, healthy food is a big one for me. We don’t go out to eat and I enjoy cooking. Being healthy and feeling good is a big one for me. I’m 61 and am doing my best to stay off prescription drugs and feel my best as I age. Love your choices as well. Love your channel!
Great list! I’m 75 and have many things on my splurge list that I call “necessary luxuries.” Generally not expensive things, but some are and they are all things that make life more enjoyable for me.
I love getting together with different friends, one at a time and enjoying a lunch at a small local restaurant three or four times a month. I know some people think it’s expensive but for me it is not its entertainment, food & fellowship . It gets me out. I get to enjoy food that I would not make for myself at home. And on the plus side restaurants, give you abundance of food that you can take half home and get a whole another meal out of it. So there’s two meals that I didn’t have to cook for. I also do a lot of volunteering, which is driving my vehicle so the gas adds up, but it feeds my soul so I continue to do it.
I'm really enjoying all your videos, Raina. My splurges are also Invisalign (same reason as you too), my MacBook Air that I can't live without, Kindle because I love to read on it, and good quality shoes. I'm happy that my watching your videos is helping you visit your family in Australia!
Thanks for sharing!! The only thing missing off that list for me is the actual Kindle. But I do use the Kindle app. Thank you so much for supporting my channel and helping me get to get to see the grand units… one of them is already way taller than me!
I would "invest" in a tailor, to make skirts and dresses at the perfect length, so I wouldnt have to buy dresses at lengths I hate. Talk about a money waster.
Our teeth are meant to last a lifetime. When my teeth get misaligned it affects chewing and even talking. I don't have dental insurance but visit my dentist once or twice a year.
Just had the same conversation with myself about buying a new iPad. I don’t own a tv so it’s my source for books, entertainment, staying in touch with my kids, art source, guitar lessons, etc
Just found your channel , but so happy to hear u say your buy things a lot. Have not been well and at 72 yrs am living off my pension. But because I have been sick so much this year and been told my immune system is low. I after listening to friends who say I must try to do things that make my heart smile and give me joy. So when I found your channel today I knew I had to do more for my self. Will try to do some of the things that you have talked about. Whenever I think of something I always say can’t afford, but feel that I can make changes to do at least maybe 3 things I really love. Thank you 💜🙏🏽🤗💜
Cheese as a splurge! Love it! And PS, thank you for sayng this: "Clothing is not an investment." It drives me insane to hear women saying a piece of expensive clothing is an investment. No. It's not. Clothing wears out, is eaten by moths, shrinks, fades, goes out of style, etc.
So true! I’m with you. It also drives me absolutely crazy when I hear people talking about clothes or handbags as being investments. I mean, we all need clothes, but we certainly don’t need expensive clothes so justifying it by saying it is an investment is ridiculous. I’d rather people be honest and say they bought something because they really like it. In my view, if one can afford it, then one can go ahead and buy it. The key thing is not to mortgage one’s peace of mind by buying too many things one can’t afford.
My mom would sometimes say a piece of clothing was an investment ... but she was always joking. Basically she was a big thrift shopper and it meant she found a nice piece and maybe paid full price at a non-thrift shop. ☺🤣
When they say that I interpret it to mean “investment” vs “disposable” as the fast fashion industry has promoted. Obviously it’s not really an investment but it’s in a way “investment” in ourselves with quality.
We’re 57 and still working but we love to travel and have a son in the US (we live in the UK) so we see him once a year and also visit Italy once a year for some sunshine and I meet up with my sister there who is also my bestie (we can only see each other once a year as she lives in RSA). We are very frugal in order to make these trips possible as they’re essential to us. I’ve noticed the sweaters and I love them!! I also prefer cheese to meat - such a treat - cheese and bread. I have it for dinner sometimes. I’m also obsessed with beautiful books about home decor and cooking, but here in the UK I have found some of those much more cheaply at the charity shops. I love this type of content. Thank you.
It's great that you put a priority on dental care... so many people our age don't. Most will go the dentures route, or just live with missing/crooked teeth. I got braces later in life (in my 40's). Having a nice smile is such a confidence builder and well worth the money spent!!
