Such a great video Nigel. Just wanted to say as a viewer you shouldn’t worry so much about the images you produce in your VLOGs. I, like most others, thoroughly enjoy watching your videos for the adventures, educational content and for your personality. For me, the photography itself is just a bonus - if anything it reinforces the fact that landscape photography isn’t always rainbows and butterflies - which is a good realist outlook! Thanks for the continued inspiration mate, looking forward to next week’s video already 👍🏼🙏. Henry.
Henry has nailed it! Love your content, didn't see anything I didn't like aside from the wounds on your hand.
Thanks so much Henry and keep up your vlogs. How are you liking being back in the UK?
Nigel Danson no problem mate, thanks a lot. Yeah enjoying it massively! I’m very inspired by our landscapes 🙏. Thanks again mate 👍🏼
Henry Turner Morning
I really would not be too hard on yourself this is real world stuff and you are showing us what you really need to do and the amount of work that is involved in getting beautiful landscapes. Not to mention all the editing and computer work. So if your goal is to show people how to be better at photography then this is probably your best video so far. I particularly enjoyed the part where you handheld the video camera and showed the different compositional possibilities that were going through your mind. This is great stuff !! showing it how it really is makes you stand out from the rest. Sometimes we are our own worst critic but this video is great.
Thanks Martin - really appreciate the kind words.
This video reminds me of how beautiful this planet is.
Certainly is - I love Earth 😁
Killer drone photos! You’re right, photography is hard work, but so worth it. Thanks very much!
Its just credible for professional like you to produce a video like this, in addition you have the drone, the cameras, the composition, the lighting ,the commentary and so on to take care of, my hat off !
Many thanks Bernard!
As you are puffing and panting, sneezing and wheezing at 6:12 have you ever taken time out to wonder at the beauty of the hard work and graft that the person who built that stone wall went through. There is a pathway made of 'on the end' stone on the way up to Lockerbrook farm in the Peak District that never fails to get my admiration of the hard times of the past that make places like this SOoo beautiful.
That photo at 18:15 is beautiful. I think it's a real highlight. That drone footage is spectacular. Thanks for the nice video.
Thanks a lot Thomas - yep the photo has grown on me and another version on instagram is better I think
To be honest Nigel, the colour rock shots especially with the tree did it for me 👌
Nigel, I can totally relate when you say you had too much on your plate. I’ve done the same thing many times. Trying to shoot with one two cameras, one new, plus a drone, audio gear, and all the rest of the things, big and little, that have to be tended during a shoot. It’s overwhelming. I guess that’s why it’s called a production!
Have been in Scotland in 2019 by motorbike and have seen a beautifull landscape. No Photogear with me but just a small camera. I get inspired by all of your youtubes in landscape photography. Here in the Netherlands every thing is flat. ;-)
Excellent work Nigel, and the way to look for the photographic composition is a heavy work but I like your pleasure in doing it and I am grateful that there are people like you, who share it for those of us who like photography. Kind Regards.
A great video full of useful information. I am amazed at how much you manage to do at once and get such good images. Don't be so hard on yourself...........
Patience is key. Even with portraits.
Great conclusion Nigel! Taking the time to actually soak it all in while on a gorgeous location. We tend to forget that sometimes.
Great video Nigel and a valuable message. There is a term called 'task loading' . The more tasks you load on yourself the less you are able to do any of them well. Having said that, you got some lovely images that most people would be more than happy with.
you make vlogging look easy i went to . a waterfall last week i was like a giddy kid and in the end the vlog looked like a benny hill video
You should see me on the fells - I am the same
Nigel Danson being excited has it’d draw backs lol but its all good :-)
Drone shots is awesome
Highlight of my Sunday morning.
When there's so much choice, it's like being a kid a lolly shop. Great vid and a good reminder to keep calm and savour the scene you're in. The new Mav did so well with the windy conditions....as did your hat too.
