ElectroPhonic Innovations | Self-Amplified Guitars
I forget if I've ever asked you, but have you ever had chance to play, or simply lay your eyes on, a Bond Electraglide? This carbon fibre bit of Scots genius was built in the early '80s. No built-in amp, but highly advanced electronics and a VERY unusual neck. It was one of the only things I wanted to be sure to see up close when we visited Scotland in 2017. Sadly, it had been moved from display at the National Museum in Edinburgh, to their warehouse for the permanent collection in Leith. about a month before we arrived. I was able to correspond with the curator, and he graciously took some photos of the interior of the guitar for me, but there's no substitute for actually holding the thing. I also corresponded with the son of the inventor. Sadly, he had no technical information about the electronics. If yo aren't familiar with it, look it up. Something that all Scots guitarists can point to with pride.
This is really what the Aeroguitar should have been, the festival looked fun and everyone that played it had a similar look on their face. Def sounds like a good portable room practice guitar. The app is a cool feature too.
I bet most people would love to play some guitar on a festival, because they are so hyped and maybe inspired, but understandably only few bring their instruments.
If you brought a Strat clone and one of those tiny Boss amps, most people would be equally excited.
@@PedalPlayhouse please, aeroguitar was unusable, the only guitar like synth its a Synthaxe, but cost like a sport car, see Allan Holdswort play this.
Love zero frets but they gotta be stainless or they need replacing in less than a year with even moderate usage.
How to replace the zero fret in a carbon fretboard and how to remove the old one safely would be good to know.
Glad you got round to reviewing it, appreciate your angle.
This is such a great idea. I think you captured the essence of these perfectly: it’s for those of us who just want to play those same 3 songs we always play while on the sofa. It’s for people who like to play but don’t like it when people hear them practicing. It’s for people who like to have fun and have a bit of a dance around while playing.
It’s fun! This is for people to have fun with and enjoy in as little steps as possible, and to minimise the obstacles between thinking about playing and playing.
I can see kids having one before they try and form a band, or partners who want to give guitar a go but don’t want their other half constantly having to plug everything in.
Mainly it’s perfect for people who used to play but life meant they had to sell their racks and stacks of gear, but every now and then they’d like to bust out a few riffs before bedtime.
I sort of fit in that last category. For quiet playing at night I plug headphones into a Donner Hush-X and strum away. But I may have to try one of these.
You forgot one category. The guy that wants to take it apart and modify the shit out of it. Like me. 😂
@@JohnHWelch63 From the reviews I've read, the first mod may have to be better frets because some users have reported significant fret wear after only a few weeks. But can frets be easily replaced in a carbon fiber guitar? Now there's a challenge someone will face soon.
@@jeffbosch1697 Good question. I've never had a guitar with a carbon fiber fretboard. Seems like a fret change might be a challenge.
@@JohnHWelch63 Maybe they're just glued in? Assuming the old ones come out with no damage then maybe the hardest part will be matching the frets to the fretboard radius?
It has the correct way to adjust a truss rod, too! Good on you, Enya.
Scottish landscapes, soo calming, really wanna go there with my mom once.
Bloody hell. Just when I thought I didn't need to buy any more guitars...
When I bought my first guitar I promised myself that I wouldn't buy another until I can Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement with only a few mistakes... Let's just say I think it will be a long time before I buy a new guitar :P
Well it costs smthing around $300-$250.
@@MilkMaker-ph9dxbro WHAT? for THIS? GOD DAMN COUNT ME IN
great review!!!! informative, critical , and provided solutions to a problem instead of bitching about it like every other youtuber.. 10/10 you got my follow!!!!
Absolutely excellent video! Was a pleasure meeting you at Wildfire 🤘
For the £352 Amazon is currently asking, heck even at the regular £400, this looks like an absolute stellar deal (provided they fix the fret issue) for anyone wanting to get into electric guitars.
I paid a decent amount more than that for a Harley Benton Pro Series, a 10W practice amp, a Boss digital pedal and the cables needed to hook it all up. And you even get a gig bag. You can pretty much just buy this and a set of 10 different picks, and you're off to the races (provide you have a smart phone.. but who doesn't?).
But before considering this as a "quick and easy practice guitar" I would have to get a lot more serious about my playing. I do most exercises without the amp, as my HB has plenty of sound on it's own, and it doesn't take THAT long to hook up the amp and pedal.
that place looks like heaven , look how great people they are
Go Monty Go! Who's the numptie in the spacesuit ... Oh aye c'est moi.
Brill video, see ya next year.
I instantly thought of my old Terminator by Synsonics. Loved that thing. Wrote many a punk song filled with teen angst on it.
I love mine. I just wish you could get _real_ high gain tones with the onboard processing. But plugging my Katana Go into it makes the ultimate travel setup.
Can you hear the processed katana go through the speaker? Is there a loop back or aux in from the katana go headphone out.
Is it worth it for beginners
@@sandrews7760 unfortunately no. The onboard speaker is only for the in-guitar signal chain
@@pierrefitch absolutely. It's well made and has rock-solid tuning stability. Which are the most important things for a beginner guitar.