Absolutely!! Totally agree. When I was doing my nutrition diploma after I retired, one of the things that we learned when we were studying geriatric nutrition was that people with really poor dental health suffer from many other things once they’re older. Clearly the inability to eat food properly and digest properly has impact on one’s health and even mental health as they age.
I agree! Spend in your means and enjoy life! Like you said, we work hard for our money, so it is ok to treat ourselves when we can! Good on you to take care of yourself!
Yes, that seems to be the consensus among many viewers! I don’t think any of us would remember anyone’s phone number if we didn’t have our little electronic gadgets to remind us.
Great discussion Raina! Agree with you on most every “splurge” item. We recently downsized a few years ago & I purged many things and clothing I no longer needed. Much was sold via Thread Up. Now, I splurge at my favorite stores when colors & styles I know I’ll wear are appealing. I can go months & months without purchasing anything if styles & colors are not for me. Few months ago, I bought a new sewing machine….a well known brand that I longed for but couldn’t justify the cost for many years. Good luck with your newish channel. You are refreshing!
Thank you for watching! I sold a lot of my old “corporate” clothes and now stick to purchasing clothing for the life I live rather than the life I no longer have 😂😂.
I value dentistry too! My mother who was a nurse always impressed on us kids how important keeping your teeth into old age. Being able to chew with your own teeth and not rely on dentures greatly enhances your nutrition as you can continue to eat fruit and veggies. I also splurge on a few high quality supplements my doctor recommended such as fish oil, etc. healthy aging is my number 1 priority
I’m with you on the dental care. I have not taken any supplements, but I probably should take something. I did a diploma in nutrition after I retired, just for fun and my own personal knowledge. Good supplements were always stressed. I need to do some research as to what brands are good… not all supplements are made equal.
Although being a minimalist, I do spend money on traveling, I love spending some time in warm regions instead of bearing cold and dark winters here in Germany. I have even considered to have just one room in a shared flat and rent my flat I own now to be able to afford trips😃Have a beautiful time with your family in Australia!!!!
Totally agree! Being Canadian, I find going to a warm place during our winter absolute luxury. February and March are absolutely the worst months in Calgary and I’m certainly thrilled about the fact that I will not be here for that period of time lol.
I love your home! I want to do some updates with window coverings & 2 new swivel chairs for my living room. I agree with everything you are saying. I’m a widow & I love my home and yard & being a good steward of it. Happy to find your channel. I’m retiring in 3 months.Thank you.😊
Thank you for watching my video. So excited for you that you are retiring soon. I’m wishing you the very best in your new life. Going into retirement is not the end of something, but it’s the beginning of a very new and exciting moment in your journey.
I splurge on organic foods and cleaners, organic sheets for my bed, Haagen Dazs ice cream, and cardmaking supplies. Every couple years I buy an Italian (or German) made cozy, warm, scarf to add to my collection. Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much for your channel! I’m 45 and still have some time before retirement, but I really enjoy your videos. They help me feel less scared about the future and more prepared for it. I especially want to thank you for this video because, as you said, most recommendations out there push for ultra-minimalism and can create a sense of guilt. I really appreciate your honesty and the way you show that it’s possible to embrace slow living while still enjoying life.
Thank you so much for watching. I so appreciate your comment and yes, you’re correct. A lot of stuff on RUclips focusses on all of these extremes. I do like a simple life but at the same time I’m just a normal person and I have a home and grandchildren and I buy things lol! I really don’t like clutter and unnecessary things but I’m not “minimalist “ in the RUclips sense of the word.
Just discovered your channel. I’m 67 now and like you, I can’t do without my iPad. You could say that I’m in between waiting for an interview outcome for employment and gathering my paperwork for retirement, Lol! I love, love doing so many things on my iPad. I do my banking, blogging, learning on RUclips, watching movies, online shopping or crafting… the list is endless! Yes, life is short so we got to enjoy actually living it… God bless!
I enjoyed listening to you. Retirement was a sad time for me, loved working helped me feel useful. but I'm settling in. learning to budget. I love magazines and books too. And thrift stores are where I splurge.