Hi. Very good video and interesting comments. Thanks. Jacques from Québec Canada
I think you have summed up my biggest mistake, rushing around thinking 'I am here and have to make the most of it' rather than slowing down and looking. I think we forget as viewers (well I do) how much work you have to put in behind the scenes to give us such good vlogs as well as coming away with fantastic images. Looking forward to see what you bring us next Sunday :-)
Very helpful tips, thank you.
Nigel, it would be interesting to hear you speak about when and why you choose to use the Fuji over the Nikon and how much, if at all, this has to do with APS-C vs full frame or if it has more to do with different performance of the lenses or sensors, or whichever other factors you bring to bear on that decision.
Hi Tony - actually would use Nikon but waiting for z7. I am going to try that and then look at that or GFX. Fuji is best aps-c cam
It was a great video, and the concept of scouting out a new location is something I would applaud greatly. As an enthusiast rather than a pro, it demonstrates perfectly the problem most of us have when you look out of the window 300 days out of 365 in any given year and think 'no thanks, not going out in that with an expensive camera and lens'. This is the difference, to a pro, a camera and any other equipment is just a tool for the job, and has to be replaced if things go badly. To an enthusiast, if you kill your camera etc by exposing it to dust / rain / dropping you have to decide 'do I get it repaired, do I replace it, and do I mind not being able to eat or go on holiday for a year as a result?' I would love to see a short video detailing how you protect your gear and yourself in these conditions - what footwear and clothing works best, what kind of bag is waterproof / resistant and protects best from dropping or falling etc. Any of us who have wandered further than 200 metres from the car in light rain know what I am getting at :) If you can give us some help in planning for the conditions that the UK weather so often hits us with I would enjoy learning how to go about it. I would love to get some more shots like those you have here, but the thought of my Nikon getting soaked fills me with fear. Keep up the good work, always watch your output with keen interest.
Most cameras are ok in rain as weather sealed. I have never had a problem with any camera I have owned over the last 20 years and have been in a lot of rain storms. Maybe give it a go.
Always honest, engaging and entertaining Nigel. Rushing around trying to get the best composition, conscious of the clock ticking away. We've all done it, but you ended up with a couple of great images!
Beautiful quite haunting shots, great Chanel Nigel.
Thanks so much Jillian
Thanks for making my soggy weekend better (I am in the path of what is now Tropical Storm Florence, downgraded from Hurricane Florence; lots of rain and wind but so far fine staying indoors). I have been guilty many times of trying to get too many different subjects on a trip, especially if I feel pushed for time. Thanks to you I believe I am better a slowing down, stepping back (or away completely) and making a better assessment prior to clicking that shutter.
Eek - stay safe
I like the bit about having only one battery, Imagine....I just got back from Iceland, I had one battery in the camera and 2 extras with a charger. Only problem was I grabbed 2 extra batteries and charger for a different camera body. I Found my error while photographing Puffins on the Westman Islands as the battery was getting low. I have to shout out to a Airbnb host who put it out on her Facebook group about me needing a charger and a local town person lent me his charger for the remainder of my trip as I traveled Iceland. Gotta love the photography community! Love the people of Iceland! Nigel, Thanks for the space to share this.
That sounds terrible - but great a tog came to the rescue... Iceland without a camera would be scary
As usual Friend....you did not disappoint us.We all have had days that were not so good and for you on this day, you came home with that great shot at the end of the video.
We love you Nigel! THANK YOU!
I love you all too
I thoroughly enjoyed the drama and challenges of weather in this video. Often us amateurs are only in a location for a short time with limited chance to return and you do get carried away and just do too much. My takeaway from today was focus on composition and wait for the light.
Oh, and that drone footage in the wind was just spectacular.
Thanks Gavin - appreciate the kind words
Great views and images. Was always confused as to which rocks were the Lion and the Lamb. Somebody told me it's not the big ones. It's great to see it again.
Stunning place.
