John Drummond but Pebbles has the right cute factor.... .....even as she runs around in the house moving all the shoes. That reminds me SO MUCH of a dog we had back in the days who placed shoes all over the house, n never in even pairs. So you could run around for like 20 minutes to find “the other shoe”. A couple of times I just gave up, and went out with a boot on one foot and a sneaker on the other, yes people looked almost so their eyes popped out. But I played it cool 😎 and saw myself as a trendsetter. Never really succeeded though 🤣🤪

I love your comment about not blaming the camera. I picked up my Nikon D810 used while in Alaska doing wildlife and landscapes. It seems the gentleman who purchased was displeased with it because he couldn't get a good photo with it. I looked at it and saw several problems with it right away, and it wasn't the camera. There were about a dozen idiotic settings on the menu, including being set to take double exposures. I got it from him at a HUGE discount, and it was basically a new camera. The model had only been released three months previous. He couldn't get a decent photo with it and I've garnished several awards with it. It has also paid for itself. When a camera underperforms, the first place the user should look to try to find the problem is in the mirror.

You're talking yourself out of business Nigel (ha ha!)...this is a workshop on a video!!...thanks so much for being so relaxed in your talk...the wisdom is intrinsic..(within me but also within you too)xx so you bring out the knowledge that one gets but then forgets..ie blaming my camera.

There is some good advice on here for beginners or people just starting out in photography, I just wish these programmes were available in the 60s (or was they?) however going out in bad weather needs thinking about for a 75+ year old....sitting by a warm fire watching your video is more appealing. Of course I do go out a few times of the year in bad weather but its now getting fewer and fewer, so thank you very much Nigel for sharing your video on here I found it was very interesting again....

The expression "improve your photography" means taking steps that result in images adhering to expected color, exposure, layout, relationships, cropping, etc. When painters first saw Van Gogh's work or that of Matisse they criticized it because it did not adhere to the expected standards and qualities. Those 'experts' later realized they were wrong.

Nigel, beginner tip that should be on everyone list - Research the camera and lens for what you want to do. I have come across many people that never researched what they needed and just went with store advice. Many then waste money upgrading, which destroys their budget, as did not put in the effort required at the beginning.

  • @mediamannaman

    1. Pebbles is the star of this show. Awesome pup.
    2. Thanks for actually sharing some composition thoughts. I watch lots of RUclips videos about photography and a lot of people talk about why composition is so important but VERY FEW will actually teach composition! Maybe that is because it is fairly subjective and it would open them to more criticism, or maybe it's because they can't sell composition ideas as well as they can gear. I don't know. But what I do know is that I am very hungry to know what makes a good picture, and why one picture is better than another. You dug into that here and I appreciate it.
    3. You sure travel a lot. Germany, Iceland, New York, and then there is your California cup and cap. If you ever come to Texas let me know.

Nigel thank you so much for all of your incredibly thoughtful and detailed videos. I've become much more focused and committed to improving my photography by watching your channel. I appreciate the many examples you show, that illustrate your points. It was great to see how photos changed overtime in a location, and the small changes light, and editing could make. I feel so much more confident to go out and shoot! You're right - editing does not make the photographer, but helps them visualize the potential of a shot. I'll have to check out one of your editing videos for more! Again thanks for the all the work and care you put into each of your tutorials, it does not go unnoticed!

Number 5 is so important. I can't tell you how many times I have gotten back from a shoot and looked at my photos and the "big iconic shot" I take early in the shoot is almost never my favorite. Almost always, I look for detailed/intimate shots after taking the iconic shot. More often than not, it is one of those that I like best and the one that gets the most likes and comments on social media. I take the "big shot" and get that out of my system and then really begin looking at the scene. It is almost like my focus shifts and I begin to see things I hadn't noticed earlier.

No5, I try and get out on my own but not being able to drive half the time due medication my wife always wants to come. Not being a photographer ( I’m only starting out ) she will get her phone out, point and shoot. Then she’s off, when I’m trying to spend time trying to get varying shots. I only use Snapseed, mainly due to cost, I can’t use at the minute. Not realised the selective edit part, thanks for that.

Always good tips Nigel the one your gave about doubling the hyper focal distance to achieve better DOF has helped me a lot just with testing, (havent been able to get out recently so looking forward to using it properly) one tip I would mention is when in live view to help with focus over expose when manual focusing when zoomed in (using the 5 or 10 times digital zoom) so that you can see your focus point very clearly, then put the exposure back to where you want it. merry Christmas, look forward to seeing more of your helpful vlogs

Hi Nigel - one of your best videos, for me at least. Got to the point where I can take a good photo but need to take it to the next level. Especially relevant for me were points 5 & 7. Have been with groups and been thinking for some time that I feel too rushed and need to be more disciplined and spend more time at locations. The bottom line is really - would I rather have several good shots, or one hero shot that I'm really proud of. The Lightroom bit was really useful for me as well as I'm still going through the developmental stage (no pun intended!). Keep up the good work mate 👍👏 Steve, Perth Western Australia (PS - Merry Christmas & look forward to more of your work in the New Year).

Great video as always Mr. Danson. One of your tips that I noticed I was doing, starting about one year ago, thinking post processing before I even take my shot. Using the possibilities of post processing as I am figuring out my composition has helped me improve. I have a tip that coincides with and is part of your tip about spending more time in the location. Look behind you. Don't get so focused on the obvious shot. Time after time, the better composition or lighting turns out to be literally behind me. Look around intentionally before you accidentally look behind you as you watch the last four seconds of the most glorious light you have ever seen slip away before you can get your camera turned around.

Great video, fine art is not easy to achieve and few people create truly stunning images. I have been a photographer for 35 years and taken 100' of 1000's of images and have less than 20 images that I would hang on my wall, and thats probably down to the fact I have peaked at my ability to 'see" an image that is unique and where all the elements have come together. Sure you can get some interesting foreground and a decent sky but often a stunning location wont give a fabulous image. I guess we never stop learning!

Hi! Gary Gough did a video some time ago doing exactly that... Great images using an entry level DSLR. He's very down to earth in his approach and offers great advice too!

That tip about omitting the sky (if it doesn't add anything) is a great one - thanks!
I knew no.5, but it's always good to have it reinforced. Personally, I always go for the obvious shot as a starting point - if something instantly grabbed me, it might be worth showing. But yes, it's important to then look deeper, walk around a little and often find something special.