Wonderful! I like browsing through thrift stores as well. I try and be careful though because it’s just so easy to spend money there because nothing costs a lot and then you end up with too many things lol! I like to hunt for the treasures!
Just found your channel and subscribed. Great topic. I retired early from the corporate world. My splurge was flannel shirts and moon themed tee shirts.😂 I always had to dress up in business attire .... it wasnt comfortable most of the time and felt it wasnt the real me. Now Im comfy ALL the time.
Welcome aboard! Omg, coming from the corporate world myself I totally get it! I think I lived most of my life in black suits, now I own all kinds of colours. And I pretty much live in sweaters.
Love the sweater on you Raina! Its gorgeous. Tabolts here I come! I also splurge on vacation with family and children and good shoes and books, hard copies.
Love this information! I splurge on newspaper subscriptions, three online, and my favorite candles bought when they are on sale. My only big splurge is travel to see family and to some of my favorite places. You are right about videos about not buying anything; I am frugal and I agree with you about spending money on what brings me joy. Also, health care is a top priority as it is so important. I appreciate your information.
Have a wonderful time in Melbourne, the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is so special, often more special and meaningful than that with your parents. I adore my lovely kind Italian grandma especially, who loved me unconditionally and remember with great love.
When I retired I realised financially I couldn’t justify my favourite Chanel perfume and make up every day so now it is a weekend and special day ‘treat’. Roll on weekends!
Love that! I have to say that I don’t mind not having some of these things all the time. Sometimes when you buy stuff and it becomes an everyday thing, it loses its “specialness”.
Hi Raina, I watch you on my IPad. I use it for watching TV in my kitchen when I cook , I read the French magazines and newspapers ,… My IPad and my phone are always with me, even on my bedside table when I sleep. I think this technology is magic and wonderfull ! I’m very happy to help you to visit your family and travel with your sister. That’s so fun! Merry Christmas Raina .💕🎄🎅🏻❄️🇫🇷
Thank you so much for your support and this really nice comment. I’m ashamed to say I definitely would have a hard time without my iPad. Like you I watch a lot of movies and shows etc. on it. What is sad is I have this huge TV in my living room and basically I only use it to display art lol. I prefer just using my iPad.
We are retired 63 yo female. My husband is 67, we wear great lounge wear and slippers, we wear ❤ our favorite perfumes/cologne, our iPads are very important to our daily lives, we don’t watch tv, listen to radio or buy magazines the iPad do it all. We do buy good quality outdoor clothes ( shoes, coats, jackets, gloves, sweater). We do keep our home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. I’m not being to uncomfortable where I spend the majority of my time. We do take mini trips 2-3 days and 1 big trip every 2 years.
This is the first time I have seen your channel. I agree so much on what you have said. Skin care has always been very important to me. I have used the same products for probably 35 years or more and I get a lot of compliments on my skin. So, I think it's been worth it. I will scrimp on other things to purchase what I love. I also love make up & recently made a splurge on Nikol Cosmetics. I have been watching her RUclips channel for years and am very happy with her products. My husband & I go to our dentist regularly and feel that it is so important for our health. And we have all of our own teeth. I am really a very frugal person and don't make impulse decisions. I love to shop at estate sales and thrift.
Welcome here and thank you for watching my video. I’ve seen her channel as well, though. I don’t think we can get her cosmetics here. I think I could probably order them, but the duty would be horrendous. I go through a lot of moisturizer because Calgary is extremely dry. My skin is like the Sahara desert.😂
@@karenkleiner3259 I told my husband I wanted her biggest set with the make up brushes for Christmas. I am so happy with it. It was a pretty big splurge for me. But he said I was worth it.
I also use my iPad all the time - banking, books, looking stuff up, games. Travel to visit loved ones is definitely money well spent. I also love the sweater you are wearing, I love a good quality sweater! I enjoy your youtube channel, keep it up
Thinking all evening about my grands moving. I will remember to do the travel to see them. I just got this iPad today so glad hear it is a good purchase.