Understanding light quality - a very good lesson for us all Nigel. I wrestle with it every time I go out - but shoot anyways, and it helps me find "the good light" - If I didn't, I wouldn't know what "good light" is. Thanks for another great lesson. Autumn is a lot sooner this year in the midwest - lots of autumn colors now - I'm out early, looking for that good light.
Good light is the key. Morning / evening important times or when there is fog or rain
Nigel, the Drone Master!...
Now go to an urban scenery and give us more of your fantastic mastery 🥰
One day...
@@NigelDanson Looking forward to it :-)
The B&W shot 👍. Don't lose the hat, lol. Go Giants! Thanks to you I recently visited Slackers Hill and enjoyed shooting there. Thanks for sharing, keep up the great work.
Thanks. interesting thoughts about going to new locations.
We were also in the Lake District last week and the weather was great for waterfalls but not much else, surprised you got anything half decent given the conditions. Really like the Ullswater one as it captures the mood superbly.
I love those conditions - rain is my favorite as adds atmosphere.
So many great tips on this channel! you are one of my top resources on youtube for learning about Landscape Photography, Thanks!
Another beautifully produced video. I completely agree with you about trying too many compositions. Some of my best photos have come when I take one or two prime lenses and concentrate on compositions that work with those lenses, as opposed to the shotgun approach where we want to have a lens for every focal length and composition.
Nigel
I formative and very well done. Many lessons to be learned and some excellent advice: quality not quantity: concentrate on finding the scene that will translate into an image that truly represents what the photographer felt and was inspired by.
Peter
Thanks for bringing us along during your trip!
I think you’re right Nigel, but I still enjoyed the video. The drone looks very promising. I was on that rock on Helm Crag last year, brilliant views. The river on the last photo coming from the Easedale Tarn is called Sour Milk Gill. Cheers.
Happiest person I have seen talking about his sliced finger haha. Great vid.
It wasn't too bad thankfully
thanks for this insightful video! really helpful!
thanks for sharing this with us,
really enjoyed watching this
How awesome it is you put out this video with this theme today! Look forward to my video on Tuesday! 😉
Mads, I really enjoy your videos too. I just got back from my second trip to Iceland and must say I am still not happy with the quality of the photos I took. I guess I may have to return again!
Look forward to it Mads
Could not agree with you more. Over the years I have found that ultimately I cannot take a good photo (one of 12 per year as per Ansel Adams) on my first visit to a new location. At some locations I have literally had to go back 5-6 times before I am finally happy with the photo.
Agree. Although if I stay there for 5-6 hrs I can often get something
Great video. I really like your explanations on how you process through your compositions.
Great honest video Nigel, I've just discovered your channel and gaining inspiration for my own adventures... remember at best you capture a killer photo...at worst you get a day out in the hills and a workout...win/win in my book!
Love that last photo Nigel. Amazing light.
Hi Nigel, those photos turned out spectacular. All of the hard work to get those frames just compliments the stark landscape that you captured.
Great watch Nigel, the drone footage is stunning, photo wise I agree with your pick of the bunch, beautiful shot. To be honest I don't thing the wind helps matters, I don't mind rain snow sun anything but a constant gale just drains the enthusiasm and creativity out of me. But then again you shot awesome footage and a set of very good photos. Thumbs up mate.
Hi, I felt like I was with you! Very engrossed. Thank you.
Many thanks - appreciate the kind words
Great part of England; good drone footage; top photos (as usual); keep on breathing!
Mike in Oz
I will try
Thanks for taking us along. Seems like a bad day there is better than a good day other places. I would have had to take some photos in the evening. Jim
You forgot to mention what a slog it was to not only get up to the top of Holme Fell, but Helm Crag also :) I've dipped my toe into the waters of RUclips content creation and I am with you that sometimes the video creation bit and really get in the way of photography. I've not branched out into drone footage yet, and after seeing this video I think I might keep it that way! Great video Nigel, and a really good lesson to share.