Always a fantastic time seeing you at wildfire, thanks for having me in the video.
Great work on growing this channel man. I loved the old series "shite paul" and "will it shred" and just got recommended this. It is always nice to see this kind of thing 🤘
The guy @9:51.. look I'm a human Leslie! But thanks for not criticizing the feedback issue. I simply love it. I have a factory setting in red like purple color that has over drive tinged with delay. Talk about Sustain. You can hit any fret with the left hand and it will hold the note like and organ key- as long as you like. No need to even pluck it!
It looks and sounds good!
I recently found out I am mostly Scottish, not Irish as I was raised to believe, so it makes sense I enjoy you so much😝
I would love nothing more than to play Colin's guitar at a music fest 🤣
I got their mini acoustic for camping and lake days. No fret issues at all, feels great, holds tune great, and even sounds decent.
That was loadsa fun! Perfect testing environment too😀👍
10:00 Windows XP wallpaper in the background
This is the type of content you just do not get any where else! I love you Scotland….would not live anywhere else!
It’s like an updated Fernandez elephant guitar! I’ve got one and they’re great fun.
Interesting but having a Blackstar Fly 3 leaves it a bit redundant for me. Especially given that you can also use that as a bluetooth speaker when not in use with the guitar & can just pair it to your phone to listen to Enya.
Me: Aight what's on my subscription timeline today-
Ola: takes the Fender ToneMaster Modeler unit out to Mud and Rain at a Festival in the Netherlands to test
Colin: take the Enya Nova Sonic Go guitar out to the High Hills and Rain at a Festival in Scotland to test
...why do I have two nickels?
That's not a lot of nickels but it's weird that there's two of them...
Love a grass roots event
Looks like a fabulous event
I have two Enya guitars, the Nova go Sp1 and the X4 pro. Neither of those had polished frets till I polished them.
Not sure I'd ever have use for the Enya but that festival looked so much fun.
My fiance has family in the Philippines, and I plan on going frequently. I'm going to buy one of these and keep it there.
Bugger me sideways! I'm going to have to start using this phrase. Thank you
At just under 400€, this sounds like a steal!
... but yeah, not polishing the frets is a crucial mistake on their part, whether intentional or from oversight...
I bought one a few weeks ago and the frets were polished. It might be just on the one that you received.
My first electric guitar in 1986 was a Synsonics Terminator. Hard to believe that thing was ahead of its time LOL!!!
I remember that guitar Had only one setting: distorted
Enya makes cool shit. Their ukuleles are very nice too.
I wonder how well the integrated carbon fiber nut will hold up after years of string rubs.
If they were stainless frets i would likely buy this. But my main concern would be wearing out the zero fret then having to figure out how best to compensate or replace.
You absolute legend.
I wonder how much of a pain it would be to swap out the pickups. I'd love to give one a go, but I would want to put in a set of my favorite doom metal pickups the GFS Loudmouth.
Loving the end video man! Thank you for adding some of my utter nonsense 😂🙏🏻
Thanks for all your help on this one
@@ScienceofLoud anytime 💜
Damnit! I was meant to be there but I was working! Would have loved to have met you
It sounds good, man.
Both of mine lacked polishing on the fret. The zero fret however is already wearing down. This indicates to me that eventually the zero fret will be unusable, and unplayable. And it cannot be easily replaced as far as I know.
One year warranty
Sweet!
Might get a flight over and try to get a spot on yalls festival
Hope lefties are in the works. Absolute legend for giving it away to the cute booth girl🎉
Need this to go alongside my Yamaha Transacoustic. With that pair, who needs amps!
Do they make one with a V30 inside?
Hahahahah. Adds weight, bulk otherwise why not...
Okay, but where can I get one of those unreasonably large picks? Truly the most rock thing there could be. Would be awesome for shows with my progressive jazz fusion band when we play “Fly Me To The Moon” lol
You can find them here: instagram.com/baremammoth?igsh=M3FzeHM2c3J1bjdq
1:10 your car is on the wrong side
they flip the image in post
They are in Scotland😆
Now, if you put in some decent speakers (maybe have then facing up at the player, like a ported acoustic) and put in the electronics from a Tonex One pedal... You could get a pretty high-quality sound.
Is Itmade by the singer of Orinoco flow?
Is it worth it for beginners
Was that Dunsy rockin' Col 🤔? 🤘
I use the strum buddy from fluid audio for when I am on the move. The reviews are all bad wherever you look and they are all wrong! Probably one of the best purchases I ever made for my practice. Luckily I didnt listen to the "wisdom" of YT comments 😂

TARTAN AND THRASH! :P
Enya - "Only Time". Remember that shit?
I'd probably get one just because it kinda looks like Buckethead's Lespaul
That is the Buckethead signature guitar tho XD
But can it be modified. Like could I do different pickups and it still work
I've always thought the "guitar with a speaker in it" was a cheesy gimmick to make up for an otherwise crappy guitar...plus, the tiny 3" speakers tended to sound really weak and crappy. Perhaps, technology has finally caught up with the idea? I mean, it sounded aight to me.