I spend on my crafts, too! 😃 I throughly enjoy making things to wear, use in my home and to give as gifts. My elderly aunt used to knit and crochet all the time. As she got older she made me promise that I’d never stop making my craft projects as I aged. She was convinced that her mind stayed sharp because her brain stayed active reading and following tedious instructions. Crafting money is money well spent!
I am happy to find someone else who lives through their iPad. Like you, I use my phone as a phone and occasionally to check email and the weather when I’m not at home. I use my iPad for all my music, books, email, RUclips, FB, etc. My email has dozens of mailboxes where I store recipes or anything else I may want to access later. I would feel lost without it, as much as I hate to admit it!
I know exactly what you mean. If I ever lost my iPad, it would be awful. Thank goodness for the cloud because everything would be restored as soon as I purchased another one.
You are a joy to watch. This was so interesting because I am a retired widow and I've noticed I don't seem to have as many wants. But I notice I like very good hair care and good quality make up though I don't use it everyday. Books have always been my passion so I read a lot on my kindle and sometimes I will splurge on a hardcover of one of my favorite authors. Buying with intention is very sound advice, It's better to have quality . I do envy how you travel solo, I have never done that. This may be something I can work on in the new year
Thank you for the kind note. I definitely get nervous making such a huge trip on my own, but I’m sure it’ll be well worth it. I hope you have a wonderful holiday. Season and get to read. Lots of great books.
We have very similar buys: cashmere sweaters that I love to wear and good cheese. I have a magazine library but I rarely buy them these days. I do look back at them. Add to my list: good coffee beans that I roast myself. I adore Ralph Lauren. I went back to university in my late forties and I did a research assignment on him. I drove 1,600 miles round trip to get photos of the Double RL Ranch. Worth every mile! I bleach my teeth and I buy the gel from my dentist. An unexpected benefit to getting my teeth straightened later in life was no more migraines. Thank you for sharing your list.
New subscriber here! I am not yet retired but it's just a few years away! I'm a teacher though so my income is "fixed" for all intents and purposes. I love to buy Victoria magazines and my favorite Christmas gift received this year was a subscription! I save all of the Christmas ones and pull them out each year with my Christmas decorations! I read them year after year and just love this little splurge of mine! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for watching! Welcome here! Oh my goodness, I totally forgot about Victoria magazine… I used to buy it all the time when I was in my early 20s and 30s. That’s definitely the perfect little splurge. I remember curling up with it with a really good cup of coffee and browsing through it and dreaming about my own house one day.
I’m 54 and want to be able to retire at 60 to do that I need to spend intentionally and save but I completely agree. I want to have a retirement where I can buy the things that give me joy and one of those things is being able to travel .I’ve realised that will be much harder on a limited income so I’m trying to think really carefully over the next few years about how I prepare for this. I really love audible I think that’s a worthwhile expense and I do use the library and the BorrowBox app I’m in the UK. I think they’re all things that are worth spending my money on and I do really enjoy having a coffee and a nice coffee shop. I just need to make sure that I’m not doing that too often because it does become expensive. I’m also spending quite a lot on reaching my fitness goals this year that’s important for me to give myself the best chance to enjoy a healthy retirement, so I consider that an investment in myself.
What an absolutely perfect list. The fact that you’re planning all of this ahead of time is such a good thing because that is what will make it happen.
Greetings from Montreal. I enjoy using my iPad Pro. I, too use it for everything. Love reading books on it. No need to dust and always near by. Will replace it when the need arises. Being in my sixties, good money spent on good shoes and a winter coat.
Good morning from Victoria, Australia. I live and travel in a vehicle so basic living is a must. I spend money on travel and do like to treat myself sometimes with a pedicure. I also splurge on nice hand soaps and body lotions. I don't wear a lot of jewelry but when I do, it is good quality. I agree about your teeth. I have just spent $3000 on mine. 😁
Thanks for sharing! Oh my goodness, the dental thing I absolutely bond with you. Anything to do with teeth is so expensive but it’s important to keep them healthy.