Thanks for all your works. It's really helpful. 👍🏻
Sound advice, Nigel...... Find a great composition..... And then wait for the light 👍
absolutely love the first image.. its really special.. Also love the way you critic your own images, helps us to learn from your experiences - Would love if you can at any point in time do a photo critic session of images of your followers, the idea is just to improve and learn from your insights.
Many thanks - appreciate the kind words
I like the first drone photo, Nigel! The autumn colours are beginning up on the fells sooner than lower down, but I'm looking forward to this year's show and what we all make of it.
I missed your drone B-roll, Nigel, so good to have a lot of it in this video. Amazing!
Clicked like just for the hard work it looks like you had to put in for this one! I think I was in the Lakes on the same weekend and spent 90% of the time wiping rain off my lens and didn’t get anything worth keeping. Makes the good times all the better though!
A very nice video this week Nigel! The Lake District is such a beautiful area with so many scenic areas, I loved to visit it one day. Maybe the weather wasn't the best, but your images came out wonderful. Thank you for your Sunday videos, I look forward to them each and every week. Again, thank you, hold on to your hat in that wind and take care!
Thanks Steve - I enjoyed making this one. I love the lakes.
Nigel, new subscriber. Some beautiful shots here. My fav was at 18:05. I understand doing too much or not having a single goal, it's happened to me too, but, I am glad you provided the drone footage because I own the original magic and I'm trying my best to talk myself out of upgrading... unsuccessfully. Thanks again Nigel, looking forward to more.
Just discovered this channel! Thanks you so much the content is great and your a top guy.
Welcome aboard Stuart - thanks for the kind words
Great video Nigel. I'm thinking about buying the Mavic Pro 2 for taking still images. I have the Mavic Air but the image quality of the images aren't as good as I would like ...
I love that you still wear your Giants ball cap in all your videos. Probably something rare to see around the UK.
That looked like some crazy wind, but your video was rock solid, were you filming that from your Benro?
Great video as always, cheers from Chicago!
Yep - Benro!! Love my cap! May need to get a new one soon as getting well used
So inspirational. Thank you.
Despite your own doubts I really liked the video. Great drone footage and some great pictures. Thx for sharing!
Wow that was really gorgeous !!! I was wondering if you ever thought about doing a video on one of your workshops?? I think that would be really cool. If I hit the lottery I am signing up for a workshop ;) Have a great day and Keep em coming!!
Thanks Jane - yes I will be doing just that 👍
Love your videos and your philosophies nigel! I really hope to meet you when you come to new york. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Love your channel, such great content every time.
Fantastic video keep up the good work. I know the difficulties of trying to put a vlog together while trying to get a composition.
Nice video, Nigel. To me there is always some educational content I can take away from your videos. Apart from that it is always a pleasure to watch your vlogs on a Sunday morning. I also liked that “bad weather” B&W photo a lot that you showed at the end. Well done, indeed!
Thanks Thomas - yeah that was my fav shot.
Fantastic video Nigel, the last shot of the tarn is superb. 😊
You have really nice clouds in the UK
Hehe, I know the feeling... I recently got the new Mavic 2 and its an absolute beast. If I had your scenery I don’t think I would have even taken my camera out of my bag. But I’m glad you did... the lake shot was lovely.
Could you please talk more about focus. What was the focus point for the picture at 14:06? Did you focus stack or was that a single shot? Thanks.
Robert Hughes I'd like to know that too. I'm guessing the rocks in the mid-ground were the respective compositions' anchors and the focal points. I'd appreciate EXF data. I think we both like those images more than Nigel seems to have.
Really good question, i was going to ask the same thing.
Single shot - I focused on the distant mountain and as it was super wide everything up to around 70cm away was in focus at f8. Very rarely focus stack.
Useful video, thank you Nigel. Great images for the likes of me but very interesting to hear your perspective and thoughts. I think it'd be good if more pros showed what didn't work so well...for us beginners I think it's a very useful alternative approach. Thanks again!
