Five years later, I think back to this video as the one that changed the game for me. Your perspective and method not only changed my own foundation routine but it helped improve my confidence and self-esteem which did not involve having to HIDE behind makeup. I rewatch this video every now and then, especially when I'm having a bad "skin season" --- just to remind myself what to do and not to do. You are the voice of reason inside my head. Thank you!

I like how she said that in the areas where we don't have spots are actually perfect, so that we should try to show off those parts. I would've just smeared foundation all over my face!

This is how acne coverage foundation routines should be done; it's so natural looking and imperceptible on the model's face. Too many beauty gurus (even those without acne) suggest heavy coverage all over, and it ends up looking like a caked on mask. Well done, Lisa!

Wow this tutorial makes me feel like such a dummie! When I get spots because of my period I slather my face with BB cream or foundation like I'm trying to paint a wall. It also happens if I'm going to an important event. And I always treat my face rather harshly when using sponges or brushes lol, it's like a have a war with my face when using makeup; Lisa Eldridge treats skin with such delicate touch in all of her tutorials I feel ashamed of myself haha

I always get compliments on how high my cheekbones are, or how my skin always looks like it's glowing and dewy, even with all my acne and scarring. And I sometimes forget they're there at all. So, to hear Lisa say that not all of the skin is bad, and people won't notice the bad if you bring out the good makes me feel 10 times better.

Not sure why I'm crying but the way you view blemished skin and how you like putting makeup on it is truly life-changing. I find it really hard on my part to always do a heavy coverage routine esp since I go to class every day. I suffer from countless criticisms because my blemishes still show even w/ makeup but I find the staring even more hurtful. So glad I found this video, I really learned a lot and understood my skin even better. Thank you for being an inspiration to many!

Its so refreshing to hear a professional makeup artist talk about NOT blanketing the skin in foundation and powder. I am very much into natural looking skin and every time I tried to do the "works" I felt I looked fake. This video has pretty much been my makeup philosophy for a very long time and I'm happy to hear others share my views on the skin!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us💄💌

You have to go the dermatologist. The over the counter products, many are waste of money. If you get prescribed contraceptives, it helps to control it. When you stop, it comes back with a vengeance. This is only from what I have experienced personally.

It's a shame that all my spots are on my cheeks, the area that you like to keep as natural as possible. And it's not always spots, but my skin is just always red in that area. I just don't wear foundation or any other make-up. It takes too much time and when I do it I feel that it is so obvious that I'm wearing make-up because I'm not good enough at applying it. Also I worry about how it looks every second of the day and I don't think that's worth it.
I just go outside without make-up and people will have to accept me as I am, if they can't do that, that's their problem, not mine... That may sound rude, but that's not how I meant it :)

It's been years since you made this video, Lisa, and I'm so grateful because you released it when I was in my late teens dealing with acne. Now I'm in my mid twenties however, and I'm dealing with the scarring. My scars are not just red and on the surface, but they're more of the 'pitted' scars that, no matter how much concealing I do, light betrays me and shows the texture of my skin. Mine aren't quite severe, but they're visible enough that I'm self-conscious. I'm waiting for the day when you make a video for us girls dealing with scars! Thank you, xx.

Moica Silva I would really advise that you stay with brands like La Roche-Posay if you have skin that easily breaks out. My skin has improved dramatically since changing my make-up and skincare to skin-friendly brands like this. Even some of the higher end ones like YSL have alcohol in and irritate my skin no end. It's worth the money - you can't put a price on a good complexion.

I see a lot of comments asking about drugstore dupes. Using Lisa's gentle techniques (like feathering the product), try the drugstore buys below:
Primer: Rimmel 2-in-1 Fix & Perfect
Foundation: L'Oreal Tru Match Liquid Foundation (mix it with a bit of moisturizer on the back of your hand and apply with either a brush, sponge, or fingers).
Under Eye Concealer: Maybelline Dream Lumi Highlighting Concealer
Setting Powder: Revlon Naked Pressed Powder Foundation

Lisa, you always give women the feeling of being ok the way they are. You help us feeling better, not only with your knowledge about make up but also with your words. I really love your approach to beauty and your respect for all women, no matter how young or old or which problems we have.

I first watched this vid when I had never dealt with acne in my life, even as a teenager. Suddenly at the age of 27 hormonal acne has come at me, but I remembered this video and knew I had Lisa in my arsenal. The vid is over 10 years old and still incredibly helpful and relevant. Thank you for the work you do!

invest in a really good full coverage foundation that looks natural. for example: estee lauder double wear. the foundation should cover a good amount of your marks while still looking natural. then go in with the pin point concealing

It isn't because it's gross like that. It is because our fingers carry oils and so when you touch your face, it will only make the acne worse.

I wish that when I was younger I would have embraced my non-spotty parts of my skin more instead of putting a thick layer of foundation on my skin which just made it worse... I can't... wow really wow ...shows what make-up can do if you use it well

All the products are quite expensive, it would be good to see a tutorial with products that typical teenagers can afford? Also, it seems a rather time consuming process, I don't think we can do this every day :(.
Saying that, this was fascinating to watch, as someone who has never been taught any of this and could truly have benefitted from this help as a teen.

beckie :) i know qiute a few other girls who do similar things with much cheaper products and they are stunning. honestly i have given up on covering up but i have found that if i use a dark red lipstick i feel 100 times more confident because it kind of takes the attention away from the redness on my cheeks.
As a sidenote i love your channel you are a truely wonderful inspirational person who isnt fake like so many other youtubers, if something uspets you, you will come on camera and actually express your sadness or aggravation.
I suffer from quite minor Trich (never have bald patches but i have some very uneven layers)

its on offer now on boots so its 12 pounds atm but 16 pounds is still a lot cheaper than other branded foundations and this covers a lot of imperfections ^_^

I'm not really sure how this could possibly be less time-consuming. The only other alternative to spot concealing would be covering the entire face in a full coverage foundation, and Lisa addressed why she didn't think that was a good idea in the intro.

The Body Shop provides quite a variety of products targeting different skin problems, and their makeup products are mainly made up of natural products, maybe you could give it a try :) p.s. for everyday skincare routine for acne prone skin, tea tree oil works wonder :D

Hi Beckie, I love both of your channels!
My advice is: save up and invest in Vichy dermablend. I have bought it recently after months of wondering if I should. And Yeah, it's £29, but my usual foundation (Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation, also recommend it) is £9.99. However it's only 30ml, which lasted a while, but Vichy is 100ml! and the amount you need in one go because of it's high coverage makes it even more worth it. So I'd say, you're more than tripling the amount of time it'll take to use it up and in fact spend less money as a result. And it's bloody fantastic, and you probably don't even need a concealer tbh, just pat some extra dermablend where you need it. I'd also recommend a sponge instead of a brush or your hands to apply it with (any make up sponge will do, but I recommend the real techniques one if you have some money to spare), just make sure to clean it regularly, especially if you have problem skin. You don't want to spread acne. If you do still want concealer COLLECTION do a fantastic one which is stupidly cheap (like £2???), I think it's called lasting perfection concealer. Most importantly, spend more money on skincare less on make up. (especially cleansers, I recommend cleansing balms like the one from botanics or the body shop OR a cleansing oil, OR EVEN BETTER: BOTH.)