It is kind of refreshing to have someone talk about what they do spend on. After all, we retired folks have worked all our lives and do deserve to spend our money on some of life’s pleasures. My husband cannot travel any more so we do enjoy lunch out. It gets him out of the house and I enjoy the break from cooking. I love the theatre. I go about once a month. It is the big light in my life.
This is a great video. In retirement videos there is plenty of focus on paring life down when one of the best things about retirement is being able to treat ourselves guilt free. Some of the smallest things can make us feel pampered, special or even lux
This is real talk for real people! I have a splurge thing for lipstick! Am 70...been searching for the perfect shade for 50 years...ha. We shouldn't be made to feel guilty for purchases that make us happy and that aren't over the top money wise for our respective budgets.Great to see you talking about things you do buy instead of like those people who suck the life out of you by telling you to not buy this or that. Noticed most of them have a financial "tracker" or some kind of device that will "help" you... for a price of course. Anyway, very refreshing post!
Lol, yes I know exactly what you mean. That’s exactly why I did the video. Some of my other videos focus on living a simple life and I just didn’t want people to get an idea that I never buy anything or do anything. Like I said in the video, I’m just a normal person living a normal life and I certainly do like to treat myself every now and then.
Another great video ! Would you please share if you use your iPad to save your you tube content videos and if you use it for any other app such as Microsoft Office ? Do you use the in built digital keyboard? And lastly ,😊what storage capacity and generation of iPad you use? Thank you
@@SDB1992 I have the iPad Air and it is the 5th generation with the 256 gb capacity. I do not store my video content on it. It does not have that kind of storage capacity. All of my videos are stored on an external hard drive. I do not use Microsoft apps on it at all. I typically do all my work on Google apps. I do use the built-in keyboard. My actual RUclips work like my editing is done on my laptop. Edit - realistically I probably need an iPad Pro.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful videos. I love nice sweaters too and I really like the one you are wearing now! I also love good food and great books. My special treat is when I finished an art journal to go and buy a new one. I also love beautifully illustrated art books to inspire more art work. I enjoy starting a new art project. I do water colours and some acrylic also. Like you I live in a brutally cold climate in the winters so when it gets a little warmer I love love love to go on nature walks with my little Yorkshire. I am retiring at the end of the month. I will not be bored! I also want to write. God bless you!
“ I wear everything I have in my closet “ this is something to aim for !! I am in my 40s and absolutely love your content - good guidance for the upcoming decade . Thank you .
Lol yes, I wear everything in my closet because I don’t actually have too many “real” clothes 😂😂 I have a lot of Lululemon workout wear which in my view don’t qualify as real clothes. I just dislike having things laying around, not getting used. I have decluttered a lot of things over the past four years so don’t want things to accumulate again.
I feel the exact same thing about my iPad. I get all phone messages on my iPad so don’t feel the need to carry my phone at all times. I watch everything on it. All my artwork is done on it. Pictures are on it. It’s a miraculous device!
Wow, that’s cool that you do your artwork on the iPad. I can’t even draw straight line so I never even thought that one could use it for that but you’re so right on. My son used to do a lot of of his artwork on a tablet.
@ I use Procreate. It’s an astonishing drawing app made for the iPad. I taught myself to do portraits of my Grandchildren. With lots of help from many RUclips videos! Your son probably knows it well.
Taking care of teeth and gums is one of the best thing you can do for your health. I go every 6 months and it adds so much to my overall health. Movement is also my gift to myself. I go to stretch and flex twice a week, yoga twice a week and badminton with friends. It helps my mental health. I just found your channel and love your message! Thank you for sharing.
Yes, totally agree about the movement part as well. I have to be honest and say I’ve really procrastinated this past week with Christmas and filming and just how busy things are. I will need to get right back in shape as soon as Christmas is done.
That sweater IS Adorable! I’m happy that I have so much in common with your goals and preferences!I now feel validated. 😀. About 10 years back I evaluated how I wanted to live, consume, etc. I have 7 more years till retirement and living with intention is the best decision I’ve made! I appreciate your channel so much!
Hello from Minnesota! I love my iPad and read or listen to books on it. I also splurge on fresh flowers to brighten up my home. Just happened onto your channel and look forward to more of your videos.
