The thing about Finland and saunas is that there is population of 5.6 million people and over 3 million saunas, so it really is not tied to one's income or athletic lifestyle, but into the culture itself. Most Finns have saunas in their apartments or at least communal one in their apartment complexes public area that they can use.
We often make assumptions about the Finns. But I have a news flash: they are NOT the only population that have a sauna! What a shocker, right? So, before you jump to false conclusions broaden your data base. There is an entire Banya Culture throughout the Baltic Region: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Sweden. Thus, I defer to their authority and expertise on the subject. Banya blessings!
@@deejarre1992 Umm.. what false assumptions and conclusions are you talking about? I made my comment because they thought that the Finnish study might have had more people who have better income and live more athletic lifestyle. As born and raised Finn, my experience is that those things have very little to do with if someone uses Sauna regularly in Finland or doesn't. I didn't make any statements about other cultures.
Hi! I've been listening to you guys (ASAPscience) since uni, I am now 32 and you both look the same it's crazy lol. Anyway, I'm a listener from Thailand, now living in Japan, and I love the saunas here. They are always in the public bath/onsen, which means everyone has to be naked going in, so no wet clothing. (it is crazy for me to imagine people outside of Japan going to sauna with clothes on, and you just sweat like crazy in them...) Either way just wanted to say I love your contents and podcasts and wish people would be listening more to these! Pls keep up the amazing work
Greg - you need to find a gym with a mixed gender sauna/steam for better chats - they're usually located beside the pool. Also, that "shower" is for cleaning down the tiles, not for cleaning your sweaty body !
Mitch - you've previously mentioned about how you hate walking barefoot on mud ... maybe phobias about wet stuff deserves an episode? As well as the opposite - such as the kink of having cream cakes smashed into you (Dan Savage has a good example years ago)!
In Florida, our steam room is going out in the summer heat. (100°f and 100% humidity).

There's so many factors. Steam really seems to help when your sinuses feel unwell, you relax, you're likely to have community there... so many factors
