Being laid off in your late 50's is so hard, but there is opportunity after such a negative event if you take control. Here is my story and how I dealt with the aftermath of an unexpected, late-life lay-off. Small retired life....the beginning!

Welcome to Small Retired Life. I am Raina, I live in Canada and this is my first RUclips video. In this channel, we will talk about retirement, finances, diet, health...anything that encompasses a retired lifestyle.
Glad I found your channel. I want to see every one of your videos. 😊
Thanks for sharing your experience. They take the time to onboard and train all employees but can then layoff at a drop of the hat and are not concerned if it happens next week or in three years or even care about the 3 years they think they’d only get out of a pre-retiree.
Very pretty, I especially like the fresh apples as decor, what a nice idea:)
I really enjoyed your video. I'm 65 and I'm finding so much of what you're saying, is true. I have the same anxiety issue about clutter. 😊 Your place looks organized, bright, cozy ,cheery and elegant. This is the same look that I do now. I agree being frugal is important. But, you hit the nail on the head about keeping something in life that we enjoy. Like going to the art gallery or what ever a person's particular thing is. Thank you for making this video. 😊
I live alone and I love to decorate for the seasons. Christmas decor is not my thing but I will decorate for the winter season which lasts from December to March. I love snowflakes and the winter village ice skating scenes along with the little white ceramic houses!
That sounds absolutely perfect to me. I usually take all my decorations down December 26. And then I have a winter type of decor similar to what you are describing.
@@smallretiredlife , thank you for the reply and acknowledgement of my comment! I just happened to be scrolling and your channel appeared. I'm glad it need. New subscriber!🌷
Raina, I enjoy your channel. I was also laid off at 56, I'm not 57 and will be starting my new (and last) job soon. Could you give some tips on starting a new job in your late 50s? I'm no longer the young and inexperienced 20 something. It feels different now.
Wow, I totally get what you’re saying. The job I was laid off from I started at the age of 50. And I have to say that I somehow knew it was going to be my last job. And you kind of go in differently than when you started a new job as a younger person. I don’t know what to say to you except that the best way to deal with a new job at that age is to kind of look at it as a year by year thing as opposed to I’m gonna spend 10 years here. It also actually puts you in a better headspace if you look at it as I’m gonna be there for a year and then I’ll see, and then the next year after that you say to yourself again, I’m gonna be here for another year and then then we’ll see.
@smallretiredlife good advice 👌
I just found your channel and agree that there are a lot of channels out there that I watch but have been looking for calm and easy content. I think we all need to start creating the content we are looking for. I hope your channel monetization has gone well.
Beautiful!
Lovely ❤. Very calm vibe.
I feel like it’s hard to understand it!❤
Investing does take a little bit of learning. But it’s good to read up on a few basics.
What’s going on in the big, red bowl?
I am making apple bread. I have shots of it at the end of the video.
I watched your introduction video and I hope you have a fun digital journey ahead!
Hi. New follower. Your decorating came out beautifully. You have some very pretty pieces. 🎄
Welcome here! Thank you for watching and the lovely compliment. I have had some of my pieces for a long time and I love them, especially some of the vintage finds.
Beautiful home, beautiful decorations 🎄 Happy Thanksgiving 🍁 We ALL have something to be Thankful! I am Thankful for my family, health, small YT channel and that I came across your channel and great contents.
Thank you so much and happy Thanksgiving to you. I know in the US it’s next week sometime on the 28th I believe. We already had ours in Canada back in October. Having it in October gives us a couple of months to prepare our stomachs for the next round of feasting!
Love it! Tasteful, cozy and calm. I really like your collection of trees, I might have to start my own😉
They are wrong that no one will watch the first video!
I'd date you!
Shared your video. That's cool that you didn't listen to your boss's excuses. I bet you are enjoying retired living now.
So much agree with you especially on clutter. So glad you love art!🎨
Wise words! I really feel like I didn't mourn the loss of my job at 61 as much as I should have, I'm still going through the process. It was really helpful to hear your point about not living in the past and growing on your life now into the future.❤
Thank you so much for the comment. Glad the video resonated with you. I think it’s hard losing your job when you’re older. We get a lot of validation from our careers. We then have to find that validation or sat from other things and it takes time.
Looks beautiful
Hi Rena, I just found your channel this morning and I've already watched a few of your videos. Can't wait to watch the rest. I have a similar experience but I'm a bit older when I was 61 company I worked for for almost 20 years restructured and that was the end of my job I did get a pretty good Severance and a bit of unemployment. It's been a year and a half, and that is gone. I'm really not financially ready to retire but finding a job has been a nightmare like you I've applied for so many jobs and I'm pretty sure people don't want to take a chance on someone in their 60s even though I plan to work until at least 70. I started my own RUclips channel and it's been rewarding. I also I'm trying to support myself with my painting so that is the direction I'm going in RUclips. Thanks for your insight it is reassuring that there are others going to the same predicament as myself. Keep up the good work.🤩
Love this. 🎄🎄🎄 My high school and middle school kids are still home but after 30 plus years of lots of decor. I’m tired. 😂 so I’ve gone to a more minimal approach too. I find just having lights up makes it so festive.