Hi there, l also love buying good clothing especially sweaters, and sweatshirtstoo, l also read alot of books, l get books as gifts for my Birthday and at Christmas gifts, hugsssss ❤❤❤
I’m so with you on the travel to see my grandchildren, my iPad is my lifeline, and yes books, books, and more books! I’m glad you mentioned dental care……that is not a splurge. It has been medically proven that good dental hygiene is essential to good overall health. All sensible smart choices, new subscriber here 🤗.
I have a small 11 year old dog. I love her so much. She is my companion. In the last 6 years I have spent $5,000 n her TEETH! Last Feb I spent $4,000 on a 5 night trip to Hawaii.
Oh my goodness, I know what it’s like to spend money on an ageing pet. I used to have a kitty cat. She passed away at the age of 19. The last three years of her life were one vet bill after another. But they’re like part of the family! The trip to Hawaii was definitely a good splurge!

Thanks for your video.. I also spend "a lot of" money on good food. I like to cook and to eat good. I am a german retiree leaving Germany for the South of France 5 years ago. So I also have to look at my money, because life is very expensive here. All the best for you.
I feel like I am really lucky to have good teeth. When I was growing up my mother was a stickler about having us brush our teeth and go to the dentist regularly. As a young person, I hated it and wondered why she had this obsession. Now I am so grateful. My teeth and gums are healthy and I don't have to spend lots of money at the dentist, which is incredibly expensive here in the U.S. Also, I like Talbots also -- their blouses and pants are great quality and last for a long time.
ROY KIRKHAM is so good❤😊
Now that I am in my sixties, I will splurge on good quality shoes. They still need to be cute, but I also want the comfort of a well made shoe!
Amen to that!
I definitely agree!!
We have a shoe store in town that actually measures your feet and puts the shoe on your foot-just like the old days :) I'm planning on getting more of my shoes there because I can see what I'm getting and the shoes will actually fit my feet.
💯
👍🏻
I have two splurges: art and craft supplies and audio books. I listen while I paint and craft. So peaceful.
Oh, that sounds really nice!
Husband and i retired two years ago. We live in a small home, rarely go out to dinner, dont buy expensive clothes. Our big splurge is going on trips, staying in nice accommodations and enjoying good food and wine.
Love that!
@@kristirichards2249 how wonderful! I’d rather have experiences than things.
I retired three years ago. Road trips to national parks and other fabulous destinations are my splurge. I stay in exquisite suites in luxury-rustic lakefront lodges with exceptional cuisine. I'm averaging four such trips a year.
That’s a lovely splurge!
Yes! I love buying my grandchildren that are here in Calgary little treats as well.
Flowers-I need to “treat” myself more this way
@@rosiheyer5501same here but I have a group of friends who buy magazines we all like, so read, and pass on after putting our initial on the front, that way we know who hasn't read it yet. We're all enjoying the content, but saving on the cost. It works for us.
Yes the flowers! I'm not retired but close to the empty nest and few things make me happier than fresh flowers in my environment. :)
@@vickyharris5244yes! I’m stopping at my teeth! Looking after all the other body parts naturally 😊
I got my Invisalign at 59. So glad I did too. 😃
I did this in my 50s too, worth every penny and no regrets
I really enjoyed this! My splurge is once-a-week daycare for my dog. He’s a mini dachshund and the light of my life, but he’s ALOT! Once a week I don’t have 13 pounds of this guy following me everywhere and sticking his cold wet nose near my lunch! The best part is that I know he loves it there. He has play time twice a day with other dogs and that is his favorite thing ever! When I pick him up we are both so happy to see each other! Hugs, kisses, and cuddles. Win/Win
Love that!
Im happy to splurge for both of us.😊❤
I love this! Dogs are so much fun & have been a big parts of our lives. I never regret money spent on them.
Once a month I take myself out into the city, go at an art gallery or show, play and dine out with a glass of good quality wine.
That sounds absolutely perfect to me! Especially the art gallery part. I absolutely love going to art galleries.
Lovely habit!
I bought a membership to the AGO in Toronto and it is SO wonderful to make a day of it at the art gallery!