How would it sound with thicker strings and low tuning?
This is the best kind of review😂
11:20 It would have been polite to ask the makers about the frets before posting this.
The design seems to avoid the problem I imagined when I thought of making a guitar out of a 12" speaker, and that is feedback.
My first guitar was a Synsonics Terminator with a built in speaker, this was in like 1997. It had the same issue this does, it's not loud enough and it sounds thin and shitty.
Interest inginstrument. Too bad I don't have the space, otherwise I would try one.
6:13 ghost whammy
It would be cool if you could plug it into an external cab. It's cheap, and if it's fun to play and makes you practice more , it's worth it, IMO.
You can plug it into a powered cab if you want to use the internal sound processor - see the sound samples at the end of the video for an example of this.
I was running it into a Headrush FRFR wedge.
All of those people playing a guitar... How many Wonderwalls did you have to edit out?
Is the gentleman at 7:54 playing Over the top? At least almost 👍
What octave pedal(s) are you using
You're hearing the Beetronics Zzombee octave filter fuzz into a Rat into the clean channel of the Tone King Imperial
Crikey!
What’s that song in background at the video start
Damn
I have a fernandes that is the proto version of this.
"I can play, but not when you're watching"
So it's CAGED, the first 2 bars of Nothing else matters and just mentioning FM causes major pain. 😂
also be warned that parts of the hardware are completely non replaceable. i love mine tho
I suspect you could just take it over to the guy who repairs cell phones and apple laptops and hed sort you out.
So they took an idea from very long ago and made it not a toy. Awesome.
they were black only, had a crappy speaker. A 9v battery . Wasn't very loud and only distorted cranked and sounded like crap..
Craig?
SYTERIA !
I don't like hearing the strings along with the speaker. Should have been 12-15 watts
Cool idea, but it honestly sounds pretty bad.
I mean compare it to having those super tiny amps, it's the same thing a smaller speaker just rarely sounds good, and the amp modelling here is fairly obvious as well sounding as digital as they come.
Fun toy, and fairly cheap price for it, but having that same money I'd probably just get a regular wooden electric guitar.
See Fernades Nomad.
Better and no bluetooth shite to fail on you when the software ages out in 2 years.
The app crap ruins it.
Hard to argue it does not sound shit
DOGGIE
Dudes that bring acoustic guitars to parties just got a whole lot more insufferable.
My first thought was Bulushi in Animal House destroying the guitar
Bart Simpsons guitar
No remote control pedal to switch preset direct, unplayable live, some problem of larsen with internal speaker, the sound of internal preamp direct to mixer is too bad, the price and the quality its ok for newbie guitarist but the guitar was unusable to replace, in case of problem, for professional, for me its like a toy.
It's a practice tool. For practising at home on the couch. Or to take places when travelling.
It's not designed to be a live performance tool.
You're judging a fish on its ability to climb a tree!
@@ScienceofLoud At same price, Mooer produce guitar much better than this, pedal with 4switch, preamp and effects are more professional, the only difference its a 10€ speaker you can connect to output.
The neck in carbon fiber its a big problem, i think cant fix the capo, with preset lead was unusable due to larsen, its not a guitar, its a toy.
Sorry i dont judge, but this project is wrong, also for newbie guitarist.
@@LucaBottonimodena Again - this is not a product aimed at professional stage use - you are judging it on entirely the wrong metric.
This video literally contains newbie guitarists playing it and enjoying it.
Carbon Fibre has nothing to do with using a capo.
Who is Larsen?
What are you talking about?
@@ScienceofLoud Enya dont present this guitar as non professional, but the price its the same of guitars more professional, capo its not the mobile capo you think, its the first in the neck, how you think to change?? its not in the wood its in the carbon fiber, if its impossible to change you put the guitar in the trash.
I dont believe you dont know what is the Larsen effect, or acoustic feedback, its the terribile effect caused by the Enya speaker and the pickup when you use the lead preset, the wrong project by engineering cause this guitar was unusable, are you serious dont know this???
Hendrix, Santana, all guitarist use larsen for creativity, all but not you...
looks fun, sounds very crappy
Sounds about as "thin" as my 10W practice amp. But hooked up it sounded fine. So it's not a bad pick for someone who's first getting into guitars and don't want to shell out a whole lot, in case they don't stick with it.
Does the tiny speaker played outdoors with a music festival going in the background, all captured by a microphone built into a gopro sound kinda thin and crappy?
Who would have expected that?!
You'll find direct line out audio of the sound processor at the end of the video so you can make a more informed opinion of how it really sounds.
I’ll pass
Lose the gimmicky speaker stuff and just make it a normal guitar add 24 stainless frets and this would be cool.
Dose it have a boost or tube screamer pedal onboard?. That plexi clone is enough gain if you had a boost it would sound really good for a modern metal tone
6:44 dudes got the cools knit 🧶 on