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I used to decorate every room when I had kids here. And now I just do the living room, a tiny bit in my bedroom and a little bit in the kitchen. And even then the bedroom and the kitchen is just using bowls that are already there and filling them with something festive instead. I just put red bows on everything and it makes the house scream Christmas 🤣
Thank you so much! 64 year old not-yet- retired female novice here!
Wow! Stunning. I greatly appreciate how every object in your house is curated. It looks precious and expensive. Love ❤it.
Thank you so much. Most of my things are not really expensive except for some of my furniture, which I like to keep for many years, hence I purchase quality. Also purchasing vintage or secondhand is a great way to get amazing things for a fraction of the cost.
I love your style and tastes, thanks for sharing!
Beautiful, LOVE your paintings, tfs ❤🇨🇦
Please share the secret of your skincare! I am 52 with a fairly good skin and also want to keep this smooth for the next 10 years, like you do!
I will totally have a skincare video coming up probably sometime maybe in January I’m thinking. Thank you for the really nice compliment. Totally makes my week! I was actually feeling a little old yesterday so your comment comes at a good time.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing, live alone as well retired…..cheers from Alberta ❤🇨🇦
So so excited to see when Albertans watch my videos! Thank you so much for supporting my channel! Calgary is absolutely snowed in today.
You are doing great and you are so authentic-hard to find authenticity in RUclipsrs! Happy for you and it is very evident that you put in a lot of effort! Congratulations on getting monetized-you deserve it!
Thank you so much for your kind words 🙏
Are you an Earth sign? I am a virgo. You sound like the mature version of me. Down to the attitude to finances, Audi driving, multiple real estate purchases. I am on track to retire by 53 years old (10 years from now). I traveled alone ( even when I was married). I love exploring ruins and museums alone. lol
lol, no, Scorpio, and I absolutely fit the Scorpio stereotype!
I started posted my video again, this channel of mind created last covid time then stop posting,Thank you so much for your encouragement video, made me to continue of doing it,im late 40s..but I need subscriber.
Perfect. I love the minimal decorations. I haven’t decorated in a long time but plan to this year. I’m trying desperately to get back to doing the things I love. I’ve been stuck for 10 years and I’m finally tired of it. 😌😌😌
Yes!! Do it! I always feel so good when I’m sitting in a cosy room that feels very festive with either my glass of wine or a cup of coffee… it’s just so nice!
Thank you for the information. That is great you were able to do this so quickly! Now subbed to you and thanks for sharing.
So festive! ❤
Love all your decor. Beautiful, well done.
I live alone with my pet, & I love to decorate for winter…. Not too many people come over so it’s just for me as well, I have a 3ft tree lights only, white village houses, lots of greens (most without glitter not a fan) pinecones, led flameless candles. I would say mine style is Nordic minimal. Everything is neutral…. greens, whites, brown. Now my coworkers are doing the same thing, everything will stay up until march
Sounds absolutely lovely! A festive home just adds so much to the season! I can’t imagine not having at least a little bit of Christmas in the home.
I love your channel :-) I’m not retired yet. But I’m trying to plan for it, in about 10-20 years. My industry is very similar. You asked about other topics for the future… some ideas 🤷♀️ I’d love to learn your experience on how Social Security is different in the US compared to Canada. I’d love to learn how healthcare is different in the US compared to Canada. I’d love to learn how Taxes in our Working years are different in Canada compared to the US. It’s all so interesting to me and I greatly appreciate your calmness and peacefulness in all of your videos. I don’t feel like I’m being sold to and I don’t feel like I’m being rushed nor do I feel as though affiliate marketing is your fixes. It feels like we’re having a cup of coffee sharing stories. Thank you again.
Yes it’s interesting do they have S&P 500 in Canada ?
Canada‘s main index is the S&P/TSX60. But you can purchase a Canadian ETF that follows the S&P 500. I think a very common one trades under the symbol ZSP.
Great job! So festive and peaceful!
Lovely home and nicely decorated for Xmas
Thank you for this video. I am 62 and live in Australia and have been thinking about starting a channel and you have further inspired me 🌷
I love my retired single life. I’m happy to see that other people feel like me. Cheers!
Qué decoración más elegante y delicada. La música maravillosa y el paisaje nevado precioso. Muchas gracias , Rania ❤
Thank you for watching 🙏
Beautiful home ready for Christmas love the lots of snow outside.😊
Found your channel and enjoyed your video.I share a lot of your thoughts, I am also retired 2 years ago and I am from Finland.
So beautiful ❤. I love it
Lovely decor. Is there a link or name to the screensaver you are using? I love all of it💕
Thank you so much. You know I got the screensaver along time ago, but I found it on Etsy. I just can’t remember the name of the shop there’s like tons of them that are beautiful on Etsy. That’s where I normally buy my screensavers.
Actually I found the Etsy store, it’s called OilCanvasNostalgia.
I think I would like to see your swearing video….that would be normal😝
Good job - love it, well done😊