I think retirement should be a balance of saving and spending. I want to enjoy my life while I'm on the planet.
My thoughts, exactly. I really believe in living life in a balance.
You have saved your entire life. retirement is the time to spend!
. i think it's ok to spend bedause there might not be much time left to enjoy . and we will find out pretty quickly when there is no money left . but that's ok too .
Lol, so true about the phone, totally didn’t even think about that. Yes my iPad is definitely my life.
Mine too!
👍
Love your videos Raina! my phone, laptop and love splurging on fresh flowers, plants and books. Enjoy your visit in Australia, God bless
Thanks so much! 😊 I love fresh flowers as well. Even if it just means picking up a little grocery store bundle.
Oh my goodness me too paper towels and the best toilet paper I live by myself and I have a stockade in the basement😂😂
I buy Tissues! Growing up … I always had trouble with my sinus … still do! I buy Tissues because we never had them we had to use Toliet Paper! 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Wow, we very often used newspaper cut into squares too when I was growing up! Definitely like to have a good stock of toilet paper!
Spending money on experiences is never a waste of money. Theres a big world out there ❤❤❤
Yes, you’re absolutely correct. I’m not a huge traveler, but I do enjoy getting out and seeing other places every now and then.
amen to that. I'm 75 and what little money I had I spent on book or experiences.
however... if one isn't able to travel for health or financial reasons... an experience can be a little adventure.... to store in the memory.
Really nice sheets and my favorite perfume. Those make me happy.
Oh my goodness, I am so with you on the nice sheets! I will do almost anything to ensure a good night sleep… lol the downfall of menopause… sleepless nights!
My fave perfume and lots of flowers for my yard in spring !
I love your sweater!❤
My splurge is good coffee beans that I grind myself for a great cup of coffee ❤
I love your comment. Thank you for sharing. Happy holidays to you.
What a great and inspiring story!❤️
@ awww thank you ☺️
luv this so much!!! poor people and people with gov plans have to wait months sometimes for appointments and then finding a dentist who will accept things like medical … Even with good insurance which i have … dental work is outrageous !!!

:first time seeing your channel enjoyed it I signed up
iPad, bedding, dark chocolate and scarves are my splurges.
Enjoying food with friends is well worth the spend. Experiences are so important.
So happy my parents stressed dental care. I never miss and have a beautifully healthy smile.
I know, mine did too. I guess it just stayed with me.
So much easier just to pick up of an iPad then to sit there and fuss with the TV and remote controls, etc.
@@TheDriftwoodlover - YES! An investment in self. I like that.
If you buy well-made clothing in a classic style, it can definately be an investment.
…’I’m not a Luddite’..🤣 best comment, ever. Love it!
lol, well, it seemed appropriate 😂🤣
Thank you.
Hi Ella. Hope you’re doing well. I totally get being frugal in order to see the people you love. Wishing you a lovely Christmas.
I have grandchildren in Calgary, as it happens. And can’t wait for visits to see them and my daughter.
I’m so glad you are enjoying your retirement and treating yourself well
Thank you so much. And thank you for watching.
There’s a real English 1930s vibe with your sweater. It’s lovely!
Awww, you’re actually right I never thought of that! Now I love that sweater even more.
I agree! Spend in your means and enjoy life! Like you said, we work hard for our money, so it is ok to treat ourselves when we can!
Good on you to take care of yourself!
So true! Thank you for watching. Hope you have a great holiday season!
@smallretiredlife You as well!
I use my iPad all the time. I love it.
Good for you! Love your jumper - Greetings from Melbourne 🇦🇺 Enjoy your time👍
I value dentistry too!
I agree on good supplements. I also take good fish oil and Vit D. We can’t always get enough through food. 😊
@@smallretiredlife Gorgeous!:)
I love dark Chocolate
Great chocolate. Not cheap wax filled chocolate.
Lol, you’re in good company. I’ve had a few people mention that chocolate is a splurge for them that they enjoy.
Same here!!
Me too. As a Swiss expat living in Canada, good quality chocolate is a MUST in my household.
