  • Bait is a key strategy for controlling gophers in your yard and fields. The poison is applied directly where they live underground, keeping your pets and livestock safe. We show you how to locate the tunnel and how to use this tool to apply the bait.

The pocket gopher population is very active in our area. If we don't constantly monitor and treat our area, they quickly infest our gardening and landscape areas.
One type of control doesn't work for all gophers. Gophers respond differently to efforts and methods to control them. If one approach doesn't work, we try another.
While we do have cats and owls that reduce the gopher population, we still need to apply controls.
The methods we use are the GopherHawk® spring trap, smoke cartridges, Victor® box traps, and bait.
If you'd like to see how to use each of these methods for maximum effectiveness, here are the links to other episodes we've published on this subject:

In this episode, we show you how we use a bait applicator to place bait in the burrow by locating a main run. We use a probe to locate the run, widen the hole a bit with the probe, and then insert the tip of the bait applicator and push down until it encounters the bottom side of the tunnel. We then rotate that bait release handle back and forth 2 or 3 times to ensure an adequate amount of bait is deposited in the tunnel for the gopher to find and consume.
This works well only if an active tunnel is located, and that is indicated by the proximity of a recent soil evacuation fan on the surface of the ground.
Here is the applicator we use. We've had ours for about 5 years and it has held up quite well.

I'll probably give this a try, I've tried the worms for moles with no luck.

Be sure to locate an active run, near a recent (or same day) fan of excavation soil, to jump up your chance of success. Let me know how this turns out for you. best, DFJ

@@DirtFarmerJay That's where the challenge comes in. I'll have to stomp down all the runs which there are a lot and look the next day.

Only thing I worry about any poison is what if they injest it, then before they die, my dog gets it, or if i put rat/mouse poison in our cellar, i worry about the mice eating it then coming up in the house and our cat getting it. Just had that happen with one of our cats getting a mouse in the house. I was home to get it away from her right away, so all is well, but still, is there any evidence of dogs or cats getting sick/dying from eating a poisoned animal I wonder??

      Unlikely

Thanks for this. Because you are placing the bait in the tunnel, below the surface, it is highly unlikely there would be secondary poisoning. The gopher won't surface, they go into the burrow deeper. Does that help?