Great video!!! Beautiful photos!!!
Honest! We don't always get what we set out to try and do...
Think that photo of Easedale Tarn is lovely though!
I love the image at 14:14, the light is so beautiful. I wish I lived near a location like that! Great video.
I love that last river shot! And that printed misty tree one is epic. Great vid man 👊
Nice video mate.sometimes things don't pan out as we think they are going to, makes the times they do even more special.
I learn this video, your helpful everybody that see stunning photo, well done and very interesting tutorial tips. 👌👍Thank you so much! sir.
Great vlog Nigel and your images were awesome. I'm not disagreeing with you on your point of not spreading yourself too thin, but I know for me, being able to get out is rare, and then to a new location even more so. I almost feel like I have to get as much as I can out of the time I do have. My images haven't been great by any means, but one thing I have been gaining from the experience is the ability to understand and move through my camera settings much faster. Also I've been training my eye to look for and spot potential compositions in a hurry. I know, all this contradicts everything you were talking about in your video but what I'm saying is sometimes you make yourself learn under fire, and in doing so you gain knowledge and proficiency that can be of great value when the time comes that you can afford to slow down. Again, great video Nigel and thank you for sharing.
Moving through your settings will really help
The rain image was so full of mood and emotion. But the light on your "unsure" photo was also incredible. Honestly I think it works. Yes, it is a little chaotic to the eye, but I don't mind that. I know the "one focal point" rule, but let's face it...how often in life do you get just one focal point in where you look with your eyes?
Thanks a lot Michael - check out Instagram there is a different version of that image.
@@NigelDanson Done! Like that one as well.
I was there the week before Nigel!!..but a year later of course.
Yes -good points made. Actually, not getting the killer shot in the vlog isn't an issue for me -since process, bad luck and error is part of the deal. Mind you, you did get some good ones anyway!
Morning enjoyed the video though looked like bloody hard going. I know you weren’t happy with the images but I think you’re being too hard on yourself, the rain on the water shot is great, moody, different and atmospheric. Also, like I’ve said before, it’s actually really helpful that things don’t go 100% for you, it’s helps the rest of us realise it’s not just us. Thanks.
Helm Crag is such a wonderful place to shoot from. Views towards Grasmere, Fairfield and the valleys are all spectacular in the right light. I feel the shot of Easedale Tarn may have worked better zoomed in, taking out the patch of harsh light in the sky. I see you also struggled with the wind. Good message Nigel, focus on one composition/area 👍
Thanks James
Holy crap you live in a uniquely beautiful part of the world. Such a crazy landscape :)
Try not to be to hard on yourself. Great Job keep up the work.
What a great location, really need to go back to the lakes some day. The drone shots look amazing!!!
Awesome Video Nigel
Hi! Just discover your channel. Its really nice. Usually I am watching more wildlife videos. But great to see landscapephotography as well. I just took my first step and uploadet my first video on nordic wildlife. A bit scary but fun. Keep up your great work, inspiring others.
Hey Nigel, you look younger without your hat. Heheh. Headed to Iceland. Hope to see the Northern Lights!
Ha ha - really? Thanks and enjoy Iceland
Hi, first vlog I’ve watched of yours and enjoyed it. I really like the music you played too. Cheers!
I damn love it Nigel.
Hello Nigel, just observed that you now have 63K subscribers when I subscribed you had just a few hundred. Congratulations you are doing very well. I love the Lake District. My wife and I just watched your vlog and guess what! We are going to book a holiday there on the account of viewing your video. Have a great day...
Brilliant - I should work for the tourist board. Thanks for the kind words.
Excellent video again. The ullswater shot is stunning. Thinking about doing helm crag next time I am up there. Looks a good place to photograph aircraft coming thro Grasmere as well as shooting landscapes. Thanks.
You won't regret it