I splurge on organic foods and cleaners, organic sheets for my bed, Haagen Dazs ice cream, and cardmaking supplies. Every couple years I buy an Italian (or German) made cozy, warm, scarf to add to my collection. Merry Christmas!
Nice list…especially the ice cream! Merry Christmas to you!
My big splurge is half n half.❤😂❤

I went overboard when lock down ended. I have too much. 😔
I agree about iPads too. I use mine all the time.
Love the sweater on you Raina! Its gorgeous. Tabolts here I come! I also splurge on vacation with family and children and good shoes and books, hard copies.
Love it!! Sounds like you and I would get along just superbly. Happy holidays to you and yours.
So true! I remember my grandmother as well. And I didn’t get to see her very often because she lived in a Czech Republic and I lived here in Canada.
My TV is also just a decoration. 😅
You are so right❤
We are retired 63 yo female.
Love Nikol!😻
@@karenkleiner3259 I told my husband I wanted her biggest set with the make up brushes for Christmas. I am so happy with it. It was a pretty big splurge for me. But he said I was worth it.
I Love buying good foods too! Shopping at a cool-organic foods market is a fav to do.
Mine too! We have a store called Sunterra here…it’s so good. Expensive. I don’t go there often, but they sell good cheese
Thank you for sharing. I agree with you. I also splurge on some of the 8 things that you buy. Love your down to earth and true to life approach😊
I am so happy for you going to see your grandchildren
Thank you so much🙏 I am overjoyed that it will be happening.
I enjoy spending money on my craft hobby addiction. It brings me joy and I look forward to my crafting time.
That sounds absolutely perfect to me!
@@NGD1953 amen
Show us your sweater collection!!!
Soon! I will definitely do a closet tour of some kind even if it’s just to do some kind of an organizational thing.
Same here! I love my iPad mini I’d be lost without it as it’s my everything too.
I love your sweater! I recently splurged on some vintage 2000 fair isle sweaters to replace some modern , low quality ones in my winter wardrobe….😉👍🏼
I really love Fairisle sweaters!
Awesome list 🙌🏻
I love your list and agree with them all! Plus for me high end bed and chairs for comfort along with great shoes!
Great shoes are definitely featuring heavily in the comments 😀
I applaud you for your choice to invest in Invisalign. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with investing in a pretty & healthy smile.
Talbots is a classy store, can't go wrong there for a certain type of stylishness.
Thank you I completely agree. I always seem to find something there that fits my retired life.
Well said! 💯
I buy from Talbots also. Beautiful clothes.
Yes they are! I also like that they always have really good sales.
Can you please do a video on how you use your planner on your iPad and how you do your annual planning? Thanks in advance.
Absolutely can do that. Would be a great video in the early part of the new year.
I’d love this too! I’m interested in the planner as well as any other iPad tools and apps you love.
I rent a studio space with a friend , I just love to have a space to go to anytime I want , and I love to buy my art supplies.
I enjoy the quality and content of your videos. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing! The sweater is from Talbots.
What a great reason to earn extra money! Well done, and I wish you the best of times with your son and his family.
Awww, thank you. I’m so looking forward to seeing them.
I loved this light hearted video. Please make more light hearted video. Merry Christmas
Thank you so much for the kind words. And thank you for watching. Merry Christmas to you as well.
I love your sweater ❤
Thank you. It’s from Talbots.
Yes! Thank you! Very much appreciate you watching and wishing you the very best in the new year.
Hi there, l am 65, and I love reading books, Have A MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅 🎄
I’m so happy you’re going to Melbourne to see your grand kids. ❤
Awww, thank you! 🙏
Thank you for sharing these things with us.
In the last 6 years I have spent $5,000
n her TEETH!

Thank you and thank you for watching…..and South of France? I am so jealous! 🙏🙌🏻
@@smallretiredlife 🥰 you are so sympathetic!
Thank you for watching. And yes, Talbots clothes are pretty decent quality. I have a couple of sweaters from them that I’ve had for a number of years.
Oh my goodness l do the same thing with buying Country Living Christmas magazine and l get them out to read them again ,each Christmas…..
